I'm willing to bet I was the only person who saw Matt & Kim in Visalia on Saturday night, then saw Dave Matthews Band at Save Mart Center on Sunday. I'll testify this: I couldn't have asked for more contrasting shows.

Matt & Kim -- a Brooklyn keyboard-and-drums, boyfriend-girlfriend duo -- play songs that rarely go longer than three minutes. Dave Matthews Band, on the other hand -- the uber-popular touring jam band -- is the kind of group that wanders inside a song for 15 minutes.

In the case of both bands, that's why their fans love them. Matt & Kim yelled and bounced up and down on stage while their fans trounced around the floor. DMB fans swayed side to side while Matthews cracked subtle jokes and his band moved calmly around the stage.

There's a big-deal art exhibition at Fresno State that I want to make sure people know about. I wrote in my Sunday Spotlight column about "A Studio of Their Own: The Legacy of the Fresno Feminist Experiment, 1970," which continues through Oct. 9 at the Conley Art Gallery. This is an exhibit that celebrates Fresno State's role in the blossoming of the feminist art movement that occurred when well-known artist Judy Chicago, best known for "The Dinner Party," spent a groundbreaking year as a guest professor at the university.

Don't look for any works by Chicago, however. Curator Laura Meyer, an art history professor at Fresno State, puts all the focus on Chicago's Fresno State students, several of whom went on to significant careers. Meyer's contention is that since Chicago embraced a collaborative creative process, which in the case of her Fresno tenure meant that she and her students actually opened a communal art studio off-campus, Chicago was as much influenced by her students during a formative and profound time in art history as they were by her.

open-mic.jpg

I try hard not to highlight the same weekly events for the To-Do list, but Mondays makes that a challenge. There's reggae at Audie's, open mic at Starline Grill, Margarita Mondays at Fajita Fiesta -- but we've covered all that before.

So on this Monday, here's something different: Open mic comedy night at Hero's. It's hosted by Danny Minch and starts at 8:30 p.m. Not sure if there's a charge to get in, but I'm thinking since it's at a restaurant, there probably isn't.

It's a chance to see up-and-coming comedians cut their teeth, plus watch some of the working comics around town try out new material.

school_zone_sign.jpg

There was an interesting blurb in Saturday's paper about the recent speeding crackdown by Fresno police in school zones. This is an expected phenomenon as the school year grinds into gear. Impatient summer drivers have to be reminded to be careful when little ones converge on the sidewalks.

I don't have any problems with nailing people for speeding in school zones. What confuses me, however, is how poorly marked and arbitrary many of these 25 MPH zones are. On some busy streets, it's almost impossible to see the school zone sign amidst all the visual pollution. When you do manage to read the fine print on those signs, you see that the dramatically reduced speed limit kicks into effect whenever children are present.

That's a far cry from when I visited Texas this spring. There, EVERYONE drives the speed limit in a school zone -- you do NOT want to end up in a Texas jail -- but, then again, it's blatantly obvious when that speed limit is in effect thanks to the flashing lights, huge signs, etc. In Fresno, however, it's always a judgment call. Maybe even a speed trap.

In the meantime, impatient Fresno drivers, don't flip me off for going 25 mph when I'm not sure if kids are around or not.

Here's what I did this weekend. Fill us in on your adventures in the comments.

cakepostcard.jpg

FRIDAY
- Went to The Met's "Let Them Eat Cake" soiree -- which included hipsters galore, yummy cupcakes, live music and a semi-private opportunity to check out the museum. Saw local band The Aircrash for the first time (I like their energy) and heard a little bit of Rademacher. I also tried my best not to draw the ire of the security guard who tailed everybody in the "I Want Candy" exhibit. For more: Check out Fresno Famous' review.

SATURDAY
- I bought 759 pounds of rocks. If you need to buy a bunch of rocks, and the guy on the corner isn't cutting it, I'd suggest Rosenbalm Rockery -- they gave a rock newbie such as myself excellent service.

Obit_DJ_AM.JPG

It is a little hard to believe that one month after I sat in Pasadena's Langham Huntington Hotel & Spa ballroom talking with DJ AM, whose real name is Adam Goldstein, he was found dead in his apartment. Goldstein had shown up in late July to talk with TV critics about his new MTV series.

Goldstein was the host for the eight-episode "Gone Too Far," a series that documents young adults - between the ages of 18-25 - as they struggle with substance abuse. The show was scheduled to launch at 10 p.m. Oct. 5. There is no report from the cable channel if the series will be broadcast.

Before talking about the show, Goldstein discussed the Sept. 20, 2008 plane crash that killed four people. Goldstein was one of two survivors.

"I mean, there's no reason why I should have lived or I lived and they didn't. And it's something that I struggle with every day, you know, kind of wondering. But I've just realized I'm never really going to know. I'm alive, and I'm here, and I have another chance. So I have to do something better with my life this time," Goldstein said.

116895_1307_pre.jpg "CMA Music Festival: Country's Night to Rock," 8 p.m. KFSN (Channel 30.1): The three-hour music special was taped during the "2009 CMA Music Festival" held in June in Nashville. This is the sixth time ABC has broadcast this special that provides a look at the Nashville event that regularly attracts more than 50,000 fans.

Scheduled to perform are Trace Adkins, Jason Aldean, Dierks Bentley,Brooks & Dunn, Kenny Chesney, Julianne Hough, Jamey Johnson, Kid Rock, Lady Antebellum, Miranda Lambert, Martina McBride, Reba McEntire, Jake Owen, Brad Paisley, Kellie Pickler, John Rich, Darius Rucker, Sugarland, Taylor Swift and Zac Brown Band.

Even if you aren't a country music fan, this is a pretty impressive lineup. Especially when you toss in that Kid Rock performs "Picture" with special guest Martina McBride.

Wynonna and The Judds reunite and perform together for the first time at the CMA Music Festival in six years.

Dave Matthews and his jam-band clan finally played in Fresno on Sunday night -- and we want to know what you thought.

How was the set list? The crowd? How did the Fresno stop compare to other times you've seen DMB? Did you like seeing the band indoors at Save Mart Center? What about opener Jason Mraz, did you dig him?

Chime in on any of that plus whatever else is on your mind. While you consider, here's our photo gallery from the concert.

According to TMZ, DJ AM, real name Adam Goldstein, has been found dead in his apartment in New York City. No word on cause of death yet, but TMZ reports prescription pill bottles were found at the scene. He was 36.

DJ AM became a regular on gossip blogs after being engaged to Nicole Richie and then dating Mandy Moore. In a 2008 interview with Glamour, AM talked about surviving a verbally abusive father who eventually died of AIDS, his obesity and subsequent gastric bypass surgery, having a major drug habit which he kicked (in the article he claimed to be nine-and-a-half years sober), and a failed suicide attempt. He also was in the news last year for surviving a plane crash, along with Blink 182's Travis Barker, that killed four passengers.

This summer has not been kind to celebrities; this week alone has seen the passing of Ted Kennedy, Dominick Dunne, and now DJ AM.

Condolences to his family, friends and fans.

Dave Matthews Band.JPG

Hello from Fresno -- you know, the city you've been cracking jokes about since it was announced that the Dave Matthews Band would be playing here this summer for the first time.

Cracks like these were found on a popular DMB message board:

- This show will be the largest group of people that have a full set of teeth that fresno has ever seen!

- FRESNO! Oy...

- Great...this is only the #1 place to get your car stolen in the state.

- How did Fresno get a show and Los Angeles didn't?

Yes, shame on us for existing and giving the rest of the world fruit. Yes, we deserve to be ridiculed because a concert is coming to our town -- *shudder*. Really, what was the person who does Dave Matthews' routing thinking? Didn't he or she know that Fresno is not good enough for Majesty Matthews and his hoity-toity fans?

We know there's probably a good explanation about what happened to the V in River Park sign, but we're actually more interested in ridiculous guesses.

We Beehivers have our own. Add yours in the comments.

MTD DLW RIVER PARK SIGN.JPG

HEATHER: Kirk Vartanian stole it to create a custom neck chain.

MIKE OZ: Displaced and bitter Johnny Rockets employees stole it. Because you can't spell revenge without a big ol' V in the middle.

KATHY: Pat Hill thought the Bulldogs needed a bigger V for inspiration.

DONALD: Pat Sajak ran out of letters for "Wheel of Fortune." Don't believe me? Go to Craigs List. He's buying vowels for 200 bucks a pop.

JOAN: Someone stole it to sell at the Great California Garage Sale. Autographed by the Governator, of course.

High_School_Musical_2.JPG

The hardest ticket to get this weekend, alas, is for "Noises Off," the frothy CenterStage Clovis Community Theatre production that closes Saturday. Remaining performances are sold out. Moral of the story when it's a tiny theater: Plan ahead.

I got the chance last night to see "Disney's High School Musical 2" at Veterans Memorial Auditorium, and I was pleased by its zippy energy. Director Skyler Gray has a knack for moving his young cast (ages 11-14) briskly through this show's slight story, which involves the continuing adventures of Troy, Gabriella and Sharpay, who singlehandedly seemed to have resurrected the ability to sing and dance at high school without getting beaten up by musical-theater naysayers. (In this sequel, the Wildcats of East High spend the summer at a swanky golf resort owned by Sharpay's father.) Jeff White's perky, classy set is top-notch -- I loved the golf-course scene and that dramatic opening lighted title element -- and Laura Vogt has fun bopping around with the lighting design, which gives the show a crisp, Tigerbeat feel. My favorite cast member at the performance I saw was the magnetic Ryan Beatty, who plays Sharpay's little brother with a wonderful stage presence. I'm impressed by how dedicated these performers were, even those who obviously weren't feeling well. Grab a teenager and catch this Children's Musical Theaterworks show before it closes.

My highest recommendation for a local show is the top-notch ensemble charm of "Lost in Yonkers" at the 2nd Space Theatre. Funny and poignant, it features a superb turn by Danielle Jorn as Aunt Bella. Here's my full review.

A British chick? Really? She was sooo nasty in "The Devil Wears Prada" -- that couldn't have all been acting!

And didn't she date Harry Connick Jr-lite Michael Bublé for, like, ever? At least until the woman he'd had a decade-long affair with told the world? This happened less than two years ago. She's on the rebound! British and damaged. I just can't -- I mean. Really, Jim Halpert? No!

Sigh. I'm going back to bed. Until April. Wake me when season six of "The Office" is over.

I had a real tough job last night. I was invited by the folks at Fresno's Chaffee Zoo to take part in a blind taste test to help select a couple wines for a fund-raiser they are working on.

