Saturday night at the Fall Wine Cornucopia Art Competition at the Fresno Metropolitan Museum the poster art was chosen for the Oct. 25 Fall Wine Cornucopia, the annual wine festival at Chukchansi Park.

Eighteen pieces of art were entered into Saturday's competition, where local artists were asked to create works around two themes: the cornucopia and "A Sip of the San Joaquin."

The winning artist was Andrea Cooper, the Bee's former art director. A big Beehive shout out to Andi for her beautiful watercolor.

It will be interesting to see how the wine association turns the art into a poster to market the event.

If you're one of the all-ages rocker types, the place to be tonight is the Chinatown Youth Center where the Emarosa-led Artery Foundation Across the Nation tour makes a stop. Cool monster flier, guys.

The California State University Summer Arts festival likes to bring out one of its big guns for the opening night performance, and Sunday night's kick-off concert featuring the returning Joe Goode Performance Group managed to accomplish that goal in more ways than one. The group's first selection, the 1996 "Maverick Strain," was a cheeky riff on the lore of the American cowboy and this country's obsession with guns.

Goode himself came out before the dance started to sing to the audience a "cowboy song," and what a sight he was with his wildly fringed Western shirt. (Later in the piece he would don a pair of woolly chaps festooned with gaudy tassels in a look that suggested the stripping scene from "Gypsy" crossed with "The Magnificent Seven.") After showing off his flamboyant costume, Goode noted that a look such as his, which could seem so ironic in San Francisco, could be interpreted differently here in the hinterlands of Fresno, where the artsy/kitschy myth of the cowboy intertwines with a real-life working industry. I'd go as far as to say that the dance works even better in a place like Fresno.

While grabbing some grub at Chris Meat Market the other day, I saw this ad outside (in plain sight) -- hoping, apparently, that people want to grab on some other stuff.

As far as I can tell, this is an ad for a prostitute who charges $25 per hour (but will also work for hamburgers). Should you be interested, you'd also need to pay for a hotel. Maybe it's just me, but the hamburger part makes it seem a little suspect. What do you think? And more importantly, who's going to call and report back?

And if, after all that, you're asking, "Wait, I thought it was April Meat Market," then consider yourself officially on notice that the name is once again Chris Meat Market. Here's a photo to prove it.

Here's a recap of a weekend dripping with drama. Tell us about your weekend adventures in the comments.

FRIDAY
I took on a last-minute DJ gig at Palomino's, which wouldn't have been all that noteworthy except the owner of Red Zone Sports Grill showed up to speak with me during my set. He was calm and apologetic, saying he had never actually heard the now-controversial ad until things erupted last week. Overall, there wasn't as much tension as you'd expect -- except for when his nephew came and told me I should do my "research" because Red Zone has two gay employees. I shut that down like Liz Lemon.

SATURDAY
The big news on Saturday was that local businessman Kirk Vartanian (aka the guy who opened The Edge) had been arrested on Friday night. Vartanian (pictured above) even got a special Saturday press conference from Fresno PD to talk about the allegations of assault and felony domestic violence.

The Bee's Tim Sheehan wrote a pretty thorough story on the arrest. Vartanian reached out to ABC-30 from jail to tell his side of the story, which included this choice quote: "I'm trying to help the City of Fresno. If I am going to keep getting negative things happening to me, I am not going to help Granite Park."
