Christian Busath absolutely knew it for certain when he saw "The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee" for the first time.

"I told myself I had to be in this show, and I have to be William Barfee," he told me in a phone interview. (He grew up in the Elk Grove area, where he was spending a two-week break.) Busath finally got his big theatrical break when he was cast in the national touring production of the musical.

I write about "Spelling Bee" -- and my stint as a guest "celebrity speller" at the Wednesday evening performance at the Saroyan Theatre -- in my column in Sunday's Spotlight section. Here's some more of my interview with Busath:

Question: What connection do you feel with your character?

Answer: When I was his age, I was definitely the short, overweight awkward kid trying to fit in. For William, spelling is the way he fits in. For me, the way I fit in was theater. I used comedy to gain acceptance.

In Sunday's Spotlight section I snagged a question-and-answer interview with tenor great Marcello Giordani, who is singing for Fresno Grand Opera in a concert tribute to Luciano Pavarotti. (We ended up doing an email exchange between Fresno and Sicily, something that doesn't happen every day for me.) The concert is Saturday, June 6, at the Saroyan Theatre.

For those who can't wait, Fresno Grand Opera general director Ron Eichman passed along the evening's concert program.

Since we want you to love the Fresno music scene even more, we're teaming with local acts to give you 100%-free-of-charge music in a feature we're calling Sounds of the City.

We'll start with Americana/rockabilly band Motel Drive, which is putting out its debut CD, "$5 Tricks." The band is this week's Artist You Should Know in The Bee and is playing twice this week. Fliers below for those. Right now, here's my favorite song of Motel Drive's "Drifter Blues."

Admit it. You have had a secret desire over the years to reveal your true feelings to someone. You probably chickened out. Maybe it is time to get it off your chest.

In connection with the release of the new Hayden Panettiere movie "I Love You Beth Cooper," a Web site has been set up where you can upload your confessional videos.

That's right. Things you were afraid to say to one person can now be shared with the masses. Talk about that special teacher. Confess your interest in your neighbor. Tell that person who treated you like dirt when you were in high school just what you think.

Go to iloveyoubethcooper.com for "Beth Cooper Moments of Truth." It gets better, selected private confessions will be featured in television commercials for the movie that opens July 10.

The Web site is inspired by the film's protagonist, school valedictorian Denis Cooverman, who proclaims his love for the hottest and most popular girl in school during his graduation speech. The film is based on the novel by Larry Doyle.

susan_boylepeople.jpg

Susan update: In the lightning-quick world of celebrity-slash-Internet fame in which we live, stories move quickly. That's certainly the case with Susan Boyle of "Britain's Got Talent" fame, who in the space of a few short weeks has gone from valiant underdog to overcovered media sensation to cursing diva to beleaguered basket case. (Well, at least that's what the British tabloids would have us believe. One has dubbed her "Ramboyle." I suspect that she's just a very nice lady under a lot of pressure.) Now People magazine is reporting that Boyle has gone into hiding in advance of her Saturday night appearance on the show. Judge Piers Morgan is suggesting that she might drop out, but others say she'll come through.

Bye-bye Gottschalks: Can you ever have too many Macys stores? Probably not, but Fresno will soon have another, this one at River Park. Nordstrom fans are sad.

Big storm: Mac, the dog who lives next door to me, howled at the thunder and lightning last night. I didn't like it, either. Maybe I'm part dog. Fresnobee.com is collecting reader pics of the storm. You can upload your pics here.

Am I the only one getting a kick out of the contrast happening in downtown Fresno this weekend? On one hand, there's motorcycle and music romp Fulton RevFest -- which is put on by the city, but is also heavy with KMJ sponsorship.

If I had to guess, I'd say the uber-conservative KMJ crowd probably isn't going to be a few blocks over at the Meet in the Middle 4 Equality, the state-wide gay rights rally at City Hall. It starts at 1 p.m. and is expected to draw a "at least a couple thousand people," including actress Charlize Theron.

I'm curious how many Fresnans will be going to both events. I'm planning to. I just hope the two sides don't meet in the middle -- say Eaton Plaza -- for a brawl.

LIF_TAO_MET_REOPENS_2.JPG

We all know the Fresno Metropolitan Museum is undergoing tough times. In fact, there's a pivotal deadline approaching. On June 1, the Met faces a bank deadline on which it has to repay the $15 million loan guaranteed by the city or possibly have its building and land foreclosed upon by the taxpayers. That's right, in less than 96 hours, Fresno could have a CITY-owned museum. And at this point, no one is sure what that museum will look like -- or what its vision will be. It's safe to say that the Met's senior executives are madly working at this very minute to form a business plan that is acceptable to the city. They say they haven't yet been able to share that vision because it's still being formulated.

Lots of turmoil, right? What I'm curious about as these frenzied hours tick down is what people in the community think. I know there are some who have never agreed with the museum's broad mission. They thought the focus on art, science and history hopelessly vague. Other folks I've talked to are mightily annoyed by how much money had to be spent fixing up a problematic old building that still does not feel like a comprehensive museum space.

So, as we at The Bee follow the bizarre event of a city suddenly finding itself the likely owner of a museum, I'd like to hear from regular folks. What do you think the Fresno Metropolitan Museum should be? What kinds of exhibitions should it feature? Should it drop any of the focus areas in its name -- art, science or history? Should the current museum administration and board retain its decision-making powers, or should the city bring in someone else?

Be sure to comment with a valid email address if you want your views represented in any resulting stories.

LIF_CEK_LOVE_AND_MARRIAGE1.JPG

In Friday's 7 section I have a condensed interview with Dede Nibler, music director of the senior show "New Wrinkles," which opens Friday at Fresno City College. Here's the entire interview:

Question: As music director and vocal coach, what have these past weeks been like for you?

Answer: I am available to the cast for special vocal sessions which, I hope, give them confidence and polish. I also work with the large and small choruses at the start of every rehearsal. Beyond that, I am part of the New Wrinkles Band - I play the bass part on many of the songs.

How many years have you been involved in "New Wrinkles"?

Director Fred Bologna and I started together in 2004 - this is our 6th season.

How does the show come together? Do people submit acts or routines? When did that process start?

The show began with the theme announcement, which is done at the show evaluation and cast party in June, the day after our last performance. By the end of August, individuals had responded to a query for acts, songs, dance routines, etc. Fred and I met more than several times to study the submitted acts and place them in a tentative order. We organized the show to fit the submissions. Participants received a letter telling them of their act in the show in October. Chorus music and learning CDs were handed out at a chorus rehearsal the end of October.

On Friday night I'll be at the opening of "New Wrinkles." Some Beehive readers might wonder why I spend so much time writing about this annual senior variety show. I'll give you a good reason: It's a genuine phenomenon in the Fresno area. We're talking about 17 shows -- starting Friday night and continuing through June 14 -- at the Fresno City College theater. And I'm betting that many of those performances will be sold out.

Until I saw "New Wrinkles" in person, in fact, I was pretty skeptical. How much fun could it be watching a bunch of 55-plus performers doing their thing on stage? But when I finally caught a performance, I understood. We're talking about striking a vein of pure performing-arts joy. Sure, there will always be some in the 75-member cast who might not be ready for Broadway. A strong voice might have faltered just slightly over the years; a toned leg might not leap quite as high as it once could. But there's such commitment, such enthusiasm, such exaltation in living that it's positively infectious. I wouldn't miss it.

This year's theme is "Love and Marriage: For Better, For Worse," and for the first-act finale the women in the cast gather for a massive wedding party.

I love reading New York Times trend pieces -- those authoritative, often slightly smug stories, usually set in hipper parts of the country, that practically shout "we knew about this before you did!" -- but I'm never sure just how accurate they are. The Times came out with a big trend piece yesterday about how hugging has become the high-school rage. Not hugging in a romantic sense, but in just saying hello or goodbye. Sarah Kershaw writes:

Girls embracing girls, girls embracing boys, boys embracing each other -- the hug has become the favorite social greeting when teenagers meet or part these days. Teachers joke about "one hour" and "six hour" hugs, saying that students hug one another all day as if they were separated for the entire summer.

One sociologist says the teenage embrace is more a reflection of the overall evolution of the American greeting, which has become less formal since the 1970s.

