My column today talks about proposed regulations that would affect Fresno's nightlife.

Read my column here, and check out the draft ordinance here.

I'm curious to know your take on the city's plan. Like I say in the column, I bet we would end up with more bars because they could open in zones that are currently off limits.

For me, the big question is about dancing. I think we could have fewer places to dance, at least in the short term. It would take time for restaurants to get the conditional-use permits needed for nightclub status.

But Arnoldo Rodriguez has a different take. Since more businesses would be able to stay open later under the new rules, he thinks more of them would become nightclubs.

I should note here that business owners' reactions have been mixed. On one hand, the new rules would be a lot simpler than the old ones. That means less red tape to go through when opening a business.

But the streamlined rules also mean that the city would have an easier time shutting down businesses that don't comply.

What do you think? As always, tell us in the comments.

Spinners Records, the Tower District's neighborhood record shop, is celebrating 20 years with a party Wednesday night at Audie's Olympic. Yep, while Wherehouse, Tower Records and others have trotted off to the Big Music Store in the Sky, Spinners is still selling vinyl on Olive Avenue.

That's reason to celebrate, ain't it? For the party, there will be live performances by local bands Docabilly, Poplord and Speedogeezer. And, get this, it's totally free.

There's a Michael Jackson tribute night scheduled at Aldo's, compete with MJ dance contest and a request to dress like the King of Pop.

Now here's the question: How long before MJ tributes are played out? I was kinda thinking if you didn't do it last weekend, then there's no reason. I have a feeling, though, we're going to be seeing these for a few weeks to come.

On a related note, the Opinion Talk says: "Public viewing of Michael Jackson's body? This is too much."

How flowery do I want to get in describing the beautiful sounds of the flute-guitar duo AlmaNova? Let's just pull out the stops. As I sat there Monday in Fresno State's Concert Hall listening to the duo's CSU Summer Arts performance, I kept thinking of two swallows hurling through the sky -- diving, soaring, swooping, with first one and then the other taking the lead, the two of them sometimes exploding with energy but more often quietly flitting here and there in a graceful, intuitively choreographed display of seamless connection.

Wow.

The husband-wife duo of Almer Imamovic and Jessica Pierce, who are both instructors in the Summer Arts flute and guitar workshop, have a stage relationship that is thrilling to watch. Imamovic strums his guitar so smoothly at times it's as if he's caressing a stone, and Pierce's flute lyrically fills the hall with a gentle, effortless swell. Watching Imamovic watch his wife as they play is particularly sweet. As he stands there -- he uses a guitar strap -- as he plays, periodically turning to gaze at her, his shoulders pulse with the beat almost as if they're dancing.

transformers 2.JPG

Autobots vs. Decepticons isn't the only battle surrounding "Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen." The movie, currently No. 1, in the country after making more than $200 million since its opening, has hatched a war between critics and moviegoers.

There's a nice story in today's paper that talks about it in detail, but basically: The movie has nearly been panned universally by critics, while ticket-buyers are loving it. It could be the worst reviewed movie to ever crack the $400-million mark.

The new "Transformers" only has a 20% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, just 3% better than "Year One" and 7% worse than "Dance Flick." Our own Rick Bentley gave "Revenge of the Fallen" a D+ in his review. But you only need to look to the comments of his review to see the divide: The fanboys are telling him to quit his job and calling him "pretty much the dumbest person on the planet."

Wonder what they'd say to this review from MovieWeb.com? "This celluloid abortion should be buried in a vault and shown to film students as an example of big Hollywood at its worst."

The question seems to be: Are movie critics out of touch with what moviegoers like? Or do people just like bad movies?

Saturday night at the Fall Wine Cornucopia Art Competition at the Fresno Metropolitan Museum the poster art was chosen for the Oct. 25 Fall Wine Cornucopia, the annual wine festival at Chukchansi Park.

Eighteen pieces of art were entered into Saturday's competition, where local artists were asked to create works around two themes: the cornucopia and "A Sip of the San Joaquin."

The winning artist was Andrea Cooper, the Bee's former art director. A big Beehive shout out to Andi for her beautiful watercolor.

It will be interesting to see how the wine association turns the art into a poster to market the event.

goodecowboy.jpg

The California State University Summer Arts festival likes to bring out one of its big guns for the opening night performance, and Sunday night's kick-off concert featuring the returning Joe Goode Performance Group managed to accomplish that goal in more ways than one. The group's first selection, the 1996 "Maverick Strain," was a cheeky riff on the lore of the American cowboy and this country's obsession with guns.

Goode himself came out before the dance started to sing to the audience a "cowboy song," and what a sight he was with his wildly fringed Western shirt. (Later in the piece he would don a pair of woolly chaps festooned with gaudy tassels in a look that suggested the stripping scene from "Gypsy" crossed with "The Magnificent Seven.") After showing off his flamboyant costume, Goode noted that a look such as his, which could seem so ironic in San Francisco, could be interpreted differently here in the hinterlands of Fresno, where the artsy/kitschy myth of the cowboy intertwines with a real-life working industry. I'd go as far as to say that the dance works even better in a place like Fresno.

While grabbing some grub at Chris Meat Market the other day, I saw this ad outside (in plain sight) -- hoping, apparently, that people want to grab on some other stuff.

As far as I can tell, this is an ad for a prostitute who charges $25 per hour (but will also work for hamburgers). Should you be interested, you'd also need to pay for a hotel. Maybe it's just me, but the hamburger part makes it seem a little suspect. What do you think? And more importantly, who's going to call and report back?

And if, after all that, you're asking, "Wait, I thought it was April Meat Market," then consider yourself officially on notice that the name is once again Chris Meat Market. Here's a photo to prove it.

Here's a recap of a weekend dripping with drama. Tell us about your weekend adventures in the comments.

FRIDAY
I took on a last-minute DJ gig at Palomino's, which wouldn't have been all that noteworthy except the owner of Red Zone Sports Grill showed up to speak with me during my set. He was calm and apologetic, saying he had never actually heard the now-controversial ad until things erupted last week. Overall, there wasn't as much tension as you'd expect -- except for when his nephew came and told me I should do my "research" because Red Zone has two gay employees. I shut that down like Liz Lemon.

SATURDAY
The big news on Saturday was that local businessman Kirk Vartanian (aka the guy who opened The Edge) had been arrested on Friday night. Vartanian (pictured above) even got a special Saturday press conference from Fresno PD to talk about the allegations of assault and felony domestic violence.

The Bee's Tim Sheehan wrote a pretty thorough story on the arrest. Vartanian reached out to ABC-30 from jail to tell his side of the story, which included this choice quote: "I'm trying to help the City of Fresno. If I am going to keep getting negative things happening to me, I am not going to help Granite Park."

TAMPA -- Billy Mays, the TV pitchman whose trademark voice helped sell everything from cleaning supplies to baking soda, was found dead this morning by his wife at his Tampa home. No cause of death has been reported and no foul play is suspected, according to Tampa police.

Mays, 50, was pronounced dead at 7:45 a.m. at 2853 Bowen Daniel Dr., #1201. His wife, Deborah Mays, found him unresponsive this morning. The Medical Examiner's Office will complete Mays' autopsy by tomorrow afternoon.

I'm always telling people in Fresno they absolutely HAVE to go to at least one event in the California State University Summer Arts Festival, which on Sunday is starting its 11th year at Fresno State. Maybe this is your year! You can't plead that you're "too busy that night," because there are 40 public events that unfold almost daily for an entire month. Some are full-fledged concerts/performances, such as the festival's kick-off program 7 p.m. Sunday of the Joe Goode Performance Group, pictured above, which I hear is already a very tough ticket to get. Others are smaller-scale demonstrations or lectures. And the student culminations, which come at the conclusion of both of the festival's two-week sessions, are a great way to experience the festival and save money -- because they're free.

My cover story in Sunday's upcoming issue of Spotlight is about Summer Arts and includes some of the festival's highlights along with an interview with director Jim Spalding. We can't possibly fit the entire performance calendar into one issue of the newspaper, however. I plan to have a daily Summer Arts Bulletin Board rolling post on the Beehive with highlights for the day, news tidbits about the festival and a chance for readers to offer comments and reviews.

Thomas Friedman drives some people crazy because he coins vivid images to explain complex issues. I love it. In the world at large, there's no dearth of obtuse and confusing explanations of how stuff works. Friedman cuts through that verbiage with strong, clear language.

That's one of the reasons that his talk on Thursday night at the Warnors Theater -- a fundraising lecture for science programs at the Fresno Metropolitan Museum -- was so effective.

One of the phrases that Friedman coined is what he calls an "Americon." That's a unit of measurement, he says, that is the equivalent of 300 million Americans living like, well, Americans -- consuming lots of energy, living in big houses, driving big cars. The problem is that the world has too many "Americons." Decades ago, there used to be approximately two: the U.S. itself, plus Western Europe and Japan. Today there are NINE "Americons" -- or nine times 300 million people -- living in the world, including Russia, China and India. Sure, a major problem in the world is overpopulation. But to be crass about it, an even bigger problem is that so many more people are expecting an American standard of living.

BIG SHOW: The publicity machine for Drum Corps International doesn't really rev up for local newspapers, so I learned late about tonight's 2009 Drum Corps International Tour stop at Buchanan High School Stadium. But it sounds like a top-notch event. Such world-class groups as the Blue Devils from Concord, the Bluecoats from Canton, Ohio, the Blue Knights from Denver and the Santa Clara Vanguard will participate. The competition starts at 7 p.m.

I caught a version of this tour a couple of years ago when it came to Clovis and blogged about it on the Beehive. It's a really good show.

SHAKESPEARE IN THE PARK: I can't make the Drum Corps show tonight, however, because I'll be at "As You Like It," the first offering in the summer season of Woodward Shakespeare Festival. Director Michael Peterson is setting this "pastoral comedy" in the Summer of Love at the beach. You can read my Bee interview with him here.