The zoo plans to make special-label wines to raise a "few thousand dollars" for animal conservation in Africa. Fresno County wineries were invited to enter wines in the taste test. We sampled 11 wines from 4 local wineries (3 whites, 8 reds). Two or three wines will be selected -- It sounds like a muscat from Fresno State and a merlot from Metzler Family Farms were in the running.

Zoo director Scott Barton, who is quite enthusiastic about his new job and this program, says Tucson artist Diana Madaras has donated some of her work for the labels. Barton would like to have a zebra wine, rhino wine and possibly an elephant wine.

The zoo plans to use the wines for special events and an option for catered events at the zoo. And, they are talking to Whole Foods and Trader Joe's about selling the wines. One dollar from each bottle will go to conservation.

Barton also hopes to get other zoos to pick up the wines for their events -- which would bring Fresno County wine and the Chaffee Zoo name to a wider audience. It's an innovative idea.

Here are a few events coming up at the zoo:
The annual Zoo Boo event.
A holiday light show, Zoo Lights.

Word comes today that a new contemporary TV series will be based on the classic film "Heathers." To which I say:

Are we going to prom or to hell?

Come on, people. The over-the-top black-comedy bliss of "Heathers," which focused on two characters who went around killing the popular girls in high school and labeling them suicides, was in large part possible because people in 1988 did not go around shooting up high schools/health clubs/post offices/college lecture halls on a regular basis. Methinks the delicious ironic wit of the movie will get translated into either a bloodthirsty/ghoulfest Advanced Placement version of "True Blood" or will get watered down into an unwatchable interlude of high-fashion "Kum Ba Yah." (Forty bonus Snappy Snack Shack points for the first person who can identify that bit of useless "Heathers" trivia.)

A couple of weeks ago, I wrote a story for The Bee's front page about the precarious financial situation at the Fresno Art Museum. In that story we featured a large photograph of Jo Anne Yada, who staged a one-person performance-art-style vigil in front of the museum. Today Yada sent me this note along with permission to pass it on to Beehive readers:

Just a quick update: 4 people were laid off at the Fresno Art Museum, including myself ... We were let go yesterday with no notice or time to wrap up what we were working on. That leaves only 9 full-time and part-time employees.

If you just judged by looks, you might think Mayer Hawthorne is some kind of ironic comedian with an uncomfortable soul-singer shtick. But if you listen to the music, you'll think something very different -- this dude can SING!

Get familiar with Hawthorne, a singer/DJ/producer/multi-instrumentalist from Michigan who definitely picked up a thing or two from the Motown sound. Here's his single, "Just Ain't Gonna Work Out," from his Stones Throw debut, "A Strange Arrangement," due Sept. 9. Is he the male Amy Winehouse? Maybe.

Here's what things get good, Fresno. Hawthorne is scheduled for a tour stop at Starline on Sept. 14. The guy is hitting a bunch of hip music venues on his first national tour and Fresno is among his stops. Tickets will cost $10 in advance or $15 at the door, but advance tickets are not on sale yet.

About 250 people filled Visalia's Cellar Door on Wednesday night to see Smashing Pumpkins frontman Billy Corgan play an intimate show.

Corgan's set was broken up into three parts: A folksy opening with Spirits in the Sky, the band he assembled for this six-city tour. An acoustic middle where most of the band left the stage. And an electric ending, where he was joined on guitar by Dave Navarro (Jane's Addiction, Red Hot Chili Peppers).

He had good reason to be concerned. The show, about a group of people who can be stripped of their personalities and given the traits they need for a mission, had low viewing numbers. Critics liked it. But, critics liked Whedon's "Firefly" and it lasted one year.

Once Whedon got over the initial shock there would be a season two of "Dollhouse," he went to work tweaking the show so it will draw more viewers when the second season starts Sept. 25.

Sylvester Stallone - the star, writer, director and creator - offers no surprises for anyone who has seen the first two "Rocky" films. This sixth offering in the franchise goes back to the basics. It would be easy to dismiss this film as the vain attempt by someone whose day has passed to capitalize on former glory. But there is something uplifting about seeing a champion's emotional and competitive heart laid bare, even if his time seems to have past. If there is one thing the early "Rocky" movies and this latest version have, it is a lot of heart.

What you'll find below is basically a Worst Flier of the Week Special Achievement Award. It's for a party Thursday night at Blackbeard's that is put together by ex-Bulldog hoopster Dominick Young. Thing is, there are enough different fliers for the event to field two basketball teams. Does having 10 different fliers for an event really help?

Sadly, none of them are all that great. I'll give them this, though -- with the numerous fliers and the many things promised on them, this event looks like it's going to be busier than Best Buy on Black Friday.

My favorite NBC comedy, "The Office" (sorry -- still haven't gotten into "30 Rock," though I've tried), returns September 17 with an episode titled "Gossip," and I'm starting to get super-excited for its return.

TheOfficeNBC.jpg

In the meantime, I have the September 8 DVD release of season five, as well as the continuously informative site Office Tally, which yesterday posted the original blueprints for the layout of Dunder Mifflin.

Why is this important? It's really not, unless you're me -- the person who has struggled since the beginning of the show with understanding the placement of Dunder Mifflin Scranton's employees.

Sadly, my mind does not seem to work well with spatial relationships (hence my shockingly low score on the S.A.T.s), and for the life of me, I just couldn't figure out where Meredith and Creed sat in relation to the accounts team -- Angela, Oscar and Kevin. In my brain, the two teams were switched.

Clearly I was wrong:

Newspaper readers can be such sourpusses. One of the top-read stories on fresnobee.com this afternoon is a short, unbylined, non-earth-shattering piece about a guy who lives just north of Clovis who got in a big fight with his wife. He put a bunch of her possessions on their front lawn, where they languished for a few days, and then got irked when people thought it was a yard sale and tried to buy her dishes. He ended up having to post a sign chalking up this public spectacle to an "ugly divorce."

OK, like I said, not exactly the top news of the day. But unusual, yes, and definitely water-cooler fodder. And obviously interesting to online readers, who had clicked on it 2,155 times by 5 p.m.

Of course, many of the comments appended to the story are typical harumph jobs:

  • ... Unless the cops are shooting or beating up somebody, or CSU Fresno is messing up somewhere, The Bee has nothing to report on.
  • Wow! What a really lame story!!!
  • ....why can't The Bee report on news that is worthy.
  • Must of been a slow news day......

So, um, why are y'all taking the TIME to comment on a story that you obviously read and felt compelled enough about to register your opinion? Cracks me up.

At least, according to the owner of the following video, which allegedly shows Michael Jackson jumping out of the L.A. Coroner's van after he was pronounced dead.

Are we soon to be subjected to tabloid reports featuring fuzzy photos of MJ and Elvis grabbing narcotics-laced cheeseburgers together in Tempe or Des Moine? Time will tell.

But yeah, probably.

For the release of his long-awaited "Boy Meets World" album, Fashawn is celebrating in style. He's tapped underground hip-hop heavyweight Talib Kweli to share the bill with him at Tower Theatre on Oct. 24.

Tickets are on sale now and cost $25 for general admission seating. They're available through Ticketmaster and at the Tower Theatre. A limited number of reserved seats cost $30 and are available only at the Tower Theatre.

The show is the next step in a move-making year for Fashawn, who's gotten a ton of press, toured Europe, played at the Rock the Bells festival and got an XL rating for his album (which drops Oct. 20) in XXL magazine. Last weekend, he was in the studio with mega-producer Dr. Dre.

If you're a member of the Fashawn faithful, then be sure to check out his first Valley show in months, scheduled for Sept. 5 at Visalia's Howie & Son's. U-N-I is on the bill for that one.

I am entranced with Danielle Jorn's performance as the sad Aunt Bella in "Lost in Yonkers."

There are rare times I feel I'm in the presence of an actor truly inhabiting a character on stage, and Jorn reaches that summit in the Good Company Players production at the 2nd Space Theatre. What makes her performance even better is the strong ensemble cast backing her up with warmth and precision in this autobiographical Neil Simon play.

As Bella, aunt to the teen-age protagonists (the younger Arty, played by A.J. Barco, and Jay, played by Michael Gregory, pictured above with Jorn) who in the early 1940s are forced to move in with their fearsome grandmother, Jorn finds within her character the humorous threads that Simon intended, including her exaggerated absent-mindedness. (She sometimes forgets where she lives.) But Jorn also beautifully connects with Bella's deep loneliness and frustration. Doctors told Bella's mother that her daughter would never be more than a child in terms of mental capacity, and she's lived a life of diminished expectations. Whether Bella deserved that subdued adulthood is left up in the air in Simon's play, but in Jorn's accomplished hands, you certainly feel her character's ache at her life circumstances.

Usually, I'm pretty good at spotting Valley food or farmers when I see them on the Internet or on television.

Remember my post about Chris Velez in "The Greenhorns?" And my other one about Bravo Farms cheese in a Stephanie Izard video?

A couple of weeks ago, the Torosians of Dinuba appeared on "Anthony Bourdain No Reservations." These tree fruit, grape and citrus growers sell their wares at the Vineyard Farmers Market at Shaw and Blackstone avenues, as well as at the Ferry Building in San Francisco.

Well, some fans of the Torosians convinced Bourdain to try the family's oro blanco grapefruit at the Ferry Building. Tory Torosian Jr. handed over a sample, while his mother, Rebecca Torosian, looked on from the background.

Check it out, right after the blue cheese in this video (at about 34 seconds):

Rebecca Torosian tells me Bourdain liked it so much, he came back later to buy some oro blancos and page mandarin oranges. The full episode shows her husband, Tory Torosian Sr., handing over a bag. (Too bad that's not in the above video clip.)

Local music dudes Jesse Mendez and David Askew have scored big time. A song the pair penned, "Outer Space," got recorded by ex-Kiss guitarist Ace Frehley and was chosen as the first single for his upcoming "Anomaly" album. Read more about it here, and get a taste of the song below:

The official release date of the single is today, and there's a party at Audie's Olympic to celebrate. It's doubling as a Kiss party, so Kiss fans put on your makeup and costumes and get over there to pat these local guys on the back. It starts at 9 p.m. There's no cover.

The draw is the quirky adventures of two government agents who track down odd artifacts mixed with the explosive chemistry of leads Eddie McClintock and Joanne Kelly. Glamour Magazine is getting a lot of feedback about an almost nude photo of a plus-size model it ran to illustrate a story on self confidence.

Women are writing to the magazine asking for more photos of real-looking women. But will it make a difference, in a bigger way ... like, say, the cover shot for the magazine? Or, will be get more of this kind of doctoring to create perfect-looking women? Here's what Glamour's editor had to say on the "Today Show" this morning:

So people, what do you think? Does the belly bother you? Do you want to see more "real looking" models? Or, do you like the ultra-thin, flat-bellied gals?