Interesting stuff, although as a non-teenager, I have no idea whether it's really happening in real life or if the Times just stumbled across a few affectionate schools. What say you, younger Beehive readers? Are you going hug crazy? What's next, everyone running around like the French kissing each other on the cheek?

berrylimeade.JPGUPDATE: So I finally got around to testing my cocktail theories.

After making four batches of the limeade on Saturday (yes, I broke down and bought an electronic juicer for the limes), I toted it to a barbecue contest, then to Mike Oz's casa for his wife's birthday party.

HMac and others were all too happy to drink with me, and after trying it with vodka, tequila and rum, we liked it ... plain.

We didn't get as fancy as Chowhound's cocktailqueen77, however. Check the comments for her recipe, then get yourselves some vodka, Lillet and Prosecco.

ORIGINAL POST: 'Hivers, I have a challenge that requires your expertise.

After fulfilling my promise to test Limón's strawberry limeade recipe, I downed a glass and thought, "Damn, this is good. And I bet alcohol would make it even better. Vodka? Or maybe rum?"

This is why I need you strawberry lovers. To play the game, get out the blender, reach into the liquor cabinet, and share a recipe or two in the comments.

Even without the alcohol, this limeade is my drink of choice for the remainder of strawberry season. After all, it's the perfect way to use those less-than-perfect berries. And it's a heck of a lot easier than making jam.

Limón's strawberry limeade
Makes 1/2 gallon

2 cups strawberry puree (from 1 pound hulled strawberries)
1 cup freshly squeezed lime juice (from about 8 limes)
5 cups water
1-11/2 cups sugar, depending on the sweetness of the strawberries

Mix all ingredients together in a pitcher. Chill and serve over ice.

Last week I had a cultural arts/tourism conference to speak at in Oakhurst, and on the way back I did one of my favorite things while in the area: stop at Timberline Gallery. This cooperative gallery is conveniently located on Highway 41 and boasts a strong lineup of mountain artists, including many of the big names that you'll find on the popular annual Sierra Art Trails open-house tour.

I bumped into local watercolorist Ronna Adler doing her gallery-sitting chores for Timberline, and she told me about the cooperative's newest idea: themed shows. The current show's theme is "Being Green," and a small room at the back of the gallery has been dedicated to whatever the member artists wanted to come up with.

I really liked this show, which runs through May 31. It feels fresh, spontaneous and fun. Some of the artists took the theme literally in terms of color. Others opted for views of nature. Though most of the individual pieces aren't purposely light-hearted, there's certainly a sense of whimsy at work here. I think it's a great idea to have a loose theme for a group show. The concept sparks creativity on the part of the artists and cohesion for the viewer. Upcoming theme shows are "Faces" (June/July) and "Birds of a Feather" (August/September).

Susan_Boyle_1390502c.jpg

There's no more "American Idol" to obsess over (or kick around) this week, but you can always try to substitute the drama of the Susan Boyle phenomenon. The New York Times has a fascinating piece on how difficult it's been for the promoters involved with Boyle's meteoric pop-culture rise to actually make that potential stardom pay off. They're working hard on it, but Brian Stelter writes that "the complexities of TV production are curbing the Web possibilities." It's one thing to get jillions of YouTube hits, it seems, but another to actually make money off becoming an overnight Web sensation:

She has already won a popularity contest on YouTube, where videos of her performances in April have been viewed an astounding 220 million times. But until now, her runaway Web success has made little money for the program's producers or distributors.

This made me stop and think: Would I actually buy a Susan Boyle album? I'm not sure. Her singing made for a highly emotional YouTube moment, but I can't decide if it's iPod worthy.

By the way: Here's the YouTube video of Boyle's semi-final performance singing "Memory" on "Britain's Got Talent."

Starting today, downtown barbecue joint Smokehouse is launching a new weekly concert series on Tuesdays.

It starts at 5:30 p.m. and ends at 7:30 p.m., so it's basically like happy hour, but instead it's being called "After-Work."

The goal is simple -- lure some of the downtown workers to stay downtown for a while by giving them something to do ... after work.

To start things off, Smokehouse has multi-instrumentalist David Hull. You might know him from Flywright or The Notones or perhaps from that viral video of his. Hull is an eclectic talent, so expect something apart from the norm tonight. He'll be playing a few different instruments and bringing some guests along.

From the Associated Press:

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) -- The California Supreme Court has upheld a voter-approved ban on same-sex marriage, but it also decided that the estimated 18,000 gay couples who tied the knot before the law took effect will stay wed.

The decision Tuesday rejected an argument by gay rights activists that the ban revised the California constitution's equal protection clause to such a dramatic degree that it first needed the Legislature's approval.

The announcement of the decision caused outcry among a sea of demonstrators who had gathered in front of the San Francisco courthouse awaiting the ruling.

Reminder: Fresno will be at the center of the gay rights fight this weekend, as Meet in the Middle for Equality rally is scheduled here. There's also a Day of Decision rally scheduled for 6 p.m. today at City Hall. More details here.

I like "The Wiz." I don't think it's the most polished show of the past year from Good Company because of some weaknesses in vocals and choreography, but this nicely directed production has a heart big enough to be divided amongst an army of appreciative Tin Men. The show has a warm, goofy sensibility that meshes nicely with the 1970s-tripped-out setting of this "Wizard of Oz" adaptation. I've seen shows set in the '70s that felt more like museum pieces than anything else -- look at those weird clothes people used to wear! -- but this "Wiz" doesn't gawk. It gently celebrates the flash and sparkle of an era.

When the original musical opened in the 1970s, it was one of the first shows on Broadway to feature an all-black cast. More folks today are probably familiar with the 1978 movie, in which an obviously too-old Diana Ross snagged the leading role of Dorothy, than the stage musical.

In terms of ethnicity, director Dan Pessano has opted for a more widely diverse approach to casting, and the impact is wonderful. Many of the leading roles are played by black actors, as it should be, but the overall impact is decidedly rainbow. It's a nice, bright, inclusive feeling.

News reports including the L.A. Times say that the California Supreme Court will issue its long-awaited decision on the validity of the state's same-sex marriage ban on Tuesday. That means that the long-planned "Meet in the Middle 4 Equality," the statewide gay rights rally scheduled to be held at Fresno City Hall on the Saturday following the Supreme Court ruling, will be coming May 30. The Meet in the Middle Web site has all the details.

Logistically speaking, I'm sure it's been a challenge to plan a statewide rally without knowing its exact date. I'm guessing that event organizers are relieved that it didn't end up on Memorial Day weekend. (Just think of the competition for hotels with Fresno State's commencement ceremonies.) This gives organizers a little more time to nail down the details on what they're hoping is a mammoth turnout.

(Thanks for the Beehive tip this morning, Stephen.)

hotdogsign2_crop.jpgTower Dogs, your sign next to the Tower Theatre's office is making me hungry.

Alas, we'll have to wait to get a taste of these specialty dogs. Co-owner Steve Duquette is waiting for city approval. He hopes to open the doors in early July.

For now, the owners are testing lots of different dogs. How do these sound to you?

  • The Last Call Dog: A Polish sausage topped with hash browns, a little squirt of ketchup, scrambled eggs and cheddar cheese. Meant for the crowd in the wee hours who'd like "breakfast on a bun," Duquette says.
  • The Caliente: A sausage spiked with habaneros and topped with nacho cheese sauce and cilantro. Jalapeños optional.
  • The California Dog: An all-beef hot dog topped with avocado, bacon, grilled onions and brown mustard.
  • The Mexican Dog: A Polish sausage topped with chorizo and nacho cheese sauce.

And for those who don't eat meat, there'll be a vegan hot dog topped with Thai peanut sauce.

Duquette and crew need more dogs, so leave your desires in the comments below. If your idea rocks, they just might name it after you.

Let's face it. Most local furniture commercials suck.

This weekend, if you're sitting in front of the TV for any period of time, you're going to be inundated with annoying commercials capitalizing on Memorial Day -- no interest! no payments! no money down! -- and they're going to make you want to throw things at your television.

This is a pretty typical Fresno furniture store commercial:

Booooring. This is not going to get me into the store to buy that ottoman I don't need. It needs something more. Maybe an old man in a mullet wig. And an exploding arm chair. And a drunk blond lady.

