Beehive Obsessions: Volume 8

You know how it is when you find something you love and instantly you want everyone you know to love it, too? Here is a list of things the Beehive is into at this very moment. We invite you to share your obsession in the comments.

Kathy: I'm obsessed with Cassandra Clare's "The Mortal Instruments" trilogy. I was just half way through the second book last weekend, but I had to go out and buy the third book. I'm just a couple chapters into book 3 (but I think lounging around the pool with this book and a cocktail are in the plans this weekend). The series is reminiscent of Joss Wedon's demon world in "Buffy The Vampire Slayer" (though not as witty). I've been good so far about avoiding spoilers, but my will power is slipping.

Mike Oz: Right now I'm lovin' "Boom Blox: Bash Party" for the Wii. The past two weekends we've had people over and ended up playing this game. It's a cool block and puzzle game, put together by EA and Steven Spielberg and it's great game for gatherings. Sometimes it's like Jenga, sometimes it's like "Duck Hunt" and sometimes you gotta get your Tim Lincecum on. Be careful, though, not only is it addicting, but there's a good chance that you'll be sore the next day from hurling bowling balls.

Joan: I'm obsessed with a long European vacation. More of my friends are moving to Europe, and I have standing invitations to crash with them in the U.K., Spain, France and Germany. My husband and I hope to fit all of these countries into one trip. If you know of a web site with cheap international flights, tell me in the comments!

Heather: I'm obsessed with fruit. Nothing fancy (I have a very unsophisticated palate), just simple plums, watermelon, raspberries, blackberries ... I love it all and can't get enough. I'm also obsessed with buying $15 dresses at Old Navy. They're light, short, easy to pull on and off, and can be worn anywhere. Perfect for someone like me who doesn't like to spend more than ten minutes getting ready to go.

Donald: I have this little tradition with the Tony Awards ceremony. I buy an original-cast recording from one of the nominated shows and give it a try. My pick this year: "Next to Normal," a very unlikely musical about a mentally ill woman who winds up undergoing electric shock therapy and temporarily loses her memory. (Alice Ripley won a Tony for best actress in a musical.) Now I have to admit to a prior history with this show. I saw it last year in New York when it was Off-Broadway and loved it. I can tell from the cast recording that a lot of changes were made when the play moved to Broadway, and those changes are for the better. (Most had to do with removing some of the comic elements from the storyline and beefing up the emotional, tender side of the show.) Unfortunately, "Next to Normal" is not the kind of show that comes across that well on television, and I've talked to some people who in fact were turned off by the Tony live performance. But I can tell you that it's a great cast recording and highly addictive. I love the songs "I'm Alive" and "I Am the One." I've been listening to the show on my iPod almost non-stop the past week.

Your turn. What's got you obsessed?

I am currently obssessed with platform shoes.
A girl can't get enough.
And ponytails. Because with this heat, no one likes a thick mane suffocating your neck!

BluRay movies. Do I need to own "Enter The Dragon" in high def? Yes please!

...in a bit behind the curve on this one:

the 'Yeah Yeah Yeahs'
-(albums I listen to the most 'Show Your Bones,' 'Fever to Tell,' and 'It's Blitz' (newest)
-Probably one of the best produced bands I've heard in a dogs age, and the musicianship is phenomenal.
I mean, drumwork, vocals, guitar/synths --all just spot on,
(it's exhilirating to hear musicians that really have studied, (they've all come through jazz,) and believe in putting out a brutally effective tight professional product, (both live and in the studio.)

soon? whole lotta Algebra, (I need to pull, like two levels by Aug/Sept. (less than thrilled there.)

(Trying) to chill and stay away from the (always) shiney object of Behavioral Sciences,
-think I'm, instead, going to hang out and really get into Lymph/Immuno-Defence/Circulatory systems.
I'm also into genetic encoding, protein-strands, and how that set folks up for everything from allergies, to virus', to cancers.
(It's like we all have these potential pieces of things that one day link and line up and then 'bingo, -houston we have a problem.')

Kathy and Donald you too have got me pegged. I'm currently getting back into the second Mortal Instruments book after my Wife went out and bought the third. And "Next To Normal" has been getting a lot of air time on the ol' iPhone closely followed by "In the Heights" and "[title of show]". Oh Yeah did I mention SIMS 3!!!