Personally, I think a mix of all shapes and sizes -- and some toned, athletic looking women -- would do the fashion industry good.

Noises_Off.JPG

There are many laughs in CenterStage Clovis Community Theatre's chipper new production of "Noises Off," but the talented Hayley Galbraith gets one of the best. As the third act of this zany show begins, Galbraith's character -- a dippy former grande dame of British theater who is starring in the play that serves as the "show within the show" part of the storyline -- is supposed to answer a ringing phone on stage.

The phone doesn't ring, of course, because this is one of those backstage comedies in which everything that can go wrong does. Galbraith glares at the phone. Nothing. For a fraction of a second, she scrapes nervously. Still nothing. Finally, in desperation, she fixes her eyes on the receiver, takes a slight gulp and trills out a weak little "riiiiingggggg."

The moment is hilarious. Galbraith hits her beat with just the right amount of annoyance and embarrassment. If she'd overplayed the delivery, it would have seemed too broad. If she'd underplayed it, the laugh wouldn't even have registered. As it stands, it's a moment of comic perfection.

Though it's a standout moment for Galbraith, the fun thing about this production is that most of the rest of the show isn't dominated by one actor or another. Ensemble is the name of the game in "Noises Off," and director Eric Day (mostly) keeps the momentum smooth and the tone crisp.

MTD_CEK_TRINIDAD_TROUBLE2.JPG

Talk about a bizarre local story: The Bee's Lew Griswold dug up a doozy with his account in Sunday's paper of a Farmersville-raised 28-year-old on a mission trip to Guyana who got busted for having a bullet in his backpack. Turns out that the bullet belonged to his father, a California Highway Patrol officer, who had previously borrowed the pack for a target-shooting trip. Lew writes:

The misadventure began July 31 when Derrick Bravo boarded a plane in San Francisco, landed in Trinidad to change planes and had his carry-on backpack X-rayed. A security officer reached into a mesh pocket and pulled out a bullet.

After he got tossed in jail, Bravo befriended his fellow prisoners -- who included a murderer, a rapist, a kidnapper and a peasant farmer caught with marijuana -- and ended up singing "Our Father" with them. They called him "Yankee" and "bullet man." After three days in jail, a judge let him off with a warning.

Here's my favorite part of the story:

Once out of jail, the Trinidad airport authority officers befriended Bravo, ferried him around and found him an inn for the night.

Talk about a winning personality. A couple of questions: I wonder how ticked off Bravo was at his dad when he got home? And why the heck didn't the San Francisco security screeners find the bullet in the first place?

I didn't do a whole heck of a lot this weekend, so I'm gonna need you guys to carry this post with your comments. Cool?

FRIDAY
Along with a packed house, I said goodbye to Milano on its final day. It'll still be open for a few upcoming concerts, but Friday night it served up its final pizza. Too bad more nights weren't like that ... then I probably wouldn't be writing this.

SATURDAY
I did the grueling there-and-back-in-one-day Bay Area drive, which is never fun. It was fun to see the A's, but navigating I-5 and Highway 152 on the way home is as yucky as a Heidi Montag song-and-dance routine

SUNDAY
A bunch of not-noteworthy stuff with laundry heading the list and chillin' running a close second. Even "Mad Men" and the new Jay-Z song were a bit underwhelming.

YOUR TURN
Tell me about all the awesome stuff I missed out on this weekend. Did you check out a show? Find a new restaurant? See a good movie? Try a new adventure? Go for it ...

Richard_III3.jpg

There's a powerful and vibrant moment in Woodward Shakespeare Festival's production of "Richard III" that captures for me the heart and soul of this intense classic. The royal court, which on the whole is as bloodthirsty, fratricidal and downright nasty a lot as you've ever seen assembled under one roof, has just learned that King Edward IV's brother, George, has perished in the Tower. The king, furious, turns around to glare at the dozen or so people scattered in the room, and everyone immediately falls to their knees. It's as if Edward's eyes have a physical grip all their own as his downward nod drives these important grown-ups into positions of subservience.

I thought to myself while watching the scene: This is the power that Richard, who is literature's poster child for terror and despotism, craves more than anything. He wants to be the arbiter of life and death. He wants to make other human beings do things because he can. Imagine that: being able to make people fall to their knees simply because of an angry downward glance. It's no wonder that Shakespeare was fascinated with power -- not only with those who grab it and keep it, but with all the other complicit souls who embrace tyranny out of fear, cluelessness or self-interest.

One thing I like about this production, which is in its second weekend at Woodward Park, is that director Heather Parish has found new ways to tackle this always-important theme in the play.

ProjectRunwaySeason6.jpg

"Project Runway" premiered on Lifetime last night, and thank god it's still the same show I've come to know and love. New location, new sponsors, new network -- same vibe, same Heidi-isms, same magical, heart-warming, wish-he-was-my-mentor-in-real-life Tim Gunn.

My only concern about the show is that, being set in Los Angeles now, the door is open for some really sketchy guest judges [*coughLindsayLohancough*]. I'm stating for the record right now that if any member of the Kardashian family appears on the show, I will heavily consider breaking up with "PR" for good. Heavily consider. (Though I'll probably still watch. Tim Gunn, I can't quit you!)

I'm not interested in recapping the show -- you watched it, you know what went down. I did notice something peculiar, though. Prior to the show airing, I had no idea Lindsay Lohan would be the guest judge. Throughout the show, however, I noticed that designer Ari Fish holds more than a passing resemblance to Lindsay's embattled on-again, off-again girlfriend, Samantha Ronson.

Take a look:

Here's the effective thing about these commercials: They make you stop and notice the Fresno Metropolitan Museum's brand even when their meaning isn't instantly obvious. (One of us, in the regular whirl of getting ready in the morning, overheard one Thursday during the "Today" show and came to work saying: "Huh?")

The TV spots show people trying to pronounce made-up terms that are combinations of art and science terms. Thus, in the first spot, we get people trying to say "WILLIAMSAROYASAURUS."

John English, the Met's marketing manager, says that the museum got a great deal on the advertising campaign: It's free. He writes:

In 2008, the Met was selected as recipients of the Moody Award for Excellence by the Fresno Advertising Federation. As recipients of the award, the federation created the campaign, produced it and negotiated airtime for the commercials to run on radio and TV. The Met is able to benefit from this great campaign without spending a dime.
On the jump: Check out the campaign's other two ad clips. In the meantime, here's a sneak peek of the Beehive's new campaign featuring local folks trying to pronounce:

"Miss Universe Pageant" 9:00 p.m. Sunday, KSEE (Channel 24.1): There was a time when beauty pageants were fun to watch because of ... uh ... well .... the smart way the contestants answered questions. Now the attraction is the strong chance someone will either fall or answer a question in such a bad way they make headlines for days.

"The Dish" 10 p.m. Saturday, Style Network: This half-hour jab at the worst in news, fashion and entertainment is worth watching just to see the always smiling Danielle Fishel. She is one of the few people who can make fun of Kate Gosselin in such a way as to be vicious and still seem sweet and innocent. Props to anyone who makes fun of Kate Gosselin.

"Dexter: The Third Season": Michael C. Hall continues his amazing run as the forensic scientist/serial killer. The show, just released on DVD, has always been rich because of the way Hall plays the character: a mix of genius and insanity. Did I mention it was preseason? You would be better off going out and picking up the DVD set of this cable series that stars Patrick Swayze as FBI veteran Charles Barker. His years of working undercover have blurred the lines of how far he can go to bring the bad guys down. How far he has gone is fodder for the series. Swayze's performance in "The Beast" is as strong as those done by the likes of Michael Chiklis on "The Shield" or Dennis Franz on "NYPD Blue." The performance is even more remarkable considering Swayze's battle with cancer during the filming.

UPDATE: Here are some more peaches at Craft.

ORIGINAL POST: By now, you know I like to track local food and see where it ends up.

So it's interesting to see how chefs are using David Mas Masumoto's Fay Elberta peaches. A bunch of them adopted his peach trees and harvested the fruit in Del Rey last weekend.

That means a lot of Fay Elbertas on the menu. Check it out:

  • Michelle Polzine, the pastry chef of Range in San Francisco, talked about making peach cobbler, peach tarts, peach sorbet, peach ice cream, and peach-leaf panna cotta. Two of those dishes are on her online menu.
  • Annie Miller, owner of Clementine in Los Angeles, said she was thinking of peach tartines, peach shortcake, and fruit salad. She also talked of a compound peach butter, made by mashing roasted peaches with honey and blending the mixture with butter. That butter, she says, goes well with biscuits.
  • Jesse Ziff Cool of Flea Street Café in Menlo Park is serving grilled Masumoto peaches.
  • Stuart Brioza and Nicole Krasinski, former chefs of the (sadly) shuttered Rubicon, are cooking up a peach dinner tonight at Boulette's Larder in the San Francisco Ferry Building. Brioza was planning dishes such as a salad of duck (smoked over peach wood) and roasted peaches and barbecued lamb with peach glaze.
  • And Eric Hyman, purchasing manager of Waterbar in San Francisco, says the restaurant is serving green salads with chèvre on toast and peaches. The bar is making virgin and spiked versions of peach lemonade.

The book is supposed to contain documents collected by presidents, covering controversial topics such as the JFK assassination, Watergate, and Area 51.

Obama joked, "I would tell you but I'd have to kill you," when asked about the secrets in the book.

So, let's play a game: What conspiracies secrets do you think are in THE BOOK?

It'll be like a Fresno indie rock high school reunion tonight at Audie's Olympic, as Greenladies headline. They're a Portland-band that includes ex-Fresnans Mike Burnett and Scott Moore, both of whom played in Montecore.

To make things even more six-degrees-of-Fresno-indie-rock-ish: Niilo Smeds (who is on the bill with his current project Wheels of Fortune) used to play in Pinkeye and Rademacher, as well as in The Batteries with Burnett.

The Fresnan reported last week that Zapp's Park, the beloved tiny music venue at Olive and Blackstone, would be closing. That's sort of true, but after talking to co-owner Pete Mejia, there's more to the story.

Mejia says he and his business partner, who took over Zapp's in 2005, are not planning on renewing their lease when it ends in a couple months. Instead, they want to look for a new, bigger location.

"The place is too small," Mejia says. "It reached a point where it's not going to work with a smaller venue like that."

Of course, he says, he'd take the Zapp's Park name with him. To not take the name would "ridiculous" he says, citing its history as one of the longest-running venues in Fresno's local music scene.

We're giving away six four-packs of tickets. Each prize will also come with a parking pass. So bring your fam, bring your friends, whatever. And free parking means more money for other stuff.

