*Note: This is not addressed to friendly DMB fans like the ones interviewed in this story from today's paper.
Hello from Fresno -- you know, the city you've been cracking jokes about since it was announced that the Dave Matthews Band would be playing here this summer for the first time.
Cracks like these were found on a popular DMB message board:
- This show will be the largest group of people that have a full set of teeth that fresno has ever seen!
- FRESNO! Oy...- Great...this is only the #1 place to get your car stolen in the state.
- How did Fresno get a show and Los Angeles didn't?
Yes, shame on us for existing and giving the rest of the world fruit. Yes, we deserve to be ridiculed because a concert is coming to our town -- *shudder*. Really, what was the person who does Dave Matthews' routing thinking? Didn't he or she know that Fresno is not good enough for Majesty Matthews and his hoity-toity fans?
We're sorry that your precious hero has the gall to perform here, in a metro area that includes a million people. We hope you're equally as upset at cities like Des Moines, which is half our size but is getting a tour stop. Or Scranton, which has only given the world a fictitious TV show.
We'll try not to enjoy Sunday night's show too much. And we'll try not to let Dave get infested with Fresno cooties.
So please accept our sincerest apologies. Believe us, we don't want you L.A. d-bags here any more than you want to be here.

Last time I saw Dave Matthews at Shoreline (quite a while ago) I was surrounded by so many inebriated, freshly waxed, bottle tanned Frat Bros that I was embarassed to be a white guy. The tunes were great, but would have been better with some normal, dentally challenged Fresnans.
I can care less whats being posted on those message boards. Its nothing new. Jokes are jokes and they've all been said before and will continue to be. What I am excited for is the Dave Matthews Band live at the Save Mart Center!! This will be my 15th show and now I get to see them in my own backyard! I do hope Fresno is representing strong Sunday night. I know there will be plenty of folks from out of town and state, but Fresno has to come strong with it!
It would be amazing if the band looks back on their tour and acknowledges Fresno was one of the highlights of the tour. Yeeeeaaaaaahhhhh booooooyyeeeeee!!!! Let's do this!!!!!!!!
OMG, hilarious Mike! And yes, there are some douchy DMB fans, but let's face it, we live in a world of douche bags... I guess it's not our music choice that keeps us apart. :)
Nevertheless, my friends and family are proud DMB lovers and though we're not "dentally challenged" we also aren't "inebriated, freshly waxed frat bros either" well maybe we ARE a little inebriated...LOL!!
Either way, super excited for the show on Sunday...let's show those A-holes on the message boards just how cool Fresno is and let's have a great time!!!
Dave Matthews Band....is this the group that Sammy Hagar was in?
(yeeesh, my posts have been getting
snooty and bitter over the last coupla
days. I really need to work on my
personality.)
...DMB has not been a 'hot item' on the charts for quite a while, (this is not the mid to late nineties.)
I still think they're excellent musicians and do a really nice blend of catchy-intricate work...
Sucks their horn guy died, but I trust his replacement can cut the muster...
Anyway, when I see those towns (that nobody can figure out 'why', it's because they are loaded with the fan demographic, (agewise) (means more liklihood to sell out) at places with a more reasonable booking price.
(And if you're wondering about Scranton?
It's actually a strongly populated area, a total interstate hub for that region of Eastern Pa. (big thing around there,) and it's surrounded by got colleges and has steady DMB fans from his heyday.)
..Leroi Moore actually brought in Rashawn Ross to tour with the band before his tragic accident. Rashawn Ross and Jeff Coffin are well seasoned and have shared the stage with the band prior to Moore's death and are excellent musicians.
DMB has been a 'hot item.. Big Whiskey & The Groogrux King debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 and just went platinum. Not to mention their relentless annual year long touring across the U.S. and Europe which attracts thousands upon thousands of concert goers. Their Central Park concert alone drew over 100,000 people. Their Live Trax series of live concert releases has has also proven very succesful and continue to be in high demand.
When they hit the stage Sunday in Fresno, they'll probably play for about 3 hours and rock the hell out of the Save Mart Center. Can't wait!!
...so I'm just kind of curious.
Are you a mega-fan or something? Or just PR for the band/label/promoter/venue?
(honest question.)
I guess you could say I'm a big fan. I don't make all the shows or travel great lengths to watch them live like the mega-fans do, but when they're nearby I definetly make the effort.
Will you be making the show? Its going to be a good one!
truthfully? no.
I'll catch them some day, really do enjoy their work, but won't be attending at this time.
I have no doubt that the musicianship will be good.
You go have fun.
i need a job at the bee. i love writing rants like these. mike, never change
They're the ones who listen to sh***y music, not me and my full set of teeth providing their water and fruit
their horn player died? wtf? that bites man. i love the band's cover of all along the watchtower. i really dig the band, but must people i know who like them are the DB musicians. i like the fact that they have chops, it is common knowledge. but unlike other chop bands, they do not feel the need to play every single lick they know every 10 bars. they are not afraid to just groove.
oh mike oz...you have brought a much needed smile to my face today!! I consider myself a DMB fan and I say, it's about time he gave us some props! Screw those out of towners! HAH! I say, we've had to drive to their snootyriffic towns long enough, its time they get a taste of what the 'no has to offer (which, tomorrow night will be DMB....suck it LA fans!!!)
I think the Fresno fans should of told Dave Matthews where to stick those $65 tickets.
Do you seriously think $65 is too much for a ticket? Considering the price of most shows at the SM Center, this one was better than most.
There are still Dave Matthew's fans?
hell yeah theres still Dave Matthews fans! $65 isn't a big deal for their show.. What does a ticket to see Britney Spears go for? Or the Jonas Bros? Or NKOTB??? Ugh..Can't believe I just typed those three names in the same paragraph as Dave Matthews.. sorry everyone..