A JUMP ON THE FOURTH: If you're in a patriotic mood, don't miss the Big Red, White & Blue Celebration 5 p.m. Saturday at the First Congregational Church. (It's known as "The Big Red Church," hence the name of the event.) Pre-concert festivities include a barbecue, silent auction, concert and ice cream social. On the program are patriotic songs and marches performed by the Chancel Choir of First Congregational, the Fresno Gay Men's Chorus and Scott Horton on the Casavant Pipe Organ.

RE: the regrettable case of amnesia that appears to have struck someone at your station

Hey, Channel 30 folks, we're quite concerned over here on E Street about the neurological condition of your fine correspondent DeShaunta Bullock, who managed to file an entire report about the Red Zone Sports Grill offensive-gay-comment controversy without once mentioning the Beehive or Mike Oz, who was the guy who started the whole thing.

Just to be clear here: Mike heard the ad on the radio. It ticked him off. He wrote a blog post. Readers started commenting. More readers commented. A groundswell of opposition arose. A local group, SAFE (Straight Advocates for Equality), got in on the act. Within a day, the restaurant was revising the ad and posting an apology on its Web site.

Curiously, however, the Channel 30 report -- which ran SECOND on the 6 p.m. Thursday newscast, right after Michael Jackson, and included one of those exciting "live from the newsroom!" intros -- didn't mention the Beehive at all!

This is a BIG weekend for quilting fans. The Heart Of California Quilters' Guild is sponsoring its biannual quilt show, "A Harvest of Quilts," Saturday and Sunday in Madera. I have an interview with the Guild's Virginia Whistler in the Friday 7 section. Here's an extended version:

Question: What are the largest quilts that are on display?

Answer: There will be king-size quilts up to 116" by 116", down to miniature quilts that could measure less that 20" by 20".

How many? What are some of the varieties that people can see?

There will be 125 quilts on display, along with an additional 25 quilts made by our featured quilter. Her quilts will be displayed on our stage. Also, many of our vendors will have quilts in their booths for display. Many times, you can buy patterns from these venders to make the individual quilts that you have seen. There will be a large variety of quilts. Many traditional quilts have been made, along with more contemporary quilts. There will be landscapes quilts, challenge quilts, baby quilts, and holiday quilts.

Fresno's Jason Glover once again found himself in the Bottom 3 on "So You Think You Can Dance," which marks the second week in a row he's had to "dance for his life" on Thursday's live results show. Unlike last week, however, when his solo dance wowed the judges, he got a much more tentative vote of approval from them. He survived, but as he heads into next week's Top 14 show, he's going to have to up his game to stay in the competition.

The two dancers sent home were Jonathan Platero, whose dismal hip-hop routine cemented his fate; and Asuka Kondon, who didn't do well on her solo performance.

For the guys, joining Jonathan and Jason in the Bottom 3 was Vitolio Jeune. For the gals, joining Asuka were Caitlin Kinney (Jason's partner) and Karla Garcia. (Caitlin got the best reviews from the judges.)

When it came to announcing the results, judge Nigel Lythgoe had Jason step forward last. Here's what Nigel told him:

Last week, you really danced well. Your solo this week was full of desperation ... You looked like you were going to deliver seven pirouettes and did one. You have to be fully aware that when you dance for your life in this competition that is what you are doing. That was not strong enough to get you through ... (long pause) ... had you been against better boys. It did tonight. You can sit down."

Poor Jason looked pretty bleak up there as Nigel spoke, and, for a moment, I thought he might break into tears. But he managed to keep himself together.

After the jump: a clip of Caitlin and Jason's solo performances from the night.

Although he'd essentially become a walking punchline in recent years, there was a time when everyone loved Michael Jackson. Everyone.

If you were a kid in the 80s, you worshiped the guy, and no matter what scandalous stories came out in later years, or how much his appearance changed, it most likely didn't diminish your love for his early music.

For example, I go stupid whenever I hear "Billie Jean" to this day. I stop whatever it is I am doing, and start singing and jerking around (normal people call it "dancing," but that doesn't accurately describe my awkward moves) until the song is over. Every time.

So sound off. In your opinion, what song/s represent the best of MJ?

Individuals can visit www.legacy.com to find the Guest Book and share their thoughts and express their condolences. Jackson's Guest Book will remain on the site indefinitely. UPDATE 6/26: Although the autopsy has yet to be performed, and results won't be ready for weeks, the rumor is that Jackson was a drug addict, and that a fatal dose of Demoral Demerol caused the cardiac arrest. Still just a rumor, though, so take it with a grain of salt ...

And speaking of the kids, People has some ideas on who will be their new guardian.

UPDATE: According to TMZ, Michael Jackson, 50, has died. He is survived by his three kids: Michael Joseph Jackson, Jr., Paris Michael Katherine Jackson and Prince Michael Jackson II.

Original Post: From KTLA News:

LOS ANGELES -- Pop star Michael Jackson has been taken to UCLA Medical Center by ambulance suffering from cardiac arrest, fire officials confirm.

Los Angeles Fire Department Captain Steve Ruda said paramedics responded to a 911 call at Jackson's home around 12:26 p.m. He was not breathing when they arrived. The paramedics performed CPR and took him to UCLA Medical Center, Ruda says.

It's unclear what he was being treated for or what his current condition may be.

I'm really diggin' this new local band Strange Vine. It's a duo made up of Toby Cordova and Ian Blesse, playing bluesy/psychedelic rock dripping with older influences.

Sidenote: Blesse is best known for playing in The Same Shape -- and he confirms that the band is broken up. You might remember I brought up that rumor here.

Strange Vine does well at picking up where The Same Shape left off, though. This song "Close Your Eyes" is one of my favorite local songs of the year. In case you haven't heard, "Charlie's Angels" star Farrah Fawcett died today at age 62. She had been battling cancer.

The news brought back memories of my childhood, when I was obsessed with watching "Charlie's Angels" -- before and after Farrah. In fact, my girlfriends and I would even pretend to be the angels, running around solving our own made-up mysteries. Though, I was always cast to fill in as "the blond" -- whether it was Jill Munroe or Kris Munroe (Cheryl Ladd), my favorite Angel was always Kelly Garrett (Jaclyn Smith).

Anyone else have fond memories of Charlie's Angels? I bet a few guys out there remember Farrah's famous poster.

DONALD: Fresno's Jason Glover danced solidly -- but not spectacularly, according to the judges -- in last night's Top 16 competition of "So You Think You Can Dance." I think that what's emerging after three weeks is that Jason is a GREAT dancer and has an infectious stage chemistry when he's performing routines that call for warmth and personality. Where he seems to be falling short, however, is on the acting part of the equation. He's finding it a little difficult to portray characters that are out of his comfort zone -- whether they be a hip hop dude, like he did last week, or last night's Paso Doble number with partner Caitlin Kinney, in which he tried to be all stern and unshaven. (His bare-chested Roman gladiator-style costume was a little over the top; it was like watching a musical version of "Spartacus.") Can you set last night's scene for us, Kathy?

sytycdweek3.jpg

KATHY: Donald, I thought Jason did a pretty good job of portraying strength (I mean, really, with that beautifully chiseled body, he can't look weak). But he seems to have a hard time maintaining the character in his face and holding his posture. Last night's routine, set to the powerful O Fortuna, put the already strong Paso on steroids with big lifts, lots of turns and stomping. It showed, again, Jason's physical strength. But, the dance, along with the intro where the dancers talked about other careers they might be interested in, showed the lack of affection/connection this couple has. I get the feeling Jason isn't too fond of his partner Caitlin. They are both gorgeous people, who don't seem too shy, so they really need to sexy it up. Or, at least, ACT more like they like each other. The lack of chemistry is going to kill them if they make it past this week, especially when you look at the spark between competing couples Vitolio Jeune and Asuka Kondoh (who made people sigh with their genuine affection for each other) and Ade Obayomi and Melissa Sandvig (who are fearless in showing their sex appeal, including with a sizzling rumba last night).

Thomas Friedman is a busy guy, what with writing his New York Times columns (one appears in today's Bee), traveling the world researching major geopolitical issues and producing one best-selling book after another. (His latest is titled "Hot, Flat and Crowded.") But he's finding the time to come to Fresno's Warnors Theater today to give a fundraising lecture for the Fresno Metropolitan Museum. (Tickets are $40, $30 for museum members.) I'm certainly going to be there to listen.

Friedman is a remarkable writer in that he can take complex and murky, often contentious issues and examine them in a way that neither dumbs those issues down nor require you to be an economist or current-affairs expert to understand. In his newest book he discusses global warming, the stunning rise of middle class all over the world and how rapid population growth have converged in a way that could make our planet dangerously unstable.

Tickets are still available by phone (441-1444) or online (fresnomet.org) till 2 p.m., and then at the door after that.

UPDATE: Commenter Ed lets us know that spot has been pulled and will be revised. Read more here.

ORIGINAL POST - 6/24: Not too long ago I was listening to 105.1 The Blaze and heard a commercial for Red Zone Sports Grill, the new-ish sports bar in Northeast Fresno. The commercial was something like, "The Top 10 reasons you should get out of the house and have a beer at Red Zone."

In the beginning, the reasons were predictable and cliché: "Your mother-in-law is in town" -- stuff like that. (Note: I only heard it once, so I don't have exact quotes).

Halfway through came this bomb: "You just found out your son is gay." I did a double-take. Really? They're putting that in a commercial? Just to clarify: The tone was not celebratory. I'm not easily offended, but right away I was like, "Well, I don't think I'll be spending any money there."

I thought about this issue more and started to ponder a few questions: Should stuff like this -- even if the place says it's just a joke -- determine where we spend our money? What about political statements? And what if you like the place? Like really like it? Where do you draw the line?

LOS ANGELES -- "If Eddie Murphy's career were an injured horse, it would be shot and the carcass buried in the remotest part of the desert to ensure no one ever stumbled upon it."
That harsh sentence, written on June 12 by Rick Bentley in The Fresno Bee in California, is as good an example as any of the prevailing sentiment about Mr. Murphy these days. With two big flops in a row ("Imagine That" and "Meet Dave"), another risky project on the way ("A Thousand Words") and a diva reputation, people seem to be confused. Why does Hollywood keep hiring this man?