It should look more like the following commercial for Martin Fine Furniture in Indiana:

I'm still trying to wrap my brain around business reporter Bethany Clough's report in today's Bee that women's clothing retailer Forever 21 has its eye on a bunch of dying Gottschalks stores, including Fashion Fair and River Park. Isn't that like, say, a store the size of Radio Shack expanding into Circuit City? Are we really going to get stuck with THREE floors of bright-and-boppy mall-girl fashions targeted at "Twilight" fans? (Actually, Forever 21 says it'll add men's clothes as well.)

OK, I'll admit I've never been in Forever 21 except to take a shortcut through to the parking lot, but what I saw certainly didn't seem to fit the general-interest department-store bill to me. Three floors, two big Fresno stores? Something tells me that all those loyal little old lady-Gottschalks costumers who have been shopping there since 1684 or whenever the venerable chain was founded aren't going to find much to buy in its replacement.

Update 1 p.m.: Here's Bethany's news blog post on the subject.

Update 4 p.m.: Wow, stuff happens fast in the retail world. Bethany reports online that Forever 21 already has dropped its River Park plans. (Did you get to take a lunch break today, Bethany? What do you think will break by the end of the day -- that Sak's Fifth Avenue is moving to Fresno?)

Confession: I'm off today. Trying to get a nice almost-vacation like Memorial Weekend going. So I'm sorry to say there is no Post No Bills or Five Things today.

Rather than just ignoring one of the busiest weekends of the year, I'm going give you guys a few events that I think are pretty cool.

It's more than five, but not an entire Post No Bills. From there, I ask that all tell us what you got going on or what you've heard is going to be good.

Word of mouth rocks!

If you really need some guidance, last week's Post No Bills still has plenty of options for this weekend.

In the interest of making our community better, this is a rant.

Friday night, I met up with a friend for a drink at Veni Vedi Vici in the Tower District. It was our plan to sit on the patio and drink a couple of Stockholm Royales before heading over to Palomino's for Vintage Fridays featuring some local blogger. We were to be joined by two additional friends.

What happened instead was: I got to Veni's and ordered my drink at the bar, knowing how slim my chances were of getting prompt (or any) service on the patio. I carried my drink outside and found my friend sitting on a planter, as all tables were full. It was around 9:30.

We headed back inside to the far less than half-full restaurant, ordered a Stockholm for my friend, then made our way to a table in anticipation of the rest of our party joining us. Immediately, a guy in a tie rushed up and told us we couldn't have the table, as it was reserved for diners.

I explained there was four of us, and that the patio was full and the bar had just two available seats left. He said he was sorry. I asked if he would prefer we stood in the middle of the restaurant, drinking our drinks. He said again that there was nothing he could do about the table, but he'd keep an eye on the patio and let us know if anyone left.

Update: Kris Allen was named the 2009 American Idol.

Even though I have been an Adam Lambert fan all season, the outcome does not upset me. I think Adam is better off. He has the freedom to do the kind of glam rock he should. After seeing him perform with a medley with Kiss and "We Are The Champions" with Queen, there is no doubt in my mind he put out a hell of a rock album (and put on a wild rock show).

For Kris, there's mainstream rock radio just waiting to play that awful "No Boundaries" song. I feel bad for the guy ... let's hope all the negative feedback on the song sends the producers back to the studio for take 2 so Kris can put out a better first single. At least he's bound for better songs on the rest of his album. He is obviously a good musician.

And with that, I'm off on vacation. See you in a couple weeks.

idolfinal2.jpg

Original: The only thing that sticks out about the "American Idol" final showdown Tuesday night is how SUCKY that final song was (co-written by judge Kara).

I thought the reason I hated (either version) of the song, "No Boundaries," was because I watched the show at 12:30 a.m., after the No Doubt concert, and was a bit tired. Then, this morning, I listened again. Yikes! It was worse than I thought. It makes me want to gag.

It's a shame that season filled with interesting contestants, who seem to have so much more musical talent than singers in past years, get stuck singing (and having to release as a first single) one of the worst songs EVER in the history of this show. I bet Kelly Clarkson, Carrie Underwood and David Cook are thanking their lucky stars they didn't get stuck with such a dud.

I actually think the person who loses tonight gets off with a better deal -- not having to release that crappy song. I'm actually rooting for my favorite, Adam Lambert, not to win.

To me, the show overall was a let down. It really didn't change any minds. Adam fans remained fans (though, I thought he was subdued last night and wanted to see a more flamboyant performance); and Kris Allen fans got a good dose of the soft contemporary rocker (I thought he performed the best he had all season). In the end, it felt like a tie. Kris winning round 1, Adam round 2. We will just forget that horrible last song they both were subjected to singing.

What did you think? Any predictions for tonight?

A friend sent me a text message during the final five minutes of Fox TV's sneak peek last week of "Glee," an upcoming series about high school show choirs: "It's like they tailored a show just for you. Could only be a better match if they were in band."

My friend was right. I warmed to "Glee" right away, and not just because I use Tivo to record "Family Guy" so I can watch the production numbers more than one time. Cute, charming and amusingly adept at replicating what the requisite Iron Lady cheerleading-squad adviser on the show calls the "high school caste system," the first episode sparkled with silly promise.

It's great to see Matthew Morrison, who plays the idealistic glee-club adviser, make an endearing transition from Broadway to TV. (He played the original Link in "Hairspray" and Fabricio in "The Light in the Piazza." And it was fun to watch Clovis East High School grad Chris Colfer, a former member of the Good Company Players Junior Company, do his thing. I'm sure that his character will get more screen time and a better story arc in upcoming episodes.

My prediction: Enrollment in show choirs across the country will explode. Now if we can only get a good TV series set amongst the steamy intrigue and heart-pounding drama of high-school marching band.

Did anyone else watch "Glee"? Any thoughts?

"The End of the Line" caused some buzz last week at the Monterey Bay Aquarium, where chefs joined scientists and fishermen to discuss overfishing and problems with fish farms. (OK, we also ate a lot of food and drank a lot of wine.)

Anyway, Charles Clover, author of the book that inspired the movie, says he welcomes screenings of the film.

Relapse_(album).jpg

I can't say I knew anyone who was feverishly awaiting today's release of "Relapse," Eminem's return album. And that's pretty sad, when you think about it.

Here's a guy with enough talent that he was on his way to being the greatest rapper we'd ever seen -- then he let go of it for silly voices, pseudo thug moments and meaningless beefs.

Truth is, I got "Relapse" a couple weeks ago. Listened to it once, haven't gone back since. It's obvious Eminem can still rap -- just listen to the patterns and flow on "Underground" and "My Mom" -- but his subject matter is pretty played out, he won't stop rapping in those stupid voices and his hooks are horrible. The best songs are "My Mom" and the very honest "Beautiful." Other than that ... meh.

I will, of course, hear arguments to the contrary. Anyone?

Oh, and BTW: New Green Day >>>> New Eminem.

Over at The Bee's opinion blog, my colleagues aren't getting much more than a gurgle of interest about the statewide election. (And that's from a target demographic supposedly obsessed with the issue.) Fresnobee.com reports that turnout so far is "very low." Here on the Beehive, we're much more interested in the news that Kirk Vartanian is the newest investor in Granite Park and that Kim Kardashian will be making a $100 a ticket appearance there. (Sure, our state government's budget is in such grim shape that we'll soon be paying police officers in apples, but at least Fresno will have 175 different kinds of vodka!)

I'm certainly not excited about this election, but I believe it's my duty to vote, so I will. A word of warning: It seems that some polling places have changed from their usual locations. I didn't realize this until I used fresnobee.com's handy polling place finder and learned that I'm going to have to hop in the car to get to Clinton & Fruit rather than do my traditional Tower District walk-and-vote thing. So check ahead.

Tonight's your final chance to dial in votes for the next "American Idol," Kris Allen, the humble musician, faces Adam Lambert, the flashy showman.

If you're interested in knowing what songs the contestants will sing, and lots of other details about the next two nights, check out this blog, which seems to be the best one out there for getting the spoilers.

The buzz is that Adam is a shoe-in, the declared front-runner. Though I don't really get how anyone got to that point, since he was in the bottom two (and Kris was not) a few weeks back. When Ryan Seacrest said last week there were 1 million votes separating the two, people assumed Adam was in the lead. It is possible Kris is the front runner.

Kris has Vote For the Worst behind him, even though the bloggers there seem to hate Adam more (so confusing).

