In the past week, a number of Haiti benefit events have popped up on concert calendars in and around Fresno for the next few weeks.
The most immediate is happening Thursday night at Fajita Fiesta. It's "R + R +R" (short for R & B + Reggae + Relief). It's a music-focused night featuring R & B singer Marques Anthony. He's the Fresno-bred singer who toured with Jamie Foxx this past summer, and will be singing with him on the Grammys on Sunday night. DJ Lace will also be there, spinning reggae and R & B.
It's organized by radio personality Monique -- formerly of B95, currently on air at Q97. She'll also host. She says: "I am not trying to make this a club night but rather an event where people can come chill, eat and drink and contribute."
Cover charge is $5, with $3 per person going to the Red Cross' relief efforts in Haiti. "I would donate 100% but need to pay for fliers, security guards and sound," Mo says.
KUPPAJOE W/ CONFIDE
- Kuppajoe is hosting an all-ages rock show Friday night, with money raised going toward Christian Friendship Ministries' efforts in Haiti. On the bill are Confide, PK, Fighting the Villain and My Beautiful Surrender. With the $8 ticket prices, Kuppajoe estimates it could raise more than $1,300 if the show sells out.
ROCK 4 HAITI
- "Rock 4 Haiti," coming up Feb. 9 at Starline has one of the most impressive local lineups I've seen in a while -- for any sort of local show. Fourteen bands total are on the bill, including Six Ounce Gloves, Down Word, Strange Vine, Buffalo Guns, The Escorts and many more. Props to Love the Captive for putting it together. All money the raised goes to United Nations World Food Program for Haiti.
SOUND N VISION'S HAITI VISION
- Sound N Vision has put together a night of Latin music at The Cellar Door on Feb. 6 to help Haiti. On the bill: Kemaya, Paz and Carlos Rodriguez (of Mezcal) & Friends. Money raised goes to the American Red Cross.
40 WATT HYPE + JJ BROWN
- Coming up on Feb. 13, Fresno State's Satellite Student Union will host a benefit concert from Latin/hip-hop group 40 Watt Hype and rock act J.J. Brown. It'll include a raffle and more, starting at 7 p.m. Up for grabs are tickets to Sea World and Universal Studios, plus movies passes and Starbucks cards. Admission costs $5, or $3 for students.
I'm sure there are more to come, so I'll update as I can. If anybody knows of other benefit events, drop a note in the comments.