Memo to Rick: I wouldn't accept any invitations to Murphy's secluded mountain cabin if I were you.

Mega 97.9 is doing a taco tour of sorts -- hitting up various taco spots on Wednesdays and hooking up 97-cent tacos. I'm not sure if there's a "winner" out of all of this -- or if we're all winners for getting cheap tacos. Either way, I approve of this.

Tonight, the Taco Challenge stops at Taqueria Superior near Manchester Mall. (Any good, anybody know?). The challenge continues in coming weeks with these stops:

We don't usually follow the foibles of national politicians on the Beehive, but this story just turned officially bizarre. For days, the media has been speculating about the whereabouts of South Carolina governor Mark Sanford. The explanation from his staff was that he was hiding out somewhere on the Appalachia Trail. Now it turns out that he was in Argentina having an affair with a woman he met via email correspondence. The New York Times reports:

Governor Sanford, 49, admitted that he had been in Buenos Aires since Thursday, not hiking on the Appalachian Trail as his staff had told reporters. In revealing an affair that had gone on for about a year -- and which he said he had disclosed to his wife, Jenny, five months ago -- he said: "This was selfishness on my part."

I think that Sanford may have officially knocked John and Kate off the top of the gossip A-list.

My colleague Heather adds: "That's a loooong way to go for a booty call."

There will be a major change in the nominations for "The 82nd Academy Awards." The number of movies in the running for Best Picture will increase from five to 10. The announcement of the change was made this morning by Academy Motion Picture Arts and Sciences President Sid Ganis.

The Academy has had five nominees since 1944. Before that, there were various numbers of nominees. For nine years, until the 16th awards, there were 10 nominees in the category. In 1931 and 1932 there were eight nominees. In 1934 and 1935 there were 12 nominees.

The plus of this change is that movies like "The Dark Knight," a film that deserved a Best Picture nomination last year, won't be left on the sidelines.

The negative is that five nominations created a very select group. The change looks like an effort by the Academy to generate some more interest in the show. In the end, there will still be only one winner. If this work maybe they will keep expanding until junk like "Pink Panther 2" gets consideration.

How this change plays out will be seen when "The 82nd Academy Awards"
are handed out March 7. Nominations will be announced Feb. 2.

Here's a gem of a TV news story from WJW Fox 8 in Cleveland. It's about a woman spotting a black bear in her backyard. The news team went to great lengths to show us the "bear" in question. Enjoy.

It's already been a Worst Flier of the Week contender, but this Summer Madness party tonight at Aldo's keeps racking up Madness points. I think the flier has been posted in about 50 MySpace bulletins in the past 24 hours (a record?). It may also be the longest flier I've ever seen -- so long I have to post it in two pieces here (second is after the jump).

zicam.jpgWhen the U.S. Food and Drug Administration warned us last week to avoid Zicam's nasal products, I sent a quick note to my Zicam-loving friends and forgot about it.

But epi-log, the excellent food blog at epicurious.com, warned of another danger: If Zicam can cause you to lose your sense of smell, it also can diminish your sense of taste.

I should have thought about this before, since the two senses are so closely linked. If you have any Zicam Cold Remedy Nasal Gel or Zicam Cold Remedy Nasal Swabs, toss 'em. Or return them to the company and get a refund.

The fiasco got me to thinking about aromas and flavors I'd hate to live without. One is the short ribs alla Genovese from the "A16: Food + Wine" cookbook. Their intoxicating scent left me ravenous for two-and-a-half hours as they braised in my oven. And they tasted just as good as they smelled.

Can you imagine losing your sense of taste? What flavors and aromas would you hate to lose?

BOOK IT: Some interesting authors are coming through town this week for book signings. New York Times columnist Thomas Friedman, whose newest book is titled "Hot, Flat and Crowded," will appear 5:30 p.m. Thursday at a fundraising lecture for the Fresno Metropolitan Museum at Warnors Theater. The Met's Amanda Allen was reporting on Mindhub this morning that tickets are still available. Friedman will be across the street at the KJWL/KYNO studios for a book signing from 3-5 p.m. prior to the lecture. (I read Friedman's "The World Is Flat" a couple of years ago and recommend it.) Also on the author circuit this week: Mike Farrell, former star of "M*A*S*H" and "Providence," who will sign copies of his book "Of Mule and Man" at 7 p.m. Friday at Barnes & Noble Booksellers, 7849 N. Blackstone Ave.

TV WEIRDNESS: I find this story quite amusing: A TV anchor in LaCrosse, Wis., had been receiving harassing emails for two years, including ones that criticized her hair or reporting. Other emails said that that the anchor's co-host, the weather guy, was better. When police traced the emails it turned out they came from the weather guy's home computer. Now the anchor has a restraining order against her co-host. Talk about a frosty off-camera relationship, with a further cooling trend in sight.

BIGGER THAN EVER: Speaking of TV news, I was reading Beehive colleague Rick Bentley's column about TV ratings and was surprised at how dominant KFSN (Channel 30.1) has become in the local market. At 5 p.m., Channel 30 attracted an average of 82,000 viewers, almost four times second place KSEE (Channel 24.1). Poor KGPE (Channel 47.1) had just 9,000 viewers in that time slot. As someone who works for a monopoly daily newspaper in town, I don't have much room to talk, but is there a danger in having one local station so dominant?

WHERE'S THE POETRY: A Beehive commenter stumbled on an April post I wrote about the demise of the Fresno Poets Association. David W. Clary wrote: "Great. I finally start looking for a poetry group to share my work with, and they disband. Dang it. Anyone know of any other poetry groups in town?"

Remember the story of 18-year old Kimberley Vlaminck, the Belgian girl who went to a tattoo artist for three stars on her face, fell asleep, and woke up with 56 stars instead? Well, she lied.

article-1194910-0566583D000005DC-381_468x343.jpg

In news that surprises absolutely no one, Vlaminck told a Dutch television show: "I asked for 56 stars and initially adored them. But when my father saw them, he was furious. So I said I fell asleep and that the tattoist had made a mistake."

Vlaminck had threatened to sue tattoo artist Rouslan Toumaniantz for the money to pay for removal of the stars. Toumaniantz, who maintained that Vlaminck asked for the 56 stars and was awake throughout, had agreed to pay for half of the removal fee, saying "Kimberley is unhappy and it is not my wish to have an unsatisfied client." He's since retracted the offer, and has now instituted a new policy wherein clients provide written consent before getting inked.

And if there's anyone who's going to learn from his mistakes immediately, it should be Toumaniantz:

gallery_main-0610_heather_graham_braless_00.jpg

Original post 6/18: I don't like what I'm seeing lately on gossip sites. Actually, I rarely like what I see on gossip sites, but today I'm specifically referring to women, in public, sans undergarments.

This isn't a reference to the Panty Drought of 2007. I'm talking about the women who recently have been hanging out, pun intended, without their bras. It's obviously a quick way to garner attention, and preferable to wearing a giant sandwich board reading "Hey, looky here: I'm SEXY," but it's already gotten old.

Heather Graham began the trend, going braless and wearing a clingy dress at last week's London premiere of "The Hangover." She of course got tons of attention for it, which Heather Graham sort of needs, so okay. Understood. Forgiven. Whatever.

But you know who doesn't need to use her nipples to get attention? Megan Fox, who pulled the same move at the German premiere for "Transformers 2" days later:

A "new" play by Mark Twain is an event no matter the century. That "Is He Dead?" took so long to finally come to theatrical life -- it opened on Broadway in 2007 and reached Fresno this weekend in the form of a Good Company Players production through Aug. 9 at the 2nd Space Theatre -- might be considered by some as an ominous sign. How good could it be if it sat on a shelf all these years?

I prefer to think, however, that Twain's silly offering was just waiting for a good script doctor and a talented cast. And that's what it got from playwright David Ives, credited with adapting the script, who I'm guessing did a lot to add much of the airy lift to this comic souffle by getting us past Twain's musty set-up, and the GCP comedy team. If cornball jokes about Impressionism and "oui-oui" French humor tickles your funny bone, there's a lot to laugh at (or at least groan at) in this wacky production. Sure, Twain is no Oscar Wilde, and at times the play comes across as more generic than inspired -- complete with the actors making eye-rolling asides at the audience -- but the brisk performances save the night.

Peter Allwine does the cross-dressing honors as the impoverished (and today quite famous) painter Jean-Francois Millet, whom Twain never met. The hapless Millet, who leads a merry band of bohemian friends in happy pursuit of the starving-artist lifestyle, is unable to sell any of the gorgeous paintings he makes of French peasants. To add insult to his garret woes, a slimy art dealer, Bastien (plumbed to infectious comic depths by a wonderfully arch Patrick Allan Tromborg), plans to foreclose not only on him but also his girlfriend's father.

I recall the story of Alice as being a quirky children's tale about a young girl who falls asleep and dreams of a place where rabbits tell time, caterpillars smoke weed hookah pipes, and a lot of stock is placed in one's ability to memorize poems.

Tim Burton clearly got a lot more out of it. Images from his film adaptation of Lewis Carroll's Alice's Adventures in Wonderland have made their way to the web, and unlike Disney's first delightful adaptation that gave birth to two delightful rides at Disneyland featuring delightful singing flowers and whimsical spinning teacups, this one features what might be a killer clown and Anne Hathaway. It was a pretty huge weekend around Fresno -- here are some updates. Where did your weekend adventures take ya? Tell us in the comments.

FRIDAY

  • It took a last-minute, one-night-only liquor license and round-the-clock work, but The Edge pulled everything together in order to open Friday night as promised. I wasn't there, but all reports say there was a good crowd. Kim Kardashian has pics on her blog and local photog Casper Munoz has loads on his site like the one above. Who was there? Was it worth what you paid?