We'll give the tickets to the FIRST SIX commenters on this post. FYI: I won't post any comments until we have winners. You'll have to come pick up the tickets here at The Bee. Complete rules are on the jump.

Thumbnail image for Thumbnail image for menu_cake-thumb-200x221-24066.jpgUPDATE: In case you haven't seen today's paper, here's why I asked for your reaction to the calorie counts at chain restaurants. Thanks again for your help!

ORIGINAL POST: Remember Donald's astonishment at the calorie counts of Claim Jumper's dishes?

Well, it's been about a month and a half since some chain restaurants were required to supply nutritional information about their dishes.

No doubt, many of you have peeked at the info while dining out. So here are my questions to you:

  1. Do you change what you order based on the information?

  2. Do you split dishes, put half of your meal in a take-out box, skip dessert or order less food to keep your calorie intake down?

  3. Do you say, "to hell with the nutrition police" and eat whatever you want?

  4. Or do you have a different reaction?

Your input helps me on a story. Thanks in advance for playing!

AP_on_TV_Top_Chef.JPG "Top Chef: Season Six," 9 p.m. Bravo: The new season of the cable cooking competition series will have 17 chefs battling for top honors. And this season, they will do all of their cooking against a Las Vegas backdrop. What this show has over "Hell's Kitchen" is that all of the competitors have solid cooking skills. That means each competition on "Top Chef" will be a real test of abilities. Padma Lakshmi returns as the host to presides over the judge's table of Tom Colicchio, Gail Simmons and Toby Young. The likes of Wolfgang Puck, Natalie Portman, Penn & Teller, Hubert Keller, Laurent Tourondel, Tim Love, Tyler Florence, Charlie Palmer, Paul Bartolotta and Jerome Bocuse will stop by to help with each week's competition. Bon appetite!

Patrick Fischler is one of those actors who is in everything. You might not recognize his name, but you definitely know his face.

I was watching the movie "Something's Gotta Give" (skip to minute 6:45) on TNT recently when it occurred to me that Patrick Fischler has appeared in a ton of films, as well as on most of my favorite television shows, including "Bones," "Angel," "Lost" and "Mad Men." His list of credits on IMDb is impressive, and yet he is largely unknown.

The now mostly-defunct site Fametracker used to have a feature called "Hey, it's that guy!" (created for the original "Hey, it's that guy," J.T. Walsh, may he rest in peace) that gave name recognition to actors like Patrick Fischler. No doubt if Fametracker was still in the Internets game, Fischler would have been included long ago.

So this post is a shout-out to Patrick Fischler, and to the other steady-working actors who may never reach the so-called heights of a Brad Pitt, a Tom Hanks or a Meryl Streep.

Hats off to you, sir!

Octuplets.JPG "Octomom: The Incredible Unseen Footage," 8 p.m. KMPH (Channel 26): This is why network television is dying such an ugly death. Two hours of prime-time programming is being given to a woman whose one and only talent is she can give birth. Maybe there's a reason this footage is unseen - there are some people who don't care. Nadya Suleman is a parasite living off the unexplainable fascination the media has heaped on her and her litter. She's not the only one to blame. It is far easier for the media to create its own celebrities than to find real and interesting stories about actual celebrities. There is only one way to stop this madness. Do anything but watch this pathetic excuse for entertainment. As long as we keep watching, these headline making fake celebrities will not go away.

Remember early last year, before she was under the care of her father, the things Britney Spears did that signaled the crazy train was leaving the station?

The crazy, disheveled hair, frequent trips to Starbucks, hanging out with skanks like Paris Hilton and Lindsay Lohan, walking around in public showing off her mommy parts, going into stores in one outfit then coming out in another, randomly dying her hair brown, making appearances on David Letterman's show when she had nothing to promote ...

They were fairly innocuous-sounding activities that ultimately indicated manic behavior. Take a look:

UPDATE: Starline's manager gives his side of last night's incident after the jump.

ORIGINAL POST: It's only Tuesday and it's already a not-so-good week for Starline, the Tower District nightclub and music spot.

Apparently, local band Yesterday's Chonies, which is prone to playing out in the street, had a run in with Starline management last night. Now they're telling people not to go to Starline. The band explains:

[We] were playing music on the street outside Livingstones/Bank of America last night right after closing time (we had played at the open mic night at the Starline earlier). The starline gentleman came out quite aggressively, when he started yelling at me in my face I gave him a rude gesture and he hit my in the face. Our baritone player and he begin to tussel until it was broken up. I was intoxicated, however I feel that even if we were in the wrong the starline gentleman could have approached us differently and not used violence.

Meanwhile, there's now an "I Hate the Starline" group on Facebook. I don't know that these two things are directly related. If not, that's even worse.

Shaq_Trade_Hornets_Sun_Basketball.JPG

"Shaq Vs." 9 p.m. KFSN (Channel 30): Sometimes it is fun to watch a program because there is no doubt it is going to be a major car wreck. This one looks like a 99-car pile-up. NBA star Shaquille O'Neal will go head-to-head with top athletes such as Michael Phelps, Serena Williams and Oscar de la Hoya. This is supposed to be a competition but seems as lopsided as if Shaq decided to play basketball against a jockey.

Tonight, it is Shaq vs. Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger. They will play a 7-on-7 game at a Pennsylvania high school. Even if Shaq loses the competition, you can count on his acting skills to save the day.

I don't think anyone has wanted an Emmy this bad since Kathy Griffin. Here's Stewie Griffin making his case of why "Family Guy" should win the Emmy for best comedy series this year and why the Griffins are better than the Dunder Mifflinites behind "The Office."

I hope this is the first of many -- 'cause I'd say "30 Rock" poses the biggest threat to "Family Guy" and everybody else in that category. I'd also love to see Stewie rip into "Entourage."

For those of you who glossed over the "You Review: Bob Dylan" post, I wanted to make sure you didn't miss this oddly unprovoked comment from cooler-than-all-of-us Sharon:

I was born and raised in Fresno and I moved away as soon as I came of age, danced with happiness to be getting the hell out of there to a place where people actually think. Fresno is populated by brain-dead people who would not recognize a creative genius if he bit them on their buckled asses. I attended many concerts in Fresno before I moved and at every event the audience behaved as though the only reason they attended was to get drunk on beer, argue about God, and fight. I'm so happy I don't live there anymore. The place sucks and the people suck even more.

Heather likes to point out Comment Wins. This is not that, but it is pretty funny in a sad and unfortunate way. Sharon appears to have a disease than afflicts many people who move away and think they're a superior being. It's called Headuptheirownassitis. Thanks for hating Fresno so much, Sharon, but still paying attention to what's happening here.

Me and the other brain-dead sucky people appreciate it and envy you.

Guitar Center has brought back its King of the Blues competition and there's still room for Fresno blues guitarists to test their chops.

A handful of spots are left in the local competition, which could lead to a spot in national finals and a grand prize worth about $40,000.

The Fresno finals will be held Sept. 10. Leading up to that, three preliminarily rounds are being held weekly, starting Thursday. Thirty guitarists total can enter and each week 10 will vie for a spot in the finals. Space is still available for the Sept. 3 prelim. The Fresno winner would next compete in a regional competition held in Rancho Cucamonga.

To get into the competition, you have to head down to Guitar Center, 5330 N Blackstone Ave., to enter in person. More details: (559) 221-2222.

You would think Leno's leap from late-night TV to the prime-time schedule would be a gamble for NBC. The network is giving up five hours that could have been filled with dramas or news shows. But, the ratings won't be the big factor in measuring how well leno has done.

The week of Leno shows will be cheaper to produce than one episode of a drama series. That's why Leno's new show will be declared a hit by NBC no matter how many people watch.

UPDATE: Tree Fresno is offering the city an alternative to removing the trees on Eaton Plaza. It does seem like some compromise could be worked out to keep the big, shady trees, improve safety and create an appealing plaza (though I am still suspicious of whether the trees are really unsafe or if the city wants to create an aesthetically pleasing plaza). What do you think of Tree Fresno's plan?

"Drop Dead Diva," 9 p.m. Sunday: The Lifetime cable show about a self-absorbed beauty who ends up in the body of a plus-size lawyer is becoming one of the better comedy/dramas on TV. This week's episode offers a parallel story that is both compelling and funny about women have to start new lives.

"20Q," 8 p.m. Saturday, The Game Show Network: This is the season finale of the game show that pits man against machine. Its hosted by Cat Deeley. The cable game show isn't "Jeopardy," but still is fun.

I've never been a huge fan of cell phones. Frankly, I think they turn people into inconsiderate a-holes: talking loudly in line at the grocery store; furtively texting while you're trying to talk to them; blatantly texting while you're trying to talk to them.

The iPhone is the epitome of cell phone a-holeism. Friends who used to be capable of semi-intelligent conservation can no longer go ten minutes without checking their phone. They claim it's to look up some unknown fact that must be known right now! (recollection skills, or just plain thinking, is, for many iPhone users, a thing of the past) but typically it's just an excuse to check their Facebook or Twitter pages.

Let's be clear, friends: the iPhone is not turning you into some kind of all-knowing, everything-you-need-at-the-push-of-a-button information god. It's turning you into a mindless a-hole. An a-hole who lets his cell phone do his thinking, socializing, and -- let's be real -- living for him.

All is not lost, however! Salvation is within reach. You must set yourselves free, brothers and sisters -- it's easier than you think (if you have a 9mm and access to Arcade Fire songs, that is). Behold:

My favorite part is when he burns the phone. The little face made from the bullet holes actually contorts into a scream. Because iPhones are demons. Understand?

"South Park" creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone have teamed with Comedy Central to show the rarely-seen, original hand-made "South Park" pilot at southparkstudios.com. In Thursday's Life section I have an interview with Heather Parish, director of the Woodward Shakespeare Festival production of "Richard III," which opens Thursday and continues through Sept. 12. Here's the extended interview:

Question: Before we get to "Richard III," give us a rundown on the Woodward Shakespeare Festival's summer so far at the park in terms of logistics, attendance, etc. After last year's controversies, has it been smooth sailing so far? I did get a letter from a reader saying that the night she was at "As You Like It," competing amplified noise from the amphitheater bothered her.

Answer: For "As You Like It" we had almost 5,000 people come through the gates ready for picnicking and some fun Shakespeare. We've seen more and more veteran WSF attendees come in with their camp chairs and ice chests ready for a great evening under the stars.

As for competing noise from the Amphitheater, I cannot say that everything has been completely smooth. As You Like It heard some events in the Amphitheater whose noise bled over into our venue, thus disrupting our audience's reception of the plays. And a few more are scheduled for Richard III. We have no control over this. The issue of double booking the Park's evening events is an ongoing conversation we are having with the City, but nothing will change for this year.