I've been an Adam fan all along. I like the screeching and theatrics. It's a flashback to glam rock at its best. I find Kris tolerable, and I do believe he would get airplay on adult contemporary radio. But, I like flashy, out-there performers, people who make it hard to forget them. (In fact, I will be at No Doubt's concert tonight, recording AI and watching it when I get home.) Adam does that.

So, who do you think the "American Idol" should be?

scrubs.JPGABC and NBC have just announced their 2009-2010 schedules. ABC is being very aggressive with 11 new programs. And, they have hired some veteran actors to star in those shows such as Courtney Cox, Kelsey Grammer, Patricia Heaton and Ed O'Neil. Those actors did not come cheap.
NBC's fall schedule shows just how cheap a network can be run. Only three of seven new shows start in the fall. The low number of new shows were needed because Jay Leno is taking over the 10 p.m. weeknight slot.

I like Leno. But, this move is just a way for the network to save money. It will cost the same to produce a week of Leno's new show as it would have cost to produce one hour of a drama. And the "SNL Weekend Update" show is just a way for NBC to get another cheap prime-time show.

NBC continues to depend on the financial kindness of others. DirecTV is footing the bill again for new episodes of "Friday Night Lights." And Subway has stepped up to save "Chuck." What next? "The Office" brought to you by OfficeMax.

Here's a few other thoughts about today's announcements.

Multiple choice: What is being depicted in the following photo?

STOMP_MICHEYEV.JPG

A) a peculiar torture found in the Greek underworld, along the lines of Sisyphus perpetually rolling a stone uphill, this one involving three men with the world's most egregious body odor being strapped for an eternity to vats of industrial-strength deodorant but never getting to use it.

B) a footwear style soon to be favored by Kathy Mahan, our resident shoe addict, whose dream is to own the highest heel she can possibly find.

C) what the "Harry Potter" cast, wands in hand, will look like by the time the final movie comes out. (Hermione hasn't been aging well.)

D) a promo shot for the national touring company of "Stomp," which comes Tuesday to the Saroyan Theatre for a two-night run.

If you picked "Stomp," you're right, of course. This show, which uses trashcans, tea chests, plastic bags, plungers, boots, and hubcaps to fill the stage with compelling and infectious rhythms, just keeps going. After recently celebrating its 12th anniversary, "Stomp" continues with two productions overseas (a permanent London company and a European tour), a permanent New York gig and a national tour.

I can recall seeing "Stomp" in Fresno twice, which is my limit, I think. Yes, the show is clever, and the performers are adept and crowd-savvy, but it's hard for me to keep going back to a production that doesn't have a storyline. But "Stomp" obviously keeps drawing in fans. (And more power to them.) For any "Stomp" experts who go to one of the Fresno shows, let me know if the production has changed at all in 12 years. Have any routines been added or replaced?

BIZ CEK GRANITE PARK1.JPG

Splashed across the front page of The Bee today -- with a headline reading "A bit of Las Vegas in Fresno" -- was news that local businessman Kirk Vartanian is the newest investor in Granite Park.

His first order of business is taking the former Cabo Wabo space and turning it into a Vegas-style nightclub called The Edge.

You can read the whole story on fresnobee.com. Some of the interesting tidbits include:

  • The club is scheduled to open in 30 to 45 days.
  • A visit from Kim Kardashian is scheduled for June 16. Tickets will cost $100.
  • The club will close at 5 a.m. on Fridays and Saturdays.
  • It will stock champagne ranging in price from $100-$40,000 per bottle.
  • If all goes well, Vartanian says he'll open long-awaited Granite Park restaurants Memphis Blues and Red next.
  • He also wants to open at dry nightclub for the 18-21 crowd.

We've been here before, haven't we? Lots of cool-sounding ideas, promises of celebrities and hopes of creating a nightlife destination. Now we wait to see if it will really happen this time.

bumba.jpg

In my May 17 Sunday Spotlight column I write about Barbara Van Arnam's new exhibit at Gallery 25. "Sacred Wisdom: African Myths and Folk Tales," which runs through May 31, features 20 paintings by Van Arnam that she prepared for a show for a gallery in Ghana. That exhibit fell through, unfortunately, but she was able to regroup the show for Gallery 25.

An interesting (and unavoidable) fact about the show is that Van Arnam, an accomplished artist, is of Nordic descent, which means that she's a white artist painting African themes. (In fact, one of the stories that she depicts, a creation myth titled "Bumba Creates the World," shown above, includes one white figure spewed out by the creator along with eight blacks. I thought it made an apt metaphor for the show.) I wasn't sure what to make of the artist's race. In my column I write:

I'll be honest here. I walked into the show slightly leery of the artist's relationship to the material. Do we really need, I wondered, a show devoted to African art painted by a non-African? Doesn't that suggest an outsider, missionary-zeal, colonizing mentality? All sorts of gentle multicultural alarm bells started ringing inside my head. But as I immersed myself in Van Arnam's vision, I found myself rapidly appreciating her commitment and connection to the material.

Looking back, I admit that I struggled a little with this show. Was my initial reaction of being wary in the interest of diversity too narrow-minded? Or did my ensuing positive reaction mean that I fell too easily for the quality of the art and not the context? Or, did I let the issue of race overwhelm a discussion that should have been colorblind in the first place? In answer to all these questions: I'm still not sure. I do know that I haven't heard from anyone offended. Two things are for sure: 1) I like art that makes me think, and this certainly fits the bill; and 2) I wanted to share some more works from the show in color.

2103-angels-demons-movie-poster.jpg

One thing you've gotta love about Catholics is the seriousness with which they dish out ritual. All that pomp and ceremony, all the majesty of Vatican City, all that gorgeous art and those golden treasures -- it's a visual and dramatic feast. Movie directors especially love the Catholic theme. Can you imagine if Ron Howard had been forced to set his "Angels & Demons" at the national headquarters of the Assemblies of God, say, or in the world's biggest Presbyterian social hall? Just think of Tom Hanks running from one bland building to another doused in fluorescent lights, trotting past 3rd grade bulletin-board depictions of burning bushes, bumping into storage racks filled with folding metal chairs, pausing every now and then in slightly musty linoleum-lined hallways adorned with fliers begging people to join the choir. Instead of the Illuminati, the shadowy evil group in the narrative would have to be the 7 p.m. Wednesday meeting of Weight Watchers.

Still, as much as I thrill to some good, old-fashioned Catholic-ritual storyboarding, I reached my limit about half an hour into the silly "Angels & Demons." (You can read my less-than-appreciative Bee review here.) Even all those gorgeous shots of the big group of blood-red-robed cardinals, set against the murky Vatican backdrops like exotic game birds, got tiring after a while. Yes, Catholic iconography often adds a powerful punch to a movie -- from the crisp, retro repression of a "Doubt" to the head-spinning fright of an "Exorcist" -- but in "Angels" it just sort of floods over you until you're gasping for air.

Anyway, "Angels & Demons" managed to confess to $48 million at the box office to land the No. 1 spot. (It was not as good as the $77.1 million opening weekend for its parent film, "The Da Vinci Code," however.) Did you see the movie? What do Catholic -- AND non-Catholic -- viewers think?

Fresno got a shout out on last night's episode of the AMC meth-cooking drama "Breaking Bad."

Unfortunately, I'm a few episodes behind, so I can't tell you what exactly was said. Luckily, other people sent me info on such things.

From Famous alum Bryan Zera:

breaking bad mentioned Fresno. That's where Badger, the drug dealer, is laying low

Adds Bee copy editor Marty:

A drug dealer got killed, and one of the main characters couldn't bring himself to go to the funeral - a buddy called to ask where he was, and said, "So-and-so even came from Fresno!"

Another cool "Breaking Bad" meets Fresno link (that I just discovered this morning): Fresno woman Jane Parsons is one of the finalists in a make-your-own-video contest put on by AMC. The winner gets a part in the show. Voting, however, ends this afternoon.

Here's a look back at my weekend. Did you do anything good? Spill it in the comments.

FRIDAY
- It was my fourth Vintage Fridays night at Palomino's, which was good times. Thanks to all the awesome Fresnans who came out. More thanks to the ones who braved the heat to hit the dancefloor. People who preferred to chill on the patio, I understand.

SATURDAY
- I played in councilmember Mike Dages' annual "Flop Til You Drop" charity poker tournament at Club One Casino. Last year I was the first one out at my table. This year, I did much better. I won a few big hands in the beginning and held on to make it to the final three tables. More than $19,000 was raised for various charities.