  • On another Edge note: Owner Kirk Vartanian said on Friday that the club would be closed for two more weeks to finish the remodeling. Then on Saturday, he changed course and said it would be open Thurs-Sat as an 18-and-over, no-booze spot until the remodeling is done and the club gets its permanent liquor license. (Side note: Props to ABC30 for the funniest thing I saw this weekend).

Jane Delaney's show at Spectrum Art Gallery is called "Traces," and I love the title. Delaney is fascinated by the passage of time and what it does to human constructs, whether they be old buildings, vehicles or road signs. She has an acute sensitivity to the way things age, from the streaks of rust on a piece of playground equipment to the slow rot of an abandoned wooden porch. Whereas most of us likely absorb such images with boredom or even irritation -- "look at that rundown house," we might sniff -- I suspect that Delaney is just a little bit awe-struck at the inexorable way in which nature eventually breaks down everything that humans create. It might take hundreds of years, or thousands, or perhaps even a million, for the most durable items created by humanity to fade away, but in the end, all will succumb to nature.

There's a special event this weekend for those who might want to check out Delaney's show: The artist will be on hand for a discussion 3-4 p.m. Saturday.

ryanscott.JPGOh, Ryan Scott. Methinks you should hit a few tailgate parties before telling local sports fans what to cook.

Fans of the Bravo series Top Chef will remember him from season four. Scott, a graduate of Los Banos High School, was booted off the show for missing the mark at a Chicago Bears tailgate party.

On her blog, Top Chef judge Gail Simmons told us why he went home: "Ryan's Bread Salad with Marinated Chicken, Poached Pear & Brandy Cocoa was a little absurd for the scenario. A plate of bread salad with a chicken thigh on top, when all we had was a plastic fork to cut it, made for some tricky maneuvering. On top of that, the poached pear in its own separate bowl was too large to be eaten in one bite and also could not be cut easily."

Scott admitted that he wasn't really a sports fan (at 1:50 in this video). So why would George Takata make him the featured chef on Valley Sports Pulse, his web site that's all about local sports?

Check out Scott's recipes. I can't picture the average sports fan cooking quinoa and making white balsamic vinaigrette for a "sungold tomato and sweet corn succotash salad." Or hunting for fresh fava beans for the "spring panzanella salad."

Maybe sports fans would make the "Blue Moon beer and wild mushroom soup," or the "all year Thanksgiving sandwich." Or maybe ribs and burgers are more your style.

What do you think? If any of you are sports fans, tell us what you eat at game time.

You know how it is when you find something you love and instantly you want everyone you know to love it, too? Here is a list of things the Beehive is into at this very moment. We invite you to share your obsession in the comments.

mortal.jpg

Kathy: I'm obsessed with Cassandra Clare's "The Mortal Instruments" trilogy. I was just half way through the second book last weekend, but I had to go out and buy the third book. I'm just a couple chapters into book 3 (but I think lounging around the pool with this book and a cocktail are in the plans this weekend). The series is reminiscent of Joss Wedon's demon world in "Buffy The Vampire Slayer" (though not as witty). I've been good so far about avoiding spoilers, but my will power is slipping.

Boom_Blox_Bash_Party.jpg

Mike Oz: Right now I'm lovin' "Boom Blox: Bash Party" for the Wii. The past two weekends we've had people over and ended up playing this game. It's a cool block and puzzle game, put together by EA and Steven Spielberg and it's great game for gatherings. Sometimes it's like Jenga, sometimes it's like "Duck Hunt" and sometimes you gotta get your Tim Lincecum on. Be careful, though, not only is it addicting, but there's a good chance that you'll be sore the next day from hurling bowling balls.

Joan: I'm obsessed with a long European vacation. More of my friends are moving to Europe, and I have standing invitations to crash with them in the U.K., Spain, France and Germany. My husband and I hope to fit all of these countries into one trip. If you know of a web site with cheap international flights, tell me in the comments!

Fresno's Jason Glover had a scare last night on the results show for Week 2 of "So You Think You Can Dance" -- but he ended up sailing through to the next round. In fact, he got such high praise from the judges that he seems in an even stronger position than before.

Jason and his partner, Caitlin Kinney, were sent to the Bottom 3 after the nationwide vote, which meant both had to perform solos for the judges. Jason had to compete against Max Kapitannikov and Kupono Aweau for the right to stay on the show. When the results were announced, judge Nigel Lythgoe offered glowing reviews for Jason's performance, calling his athletic and lyrical contemporary routine -- performed to Robin Thicke's "Superman" with soaring leaps, fantastic extensions and a fiercely controlled sense of power and tension -- one of the best solos seen on the show.

For the Bottom 3 women, Caitlin was an easy survivor as well -- though she didn't receive the same accolades. (Jason seemed amazed when the judges gushed about him.) Kayla Radomski got to stay, while Ashley Valerio went home.

UPDATE 5 p.m. 6/19: In response to my somewhat cheeky call for Rieu reviews, one commenter said:

"Mr. Munro, I suggest you go to an Andre Rieu concert. You will be amazed."

OK, I should have offered a little more background. Not only have I been to one Rieu concert, but I've been to TWO: one in Seattle that The Bee sent me to in 2006 for a preview profile of Rieu, and then his first appearance at the Save Mart. So, yes, I've done my Rieu duty. Not my thing. I don't begrudge the fun that his fans seem to have at his concerts, but the sticky-sweet, schmaltzy-slick approach to classical music that he takes -- beautiful themes pumped up to sugary heights performed by players that I suspect are selected as much for their happy stage presence and good looks as their playing ability -- wears a little thin.

ORIGINAL ENTRY 7 p.m. Thursday: I must have done something good in a past life, because I am NOT going to be at the Andre Rieu concert tonight at the Save Mart Center. But many thousands of people are, and I'd love to hear your thoughts on the waltz-er-mungous festivities. What color of taffeta gowns did the fetching young string players in the orchestra wear? Was there an act involving liederhosen? How glistening was Andre's hair? Did hundreds of couples make a bee-line to the stage area so they could hang out with the King of the Waltz? Post your recollections (and cell-phone pictures) in the comments section.

UPDATE 4:30 p.m. Thursday: The more I find out about this story, the weirder it becomes. My colleague Matt James has posted a fascinating extended account of his interview with Alphonso Bigelow regarding Bigelow's $10 million pledge to Fresno State athletics. Among the details:

  • Bigelow talks about his "commodities trading" business. It's not what I was expecting -- gold, silver, pork bellies, etc. "There's people that have large amounts of money who buy from people who own large amounts of commodities, privately," Bigelow told James. "It's not on the exchange. It's not on anything. And I take a commission on that." As James puts it: A guy in Europe has a bunch of diamonds for sale. A guy in India wants to buy a bunch of diamonds. Bigelow puts those two people together and gets a cut of the sale.

  • When asked how much the company makes, Bigelow said, "We don't make much money at all. We're looking at $12 million maybe, $13 million." James points out that the next logical question is why a company that makes $12 or $13 million would pledge $2 million a year for the next five years. And what happens if this company, which has been in existence for a year, only makes, say, $7 million next year?

  • Bigelow said he wanted to keep the donation a secret, but Fresno State talked him into a mega news conference, for which he showed up in a stretch Hummer limo.

Don't miss James' account. To me, this story is beginning to sound like a Robert Ludlum novel: a mysterious elderly British man at a Hong Kong cocktail party; an instant immersion in a lucrative kind of "commodities trading" that produces millions in easy profits; a company that can't be found on the Internet; a foreign board of directors wanting to turn over most of that company's profits to a California university's athletic department in the name of philanthropy; or is it just a way to get a tax break?

Words like "chemistry," "charisma" and "you rock" were tossed at him and his partner, Caitlin Kinney. But on last night's Week 2 competition show, Jason and Caitlin didn't receive any raves. Two of the three judges were downright hostile. And a lot of it had to do, I think, with the bad luck of getting stuck performing a hip-hop dance staged by the evening's weakest choreographer, Shane Sparks. Can you set the scene for us, Kathy?

KATHY: Jason and Caitlin drew hip-hop and were the first couple to perform a Sparks routine this season. Sparks, who was a fan-favorite in past seasons, gave the couple a softer style hip-hop routine that told the story of a guy longing for a girl he can't have, danced to Trey Songz's "Missing You." It meant the dancers had to show the crisp hip-hop precision AND had to convince viewers of great passion through soft, affectionate moves. To make the routine work, Sparks said: "They need to dance, they need to have character and they need to act like they are in love - they need all three of these things to make this piece come alive." No small order.

Fresno latin/hip-hop fusion band 40 Watt Hype keeps doing well for itself. The band recently won the San Francisco branch of Burger King's "Tu Ciudad, Tu Musica" contest and then got flown out to Miami to perform on Escandalo TV, a Spanish-language talk show that airs internationally.

You can read more about 40 Watt Hype's recent accolades in Friday's issue of 7, but for now enjoy the above video of the band's TV performance and check out the flier below for details on 40 Watt Hype's Fresno return on Friday night.

If you don't know, most Fridays you can find me on our former mayor's talk show on KYNO (1300 AM) dishing about weekend happenings. Well, last Friday, he sang me on to the show. It's so great that I have to share it with you all.

(Except for the fact that he mispronounces my last name).

Enjoy.

It's already Wednesday, and since you ate such interesting things last week, I figured I'd pose the question to you again.

But here's the twist: This time, tell us about your inexpensive eats of the week. Say, in the range of $10 or less for lunch and $15 or less for dinner?

Same rules apply. Feel free to dish -- on the good and the bad, in and out of the Valley. The more descriptive, the better.

Full credit for this post goes to Lisa Birrell, marketing manager at The Bee. After enjoying an $8 lunch (a spring roll, salad, garlic noodles, and sauteed shrimp and mango) at Mangosteen, she wanted more recession-friendly ideas.

So do I. Tell us, please: Where are you eating on the cheap?