I'm mostly obsessed with my iPhone right now and the almost unbearable anticipation of getting to upgrade to the 32gb one!

Since I'm pretty much OCD about everything, top 5 would be:
1: finding a place that consistently serves the perfect Mtn Dew fountain mix
2: chips and salsa
3: so you think you can dance
4: getting a tan and getting bathing suit ready
5: deciding what type of party to plan for my upcoming bday - or is it too much work and I should do nothing? I can't decide!

I'm definitely excited about Wimbledon, though it's sad to hear that Rafael Nadal won't be defending his title.

I'm currently obsessed with:
my vegitable garden
our new puppy
Jillian Michaels work outs
packing as much nutritional punch into homemade smoothies as I can

(Claire)
-congrats on the new pooch.

re: Jillian Michaels...
not for nothin'
-but the first time I saw the cover of one of her vids? I thought Steven Tyler doing something under contract for CRUNCH...
(please know when to say when in this situation.)

Thank you. He's a little rescue guy and has infiltrated our hearts ( lives, cupboards, yard, laundry). Of course like any proud parent I think he's BRILLIANT.

I am being very good with the work outs... modify when need be, but the movements are simple and strong ( gives me more control than some of the dance videos that just make me feel like I switched shoes with Shrek).

My wife and I have just become obsessed with the HBO series True Blood. It's awesome and Anna Paquin is HOT! We have also been watchin Degrassi a lot lately.

I have also developed and obsession over the past few days with steak sandwiches. I don't know what's wrong with me. I think about them all the time. I want one now!

Not sure if I'm obsessed with anything, but I'm spending time promoting this summer's shows for my band,
(Saturday at Tokyo Garden y'all:
Trike Shop/Panduhs/It'sAnIcicle),

working on setting up a nice California Circuit for an independant band,

taking care of our newest bassett hound who's having 'shifting limb lameness'--doc says: 'growing pains'--he's huge,

and re-reading Virginia Woolf's "To the Lighthouse" for the third time and getting all kindsa new stuff out of it.

THAT AND,
finally got Hammer Studio's
"Legend of the 7 Golden Vampires"
---part Kung Fu movie, part vampire movie,
all schlock....unless you like the stuff, and I do!

Hey Kurt, great to know there's another "Next to Normal" fan out there. I can't get "I'm Alive" out of my head.

@AnthonyM: I'm just starting the first season of True Blood. Only watched episode 1. And, since I have read the book, I'm not so in love with it ... mainly because there isn't a lot of mystery left for me.

Donald-
Yeah "Next to Normal" is definitely a current obsession of mine. Although I also recently purchased the independent movie "Were the World Mine" and the musical "Passing Strange." And I recently saw a showing of "Every Little Step" the "A Chorus Line" movie. I never got around to listening to "PS" when it was a Tony nom, but I thought I'd give it a shot now, and I really like it. And I've been obsessed with "WTWM" since the soundtrack came out and was talked about last year, and now having the movie makes me like it even more, cause it's very well done. And as for "ELS." Words cannot describe how phenomenal this film is, and how everyone needs to see it. Next up "Nine" the movie (not Tim Burton, but Rob Marshall). It looks incredible! I mean, just look at the all-star line-up cast. I really can't wait for that.

Hi Jeremy, thanks for the tip on "Were the World Mine." I'll be sure to check it out. Re "Passing Strange": I got to see that on Broadway, too, and really liked it. You reminded that I need to check out that cast recording, too.

Lately its been:
So You Think You Can Dance
Online Shopping (just ordered a Juicy purse and I'm super super excited about it)
$10 dvd's at Target
For Audrey nail polish by china glaze
Sleeping in
New show, Nurse Jackie
Tutti Fruti
Cupcakes
The fact that my nails look like Rainbow Fish, from the children's book
Ryan Reynolds.

Current obsessions:
• The essay collection Day of Mourning, Day of Shame by the late Roger Tatarian, longtime journalist, educator, and former Fresno Bee columnist;
• The free-jazz shred metal of local band Trumpet Solo;
• The turkey kabob at Uncle Harry's Armenian restaurant in Reedley.

Uncle Harry's rules!
If you're around and ever want to try anything else, El Monte's just down the way has a killer brown bag lunch special menu. Lunch, with a beverage for less than $6.00 ( chips and salsa included).