101glee_sc-8_3277_f.JPGThere's good news for Clovis East graduate Chris Colfer. Even before the first episode of his Fox series "Glee" has aired, the network has put the show on its 2009-2010 lineup. The Fox schedule for the next television year was announced Monday. The other networks will make similar announcements this week.

Along with "Glee," the Ryan Murphy series about a ragtag Glee Club, the new Fox shows include:
"The Cleveland Show": Animated offering from the producers of "Family Guy."
"Brothers": Comedy starring Michael Strahan ("Fox NFL Sunday") and Daryl "Chill" Mitchell ("Ed"). A former NFL star returns home to his mother's house to get his life back on track.
"The Human Target": Mark Valley stars in the action series based on the DC Comics graphic novel. It launches Jan. 17.
"Past Life": Kelli Giddish and Nicholas Bishop deal with mysteries that must be solved in both the past and present.
"Sons of Tucson": A schemer (Tyler Labine) is hired to impersonate the father of three brothers whose father is in jail.

The network also announced the late-night talk program "The Wanda Sykes Show" will begin at 11 p.m. Nov. 7. That Saturday time slot became available when Fox canceled "MadTV."

Sadly, I failed the Mr. Belding test last night. I tracked him down for "Saved by the Bell" trivia (which he owned - seriously dude is a beast), but my video camera lost all the footage. He even knew the jukebox number at for Zack & Kelly's song. *sad face*

To make it up to you Beehivers, I offer you the five tightest people I saw last night at Mad Tight '90s Night at The Chuk. Yes, the '90s were in full swing, and I definitely got a kick out of the some of people who dressed up. Shout out to unbuckled overalls.

Mike Oz gave you some great options, and I fall to my knees on a towel and praise the heavens that none of his picks involve 1) parolees; 2) hats; or 3) transmission of the H1N1 virus. Here are a few more weekend suggestions from the arts/culture side of the aisle:

LISTEN TO OPERA IN A MAGNIFICENT CHURCH: The Fresno Grand Opera's annual "Opera on Van Ness" concert features "opera's biggest hits along with the greatest of classical melodies sung by the Fresno Grand Opera Chorus and Soloists." 5 p.m. Sunday, First Congregational Church, 2131 N. I'm not surprised that there are lots of product spin-offs from "Star Trek," I expected new dolls, phasers and enterprise toys. But I didn't see these products coming:

klingon.jpg"Star Trek" Klingon Language Suite application for Apple's iPhone, which combines The Klingon Dictionary, Conversational Klingon and the new Klingon Phrasebook so you can study the language and, apparently, check your phrasing to help avoid any embarrassing moments (like there could be anything more embarrassing than learning a fake language?). The cost: $11.99 for the whole suite; or if you buy each piece separately, the phrasebook is 99 cents, Conversational Klingon is $3.99 and the dictionary is $9.99.

startrekAWSide.jpgThen there's these shoes from CBS Consumer Products, created by designer jeffstaple. The "Star Trek" inspired high-top, "Terrain Enterprise Edition," is a limited-edition Airwalk sneaker with the iconic Enterprise badge and ship number. Only 160 pairs have been made; each pair will be numbered. You can get them at jeffstaple's retail shop in New York City or ordering through 212-253-0588. Cost: $80 per adult pair/$60 per kids pair.

I can't wait to see what other wacky movie products come out this summer.

This news update from The Bee is a hoot. Even the headline -- Towering parolee arrested after Fresno eatery rampage -- is funny. Behold:

A 6-foot, 7-inch parolee out of prison for just four days is back in jail after an early morning restaurant rampage in north Fresno.

Sgt. Mike Manfredi said police were called at 3 a.m. Thursday to the Denny's at Blackstone and Herndon avenues, where the parolee was eating food off patrons' plates.

When he was asked to stop, the parolee began spitting and knocking hats off customers' heads, Manfredi said. When asked to leave, he threatened to poke the manager's eyes out.

Outside the restaurant, the parolee put a motorcyclist in a choke hold, pulled him off the motorcycle and tried to ride away on it, Manfredi said. When he was ordered off the motorcycle by an arriving police officer, he rolled the motorcycle at her.

It's already Thursday, which means I'm WAY behind on writing this post. Beehiver Blake on Monday attached a nice comment to my unrelated tidbit about Joan Rivers winning "Celebrity Apprentice." (Yep, definitely the most culturally sophisticated thing I wrote all week.) Blake wrote:

I sure thought that article on the Texas town in Sunday's Spotlight section was super cool. (sorry, off-subject, but folks should really dig it out, if they still have yesterday's paper around.)

Thanks, Blake. That would be my Sunday Spotlight column on the peculiar little town of Marfa, Texas, population 2,000, which I visited on my recent vacation. It's a vibrant, bustling arts community that reminded me that you don't have to live in a big city to find an artsy feel.

Anyway, I wanted to share my photo in color of the art installation "Prada, Marfa," above, which ran in a black and white version in the print edition of the paper, plus a few other shots of mine that I took in Marfa. You can find those additional photos after the break.

I talked to developer Milt Barbis the other day to get the scoop on this weekend's Oyster Festival at Granite Park and the newly renovated Grace O'Malley's Public House.

Perhaps the most interesting part of the festival, considering the economy, is that thousands of free tickets are being handed out for Saturday's festival, which features a headlining performance by The Young Dubliners.

All you have to do to get a free ticket is go into Public House today or Friday.

The goal, Barbis says, is for people to get re-familiar with Granite Park, or maybe wash away any bad memories they might have.

The festival goes all day, with food, dancers, live music and more. It starts at 11 a.m. Tickets cost $15, so if you want to go, might as well grab some free tickets.

For all that the success of Hollywood favorite "Slumdog Millionaire" was supposed to do for increased public awareness of poverty in India, it seems that at least one young star of the film is still struggling. The New York Times ArtsBeat blog reports that Mumbai municipal workers on Thursday demolished the home of Azharuddin Mohammed Ismai, shown bottom left in this New York Times photo, one of the young children who starred in the rags-to-riches tale. From the Times:

[Local authorities] said they were following orders to clear illegally built shanties ahead of the monsoon season. Such demolitions are common in Mumbai, which has a chronic housing shortage and where ramshackle dwellings can spring up virtually overnight on sidewalks and other empty scraps of land.
The child star was asleep when a police officer woke him up and told him to leave his family's home, he told The Associated Press in an interview.

What about the idea of these young actors sharing in the wealth after being an integral part of a best-picture winner? The movie's makers have set up trust funds for the young actors that they will have access at age 18. Here's hoping they'll have a place to sleep till then.

And just think about all the money that the studio spent transporting them to the Oscars.

Scientists have found what may be the oldest recorded sculpture of a human figure. Found in the Hohle Fels Cave in Germany, the 35,000-year old figurine is being called the German Venus because it portrays a woman with "huge breasts, big buttocks and exaggerated genitals." And no head, apparently:

_45768279_venus_jesen_466.jpg

The oldest sculpture of a human is a naked chick with no head? Of course it is. Human beings have been freaks since the beginning of time.

At least you can rest easy knowing those naked pictures of you floating around on the Internet are porn today, but in 35,000 years, they'll be art. So smile pretty.

Original: Phew ... I've had one heck of a busy day, so I just got around to posting my weekly take on "American Idol."

Let me start off with how annoying all the judges bickering was. I wish Kara and Paula would be quiet, and just let Simon say what he thinks. I don't care if they disagree with him (or each other).

Beyond that, I felt like the night was what I expected: Adam is clearly WAY better than the other two; Kris was fantastic on one song and average on the other; Danny is dull, but keeps getting praise.

I'm really hoping my prayers to the music gods are answered and Danny Gokey is sent packing. All I can think about when he sings is how dull he is and how unlikely a star he will really be.

Here's my take on last night's double-shot from each performer:

herossign.jpg

I saw this the other night before the Swede Fest and it confounded my brain. The sign points people to a parking lot that Hero's customers can use on Mono Street, a couple blocks from the restaurant. I'd never seen it before, so the sign has to be kinda new. So why is it so tattered and beaten? It's like it came from Paris Hilton's laundry basket.

With the anemic comedy "Laughing Stock," Fresno State's theater department does not end its season on a strong note. (The show continues 8 p.m. today-Saturday.) You know you're in trouble when the actors seem to be having more fun than the audience.

