Sense and Sensibility and Sea Monsters

sense_and_sensibility_sea_monsters.jpg

Maybe I'm experiencing some mid-life regression, but I am super excited for Halloween this year. Although it's a little too early to start celebrating, I've already been to two Halloween stores (have yet to buy anything, though: can't decide between Slutty Hermione Granger and Slutty Goddess Athena), watched a couple of horror movies, and spent a fun evening communing with demons via Ouija board (calm down, believers -- the new Parker Brothers glow-in-the-dark version is less about evil and more about finding out if that cute boy in Biology class likes you; a different kind of evil, some would say).

With my new Halloween spirit in place, I'm happy to see that even Jane Austen is getting in on the act this year, albeit against her will. Quirk Classics, the company that brought us Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, this month has released Sense and Sensibility and Sea Monsters, Austen's book about the down-on-their-luck Dashwood sisters, with a little sea monster action thrown in.

Now, I love me some Jane Austen. I have read and enjoyed Pride and Prejudice many times. And I've also read Pride and Prejudice and Zombies. My only complaint about the book is that it didn't have enough zombies in it.

I'm hoping Sea Monsters is a little more monstery than its Quirk Classics predecessor. As much as I enjoy the original Sense and Sensibility, I'm okay with Quirk having some fun at the expense of Ms. Austen. Also, I've always thought Willoughby deserved a more fitting punishment for unceremoniously dumping Marianne, and getting eaten by sea monsters (hope! hope!) is just the ticket.

Ahhhh. That's better.

MikeOz is back and the Beehive is no longer 'grown up.'

>>have yet to buy anything, though: can't decide between Slutty Hermione Granger and Slutty Goddess Athena

So it's all my fault, eh?

I'm OK with that.

I was SO excited about the Quirk Classics, but I started reading P&P&Z and well, I didn't like Jane Austen to begin with, and my hopes that the zombie attacks would make it better weren't really met. Like you said, not enough zombies and it couldn't cover up the fact that it is, really Pride and Prejudice, after all. I sadly won't be buying Sense and Sensibility and Sea Monsters. I hope that he does this to another author's works- one that I like. Its a clever idea. Also, there needs to be some other word for Zombies than "unmentionables" COME ON.

Lets have some Anna Karenina and Vampires (Count Vronsky is really undead! OMG!)or All The King's Men (are werewolves) (Politics will never be the same!)

Oooh or World of Warcraft and Peace!

Was thinking of going as
a sexually fustrated Republican..
But, Halloween is suppose to be fun....

I wonder how long it will take for the FSM folks to list that book cover as a sighting...

I guess they're also coming out with WUTHERING BITES with Heathcliff as a vampire.

Are these books worth reading if you haven't read the original? Yes, I just admitted on the internet that I've never read Jane Austen.

That's a good question.

Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, except for the references to zombies, was mostly Jane Austen's book word for word. The fun, for me, was in acknowledging the differences.