Back in the '90s, I traveled to Los Angeles to report on the taping of one of the "Comic Relief" fund-raisers. "Comic Relief" was a series of efforts put together by Billy Crystal, Robin Williams and Whoopi Goldberg to raise money for the homeless.

This was a great humanitarian idea. No question about that. What shocked me was the mounds of food backstage for the performers. It seemed like the amount of money spent on feeding the comedians could have fed a lot of homeless people. Yes, some food is donated. The show could have asked that food be sent to local shelters.

When I asked why so much was spent on food, I was told that was the only way to get the celebrities to attend. That floored me. It was as if to say everyone involved had to be bribed to do charity work.

It's the most long-awaited sequel since "Weekend at Bernie's II" -- Fresno Uncensored 2!

You might remember that the original was voted "Most Helpful in Finding Criminals" by Fresno PD and "Most Overly Exaggerated Scandal EVAR" by Fresno Beehive.

Critics are already heralding F.U. 2's greatness by saying, "Oh, great! Here we go again. We thought they learned their lesson the first time."

Good stuff at Crossroads tonight as Mark Stuart & The Bastard Sons and The Councilmen share the stage. Mark Stuart & The Bastard Sons, an Austin-based Americana group, used to be called The Bastard Sons of Johnny Cash, and played in Fresno a few times under that name. The Councilmen, meanwhile, are pretty darn popular in Bakersfield for their folk-meets-country-meets-rock sound.

I'm a regular "Today Show" viewer. So, it's not surprising that some story lines start to bug me after awhile -- the annoying Duggar Family and never ending Casey Anthony saga come to mind. But nothing is getting more ridiculous than these weekly stories of kids surviving being impaled.

Today's story feature a boy who had a 9-inch stick stuck in his neck:

This comes after these wonderful stories over my breakfast:
* Boy impaled on bike handle
* Pencil lodges through toddler's neck
* Key lodged in 17-month-old's eye
* Antler pierces boy's brain
* Butter knife stuck in boy's head

I get it, NBC. Kids have accidents. Weird stuff happens. Can we move on now?

People magazine released its always amusing list of the hottest bachelors of 2009, and I'll be straight with you: if these are the hottest bachelors, I'm signing up for spinsterhood right now.

Here they are in all their glory.

1. Chace Cawford. I get this one confused with Zac Efron (they both look like Ellen DeGeneres to me), but I believe this is the one on "Gossip Girl." He's also soon to be in a remake of "Footloose," at which point, People will be forced to revoke the "Hot Bachelor" title. Because he's doing a remake of "Footloose." Seriously.

She's not from the United States. I'm as shocked as you are.

From The Daily Mail: Eighteen-year old Belgian Kimberley Vlaminck wanted three stars tattooed on her face, so she went to a Romanian tattoo artist and placed her order in both French and English, two languages the artist apparently was unfamiliar with.

After describing what she wanted, Vlaminck claims to have fallen asleep. While the man drilled ink into her face. Ink that ended up being not three stars, but 56 stars, spread across the girl's face like a gorgeous constellation:

  • Beehive commenter Wet Towel wrote on Monday pointing out that the ACLU Web site's homepage features a prominent story from Fresno: A lesbian woman says Community Regional Medical Center temporarily barred her partner from visiting her in the emergency room after she collapsed at the Meet in the Middle rally. "Why is nobody talking about this?" he asked. The ACLU's interest certainly revved up coverage of the story. The Bee's Barbara Anderson writes about the issue in Tuesday's Bee.
  • Sometimes when I finish reading a story in the New Yorker magazine I want to make copies for everyone I know. That was the case with a powerful piece in the June 1 issue written by surgeon Atul Gawande, the magazine's medical correspondent, who traveled to McAllen, Texas, to try to figure out why Medicare spends more per beneficiary there than in any other city except Miami. The conclusion: Our current system of paying doctors piecemeal based on how many tests, surgeries and other procedures they perform has led to a glut in -- big surprise! -- the number of tests, surgeries and other procedures. That leads to even greater medical costs and more of a chance that our health-care system -- which spends more per capita than any country on earth yet is leaving more people than ever without coverage -- will spiral into collapse. Gawande's article has struck a chord across the country. (It's described as a "must read" in the White House.) The New York Times wrote in an editorial praising the piece: "No doubt a vast majority of doctors strive to do the best for their patients. But many are influenced by fee-for-service financial incentives and some are unabashed profiteers ... In the long run, if doctors can't be induced to rein themselves in, there is little hope of lasting reform." As the debate on health care revvs up, this is a must-read article.
  • If you haven't noticed, California's state budget is on the verge of collapse. My colleague Bill McEwen has an insightful column in Tuesday's Bee. He uses the interactive budget balancer on the Los Angeles Times Web site to try to wipe out the state's $24 billion deficit -- and realizes how tough it could be. Give the budget balancer a try yourself. What would YOU be willing to cut?

I had a bunch of fun "Fresno Firsts" this weekend. It wasn't all firsts, as you'll see below, but there were some good ones.

Read up, then share your weekend adventures in the comments.

SUNDAY

  • Went to Maxx Putt, the glow-in-the-dark miniature golf course, for the first time. I was probably more excited about this than the 3-year-old whose birthday party I was attending. I thought that place was awesome and if I was 8 I would think it was 10x more awesome. In addition to mini golf, they also got this thing called Balladium, that's kinda like Assault on "American Gladiators." I smell a new event for Blogger Olympics.
  • I bought my first tree. Special slogan shout out to Belmont Nursery, whose sign said "Bot any plants lately?" I heartily chuckled at that.

UPDATE #2: Time's up! Answer after the jump.

UPDATE: Nobody's come close, so a couple more hints are in order. He is on "Heroes." He is in the new "Star Trek" movie. His name rhymes with "Tackary Pinto."

Original post: You may recall that a few weeks ago, in a previous G the C! post, the featured celeb was Mr. Hugh Jackman picking up dog poop on a sidewalk. Today's post features another celeb in the act of cleaning up after his dog. Why? Because I like using the word "poop" in a post?

Yes. But also because I am more than a little disgusted by people who do not clean up after their dogs. It's simple: if you're a dog owner, you're responsible for whatever that dog does. Pick up its poop, or you're a worthless, inconsiderate excuse for a human being. How difficult can it be if pampered, entitled celebrities do it, right?

Now onto the celeb in question. This one is a little tougher, so a hint is in order: He's a television actor breaking onto the movie scene.

gallery_main-guess-who-dog-poop-06142009-13.jpg

I challenge you, without looking on the Internets, to figure out who this celebrity is. There is no prize involved here, only the satisfaction of being right, or of simply finding out the answer, which I will tell you later today.

In my Arts Watch roundup that I posted Friday, I write about the Polly Victor retrospective at Gallery 25. I forgot to mention that there will be a reception on Sunday (June 14) at the gallery from 1-4 p.m., and that some members of the Victor family will attend.

Also, some sad news. I'm told that another death hit the family. Angela of The Fresno Center for Non-Violence reports:

You may have heard that, tragically, Matthew Victor, Polly's son, 50 years old, was killed by a hit and run driver in Fresno about 10 days ago. After the reception on June 14, there is to be a memorial for Matthew. My understanding is that it will be from 5 to 7:30 p.m. at the Au Lac Restaurant, 1495 N Van Ness Ave, in Fresno. Remembrances: The Community Alliance, P.O. Box 5077, Fresno, CA 93755-5077.

My thoughts are with the Victor family during this difficult time.

I knew it would be an impressive crowd Friday night for the Fresno Philharmonic's inaugural pops concert at Woodward Park the moment I got off on the Highway 41 Friant Road exit. It was about half an hour before the concert began, and the line of cars waiting to get into the park nearly stretched to the freeway. The concert ended up starting 20 minutes late just so people could park and get to their seats.

And what did they find when they got there? An absolutely perfect evening, temperature-wise, and a pretty fun musical one as well with guest artists Sons of the San Joaquin. With their booming cowboy-song voices and laidback, get-along-little-doggies charm, The Sons know how to smooth their way into the hearts of a crowd. And it was pretty obvious that this partisan turnout included many of their fans. Adding to the mix was the superb Rich O'Brien on guitar, Richard Chon on fiddle and Ray Appleton on guitar/harmonica.

I'm just so impressed with the richness of the band's sound, and particularly the character-drenched voices of lead singers Jack and Joe Hannah. When Jack Hannah sings about the loneliness of the frontier and the solitary life of the cowboy, his deep voice evokes a wide open sky with millions of stars -- and a melancholy young man looking up at them.

In terms of the orchestral accompaniment, I liked this high-concept performance better than the Beatles concert earlier this season, when the orchestra was mostly overpowered by the amplified sound of the guest artists. In arrangements of such Sons songs as "Way Out There," the orchestra was used to strong effect. There were moments when the strings soared and the brass flared in a way that added a whole new depth to familiar music. When principal oboist Jose Diaz played the theme to "Shenendoah," the winsome sound brought tears to my eyes.

RIPPED FROM THE HEADLINES: Sometimes art feels as contemporary as a news Web site. That's the way I felt when I walked into Corridor 2122 last week to look at its current group members' show and saw a charcoal drawing by Stephen Dent hanging on the wall.

Titled "Aircraft Study," the work is sketched over a printed world map -- the colorful, cheap kind that you'd find in a National Geographic or hanging in a school classroom. Dent has sketched out the blunt outline of an airplane.

aircraftstudydent.JPG

The fuselage is mostly depicted with darker charcoal strokes. He's left part of the original map uncovered in a use of negative space that helps define the shape of the airplane and what could be a runway. Here's the weird thing: the one unadulterated part of the original map just happens to be the stretch of ocean between South America and Europe into which Air France Flight 447 plunged last week. Up until that air crash, I'd only heard vaguely about the perilous "Horse Latitudes," but with the news story being so fresh in my mind, I immediately made the leap. To me, the thick scrawl of the charcoal seemed ominous, and I could imagine the plane going down.

