As if the news about Fresno's museum scene couldn't get any worse, word comes that more drastic cuts took place last week at the Fresno Art Museum. I've confirmed that longtime curator Jacquelin Pilar and preparator Steve Ruppell were let go. That leaves the curatorial department, which in August had five people, with one half-time position.
Eva Torres, the museum's acting executive director, told me this morning that the cuts were made because of continued financial woes. "The situation with the Met has really made donors nervous," she said. "I'd like to dispel that. We're not in as dire a situation as the Met, but the recession is affecting us ... It would be nice to remind everyone there is another museum and we need the support."
Along with staff, the number of exhibitions offered by the museum is being cut. The museum will change shows once every six months, rather than quarterly as had been the practice. More items from the museum's permanent collection will be displayed. Guest and freelance curators will be used.

The FAM was founded some 62 years ago. We've already seen the demised of The Met. Let's not let that happen to the FAM, too.
I challenge friends and foes alike: join as an FAM member. It's only $50, but can and will make a difference.

Gah. This saddens me.
I proudly wear my FAM black T Shirt, --happen to be wearing it right now, --and completely love that place... It's just a class act with excellent work to be seen.
It's unfortunate that the monstronsity formerly known as the Met has any effect on how FAM is supported.
FAM is a tremendous little place, and honestly does do the city proud.
maybe we can sell pieces of the Met to support FAM... maybe.