I think of it this way: The bar has been set pretty high for hilarious backstage farces. With the top-notch "Noises Offs" and "Moons over Buffalo" of the theater world setting the standard, it's hard to try to break through in the genre with something as middling as "Laughing Stock." Playwright Charles Morey might manage to spark up a few laughs in his portrayal of a struggling New Hampshire summer theater company, but those laughs are pretty much smothered by a lengthy, clunky, overly sentimental script and too much insider humor.

Director Kathleen McKinley does what she can with the material, and her hard-working cast tries to ratchet up the comic intensity. But McKinley's direction seems listless at times, and she can't overcome the sluggishness of the story, in which Morey rather audaciously tries to cram an entire summer-stock-season into the proceedings.

house_f.JPGYou wouldn't know the economy was in the toilet by looking at the Web site charitybuzz.com. Thousands of dollars are being bid on celebrity items with the proceeds to go to a variety of good causes.

There's big money being tossed around. Take for example the fund-raising efforts for the Robert F. Kennedy Center Auction 2009. The money goes to the RFK Center for Justice and Human Rights, a non-profit international human rights advocacy group founded by the friends and family of Robert Kennedy to carry on his legacy.

"House" star Hugh Laurie has put his character Dr. Gregory House's cane up for auction. The current bid for the cane and set visit is $20,500. In addition to the signed cane, the winner gets to meet Laurie and the rest of the cast.

If you are interested in bidding, the next minimum bid is $23,000.

That would put it close, but not past, the top bid to meet Oprah Winfrey backstage. That's at $27,000. That is almost 10 times what you have to bid to be in the running for lemonade and cookies after Martha Stewart guides you through her garden.

There are some bargains. Lunch with "Project Runway"'s Tim Gunn at Bryant Park Grill is only at $425. The top bid for a dance lesson from "Dancing with the Stars" Contestant Jason Taylor is at $500.

Here's the best deal of the lot. Gloria Ruben, star of "Raising the Bar" on TNT, will sing for you and your guests at your next cocktail party. The top bid is $175.

The RFK Center's annual online auction is up through May 28.

Greater_Tuna_logo_rev_copy.JPG

Here's a mid-week treat for theater lovers: a nationally touring version of the well-known show "Greater Tuna" stops in Fresno at the Tower Theatre Wednesday for one night only. One thing that sets this production apart is that it's directed by Ed Howard, one of the original writers of "Tuna," which has played in community theaters across the country and spawned its own set of sequels. Here's an extended version of an interview with actor Jef Holbrook that appears in Tuesday's Life section.

Question: How long have you been touring "Greater Tuna"?

Answer: We've been touring "Greater Tuna" since March of this year. Oddly enough, we actually toured the sequel, "A Tuna Christmas," first. "Christmas" toured from October through December of 2008. Doing the sequel first gave an interesting insight into the characters as they exist in the original. While both shows have a similar structure, we simply know more about each character by the time Christmas happens. Topher [Payne, his fellow cast member in the two-person show] and I both took what we learned about the characters in the second play to inform our work in Greater Tuna. So, I think doing the sequel first gave us a real advantage towards fleshing out the original play.

murphygoode.JPGBy now, lots of wine lovers know that Murphy-Goode Winery in Healdsburg is offering a dream job as a wine country lifestyle correspondent.

The six-month job goes something like this: Drink lots of wine, then Twitter about it. Drink more wine, then blog about it. Drink yet more wine, and post videos of yourself, glass in hand, on YouTube.

Oh, yeah, you'll have other duties, such as checking out picnic spots throughout Sonoma County and chatting up visitors in Murphy-Goode's tasting room.

Did I mention that you get paid $10,000 a month for this lifestyle? And housing is included?

There's lots of competition for the job, but so far, I'm not that impressed. Check out the applicants' videos and ask yourself: Do any of these pitchmen (and women) compel you to buy wine?

If you know you could do a better job, submit your applications and videos by June 5.

In the end, it may be the search itself that gets the most splash for Murphy-Goode. It's a great publicity stunt -- especially in a tight economy.

Whew. I'm still recovering:

Friday: I caught the next to the last performance of Theatre Ventoux's ambitious "Anastasia Trials" at the Severance Theatre. This fascinating and complex play about a radical feminist theater company was well cast by director Lisa Taber and featured some strong performances, including Jessica Rose Knotts, Cindy Freeland, Alissa Cummings and Suzanne Grazyna. There was a lot I liked about the evening, from the play's gentle parody of feminist orthodoxy to its rousing and emotional declaration of sisterhood. But there was clunkiness as well as this backstage drama segued into a sometimes rambling "play within a play" that never quite sharpened its dramatic focus or lived up to its comic potential. I don't think that the play's impact matched playwright Carolyn Gage's ambition, but then again, I'm a man, right? And my name, as local critic, was actually part of the show, as in joking that I wouldn't get it anyway. How's that for inviting the male gaze?

Saturday morning: I helped lead a tour of downtown murals -- based on a Fresno Bee 7 section cover story from last year -- as part of the San Joaquin River Parkway and Conservation Trust "Parties for the Parkway" program. Beloved Beehive alum Felicia Matlosz joined me along with Creative Fresno rep Donovan Byrn and local muralist Ramiro Martinez. (See photo above.) Great fun! Check out a bunch more mural pics after the break. And check out the Parkway's list of upcoming parties. They can be a blast.

Saturday evening:
Time for a big, walloping dose of Bruckner, as the Fresno Philharmonic for the first time unleashed the composer's Symphony No. 6 on a local audience. I loved the power of the music, and particularly enjoyed watching the brass strut their stuff. Pianist Orion Weiss was a highlight, too, with his Schumann's Piano Concerto in A minor.

Sunday afternoon: I caught the matinee of Fresno State's "Laughing Stock," directed by Kathleen McKinley. The comedy continues 8 p.m. Tuesday-Saturday at the John Wright Theatre. I'll post my review tomorrow. (A preview: It's not favorable, alas.)

Anyone else have a notable weekend?

Audie's Olympic will be serving up a little bit of Americana soul tonight, as Sista Otis comes to town. She's from Detroit, so she's got a hint of soul to mix with rootsy folk rock. I dig her track "Rolling Stone," which you can listen to below.

Tommy Delgado is starting things off on the solo tip. The rumor around town is that his band, Fresno faves The Same Shape, broke up last week. When I asked him, he compared to the situation to "burnt hair" and said he'd keep me posted. Hmmm. We'll have to wait and see about that one.

Showtime is 9 p.m. I'm not sure what the cover is, probably $5-$7, if I had to guess.

As if I wasn't excited enough about the reboot of "Punch Out!!" for the Wii, today I got sent this teaser for the game. Not only is it pretty awesome, but they cast my man Clay Davis from "The Wire" to play Little Mac's trainer, Doc Louis.

Perfect! It almost makes up for not having Mike Tyson around. The game drops May 18.

OK, fess up: How many of us were strung along for a marathon three hours last night waiting to see if Joan Rivers would be the new Celebrity Apprentice?

(Slowly and sheepishly, I raise my hand, all the while insisting that I had my laptop computer busy all night answering emails and organizing photos and reading the latest New York Times stories about the faltering Tamil Tigers in Sri Lanka. But, hey, let's face it, I'll never get that prime-time chunk of minutes back. I could have driven to San Francisco in the time that NBC took dribbling out the result.)

Rivers beat out poker player Annie Duke, who provided one of the show's moments of high drama when she wished death on her extravagantly preserved opponent. (Rivers' face these days reminds me of a completely renovated boutique hotel.) But the poker player couldn't compete with the tartness of Rivers, whose famous rant about Duke's Las Vegas roots ("I've met your people in Vegas for 40 years and none of them have last names") has already achieved insult immortality.

I'm one of those johnny-come-latelys to this "Celebrity Apprentice" feud -- exactly the kind of viewer that NBC was hoping to snag with its puffed-up, padded-out three-hour event -- so I can't really speak to which of these two women "deserved" to win. What do people think? Should Joan have gotten the prize?

Behold, the power of YouTube. If not for YouTube, how else would we be able to watch a professional bowling event from 1979 that took place at Fresno's Cedar Lanes? The Fresno Open was a nationally televised and everything.

Yeah, I don't care much to watch people bowl either (unless it's on the Wii), but these videos are great, if only for the '70s outfits and facial hair. Special shout out to Guppy Troupe, who has to be both the most stylish and best-named professional bowler ever.