I'm always glad when I attend an event and get a new twist, especially when it's a fund-raiser.

pinc.jpg

The inaugural PINC fund-raiser, which was last Saturday and raised $15,000, lived up to the groups mantra of a nonprofit group that break the mold and goes beyond the same old thing. Most fund-raisers, and I have been to my fair share, are so dull people can't wait to escape -- offering little more than a typical banquet and some ho-hum auction baskets.

PINC's fund-raiser, held in the beautifully revamped patio/pool area at San Joaquin Hotel to benefit Angel Babies of Nancy Hinds Hospice, ditched the sit-down meal for fun food stations hosted by Love&Garlic. No gross rice pilaf, rubbery chicken or over-cooked steaks here. We're talking sliders, a variety of quesadillas and shrimp tacos. Plus some yummy mini cupcakes from the Cupcakes Bakery. The DJ played hip-hop tunes and got the crowd of mostly 20-somethings dancing. Let's just say three hours into this shindig, people were still milling about.

Kudos to the young ladies in PINC for ditching the stuffiness and daring to have some fun for a good cause.

Fresno's Jason Glover learned early in Thursday's results show that he's safe for another week on "So You Think You Can Dance." He was not in the Bottom Three in terms of the nationwide vote and wasn't one of the six dancers who had to perform solo for the judges in order to stay on the show.

The Bottom Three couples were Paris and Tony; Carla and Jonathan; and Vitolio and Asuka. After the six danced solo, the judges sacked Paris and Tony. I don't think there was any surprise they got the boot. In last night's show they seemed the clunkiest out of the 10 couples.

One thing that did surprise me was how tough the judges were on all six of the bottom dancers tonight. They especially beat up on the men, noting that none of them danced well enough in their solo spots to indicate they'd be staying in this competition long. That's good news for hometown boy Jason, who with his talent and charisma won't have to worry for weeks about staying on the show.

In addition to being the Hot Girl du jour, having graced most men's magazine covers by now, Megan Fox is quickly proving to be the go-to person for stupid public declarations (she's surpassed only by her "Transformers" co-star Shia LaBeouf, who just can't stop talking about his mom having sex for some ungodly reason).

To sum up: According to the judges, Fresno's Jason Glover did great on his first competition night as a Top 20 finalist on "So You Think You Can Dance." But so did just about everyone else. I'm surprised that the three judges didn't wind up bloodied and bruised from falling all over themselves lavishing praise on the contestants. Either we're dealing with a superstar group of Top 20 dancers or witnessing first-night grade inflation.

Still, Jason, a Bullard High School grad, and his new partner, Caitlin Kinney, got enthusiastic reviews from the judges:

  • Adam Shankman told the couple, "Very simply, you guys rocked!" He praised Jason's handwork and footwork in the Bollywood-style choreography. "You did the thing that is so essential to a great dancer: you made it look like it was nothing. It was absolutely effortless. I'm telling you, you are going to be a little force of nature in this competition if you keep it up."
  • Mary Murphy was very positive, though she reserved her banshee-like screams proclaiming her trademark "hot tamale train" -- can a person be prosecuted for assaulting her own vocal cords? -- for another couple, Max Kapitannikov and Kayla Radomski. But she did heap effusive compliments on Jason, telling him: "You just have this charisma." She continued: "Good luck with you guys, I don't think you have anything to worry about."
  • The traditional toughie judge, Nigel Lythgoe, was also highly complimentary, comparing Jason and Kinney's Bollywood performance to last year's lauded contestants Joshua and Katie. "You brought it tonight," he said. "You encapsulated that whole thing."

Local stuff making the rounds:

  • After a banner containing language supporting Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Pride was hung at the Fig Garden Library, a patron complained -- and the library took it down. Now people are talking about censorship issues. One person on Twitter says the library replaced the material with "traditional wedding books." Here's the library's response.
  • Fresno Famous reports that there was a motion Tuesday at the City Council to eliminate the budget for the Fresno Film and Entertainment Commission. This is an issue that seems to pop up every year. The budget for the commission will be discussed 2 p.m. Thursday, and proponents are urging filmmakers and entertainment-loving types to show up and tell the council why the FFEC is important, Famous Whitewater tells us.
  • A runaway bull collapsed and died after being lassoed near Parlier City Hall about noon today, officials say. The bull's death ended a morning-long rampage through the south Fresno County city.
  • It's official: There will be two new Macys stores in the Valley: one at River Park and the other at the Visalia Mall.
  • Good Company Players got a sort-of shout-out on Sunday's Tony Awards telecast when Audra McDonald presented an award. The idea was to flash a photo from McDonald's childhood on the screen, but as she pointed out with a laugh, she wasn't even in the photo. I think (but won't swear) that I recognized Duane Boutte, another Broadway Fresnan, as a Junior Company member instead.

It's Wednesday afternoon. Not too early to start thinking about what to eat this weekend. And not to late to remember where you dined last week.

So, in the interest of helping each other find a good meal (or just a treat), please tell us where you've eaten in the past week. Feel free to dish -- on the good and the bad, in and out of the Valley.

I do have one rule, however. If you had a bad experience, don't just say it sucked. Tell us what happened. Was the food cold? The servers rude? The drinks watery?

Since I'm proposing this game, I'll start off with high praise for the chocolate-chip cookies from Charlotte's Bakery in the Tower District.

But my best experience this week? Eating Golden Sweet apricots, Flavorella plumcots and Blenheim apricots at Blossom Bluff Orchards in Parlier.

What about you?

This is a big week for Fresno's Jason Glover. He's all over Google, for one thing. As one of the Top 20 finalists on "So You Think You Can Dance," the 21-year-old Bullard High graduate is the subject of news stories, blog posts and fan sites. And tonight he hits the big time. (The show starts at 8 p.m. on Fox, and at 9 p.m. Thursday we learn the results.) A bunch of his friends and family will gather to watch at World Sports Cafe at 7:30 p.m.

Beehiver Rick Bentley had a story in Tuesday's Bee in which he talked by phone with Glover during a break in rehearsals for the show.

The finals are where the high-stakes fun begins, and I'm sure lots of people in Fresno will be rooting for Jason to go all the way. The big question as tonight's competition starts is who his partner will be. That can be a make-or-break development, because for the first half of the competition season, couples are kicked off or advance on the basis of their joint merits. One blog is predicting that Glover will be paired up with Caitlin Kinney.

BIZ DLW PUBLIC HOUSE 1.JPG

The sad saga of Granite Park continued today, as Public House was put up for public auction.

Problem was: Nobody bid.

Here's what The Bee is reporting:

Grace O'Malley's Public House, a popular but financially troubled restaurant at Granite Park in Fresno, went back to the lender today in a brief auction that drew no bids ...

[Developer Milt] Barbis did not attend the auction, but Kirk Vartanian, a new investor in the restaurant, did. Vartanian has said Barbis no longer would be involved in running the restaurant, but Vartanian had no immediate comment about the auction. He said he will make a statement this afternoon.

Sigh. Let's just take this place over. I have $11 in my pocket. Who wants to join me?

A 72-year old great grandmother was Tased by police after she was pulled over for speeding and refused to sign the ticket she'd been issued.

Did she deserve it?

Here's the rest of the story: Kathryn Winkfein was pulled over for going 60 mph in a 45 mph construction zone. She refused to sign the ticket, then got out of her truck and started yelling profanities at the officer, trying to take away his ticket book and telling him to either Tase her or take her to jail. She pushed the officer toward oncoming traffic, and nearly stepped into it herself.

After being Tased, an ambulance was called to evaluate Winkfein, who was fine (it is recommended that Tasers not be used on the elderly and/or infirm). She was then charged with "a Class A misdemeanor of resisting arrest and detention, punishable by up to one year in jail and a fine of up to $4,000."

Fox News has video of the Tasing (but, if you'll notice, not the part preceding the Tasing):

"American Idol" runner-up Adam Lambert's much-talked-about Rolling Stone cover is out. It's no surprise that he talks about being gay in the issue (or at least it shouldn't be to anyone paying attention to pop culture gossip).

Here's a snippet from an AP story on the Rolling Stone cover:

According to Rolling Stone, Lambert was open about his sexuality backstage at "Idol." In March, photos surfaced online of Lambert kissing his ex-boyfriend.

"Going into 'Idol,' I assumed, 'OK, people are going to talk,"' he says. "I mean, I've been living in Los Angeles for eight years as a gay man, I've been at clubs making out with somebody in the corner. But photographic evidence? Didn't count on that. Wasn't ready for that."

He says he worried that a public announcement would overshadow his singing, so he decided not to respond and largely kept his personal life under wraps on the show.

"I'm an entertainer, and who I am and what I do in my personal life is a separate thing," he says. "It shouldn't matter. Except it does. It's really confusing."

Lambert says he isn't interested in being the poster child for gay rights. "I'm trying to be a singer, not a civil-rights leader."

So, what do you think? Should Adam have talked about this during "Idol" or does it matter? What do you think of his choice for talking in Rolling Stone?

fox_10-kiefer-lincoln_2309abrF.JPGStart your countdown clocks. There are only 222 days until the eighth season of the Fox series "24" begins. It starts at 9 p.m. Jan. 17 on Fox. If you don't want to know what might happen, stop reading.

Although it looked certain (yeah, right) Jack Bauer was about to die at the end of the seventh season, Kiefer Sutherland is going to be back. He will get to growl and torture his way across a new city as the action moves to New York.

Also coming back are Cherry Jones, Mary Lynn Rajskub and Annie Wersching.

In this new day, CTU is back. It is being run by MBA-schooled Brian Hastings (Mykelti Williamson "Forrest Gump"). Bauer has another partner in Cole Ortiz (Prinze Jr.), an ex-Marine who runs the division's Field Operations.

The support team includes data analyst Dana Walsh (Katee Sackhoff "Battlestar Galactica") and systems analyst Arlo Glass (John Boyd "The Notorious Bettie Page").