You gotta give it to Audie Pardon, he's really turned around the once-Club Fred. Under its previous owner, the beloved Tower District music club was losing its luster.

Audie bought the place a couple years back, reinforced the dedication to live music and eventually changed the name to Audie's Olympic, a nod to the club's past as The Olympic Tavern.

Anyhow, the last few months have been stellar over there, with lots of good touring shows. August is particularly packed.

Coming up are dates with touring acts Deke Dickerson, The Valley Arena, Nico Vega and Iron Maidens, plus a homecoming for Greenladies.

My biggest pet peeve: People running/walking in the BIKE lane and not on the sideWALK.

A few times a week, I ride my bike around town and lately, every time I go out, I run, make that swerve around, some person, or groups of people, who apparently think their desire for a wider, smoother space to run/walk trumps my safety. Because, it makes so much sense for bikers to have to merge into traffic with much bigger and faster vehicles, just so these folks can plod along oblivious to everything around them. And, it's not safe for them, either.

I don't necessarily want to pit bikers against joggers or walkers. I'm glad to see people out exercising. And, some people are nice, and get out of the way. I know people can share, like on the Clovis Trails, where the path is meant for all types of recreation.

But, day after day, when I have to deal with careless people -- like the two ladies Tuesday morning walking on Bullard Avenue taking up the bike path AND part of the actual car lane, or the three women walking side-by-side in the Temperance Avenue bike lane with their dogs last week, or the guy a few weeks ago on Shepherd Avenue who was jogging against traffic, straight at me and refused to move over even a little bit -- it makes me lose my patience.

So, joggers/walkers, listen up. The California DMV rules say, "Pedestrians are not allowed in bike lanes when sidewalks are available." So, please, go find a track, a dirt path along a canal, the Clovis or Fresno recreation paths or a sidewalk to use.

It all makes me yearn for Quebec City, Canada, where they make it VERY clear who should be using the bike path:

In tonight's episode of "Dark Blue," Carter's team faces a deadly deadline to save a kidnapped woman. It's up to Ty (Omari Hardwick) as a gangbanger, Dean (Logan Marshall-Green) as a security guard and Jaimie (Nicki Aycox) as a potential victim to track down the woman. This is a first-rate drama packed with loads of action.

Holy Han Solo! A Visalia house that's on the market for $364,900 comes with more than a swimming pool and a place to park your RV. It also has a starfighter capable of destroying enemies from the Empire. In your dreams, that is.

One of the bedrooms of the Southeast Visalia home is awesomely "Star Wars"-inspired, with a bed shaped like a Rebel Alliance Y-Wing fighter jet ...That hangs from the ceiling!!

I'll be blunt here: I know that some people would not appreciate a college/high school production of "Evita," which is basically what you're getting when you attend an "older kids" production at Children's Musical Theaterworks. (Performers are ages 15-20.) Snooty types would be uninterested (and I know this because I've talked to some of them) in seeing young actors portray complex characters who age over a couple of decades.

The way I look at it, I watched a 30-something Madonna play Eva Peron as a teen-ager in the movie version of "Evita," so why shouldn't I watch someone younger play someone older?

The interesting thing is that I liked Kylie Briggs, who played the title role in the CMT production that I saw Saturday night, better as her character aged. (Which is how I felt about the Madonna version, too.) This suggests to me that there's something structural going on here in this oft-performed Andrew Lloyd Webber-Tim Rice work. Even with a much younger actor playing Eva, it's still hard for her opening scenes to match those that come later in the play.

Check out this handy Booze Death Calculator that will, given your size and beverage of choice, tell you how many drinks consumed in a three-hour time period will do you in.

Ten vodka martinis would be the death of me, it turns out. Thank goodness my cut off is nine.

It would take 10 Vodka Martinis to kill me

I can't be certain, but I think I just talked to Richard Kiel, the guy from "The Spy Who Loved Me" and "Happy Gilmore," while waiting in line at Subway.

I was standing there staring at the chips and trying to decide if the 100 fewer calories in a bag of sour cream and onion Lays outweighed my craving for Cheetos (ultimately it did not), when the guy in front of me turned and said something. Having a low blood sugar moment, I rudely answered back, "What?" "How many are you having?" the man asked.

"How many what?" I asked, equally as rude as before.

"Sandwiches," he answered. "I'm ordering five, so if you want to go ahead of me, you can."

millionaire.jpg "Who Wants to be a Millionaire?" 8 p.m. KFSN (Channel 30): The brief return of the game show to nighttime continues on ABC. "Millionaire" has gone through some changes since it was last in primetime. Along with the addition of a clock to keep the game moving, it now features celebrity help for the contestants. CNN's Wolf Blitzer is tonight's help for the "Ask the Expert" lifeline. The clock is a good idea. The celebrity is a bit of a waste. The show also includes a segment where a celebrity gets to answer one question to win dollars for charity. Sherri Shepherd from "The View" is in the hot seat tonight. Because the celebrity gets all of the lifelines for just one question, it would take a real brain freeze not to win the charity money.

Here's a look back at the weekend that was. For me, it was a hectic Friday, a chill Saturday and a couch potato Sunday. Feel free to brag about your weekend in the comments.

FRIDAY: I started off Friday evening by attending the Creative Fresno Blender, held at 1060 Fulton, 11 stories in the Fresno sky. The view was spectacular, and the gorgeous lofts were made even more splendid with the addition of artwork by Aileen Imperatrice. Adding to the cool atmosphere was music provided by KFSR deejay and music blogger Jefferson Beavers. All in all, it was a lovely Blender. Just one complaint, though: why the hell was the bar located on the second floor? My guess: The hair salon hijacked that s***. Look into it, Creative Fresno!

Following the Blender, I experienced the worst service I've ever had, in any restaurant, at Hero's. I'd go into details, but Hero's service issues have been documented on this blog before; it's nothing new. The only difference this time is that I've made the decision to stay away from the restaurant indefinitely. (I guess with the closing of Milano, I'll be eating at ... )

What better way to bring up the spirits after a crap meal than with a trip to Suzie's porn store? The less said about this, the better, probably ...

Sad news for lovers of downtown, music fans and pizza eaters -- Fulton Mall eatery Milano will be closing its doors this month.

Co-owner Kendall Simsarian passed along word this afternoon that the restaurant will be shutting down on Aug. 21, but will stay open for already-scheduled concerts on Aug. 22 and 29. The news puts a somber spin on the showing of "Fresno: A City Reborn" scheduled for Milano on Wednesday.

Milano opened in April 2007, in the Fulton Mall space that previously housed The Fulton, Mom & Pop's and Candy's. Its closing is a blow to downtown, no doubt, and to a music scene that also lost Crossroads recently.

No more Megazones. No more local rock shows. No more ArtHops. No more Rogue Festival events. Just another casualty for locally-owned, community-oriented business.

Louis-Theroux-in-The-City-001.jpg

Another documentarian is examining life in Fresno. But as far as we know, this one has nothing to do with skateboards and foreclosures.

"The City Addicted to Crystal Meth" -- the work of Louis Theroux -- aired on BBC 2 on Sunday, with Fresno at its center.

Unfortunately, all the videos I've been able to find online are region restricted, meaning us Americans can't watch them. Until one of you video nerds can hack a copy for us, here's the synopsis:

Central Valley, California, is home to some of the most impoverished rural towns in America, where crystal meth addiction is prolific. In Fresno, Louis finds a community ravaged by this cheap and highly addictive drug.

As he infiltrates the town, he experiences the reality of meth abuse, as addicts who are high (or 'tweaking', as it is known) invite him into their homes to see them take hit after hit of their favourite drug. Louis becomes surrounded by the madness of daily addiction and the meth-addled confusion which is breaking this community apart

Somewhere between the hundreds of thousands of dollars spent to produce programing for television and cable networks and the hundreds of cents needed to make viral videos fill the Internet is the world of online series. A variety of Web sites now offer original programming that looks like a TV series but each webisodes are produced on a super tight budget.

"The Lake," the new Web series at TheWB.com is the latest example of this programming concept. The 12 episodes -- varying in length from four to 12 minutes -- were produced in 12 days for less money that it takes to make one episode of a situation comedy. The first four episodes were released on the Web site today and four new ones will be available next Monday. The final four will be posted Aug. 24.

Director Jason Priestley (yes, that guy from "Beverly Hills, 90210), says making the series was a challenge.

I generally don't watch reality show competitions (except for "Rock of Love," because it's too magical to ignore), so I of course did not see the following clip from "America's Got Talent" on live TV.

However, thanks to "The Soup" and my DVR, I was able to catch whatever this is after the fact:

I don't know what's going on here, but I was compelled to rewind and watch it back not less than six times, and for that, these guys deserve to win. And I mean win everything: "America's Got Talent," "American Idol," "So You Think You're America's Best Dance Crew" -- if it has "America" in the title, these guys own it.

I have never been so proud of the U.S.A.

I wrote in my column last Friday about my inner struggle with the new "G.I. Joe" movie. The kid in me is elated to see the Joes on the big screen, but modern me is educated enough to know the big-screen adaption will suck.

... or will it?

I haven't submitted and seen it yet, but I have heard good things from friends and FresBlogger Brodiemash -- a nerd of my same generation -- liked it enough.

The movie did as expected at the box office, bowing at No. 1 while bringing in $56.2 million domestically. It's only gotten a 39% rating at Rotten Tomatoes, though.

So who saw "G.I. Joe" and liked it enough to try to convince me to see it? Who saw it and thinks I should stay away forever?

I will say this: I saw "(500) Days of Summer" over the weekend, and that made me want to see "G.I. Joe" even less -- considering the wussy, whiny kid that stars in it is also Cobra Commander.

UPDATE:The Rue and Gwen Gibson Farm Market at Fresno State has lost its bid to become America's favorite small farmers market.

Looks like the Collingswood Farmers Market in Collingswood, NJ had a last push of votes to beat Fresno State, 1031 to 948.

logo-home-page.gifORIGINAL POST: It looks like the Rue and Gwen Gibson Farm Market at Fresno State has a good shot at winning the title of "favorite small farmers market in America."

With only two days left in American Farmland Trust's online contest, Fresno State is leading its category with more than 780 votes.

That's good news for Fresno State, but what about the Valley's other farmers markets?

It turns out that Fresno State's market is the only one listed for the Fresno area. If any of the others were contenders, I wonder if Fresno State would still do so well, or if we'd split the votes so much that none of our markets would win.

In any case, if you want to support Fresno State, cast your votes by 9 p.m. Saturday. If Fresno State wins, it'll get 500 "No Farms No Food" totebags to distribute over Labor Day Weekend.