Justin Timberlake on "SNL" + inappropriate suggestions - a box with a whole in it = a golden delicious Mother's Day gift you probably don't want to share with your mom.

Unless you're Shia "If I could meet my mother and marry her I would" LeBeouf, in which case you should probably seek immediate death help.

DONALD WRITES:
Kathy, you and I are both big "Star Trek" fans, and I know that both of us found a lot to like about the new movie. But there are two major things that I really hate about this version of "Star Trek." And I'm ready to tangle with you about them. Both involve aspects of the plot that I don't want to give away to people who haven't yet made it out to see the movie (but, come on, what kind of "fan" could you be if it's Friday afternoon and you still haven't caught a screening), so consider this a spoiler alert, readers. (REPEAT: SPOILER ALERT.) We'll discuss the specifics after the break. How does that sound, Kathy?

KATHY WRITES:
Donald, you may be geekier than me, since you told me you once owned a phaser (snicker, snicker), and maybe that is why you are being so nit-picky about the plot. What's not to like, J.J. Abrams and the writers created a clean slate with this action-packed, exhilarating drama?

The Fresno Metropolitan Museum on Thursday awarded "mini grants" ranging from $500-$1,000 to nine Fresno County science teachers. Cheers to the folks who are on the front lines every day educating our kids. Here's the smiling bunch:

Back Row (left to right): Stephen Bock, Co-Director Fresno County Office of Education; Mary Funk, Burrel Elementary School; Reed Schneider, Sierra Outdoor School; David Greenmeyer, Computech Middle School; Steven Harness, Kingsburg High School; Paul Gottlieb, President of the Board of Trustees, Fresno Metropolitan Museum. Front Row (left to right): Betsy Reeves, Chairperson of the Board of Trustees, Fresno Metropolitan Museum; Stephanie Chavez, Washington Union High School; Paul Magill, Fowler High School; Kimberly Calderon, John Sutter Middle School; Julie Hamilton, Buchanan High School; Katrina Williams, Harvest Elementary School.

After the break: Descriptions of the winning grants. Plus: a film at the Fresno Center for Nonviolence, an obit of artist Dennis Gallagher, an Ansel Adams display at Fresno State's new library, and is there a chance for a direct Amtrak train from Fresno to San Francisco?

We've been reading about The Fresno Metropolitan Museum's financial woes for months. I think I've discovered what The Met needs: A boy wizard.

This exhibit
, at the Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago, looks at the "artistry and craftsmanship" for creating the "Harry Potter" films. It opened April 30, to tons of screaming kids, and runs through September.

I know, it seems big. But why think small. The Met needs an exhibit with a little more excitement than this one going on through June, which, it appears, couldn't even get these red-hat wearing ladies to crack a smile:

met.jpg

The Met has made strides to reach a broader audience by adding food-related events, such as the Science of Wine Series, but exhibits with a little more zing -- and broad appeal that introduces kids to the arts -- may do more to boost ticket sales.

Tonight Fresno Filmworks will show the film "Two Lovers" at 5:30 and 8 p.m. at the Tower Theatre. This is notable for two reasons:

1. Fresno Filmworks rules.
2. This is the last movie Joaquin Phoenix made before he flew over the cuckoo's nest.

So, if you want to remember Joaquin Phoenix the way he was (read: hot and sane), get yourself down to the Tower Theatre tonight. And don't be mad at me when I run up to the stage, start up my portable boombox, and start free-styling about how awesome drugs are and showers aren't. That's just me doing my thing, yo.

A certain Fresno Beehive blogger with an affection for tacos has a particularly milestone-ish birthday coming up this year. He has a fantastic wife, a nice house, a cute dog, a job ... what more could the man possibly want?

Answer: a wallet that looks like a taco. A taco wallet. It's shaped like a taco and meant to carry money, but I like to think it's shaped like a taco and meant to carry tacos.

STAR_TREK.JPGIt should be obvious from my reviews of "Star Trek," both in the Fresno Bee and online, that I really enjoyed the movie. And this is coming from a guy who remembers when the original series launched.

Now, it is your turn. Send me your short - and please keep them short - review of the film. Did you like the way the Enterprise looks? Was Chris Pine the right choice for Kirk? What is your reaction to the major plotline change (and you know what I mean)?

I'll sweeten the pot. Paramount Home video is releasing a couple of DVDS next week: "The Best of Star Trek: The Original Series" and "The Best of Star Trek: The Next Generation." Each DVD includes four episodes and they are some of the best. "The City on the Edge of Forever" is on the original series DVD while both parts of "The Best of Both Worlds" is on the other DVD.

Here's how you can win one of the DVDs. All you have to do is tell me where you can see a Tribble in the new "Star Trek" movie. Winners will be selected through a random drawing of those who spot the furry creature.

Please note: Comments will not be approved until the contest ends.

One more thing. Be sure to take a look at the web package we have created at http://www.fresnobee.com/static/2009/entertainment/startrek/. It includes everything from cast interviews to a very fun Easter egg.

In Friday's 7 section I have an interview with Fresno Philharmonic conductor Theodore Kuchar about this weekend's concert with pianist Orion Weiss, the final Saroyan performance of the season. (There's also a Pops concert coming up in June at Woodward Park.) There's no doubt it's been a challenging economic season for the Fresno Philharmonic -- and for all orchestras in the U.S. I talked to Phil executive director Don Reinhold for both a financial and artistic recap.

How would you assess this past season?

Artistically, it's been a home run. One great concert after another. It's hard to pick out any one highlight, but certainly Sarah Chang's performance is memorable, and the performance of Elgar's Violin Concerto that Ted and Corey Cerovsek teamed up on last month was a brilliant performance of a work that's not as well known by the public. Same goes for the Walton Symphony we heard in November.

One would wish that more people would recognize and support this artistic gem in Fresno. Therein lies the rub of the financial condition. In Fresno, like elsewhere, the cultural non-profits tend to live on the edge, beloved and supported by a relatively small group of people. There are still two months left in our fiscal year, so the verdict is still out; but we're not across home plate yet, so to speak.

cat_fight.jpg

It's come to this: Fresno Bee readers have been reduced to dueling cat allegories on the Letters to the Editor page. On one side: a "totally clueless" and lazy black cat named Obama. On the other: a cat named Dubya that "disregards the expert advice on what's happening in the next block" and listens to his friends the "neocats." (I am not making this up.)

I often rely on local blog Gustav's Groupie to point out some of the more inane letters published in the pages of The Bee, and the highly readable Adam alerted me to the weirdness of the first letter, which I'll print in its entirety after the break. Was the writer going for a strained racial metaphor here? When he muses that the only way to stop a cat is to shoot it, which isn't permissible within city limits, is he slyly lamenting that killing our political leaders is illegal? Or are we just reading too much into tortured prose?

Then, in Thursday's paper, Rodney Austin responded with his "Dubya" set-up, which I'll also reprint after the break. His literary feline creation, whose color is not specified, is stubborn, thick-headed, mean and likes to torture mice.

I guess politics really is a catfight.

littleleaftea.JPGSo I finally had a chance to get over to Little Leaf Tea, the shop that quietly opened three weeks ago at the northwest corner of Palm and Bullard Avenues.

You'll read more about Little Leaf (and Echo Street Coffee) in a future column. Here are the basics:

Hours: 8 a.m.-9 p.m. Mondays-Fridays, 11 a.m.-9 p.m. Saturdays.

Food: Light lunches and snacks, including fruit salad, Asian grilled chicken sandwiches, BLT on croissants and pork buns. (Don't expect a lot of filling in all of the pork buns; the one I had was a lot of dough around a little pork.) Desserts include green tea cake, dorayaki (Japanese pancake with sweet bean filling) and almond cookies.

Drinks: More than 100 teas, including green, oolong, white, red, herbal and black ones. Co-owner George Widjaja has a delicate touch in drinks such as the Little Leaf Special (a blend of lavender, chamomile and licorice root) and the Orange Grove Vanilla (dried orange, vanilla, honey and fresh orange slices). Both show off a variety of flavors and aren't too sweet.

Setting: Tables and chairs indoors and on the small patio.

Entertainment: Nothing right now. Widjaja hopes to have live music in a month or so.