President Allison Taylor (Jones) has a new chief of staff (Chris Diamantopoulos). Jennifer Westfeldt ("Grey's Anatomy") is an ambitious journalist and Anil Kapoor ("Slumdog Millionaire") makes his American TV debut as a Middle Eastern leader who comes to the U.S. on a peacemaking mission.

Tick, tick, tick.

I've been off exploring Canada and New England the past two weeks, starting in Montreal and ending in Boston (with stops in Quebec City, Prince Edward Island, Sydney, Halifax and Bar Harbor). I'm in love with this part of the world. It's beautiful, embraces the outdoors and values its historical past (plus there's great shopping in the bigger cities). I could easily have spent months there and never been bored, there was so much to see and do.

Along the way, as I usually do on vacation, I keep an eye out for things that make me pause, laugh or just wonder WTF. Here's a sampling.

I still can't get this one off my mind. I found the aftermath of this farmer's market in Boston, near Little Italy, appalling. I still don't understand why they wasted all this food. When I walked through the market a few hours before this, it was jam-packed with people bartering like they were selling shares on the Stock Market (just in thick Boston accents). I had no idea produce could create such a frenzy. They left the street looking worse than the closing floor of Wall Street.

As anyone who reads the Internet already knows, Apple unveiled a new iPhone today. The iPhone 3G S boasts video capability, an improved camera and more upgrades that are outlined here.

Prices are $199 (16GB) and $299 (32GB) if you're eligible to upgrade. Consequently, Apple is dropping the price of the 8GB iPhone 3G to $99. The phones come out June 19.

Once you get past those headlines, here's the sucky part: If you're not eligible for an upgrade, you will most likely be drooling over these new iPhones for a while. Prices are $399 and $499 if AT & T isn't willing to re-up with you yet. (Sidenote: For more of today's AT & T woes, read this).

I'm one of those mid-contracters. And I'm good with that -- because we all know Apple will be trotting out something new and salacious this time next year.

... for Blenheim apricots.

My column from last week listed the few places in the Valley where you can get Blenheims. If you like specialty fruit, don't hesitate. The season for these flavorful 'cots is painfully short.

Greg Vartanian, co-owner of The Vintage Press and Jack & Charlie's restaurants in Visalia, e-mailed me with high praise for Blenheims. "It's such a wonderful fruit and so few know about them," he writes.

At Jack & Charlie's, they sometimes serve a Blenheim apricot tart. Vartanian was happy to share the recipe.

Confession: I haven't had a chance to test the recipe yet, and probably won't get to it until early next week. But I'm sharing it now, so you don't miss out on a week of the harvest season. (I'll add my own cooking notes in a future post.)

Here's our look back at the weekend that was. If you did something cool (or not-so-cool), let us know about it in the comments.

MEN WHO COOK
My second attempt at Men Who Cook was much smoother than the first. It was busy, yes, but with far less headaches. I figure I served up somewhere in the neighborhood of 300 carne asada tacos and most people seemed to really like them. The tastiness was more a testament to Guadalajara than me. James Collier also deserves some props to helping me out when the lines were really long. Overall, it was a good night. I heard the art museum had about 800 people there -- more than the 600 that were expected, so that's a success.

COMMENT OF THE DAY
In an earlier post this week about "I'm a Celebrity: Get Me Out of Here!," I tossed off a cheap joke (who, me?) in my description of one of the contestants:

Heidi is suddenly blathering about Christianity, Patti Blagojevich is looking like an unbathed Junior Leaguer and a Mohawk-impaired, chest-baring Sanjaya is giving his interviews in a hot tub leering like Hugh Hefner. Such dysfunction, such bickering, such sucky celebrities!

A Beehive reader responds:

What's with all the Junior League bashing lately? This is the second stereotypical reference to Junior League I've seen in the last week. I think I need to start a "Did they just say Junior League?" blog... Really Donald, I'm sending you a personal invitation to come and check us out sometime ... I think you would be surprised!
Sincerely, A Beehive Fan and your 2009-2010 President, Junior League of Fresno, Inc.

My response: Ha. In my defense, I can tell you that I have a good friend who just joined the Junior League of El Paso, and when she told me and my college buddies the news on Facebook, we razzed her no end. She barked back (primly, of course) that Junior League is long past the days of white gloves and slightly tipsy afternoon garden bridge parties. You're right, Madame President: I should check out what the local Junior Leaguers are up to these days. I'll take you up on your offer!

Since concert and club posters are a frequent topic of discussion around The Beehive, I thought you guys might be interested in this book that came across my desk recently. It's called "Gig Posters: Rock Show Art of the 21st Century." And it's totally rad.

From an art perspective, there's some really nice work inside that'll have you flipping page after page. From a collector's perspective, there are 101 perforated 11 x 14 replica posters that you can totally frame and hang on your wall. From a music buff's perspective, it's awesome to see artwork for your favorite groups. For instance, I geeked at this Wu-Tang poster.

Artists included in the book range from Wilco to Arcade Fire, from Kanye West to The Shins. Beyond just cool posters, it gives you profiles on the designers and their other work.

If you can't shell out the $40 for the book, you can freely surf the Web site that inspired it -- gigposters.com. There are over 100,000 show posters on there. Even some from Fresno and Visalia. Below are some examples of what you'll find in the book.

Original post: Actor David Carradine was found dead today in a hotel in Thailand, where he was filming a British movie called "Stretch." He was found with a rope tied around his neck (and, um, possibly other parts?), but authorities won't say for sure if it was suicide until results from the autopsy are in.

It was a great show, by the way. Some of the best singing I've heard in a national tour coming through the Saroyan.

ORIGINAL ENTRY: Tonight's the night: I take the stage as the celebrity speller in the national touring production of "The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee" at the Saroyan Theatre. Here's my goal: to not be the first of the four audience volunteers booted off stage. Then again, if I make it past that point, I'm going to have to dance, and that's a scary thought in itself. (Not so much for me as the audience.)

The one thing I know is that there's no chance I can win. Not even national spelling bee champs have made it into this intermissionless musical's second half -- it's not written that way. (Weird bit of trivia: When Julie Andrews was the celebrity speller, she missed on "supercalifragilisticexpealadoucious.") It kind of takes the pressure off when I know I'm destined to lose!

You might recall my exploits of Men Who Cook 2007. It involved tears and hundreds of chicken tacos. Well, the Fresno Art Museum has once again convinced me to participate in Men Who Cook, which is Friday night.

menwhocook.jpg

This year I'm going the partnership route, teaming with my favorite Fresno taco makers, Guadalajara. I'll be going into their kitchen to make their mouth-watering carne asada, then I'll be dishing it up on Friday.

If I'm not enough of an incentive -- Bill McEwen will be there too.

On behalf of the Beehive, I'd like to apologize to anyone who went out and ate
a Gutwrencher, then came back and was assaulted by the human equivalents
of heartburn and acid reflux, and the worst dessert hybrid ever created.

To make up for your discomfort, we offer you this picture of a kitten hugging a stuffed sheep.

To celebrate summer, Coldstone Creamery has put out a limited-time creation called Jell-O Pudding Ice Cream. It's ice cream, but with the texture of pudding.

PHOTO_3974407_94312_7161701_ap_320X240.jpg

So far there are two flavors available: Butterscotch Velvet, which features butterscotch pudding ice cream with Butterfinger, Reese's Peanut Butter Cup and caramel, and Chocolate-y Goodness, which features chocolate pudding ice cream with peanut butter, caramel and fudge.

What say you? Orgasm in a cone or vomit-inducing abomination?

The new flavors are supposed to be available beginning today through July 28. Go out, give it a try and report back.

J-Live Entertainment announced recently that the headliner for Kings Fair will be singer/reality TV guy ... Ray J! He'll be performing July 10 at the fair.

While we have no doubt that VH1-watching, mainstream radio-listening females are excited at this news (Hint: If you such a person, you can buy tickets here), we can't help but find this a little troubling.

Sure, Ray J is a no-talent nepotism benefactor, but that's so the norm nowadays we aren't depressed impressed anymore. We're much more worried about the potential for a public health disaster. With Ray J, Bret Michaels and Kim Kardashian all coming to this area in the same 30-day span, we have to wonder what is being done to protect the people of this area from airborne viruses?

It's bad enough that Bret Michaels and Kim K are in town on the same day -- June 19, with Bret at Tachi Palace and Kim at the opening of Edge -- but to adding Ray J to the mix is like a three-headed, living, breathing STD.

I hope someone starts handing out free face masks with ticket purchases.

im-a-celebrity-get-me-out-of-here.jpg

Is anyone else watching the northbound-southbound-Amtrak-express-trains-in-head-on-collision wreck known as "I'm a Celebrity: Get Me Out of Here!", which NBC is smearing across the week's TV lineup like monkey doo-doo at the zoo? I'm not saying I'm totally sucked in, but my household TV is firmly in the show's grasp, and I've seen enough to wonder if Spencer and Heidi Pratt had their brains scooped out by an alien and replaced with hair product before agreeing to appear on the show. Did they really think this would help their so-called "careers"?

All I know is that last night Spencer got BAPTIZED. By Stephen Baldwin, of all people, in a dunk-in-the-river scene that looked like what would happen if alcoholic Baptists decided to settle a bar bet. I can't figure out if the Spencer/Heidi monster is truly as dumb as it appears, or if it's all part of a grand ratings plan. (They've evidently quit for good.Think they'll still put the show on their resumes?) Here's hoping for a good round of dengue fever for the survivors.

chilidogdiner.jpgRemember your responses to What do you want on a hot dog?

Well, Tower Dogs isn't the only specialty hot-dog shop that's paying attention to your desires. Two other restaurants love to experiment and even offer some of your ideas. Give them a call and see what they'll do for ya:

One is called Chili Dog Diner in the Bulldog Plaza at Barstow and Cedar avenues, (559) 439-3647. Chili Dog Diner opened about a month ago, so it's still adding a lot of hot dogs to its list. Here are some of its popular ones:

  • The Chicago Dog: A hot dog with mustard, relish, onions, tomatoes, pickle spears and celery salt.
  • The Reuben: A hot dog with Thousand Island dressing, sauerkraut and Swiss cheese.
  • The Gutwrencher: A hot dog, with mustard, relish, onions, jalapeños, hot wax peppers and a sauce that's "hotter than tabasco," says owner George McNeal. (This one is hot -- really hot. If you get The Gutwrencher, ask for some Tums. Chili Dog Diner gives them out.)
  • The Bulldog: One bun with two hot dogs, mustard, relish and onions.