Mike already gave you a list of things to do tonight, but I want to make a special mention for the Creative Fresno Blender, taking place on the 11th floor of the Fresno Pacific Towers, formerly the Security Bank Building.

If you haven't already been up to the lofts on 11th floor, I highly recommend attending the Blender tonight. By visiting each of the four lofts, you will get a 360-degree view of Fresno, and let me tell you, friends, Fresno looks amazing from up there.

In addition to an unparalleled view of the Sierra Nevada, and green trees spread all across town, you'll get a fun look at all kinds of downtown landmarks, including the Courthouse, Chukchansi Park, the Greyhound Bus depot and the Holiday Inn, which I'm sorry to say has the saddest-looking pool ever.

The death of writer/director John Hughes got me thinking about my favorite 80s movies. It's funny, as much as I love "Sixteen Candles," and "The Breakfast Club," my VERY favorite 80s flick is, like, for sure, "Valley Girl." I love the music, the ridiculous dialog (Man, he's like tripendicular, ya know?) and the bad-boy (a young Nicolas Cage) turning the preppy-girl (Deborah Foreman) to the dark Hollyweird side.

What's your fave?

The moment you walked into Corridor 2122 last night at ArtHop you could feel it: there was a buzz in the air, an electricity, a crackle of excitement. The fifth annual edition of the summer show "Splash" was here, and it was clear that curator William Raines had once again whipped together a lively, provocative, sophisticated show that he subtitles "Altered Narratives."

One thing that sets this annual event apart is its brevity. Rather than being on display for a month, as is traditional for most galleries, "Splash" is a brisk affair. In fact, that's one of the connotations of the title -- a splash lasts but for a moment. The show opened for ArtHop and is only on view Saturday and Sunday. (Hours are noon-4 p.m.)

Though some artists participating in past "Splash" shows have taken the title more literally, including various interesting depictions of actual water, this year Raines assured a more eclectic reaction by asking artists to focus on presenting narrative through collage.

I now know why Gordon Ramsay uses so much foul language on his Fox shows "Hell's Kitchen" and "Kitchen Nightmares." Trying to cook can be a $%&#$ hard time.

Ramsay showed up at the TV critics meetings to talk about his new Fox series "Gordon Ramsay" Cookalong Live." During the new one-hour TV show, Ramsay will prepare several dishes that are easy to make and inexpensive.

To promote the show Ramsay arrived with loads of kitchen items. Each critic was given a metal bowl, a whisk, sugar and egg whites. The task was to create the meringue that would be put on ice cream to create Baked Alaska.

Whipping a few eggs to a white cream seemed like an easy task. Soon I would realize it would have been easier to walk to Alaska, buy a Baked Alaska and carry it back to Pasadena on my head.

"The Hurt Locker": Director Kathryn Bigelow crafts an exciting yet cerebral film about a team of bomb dismantlers in Baghdad. The action sequences are riveting, but there's an arc to the film that's more primal than anything -- not interested in political ideologies or morality, but rather confronting humanity's underlying impulses toward conflict. (Read Donald Munro's review here)

One of the best episodes of "The Simpson" had Homer Simpson being sent to a mental institution. There, he became friends with a very large white man who said he was Michael Jackson.

When Simpson gets released, he invites Michael to come to his home for a visit. Michael ends up writing a song for Bart to sing to Lisa as her birthday gift.

Everybody: "Lisa it's your birthday..."

It was a secret at the time Jackson did the voice and he was credited as John Jay Smith. Yeardley Smith, the voice of Lisa for two decades, says Jackson showed up at the recording session to work with the cast. She found him to be a rather shy person and a big fan of the show.

What you might not know was that it wasn't Jackson who sang the birthday song. His record company would not allow him to do the tune.

"Michael hand picked the person to sing the song. It was this skinny little white guy who sounded just like him. Imagine the pressure of singing like Michael Jackson in front of Michael Jackson," Smith said during breakfast. She had traveled to Pasadena to talk with TV critics about the 20th anniversary of her series.

That singer was Kipp Lennon. He is the younger brother of the female quartet The Lennon Sisters.

TMZ is reporting that writer, director and producer John Hughes, 59, has passed away. According to reports, Hughes had a heart attack while taking a walk in New York City.

Though he hadn't directed a movie since 1991's "Curly Sue," Hughes holds a special place in film history as director of a string of much-beloved coming-of-age movies from the 1980s, among them "Sixteen Candles," "The Breakfast Club," "Weird Science" and "Ferris Bueller's Day Off."
He also wrote "Pretty in Pink" and "Some Kind of Wonderful."

After the 80s, Hughes wrote and produced more child-friendly fare like the "Home Alone" and "Beethoven" movies, "Flubber" and "101 Dalmations."

Condolences to his family, friends and fans.

Fresno's Jason Glover and Caitlin Kinney performed the Bollywood dance number they had performed while contenders on "So You Think You Can Dance" this morning for television critics. The dancers left immediately after their performance to go to the Kodak Theatre where they will perform on tonight's season finale.

Asked about Glover, "So You Think You Can Dance" choreographer and guest judge Mia Michaels described him as being "very alive" and having a "wonderful, wonderful work ethic."

She has warned him about doing too much exercising, especially with his upper body. Michaels said Glover has developed so much he has become a little stiff.

The "So You Think You Can Dance" finale starts at 8 p.m. tonight on KMPH (Channel 26).

UPDATE: Cat Deeley's fashion didn't disappoint during last night's final competition show. She sparkled. Just check out those shoes -- fantastic!

And, we still get one more look tonight.

ORIGINAL: One of the best things about "So You Think You Can Dance" is host Cat Deeley. She's witty, gorgeous and interestingly stylish. And she's nice. I met her on my vacation when she was doing a stand-up for the fall version of SYTYCD in a square outside the Old North Church in Boston (think "One if by land, two if by sea"). Here's a photo of our meeting (that's my husband with us):

Besides the dancing, I watch SYTYCD for Cat's fashion. Check these looks out from this season:

Peter Rice, Chairman, Entertainment, Fox Broadcasting, and Kevin Reilly, President, Entertainment, Fox Broadcasting, met with TV critics this morning to talk about the upcoming season.

As you might imagine, most of the conversation had to do with the departure of Paula Abdul from "American Idol."

"It is saddening to us. Paula was an important part of the 'Idol' family," Rice said. He added Abdul was the only member of the "Idol" family whose contract was up this year. She was offered -- as he put it -- a "substantial raise" and she decided not to return to the show.

There has been no time for the Fox bosses to sit around and lament the loss of Abdul. Auditions for the next season start tomorrow. To fill the empty judge chair, several guest judges will be brought in. Rice confirmed Katy Perry and Victoria Beckham are on board to be guest judges during the preliminary rounds. All of the guest judges will be female artists.

As a way to promote its series "Top Chef: Las Vegas," the Bravo cable channel staged a live "Quickfire" challenge for television critics. One team was made up of contestants from the current season and included Ashley Merriman, Michael Isabella and Mattin Noblia.

The team from past shows had a familiar face: Ryan Scott, a graduate of Los Banos High School. He was kicked off season four of the series when he failed the challenge at a Chicago Bears tailgate party. He's partnered with Fabio Viviani from "Top Chef: New York" and Antonia Lofaso from "Top Chef: Chicago."

Scott says while he didn't win his season of "Top Chef," the show has been a big boost for his career.

"It catapulted my name to where I get stopped on the street. I was able to launch Ryan Scott 2 Go and that has been doing really well," Scott says just moments before the competition.

As I'm sure regular Beehive readers are aware, blogfather Mike Oz is luxuriating in vacation bliss this week. (Either that or wandering the streets bitterly contemplating life after 30.) He's usually the go-to man for weekend plans, but he (very kindly, I might add) left you a handy list of fliers for the week. I'm hoping the rest of you can chime in with anything we missed. What are your plans?

As for me, one of the highlights of ArtHop tonight is Aileen Imperatrice's show on the 11th floor of Fresno Pacific Towers (aka the Security Bank Building). I'll be there. I'm looking forward to the art and the views! Another not-to miss ArtHop event, at Gallery 25, is "Five + 5," an exchange exhibition with the [5] Art gallery of Tampa, Fla.

Getting up early is no problem for Al Roker. He has never liked sleeping. Roker says even as a child he only slept about six hours each night.

An 8 a.m. breakfast interview at the television critics meeting with Al Roker at is actually late in the day for the "Today" weatherman. On a regular work day, Roker would have gotten out of bed at 3:30 a.m. and been to work at about 5 a.m. He has to do some extra work these days since "Wake Up With Al" launched on the Weather Channel.

Roker and Stephanie Abrams host a one-hour show that is a mix of weather forecasts, news and interviews. The show airs on the cable channel at 6 a.m. and then Roker moves over to be on "Today." He and Abrams then do another version of their morning show at 10 a.m. in New York that is seen at 7 a.m. on the West Coast.

"What this amounts to is that I have done the prep work for the 'Today' show," Roker says after finishing breakfast.

MORE VARTANIAN NEWS: Yes, the story lives on. The front page of today's Bee chronicles the latest woes of Krikor "Kirk" Vartanian, who has graced this blog many times before. From Pablo Lopez's story:

The businessman who promised to breathe new life into Fresno's troubled Granite Park development was charged Tuesday with stealing more than half a million dollars from customers of his luxury-car dealership. Vartanian faces 16 felony counts of grand theft.

In a Web update, Pablo expanded on one of the most remarkable parts of the story:

Former Fresno State women's basketball coach Stacy Johnson-Klein paid Krikor "Kirk" Vartanian $225,000 for a Bentley but never received the car or a refund despite numerous demands, according to an affidavit that supports an arrest warrant against Vartanian that was released this morning.

My two cents: I'm aware that Johnson-Klein, who won $7.3 million in a well-known lawsuit against Fresno State, is entitled to do whatever she wants with her money. But a Bentley? To drive around Fresno? Not exactly living inconspicuously, eh? I'd be afraid to park at Target.

GUN BUYBACK:
Speaking of big red bulls-eye logos, you might have missed this Monday story about an upcoming event Saturday at the Fresno Fairground in which the city will buy guns, no questions asked, to get them off the streets. If you turn in an assault weapon, you'll get a $200 Target gift card. Is that marketing symmetry or what? I can see it now: Sales of violent video games will soar.

You know how I've been making fun of Kevin Federline's insane weight gain lately? Well, it looks like the fat bastard may be having the last laugh. From RadarOnline:

"Federline is reportedly considering an endorsement deal with a company called EP-2 (Extreme Physical Performance). The source said the former back up dancer has been offered $2.5 million to become the new face of the fat-burning tool which is set to hit over 1,400 GNC stores."

