UPDATE: Guess who else wants to be part of the braless club now? Answer after the jump.

Original post 6/18: I don't like what I'm seeing lately on gossip sites. Actually, I rarely like what I see on gossip sites, but today I'm specifically referring to women, in public, sans undergarments.

This isn't a reference to the Panty Drought of 2007. I'm talking about the women who recently have been hanging out, pun intended, without their bras. It's obviously a quick way to garner attention, and preferable to wearing a giant sandwich board reading "Hey, looky here: I'm SEXY," but it's already gotten old.

Heather Graham began the trend, going braless and wearing a clingy dress at last week's London premiere of "The Hangover." She of course got tons of attention for it, which Heather Graham sort of needs, so okay. Understood. Forgiven. Whatever.

But you know who doesn't need to use her nipples to get attention? Megan Fox, who pulled the same move at the German premiere for "Transformers 2" days later:

A "new" play by Mark Twain is an event no matter the century. That "Is He Dead?" took so long to finally come to theatrical life -- it opened on Broadway in 2007 and reached Fresno this weekend in the form of a Good Company Players production through Aug. 9 at the 2nd Space Theatre -- might be considered by some as an ominous sign. How good could it be if it sat on a shelf all these years?

I prefer to think, however, that Twain's silly offering was just waiting for a good script doctor and a talented cast. And that's what it got from playwright David Ives, credited with adapting the script, who I'm guessing did a lot to add much of the airy lift to this comic souffle by getting us past Twain's musty set-up, and the GCP comedy team. If cornball jokes about Impressionism and "oui-oui" French humor tickles your funny bone, there's a lot to laugh at (or at least groan at) in this wacky production. Sure, Twain is no Oscar Wilde, and at times the play comes across as more generic than inspired -- complete with the actors making eye-rolling asides at the audience -- but the brisk performances save the night.

Peter Allwine does the cross-dressing honors as the impoverished (and today quite famous) painter Jean-Francois Millet, whom Twain never met. The hapless Millet, who leads a merry band of bohemian friends in happy pursuit of the starving-artist lifestyle, is unable to sell any of the gorgeous paintings he makes of French peasants. To add insult to his garret woes, a slimy art dealer, Bastien (plumbed to infectious comic depths by a wonderfully arch Patrick Allan Tromborg), plans to foreclose not only on him but also his girlfriend's father.

The cool concerts keep up on coming at Table Mountain Casino.

Word comes today the casino has secured a date with "American Idol" Season 7 winner David Cook. Cook will perform Nov. 12.

Tickets cost $25-$45 and are slated to go on sale Oct. 5.

I'm no "Idol" fan, but Cook isn't typical casino fare -- much like the John Legend show Table Mountain announced recently and the Counting Crows show coming up next month.

Here's the current Table Mountain concert schedule:

Back in April I wrote about L.A.-based filmmaker Stephen Payne who was working on "Fresno," a documentary about how the foreclosure crisis has created opportunity for pool skaters here.

As the film gets closer to its premiere -- July 13 at Tower Theatre -- Payne and musician Jen Beast teamed for a "Fresno" song and music video. Here it is:

Portland band Y La Bamba is playing tonight at Aqua Shi. They've got a trippy sound -- old Mexican folk meets indie rock. On recordings, the band's music sounds as if it is playing off in the distance on an old record player. Check out this free MP3 called "Fasting in San Francisco" to hear what I mean.

I would soooo not be able to survive junior high school in this day and age.

I recall the story of Alice as being a quirky children's tale about a young girl who falls asleep and dreams of a place where rabbits tell time, caterpillars smoke weed hookah pipes, and a lot of stock is placed in one's ability to memorize poems.

Tim Burton clearly got a lot more out of it. Images from his film adaptation of Lewis Carroll's Alice's Adventures in Wonderland have made their way to the web, and unlike Disney's first delightful adaptation that gave birth to two delightful rides at Disneyland featuring delightful singing flowers and whimsical spinning teacups, this one features what might be a killer clown and Anne Hathaway. (Sorry, that was redundant.)

It was a pretty huge weekend around Fresno -- here are some updates. Where did your weekend adventures take ya? Tell us in the comments.

FRIDAY

  • It took a last-minute, one-night-only liquor license and round-the-clock work, but The Edge pulled everything together in order to open Friday night as promised. I wasn't there, but all reports say there was a good crowd. Kim Kardashian has pics on her blog and local photog Casper Munoz has loads on his site like the one above. Who was there? Was it worth what you paid?

  • On another Edge note: Owner Kirk Vartanian said on Friday that the club would be closed for two more weeks to finish the remodeling. Then on Saturday, he changed course and said it would be open Thurs-Sat as an 18-and-over, no-booze spot until the remodeling is done and the club gets its permanent liquor license. (Side note: Props to ABC30 for the funniest thing I saw this weekend).