The other is called Booney's Dogs & More at Shaw and West avenues, (559) 261-1212. Booney's has been open for more than a year, so it has had more time to experiment. Choose from a variety of hot dogs and sausages, then top them any way you like. Or order one of the popular combinations. Here are a few of them:

  • The California Dog: A hot dog with tomato slices, avocado and alfalfa sprouts.
  • The Caliente Dog: A hot dog with pepper Jack cheese, homemade chili, pico de gallo and jalapeños.
  • The Tower of Pizza: An Italian sausage with marinara sauce and melted mozzarella cheese.
  • The Pastrami Dog: A hot dog topped with shaved pastrami, Swiss cheese and sauerkraut.
  • The Veggie Dog: A vegetarian hot dog topped with fresh tomato slices, onions, wax pepper, grated cheddar cheese and lettuce.
  • That's a Wrap, James: Created for a customer named James, this hot dog is wrapped in bacon and deep fried, then topped with barbecue sauce, diced onions and blue-cheese crumbs.

"New Wrinkles" is looking and feeling quite svelte these days. Could we go so far as to say it's shed a few pounds? There's a trim, fit flair to this year's annual senior variety show at Fresno City College.

A big reason for that, I suspect, is that director Fred Bologna made sure that the show clocks in at a reasonable length. Last year's production was, um, a little on the bloated side. An audience member shouldn't feel as if he or she has actually moved closer to retirement during a production.

For this year's event, titled "Love and Marriage: For Better ... For Worse," Bologna cut more than dozen numbers just days before opening. I know that those cuts must have been painful to performers who lost prized solos. There should be some consolation, though, knowing that a streamlined show is better for everyone around. It still isn't brief, mind you -- the opening night performance ran about two and a half hours -- but the show never drags.

Lots of people are talking -- especially on Twitter -- about crowd estimates given in Bee articles for the two Prop 8 rallies held over the weekend. There's a short article in Tuesday's state and local section that addresses the issue. From the story:

Police and organizers of Saturday's rally for same-sex marriage put the crowd at between 2,500 and 5,000 people. For Sunday's event, supporting the traditional definition of marriage, estimates came in between 300 and more than 3,000 people.
Organizers of Sunday's event said that more than 3,000 people attended. Fresno police spokesman Jeff Cardinale on Monday said officers estimated attendance at 1,000 on the high end and at 300 to 600 on the low end.
The Rev. Jim Franklin of Cornerstone Church in Fresno, who organized Sunday's "Still Standing in the Middle for Marriage" rally, said the number was arrived at after organizers handed out cards asking people to sign in during the event. Franklin said the card system was put into place to get an accurate count. "Those are our numbers and how we got them," he said.

From what I understand after talking to newsroom folks, I'd like to offer a couple of points:

Point No. 1. For both articles, which were written by different reporters, two different sources were sought: the organizers themselves and the police. Reporters aren't trained in crowd-counting techniques -- and, believe me, it's hard to estimate the size of any crowd after it reaches a couple of hundred people -- and so they rely on other sources.

Sunday's story about the Saturday rally included both sources: Organizers said cumulative turnout was 4,000 to 5,000. Fresno police estimated Saturday's crowd peaked at 2,500 to 3,000 people. Monday's story about the Sunday rally included the organizer estimate of more than 3,000 but did not include a police estimate because the police at the scene would not give it to the reporter.

Did this make for an ideal story? No. But when the police won't talk, there wasn't anything the reporter could have done on deadline. It's nice that the police came back with an official estimate on Monday, but that didn't do much good on Sunday night.

Creative Fresno's bartender challenge series is back with another duel this evening.

Artist Stephanie Pearl (you've seen her work at DCAC, among other places) is pitted against Joey "Ms. Joey/Lola La Chola" Fernandez (a frequent Beehive commenter and ex-Smog City Roller Grrl). The two of them will compete for tips with all the money going to Creative Fresno's mural fund. Check out the completely unoffensive flier:

It just seems like only a few days ago the winner of the latest "American Idol" competition was announced. Oh, wait, it was. No matter. The producers are wasting no time getting started on the next edition.

Auditions for the ninth season of "American Idol" begin June 14 in Boston. There also will be tryouts in Atlanta, Orlando, Denver, Dallas and Chicago. Don't go booking flights. There will be an audition in Pasadena at the end of the month.

Singing hopefuls should show up at the Rose Bowl on June 30 for the first round of the auditions. There are few details about the Southern California tryouts, but in Boston, no one will be allowed to camp out. Wristbands will be passed out a couple of days in advance. That's probably how it will work in Pasadena.

Remember, you must be 16-28 years old as of June 12, 2009. Applicants must be eligible to work in the U.S. Go to americanidol.com for specific information on restrictions.

Good luck.

MTD_MCC_COMMUNITY_GARDEN_2.JPG

The Bee's Russell Clemings has a story in Tuesday's Bee about the Tower District's fledgling community garden and the conflict between police and those who use it:

Police say they have received frequent complaints of drug use, drinking and homelessness at the garden's site, 1281 N. Maroa Ave., behind Livingstone's restaurant and the Brass Unicorn store, among others.
... But the garden's manager, Joshua Trevino, says police and other city officials aren't distinguishing between lawbreakers and gardeners. On May 23, Trevino said, a police helicopter hovered overhead while his gardeners were taking a break. Over a loudspeaker, he said, officers ordered the gardeners to leave or be arrested.

This issue has had some interesting comments on Mindhub. After the break, a post from one of the garden's neighbors. What do you think?

farmersmarketfruit.jpgIf you're not already friends with a fruit grower, it's time to chat them up at the farmers' markets.

Here's why: A couple of weeks ago, I was talking with Dinuba farmer Eugene Etheridge at the Market on the Mall -- the new farmers market on Fulton Mall.

After trading notes about Flavor King pluots and the like, Etheridge said, "You really know your fruit." Then he offered to bring me something he called a Flavorella aprium -- a cross between an apricot and a plum that resembles an apricot. (It's also known as a Flavorella plumcot.)

With a very short harvest season in the Valley, these Flavorellas are a fleeting fruit. Plus, Flavorellas are delicate, and they fall off the tree at the slightest breeze, Etheridge said.

But what flavor and texture! Upon my return to the market to pick up them up, I took a bite. So much sweet juice spurted in front of me that I had to ask for a napkin.

The blueberry vendor at the next stand was jealous. He'd tasted a Flavorella that morning. If I hadn't showed up, the loot would have gone to him.

"I was hoping you wouldn't make it to the market today," he said.

This too, can be your experience if you take the time to talk to farmers. Spring and summer are the best times of year to make such friends. Show your interest and reminisce with them over past fruit experiences, and they just might bring something special for you.

Not sure where to go? Start here.

It's June 1, which means that the deadline is here for the Fresno Metropolitan Museum to repay its $15 million loan guaranteed by the city. The museum used its building and land as collateral for the loan, which means it's possible that the city could foreclose upon both. You can read today's Page A1 story by Bee reporter George Hostetter and me about some of the questions about the museum's future here.

So what happens next?

Nothing immediately, it seems. Ashley Swearengin didn't march into the Met this afternoon and snag a few paintings to hang on her City Hall office wall. There are no plans to turn the fourth floor into a rumpus room for children of city workers or for an exhibit to open titled "A Salute to Fresno's City Council" featuring an animatronic figure of Henry T. Perea.

I checked with George, who's been following the story closely, and he tells me that there's actually a "buffer" period of sorts involving the guaranteed loan -- a cooling-off clause, if you will -- that means the museum could still pull off a miracle and repay its loan in a certain number of days. (If you know of any kindly billionaires, put in a good word with them.) Otherwise, the city and museum officials are going to have to hammer out some sort of power-sharing arrangement. We're expecting to hear the museum's plan in a couple of weeks. I've heard a date of June 16.

For now, then, we're kind of in a holding pattern. But things could move quickly.

In the meantime, I'm trying to track down other city-owned museums in the country to see how other communities handle the challenges of running a taxpayer-funded institution. If you can think of any, let me know.

Seven years ago today I arrived in Fresno with a U-Haul carrying everything I owned. I lugged it all up a flight of stairs in 100-degree heat and fell asleep that night to the sound of thunderstorms. Right away, I knew I wasn't in the Bay Area anymore.

At that point -- 22, single and a week out of college -- Fresno was just a new place to me: first job, first time paying the rent all by myself. In my mind it was temporary. I'd live here a couple years before heading off to my next adventure. Eventually, I'd head home to the Bay Area. That was the plan, at least.

Seven years later, I'm still here. I've got a 559 phone number. I've grown accustomed to 100-degree days (even in May!) And Fresno isn't just temporary. It's home.

Miley Cyrus won't have to hit the unemployment line next year. The Disney Channel has ordered a fourth season of her "Hannah Montana." Production of season three ends this week and will resume early next year on season four.

Here's a little behind-the-scenes news. The fourth season will have the Stewarts dealing with saying farewell to their beachfront Malibu home.

Along with Cyrus, the series stars Emily Osment, Jason Earles and Billy Ray Cyrus.

You may be asking yourself why this show continues to stay on the air. Obviously you are not a tween-age girl. The series, which premiered in March 2006, averages 4.4 million viewers per episode. The Aug. 17, 2007 episode is the highest rated series telecast in the history of basic cable television. More than 10.7 million watched. The reason that episode spiked so high is that it featured a gust appearance by the Jonas Brothers.

And there is more. "Hannah Montana" has generated two double-platinum soundtracks that made history as the first TV soundtrack to debut on the Billboard Top 200.