I've said it before, and it remains true to this day: Kevin Federline is the ultimate Fresno success story. You can't hate a guy for becoming a millionaire off marrying a mentally unstable pop star. You just can't.

It's a good week for food lovers escaping the Valley heat in movie theaters.

The reform minded are checking out "Food, Inc."at Sierra Vista Cinemas in Clovis. And those into food porn are smacking their lips at "Julie & Julia," which opens Friday.

These aren't the only films about food worth watching this year. "Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs" hits theaters Sept. 18. And a documentary about young farmers called "The Greenhorns" is scheduled for a November release.

"The Greenhorns" features at least one local farmer: Chris Velez, of Stella Luna Farm in Auberry. Velez and his wife, Jamie Carr, grow five acres of heirloom vegetables. They sell their wares at Mar-Val in Prather, as well as through community supported agriculture, a service that connects farmers directly to shoppers. All of Stella Luna's produce is certified organic and biodynamic.

Here's a look at Velez in "The Greenhorns" trailer (at 1:22). At the time of filming, he was the manager of Intermountain Nursery in Prather.

Well, it looks as if we won't have good ol' Paula Abdul to kick around anymore. After interminable speculation, she's off "American Idol" as a judge, supplanted by the younger (and, admittedly, more coherent) Kara DioGuardi, who deigned to strip down to a bikini on last season's finale show, which must have given her an advantage in her own contract negotiations.

After all the complaining I've done about Paula over the years, I have to admit that I'll miss her a little. I got used to that pregnant moment of silence before she'd launch into her critiques: Would this be one of these times that she'd actually be coherent? Or would her sentences and phrases slip and slide around her, twisting into bizarre non sequiturs and trailing thoughts, until she'd become a tangled knot of semi-independent clauses and prepositions? I'd always hold my breath a little when she started to speak, actually rooting for her, hoping that all her synapses would fire correctly this time around. If the show got too boring, there was always Paula to add a loopy "huh?" to the proceedings.

That said, you also can't deny that Paula made good copy. Here's a sampling of some of the snotty things that Beehivers have written about Paula over the years:

Two top programming executives at NBC, Angela Bromstad (President, Primetime Entertainment) and Paul Telegdy (Executive Vice President, Alternative Programming and Productions), just met with television critics to discuss programming plans for the network. Here are some highlights:

Ratings for the first week of Jay Leno's new 10 p.m. weeknight talk show will be scrutinized, but his success will be judged on how well he does over the long haul. There is a contingency plan just in case Leno's ratings drop too much. And while Conan O'Brien is not getting the same overall numbers that Leno had when he hosted "The Tonight Show," NBC is happy O'Brien wins in the key demographic of 18-49 year olds.

Although summer shows like "Merlin" and "The Philanthropist" were marginal success stories in the ratings, NBC will make some changes when programming next summer. The next season of "Friday Night Lights" will not air until next summer. "Chuck" is not scheduled to return until March and episodes could be spread out into the summer.

The network has no plans to hire Paula Abdul now that she has left "American Idol."

There is a chance for a version of "The Apprentice" -- without celebrities.

Changes have been made to "Southland." Bromstad says the first season had too much going on and that is why the show will focus more on the characters played by Regina King and Ben McKenzie this year.

Joan Rivers trades an interest in fashion for a curiosity about finance in her new series. The first of six 30-minute episodes debuts tonight.

Rivers chats with those who have become rich and famous -- she's looking for people who became rich in unique ways, such as the guy who has sold millions of the novelty item Billy Bob Teeth. The show might not be that deep, but you can always count on Rivers to be entertaining -- either in a good or bad way.

If Ashley Jensen was the star of the new CBS comedy "Accidentally on Purpose," she could be accused of method acting. She showed up to meet with television critics to talk about the show in a very pregnant state.

It is Jenna Elfman's character on "Accidentally on Purpose" who gets pregnant in the first episode. The father is a much younger man. The comedy will come from the clash of their two worlds. Jensen plays the best friend to Elfman's character.

"I am due in the fall," the Scottish actress says with a big smile. That was all the information she will reveal. She won't give out the exact due day. She either really hasn't picked out names or she doesn't want anyone to know. And, she says she doesn't know whether it will be a boy or a girl.

All that matters is her real pregnancy doesn't fit the TV show. Jensen, who previously appeared on "Ugly Betty" and the HBO series "Extras," will have to carry a lot of large folders and packages in the first few episodes to hide her pregnancy.

This afternoon I committed to watching "Rookie of the Year" on AMC.

Young Thomas Ian Nicholas is adorable, Gary Busey is not yet crazy, and, after 16 years, the phrase "funky butt-loving!" still reduces me to a fit of giggles -- not an unpleasant way to spend the afternoon.

As an added bonus, it was while watching ROTY, that I saw a commercial for a "Mad Men" season 2 marathon starting 7 a.m. Monday.

s3-keyart-789.jpg

Listen, people: This is your chance to catch up on the show that every single cool person you know (namely, me, and to a lesser extent, Mike Oz) watches. It was just nominated for sixteen Emmy Awards, but don't let that deter you -- it's a really good show.

Go to the video store, rent season one, watch it (it's just thirteen episodes), DVR the marathon on Monday, watch that (also just thirteen eps), then tune in August 16th for the premiere of season 3. You will not be sorry.

Totally unrelated: I also saw that AMC is showing "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid" Saturday afternoon at 3:30. I say this so no one asks me what I'm doing this weekend. I'm doing this.

layer_howtoorder.gifWe've done a Beehive poll and a story about your favorite ice creams, but the phone calls and e-mails keep on coming.

In particular, I keep hearing two questions: Where can I get Morgan Hill (formerly Braun's) ice cream? And will Blue Bell ice cream ever come to California?

Here are the answers:

  • Morgan Hill Creamery: If you miss your Coconut Almond Joy and other flavors from Braun's, hunt for the Morgan Hill brand. A Morgan Hill rep gives us some good news: Loren Braun is still the visionary behind Morgan Hill ice creams. And he's creating more flavors.

You can place an order online, or go to Irene's in the Tower District for a nice selection of Morgan Hill products.

Finding Morgan Hill in other local stores is more difficult. The Morgan Hill rep and its distributor wouldn't respond to my requests for a list of Valley stores that stock the ice cream.

Not sure what's up with all the secrecy, but it's not going to stop us from enjoying the ice cream. Anyone else have a Morgan Hill sighting? Drop it in the comments.

One of the great things about being in Southern California for the Television Critics meetings is that it provides the opportunity to catch up with some of Fresno's finest. Audra McDonald is all smiles as she talks with television critics who have invaded the set of her ABC series "Private Practice."

The Fresno native, who plays Dr. Naomi Bennett, is happy with the series. But she is thrilled with being a mom even though she sees a lot of herself in her daughter Zoe.

"She is a very emotional, sensitive, dramatic child which is what I was," McDonald says with a laugh. "But she is also very, very sweet and hyper aware of what is going on."

The downside of being on the Los Angeles-based "Private Practice" is that McDonald flies home to New York every weekend. She has no plans to move to the West Coast despite the fact "Private Practice" is a hit. That's because McDonald would never uproot Zoe from New York.

One of the permanent sets in one of the stages at the Raleigh Studios in Hollywood is the apartment of mystery writer Richard Castle. The role is played by Nathan Fillion on the ABC drama "Castle."

Launched as a mid-season replacement, "Castle" will return September 21.

The producers are having some fun with the idea their main star is a mystery writer who has been following a detective, played by Stana Katic, around. She has become the inspiration for the lead character in Castle's next book "Heat Wave."

On Sept. 29, "Heat Wave" actually will be released by Hyperion. It will be promoted as if it had been written by Richard Castle. Fans of the TV show will see how episodes have been incorporated into the book.

During my trip to the set, I picked up a preview copy of the book. Here's the first paragraph from Chapter One:

The CW Network President of Entertainment Dawn Ostroff talked about the upcoming season for the network with the TV critics who have gathered in Pasadena. Here are some of the highlights.

Tweet this: It is obvious with shows like "Gossip Girl" and "90210" the CW Network's programming is aimed at young women. So, it should not be a surprise that there have been more than 200 million video streams on its web site. "Gossip Girl" has nearly one and a half million fans on Facebook. "One Tree Hill" has more than a million fans on Facebook. Ostroff says someone tweets about the CW Network once a minute.

Not so super time slot: "Smallville" moves to Fridays in the fall. That's the night when the target audience will be on a date. Ostroff explains the reason for the move is because "we felt the best way to open up Friday night was with a big, established hit like 'Smallville.'" Although there has been talk this will be the last season for "Smallville," the CW boss says there is a lot of life left in the show and she would like to see it continue.

Forget Sunday: Because of the bad economy, there will be no CW Network programming on Sundays. Ostroff wants to concentrate on Monday through Friday. Also, the network will concentrate on one-hour dramas and not half-hour comedies.

An unfortunate and frustrating incident unfolded at Friday night's performance of the CenterStage Clovis Community Theater production of "Beauty and the Beast." I don't think there are any easy answers here. I'll try to present the situation as dispassionately as I can:

A local woman, Tammy Moraga, read about "Beauty and the Beast" in The Bee, and she and her husband decided they wanted to take their 10-year-old son to the show. He is a special needs child with autism. Moraga contacted the theater beforehand and asked if she could bring a special-needs child. The theater readily agreed, and a board member escorted mother and son to their reserved seats, which were configured for a wheelchair.

Here's where perspectives differ. Moraga says her son was enjoying the show very much and laughing with excitement. She says he sat comfortably in his wheelchair the entire time and did not scream or cry. There were a few points in the show, she says, where he did laugh in between scenes when no other children were laughing, but he was in no way making a scene, she says.

Comparisons are going to be made. The CW Network's new drama "The Vampire Diaries" has a familiar look. It is about a young girl in a small town who falls for a brooding high school hunk.

It sounds like the people behind "Twilight" might have grounds for a lawsuit. But, the books the new fall TV series is based on were released before the "Twilight" books.

That's not going to stop the countless comparisons that will be between "Twilight's" vampire heartthrob Robert Pattinson and "Vampire's" Paul Wesley. The two could have been separated at birth.

Wesley was ready to be asked about the resemblance when he showed up in Pasadena to talk to TV critics.

"Prior to shooting the pilot, I had never seen 'Twilight.' And I specifically went out of my way to not watch 'Twilight' because I didn't want it to in any way influence me because I knew that it was a similar subject matter," Wesley says. "And now, I've actually never watched the movie in its entirety, but I've seen parts of it. And, you know, I don't think that it would be wise for any actor to make any judgments on their character or decisions based on anyone else.

"I think if there are similarities to Robert Pattinson's character in "Twilight," so be it. I take the scripts ... and I do my honest, best portrayal. And then anything else -- any, like, similarities, that's sort of an after effect."

It is an after effect that could draw viewers to the new CW series.

CBS ended its day of the Television Critics Association meetings with a party at the Huntington Library Monday night. And it wasn't just CBS stars who showed up to chat. Stars from the CW Network and Showtime channels were on hand since they are owned by the same company.

llcoolj.jpg

In attendance was Jennifer Love Hewitt, Julianna Marguiles, Simon Baker, LL Cool J, Rob Morrow, Alex O'Loughlin, Patricia Arquette, Sophia Bush, Mary Hart and John Lithgow, to name a few.

I asked O'Loughlin, the star of the new CBS series "Three Rivers," if he has talked to any of the fans who were upset when his former CBS series "Moonlight" was canceled after only one year. He had. The fans told him they were very upset. Then O'Loughlin smiled and said, "How do you think I felt?"

Actors often point to the likes of Tom Hanks, Meryl Streep, Clark Gable or Jimmy Stewart when they speak of the performers who have been their greatest influence. LL Cool J, the star of the new CBS series "NCIS: Los Angeles" proved he is definitely an original. His acting influence was Bruce Lee because Lee could be tough or kind. And, Lee was not afraid to go from a career he had mastered to try acting. LL Cool J could have been talking about himself.

Elle Macpherson
, who plays a no-nonsense modeling agency boss in the new CW series "The Beautiful Life," explained the character is not based on anyone she had worked for over her years of modeling. The character is just based on the 47-year-olds own modeling experiences.

"The Big Bang Theory's" Jim Parsons seemed to still be riding the high of winning the individual acting award at the TCA Awards. He made a point of tracking down writers he had talked to Saturday night to say hello. The last actor I saw do that was Tom Hanks.

Music legend Joan Baez fielded a variety of questions from television critics to promote the PBS "American Masters" offering "Joan Baez: Sing Me Home. " It will air Oct. 14. You will be able to read what Baez had to say about music, her career and Woodstock closer to the air date.

Here's one preview: she won't be talking about Bob Dylan. Baez was a major influence on Dylan's early music career but don't ask her about it. When asked about her current relationship with Dylan, Baez said, "Well, I don't really have one."

Pressed to explain why, she added, "'American Masters' made a magnificent documentary on him. And once you've seen it, you won't ever really have another question of me about Bob Dylan."

At that point, Baez suggested it was time to move on to another topic.

The story that came out after the interview, and not from Baez, was that after doing so much for Dylan's early career he did not bring her on stage at a big show in Europe. That embarrassed Baez. It appears she has never forgotten that snub.

Don Mischer, executive producer of "The 61st Primetime Emmy Awards," is facing what is probably an impossible task. He told television critics Monday afternoon that it was his plan to "reshape the Emmys" to protect the annual salute to TV's best as a television event.

In other words, he had better come up with a way to make the awards show more interesting or it may go the way of the Cable ACE Awards. Ratings dropped again last year. And that slide is a TV mortal sin.

Here's his big idea. Eight of the 28 statues to be handed out Sept. 20, on CBS, will be taped about two hours before the actual telecast. The categories -- two each for actors, producers, directors and writers -- will be edited down to pick up valuable seconds. The edited versions will be shown in the telecast.

The title character in "Suor Angelica" has died many, many times in this opera's long history. But it's hard to imagine a performance sticking with me more solidly than Samantha KnJoi's in Sunday's California Opera production at the Shaghoian Concert Hall.

KnJoi, a recent transplant to Fresno from Huntsville, Ala., shoehorned such angst and passion into those dying moments that I heard several audience members gasp. Singing her final aria, she combined anguish with a placid, beatific resignation to her fate. At one point she ended up flat on her back, singing straight up into the rafters of the Shaghoian, and her full voice still soared. In the most exquisite image of the afternoon, a young boy stood near her feet beckoning the dying Angelica forward. Was this her dead son urging her to heaven or a mere hallucination? In the grasp of the ecstasy of her voice, you were hard-pressed to know the difference.

Stage director Edna Garabedian treats opera as a full body experience, that's for sure. I love the flourish and style of her vision, and the way that she can turn the barest of stages into a full-fledged operatic world. Once again, she managed to mount a full festival in Fresno through what seems at times like little more than sheer force of will.

All I know is that I want to break up with mine. It'll be a tough split, I think. My Dry Cleaner -- one of the biggies in town -- is oh so convenient to my house. But I can't stand the way my laundered shirts keep getting mangled. Time and again I rip open the plastic bag to find errant creases and crumpled sleeves. And all for $9 for five shirts! I take them back and complain to get them redone, but, alas, what a pain. Somewhere along the line I got the impression that if I paid that money, I'd have a crisp shirt that's ready-to-wear without having having to iron it myself. Silly me.

So, I'm taking an extremely informal poll. Is there a dry cleaner in town that actually satisfies people in terms of price and quality? Who should I avoid? Write us a dry-cleaner love letter. Or tell us how you keep getting burned.

UPDATE 8/3: This item got used in the Buzz on Page 2 of Monday's Bee, so I thought I'd make it easier to find. A friend writes:

Alas, I have had the same problems with, I am sure, the same dry cleaner. The have ruined several of my husband's shirts and, until I quit them over two years ago, several blouses and one skirt. I filed a complaint with the Better Business Bureau--and talked to the operating manager personally---they denied everything. I was so angry I thought of picketing them....then I realized I would look like (more of a) loon!

Hey, I'd join her on that picket line ...

"Bones," "NCIS: Los Angeles," "Three Rivers" and "Dollhouse" are on different networks, on different nights and at different hours. They all have one thing in common. They are filmed on some of the most impressive sets in television.

A whirlwind trip to the four sets to interview the cast was also a chance to see the staggering set structures. The set for "Three Rivers," a new CBS medical drama, is a collision of Best Buy and a four-star hotel. The two-story set looks like a posh hotel but is full of the high-tech equipment needed for transplant surgery.

Another new CBS show, "NCIS: Los Angeles" is also a contradiction in settings. Part of the set looks like an old mission. Other areas are filled with loads of surveillance equipment. If you saw the preview of the new series on "NCIS," this set is different. The explanation for the change is that the former location was compromised and the undercover operation had to be moved.

Both the "Dollhouse" set and the main "Bones" set are also massive. The main "Dollhouse" set looks like the center court for a mall. And, you could play arena football in the main "Bones" set. The "Bones" set reportedly cost $4 million to build.

Here are some photos of the "Three Rivers" set.

The first big announcement by CBS at the Television Critics Association meetings is that the network is dusting off "Let's Make a Deal." A new version of the game show will be broadcast on CBS daytime starting Oct. 5.

Here's the bad news. After 57 years, "Guiding Light" will go off the air to make room for "Deal" to move into that time slot. It is just another example of how the daytime drama format is an endangered species.

Nina Tassler, president of CBS Entertainment, says test episodes of three game shows were filmed and "Deal" was the best.

Monty Hall hosted the original "Let's Make a Deal" when it was on the air from 1963-1977. Reruns still pop up on the Game Show Network. Wayne Brady has been picked to be the host of the new version.

Brady's former "Whose Line Is It Anyway?" co-star Drew Carey is already hosting "The Price Is Right." Now, Ryan Stiles needs to get a job on a new version of "Password," Greg Proops should be hired to host an all new "Card Sharks" and Colin Mochrie should be picked for a new version of "The Match Game" and the "Whose Line" gang would be all together.

"Curb Your Enthusiasm" star Larry David, the creative force behind the former NBC comedy, told television critics there will be a "Seinfeld" reunion on his HBO show.

David and every member of the "Seinfeld" cast have been asked repeatedly about a reunion. The answer was always that there would be no reunion.

"I kept thinking about the idea. I started to think of different scenarios and how we could pull this off, and I called Jerry [Seinfeld]. And Jerry was game. And I said, 'Well, I'll call the others,' and I did. And we did it," David told TV critics gathered in Pasadena.

Here's what is going to happen: Everything from rehearsals to the filming of the reunion will be shown on a series of episodes of "Curb." But, the episode they are making will never air in its entirety. It will only be seen as the bits and pieces on "Curb."

It isn't a real reunion, but even bits and pieces of a "Seinfeld" show should be better than 90% of the comedies currently on the networks.

"Air Jaws: Sharks of South Africa"
8 p.m. on Discovery Channel

"Shark Week" continues on the cable channel with this program that includes scenes of white sharks throwing themselves out of the water to attack their prey. Admit it. Sharks are just cool.

The great whites of South Africa's False Bay are the best because they are the only ones to take such a spectacular way of tracking down dinner.

The "Shark Week" programming is both highly entertaining and educational. Be sure to catch the other shark programs airing over the rest of week, including the "MythBusters - Jaws Special" episode at 8 p.m. Wednesday.

"The Big Bang Theory" was given the award for Outstanding Achievement in Comedy while "Mad Men" took home the award for Outstanding Achievement in Drama at the 25th Anniversary TCA Awards. Eleven awards, based on the voting of the members of the Television Critics Association, were handed out Saturday.

Along with the top comedy honor, "Big Bang" star Jim Parsons took home the award for Individual Achievement in Comedy. It was the most deserving award of the night as Parsons has quickly become the funniest man in television. Fans of the CBS Monday night comedy know what I am talking about. If you aren't watching the show, you are missing a smart and very funny comedy.

Parsons said before the awards that all of the attention the show is getting seems a little surreal. He was also quick to say that while he is honored to get individual attention, it is the entire cast that makes the show work. He's right. But, Parson is a major part of that group success.

The annual summer Television Critics Association summer meetings are currently being held in Pasadena. This is a chance for television writers from across the United States and Canada to see new shows for the networks and cable. It is also the chance to talk with the stars of those shows.

Most of the time the process works like an interview assembly line. A network or cable channel is given a specific amount of time to show off its programs. Interviews are done and then the next show comes along. It is the best way to get a lot of stories. But, there is very little time to do anything but get to the heart of the story.

This tour is stacking up to be a little different. I actually had time to sit with David Tennant, best known for his starring role in the BBC America series "Dr. Who." Tennant is the 10th actor to play The Doctor in the long-running sci-fi series. But, he is about to leave the role. There is one more movie and a two-part episode to be broadcast before his run ends.

Today my friend Mike Osegueda turns 30.

To celebrate, fellow blogger Brodiemash and I present to him, and to you, his adoring public, a short film featuring just a few of the highlights from Mike's first 29 years.

It's Mike Oz: Sweded.

Happy Birthday, sir, from all of your friends at the Beehive, and here's to another thirty years, plus -- I don't know -- like, thirty more on top of that.