UPDATE: Anyone want to comment on what, to me, was an obviously lip-synched Paula Abdul performance? Wow. As for the results: Allison is out, leaving us the three guys for the final weeks. I really thought she would be OK, but, I was wrong again. It will be interesting to see what songs the judges choose for them to sing next week.

idolslash.jpg

ORIGINAL ENTRY: Tuesday night's "American Idol" rock week featured Slash as the mentor for the final four contestants. He took the singers The Roxy to rehearse.

I loved seeing Slash, and I thought rock week really separated those who can be stars (Adam and Allison) from those who are really good singers (Kris and Danny).

The most interesting thing to me about last night is how the non-rock contestants gave the "it's not my thing" line to justify their sucky performances. Yeah, it's not their style, but disco, Motown and country weren't Allison or Adam's forte either, yet they seemed to find a way to soar in those weeks.

I bring that point up, mostly, to show my problem with
Danny Gokey
, the presumed front-runner since he is the only contestant who has not been in the bottom three. His performance of Aerosmith's "Dream On," was awful. Painful. The judges called him on his bad notes -- that last high note was excruciating -- but they, and the audience, it seems, still give him a pass. I say enough with this guy. He is too boring, too one-dimensional and too forgettable to really make it in showbiz.

echostreetcoffee.JPGThose who mourned the demise of Javawava at the end of February have a new place to satisfy that caffeine craving.

Echo Street Coffee opened today in Javawava's old spot at Weldon and Echo avenues. I'll have more details in an upcoming column but wanted to give the 'hivers a quick heads up with the essentials:

Hours: 6 a.m.-9 p.m. Mondays-Thursdays, 6 a.m.-11 p.m. Fridays-Saturdays and 7 a.m.-5 p.m. Sundays.

Food: Breakfast and lunch dishes served all day, including breakfast burritos, blueberry bars, vegetarian sandwiches, Chinese chicken wraps and Greek salads.

Drinks: Coffee, tea and smoothies (plus canned sodas and such). Coffee purists may cringe, but manager Tyler Gidney plays with flavored powders and Torani syrups. He swears by the cherry mocha (coffee with mocha powder and cherry syrup) and Tahitian vanilla and hazelnut (coffee with vanilla powder and hazelnut syrup). And he's working on a version of s'mores (coffee, mocha powder and toasted marshmallow syrup).

Setting: Tables and chairs, a couch and a couple of armchairs. Local art on the walls.

Entertainment: Open mic night 7-9 p.m. Tuesdays and 2-5 p.m. Sundays. Gidney's lining up live music for the weekends.

Details: (559) 233-8995.

If you head there in the next few days, don't get confused by the "Javawava" sign above the front door. The Echo Street folks set up shop in a week and a half, so they have yet to put up their own sign (other than Gidney's chalkboard, that is).

star_trek_mn_pr_web375.jpgAll you have to do is wander down the toy aisle of your local store to see how this summer's movies have impacted what kids will be buying. There are toys for both "X-Men Origins: Wolverine" and "Terminator Salvation."

The action figures and playsets available for those two movies pale in comparison to all of the "Star Trek" items on the shelves. The selections include numerous playsets and three different sizes of action figures: 3 3/4 inches, 6 inches and 12 inches.

"The upcoming 'Star Trek' film is going to be a massive global entertainment event and with that in mind we have created a lineup of new products that will entertain not only existing fans of 'Star Trek,' but a whole new generation," says Liz Kalodner, Executive Vice President and General Manager of CBS Consumer Products. "It's important to honor the iconic property for its contribution to pop culture."

That honoring will take many shapes. There will be silver plated cufflinks, salt and pepper shakers, children's clothes, books and even a trio of fragrances called "Tiberius," "Pon Farr" and "Red Shirt" from GenkiWear, LLC. Considering the fate of most red shirt characters on the show, that fragrance should smell like death.

  • This summer he'll play at the annual hip-hop festival Rock the Bells. There he'll be with Evidence and Alchemist as well. He'll be doing dates June 26-Aug. 9.

  • He'll be featured in the June issue of XXL Magazine - the biggest hip-hop mag -- in the "Show & Prove" section that highlights breaking talent.

  • His debut album, "Boy Meets World," a collaboration with producer Exile (of Blu & Exile) is slated to drop Aug. 18. He should be doing some sort of U.S. tour around that time as well.

LIF_DLW_STRAWBERRIES_5[1].JPGStrawberry madness happens every year around here, prompting one or two stories about local sources for this spring favorite.

But Chameleon's strawberry waffles (see story #2) make me wonder about other restaurants using strawberries in their dishes.

I know of the tasty strawberry limeade at Limón, the Peruvian restaurant near Hooters at Blackstone and El Paso avenues (and sister restaurant to Limón in San Francisco). Limón gave me the recipe, so I'll share it here after a test batch.

In the meantime, I'm on the hunt for other notable strawberry dishes at local restaurants. If you have one to share, leave it in the comments.

I don't know why I didn't notice this sooner, but today is something more awesome than Cinco De Mayo. It's Fresno Day! While Cinco De Mayo comes along every year, Fresno Day only comes along once a century -- May 5, 2009, or 5-5-9.

MTD MCC FRESNO SKYLINE 1.JPG

It appears to be quite a perfect day to celebrate both Fresno Day and Cinco De Mayo -- tacos, beverages and patio in the early evening are all in order. The astute guys at FTK also noticed Fresno Day and are having a sale on Nickel Nickel Nine shirts.

This week's "American Idol" is one to look forward to. It's rock week and the contestant mentor is guitarist Slash. We also get performances from Daughtry and No Doubt (performing in Fresno on May 19), a vast improvement over last week's Taylor Hicks for sure.

It should be an interesting week, after Adam Lambert was in the bottom two last week. For those Adam haters -- who think he is more Broadway than rock -- Slash, a rock God, agrees with me:

This is dedicated to MsJoey:

Apparently the soundtrack for "Rudo y Cursi," starring Gael Garcia Bernal and Diego Luna, isn't available on CD until June 9th; however, it was made available on iTunes today -- this fine, fine 5th of May.

Trailer for "Rudo y Cursi" after the jump.

Multiple-choice quiz time: How did Donald spend two weeks of vacation?

A) He fell into the Beehive's million-word post about swine flu and spent nine days struggling to get out. And he didn't even have a face mask.

B) He joined an international ammunition smuggling ring and brought back 200,000 rounds to Fresno so that bullet-deprived residents can feel safer with Barack Obama in the White House.

C) He relaxed on his private island in French Polynesia, where he invited some of the great thinkers of the time (Noam Chomsky, Richard Dawkins, Joel McHale) for nightly salons discussing issues of the day.

D) He flew to Texas and drove 2,000 miles visiting family and friends, eating barbecue and Whataburgers, photographing wildflowers, ogling inflatable jeans atop El Paso buildings and hanging out with a donkey named Jake.

Did you vote for the Lone Star State option? Good.

Anyway, I'm back, and I'll first put my theater-geek hat on and direct you to this morning's Tony Award nominations, in which "Billy Elliot" leads with a whopping 15. (For those of you who already have seen "Billy" in London or on Broadway, I'm very, very jealous.) As far as I can tell, there are no Fresno-connected names on the list -- I'd been hoping that Heidi Blickenstaff might have been a long-shot for featured actress in a musical -- but if anyone knows of one, let me know. Heidi's show, "[title of show]" did get one nod: for best book of a musical.

I think I pissed off the Ugg shoe gods a couple weeks ago when I wrote "An open letter to Ugh wearers." They obviously didn't like my referral to these snuggly shoes as Ughs, which is honestly the first thought that comes into my head when I see someone wearing these boots with shorts in warm weather.

Since the day I wrote that letter, I've been stalked by Uggs. First, I noticed Ugg ads popping up on the Beehive -- as if to say, don't listen to that lady -- these shoes are so cool!

Then, over the weekend, every where I turned I ran into fashionistas wearing their short shorts and furry Ughs -- and, yes, it was 75 degrees outside. It was like the gods opened up the sky and made it rain Uggs: Four Ugh-wearing fashion icons in a span of 20 minutes. Evidence:

Then, last night, at the pharmacy, the stalker was there again: A girl shows up wearing boxer shorts, high red socks and, what else, Ughs!

So, Ugg gods, I'm sorry if I made you angry. But, I feel I am doing a public service -- trying, and failing it seems, to save these girls from severe mocking. Is it so bad that I'm hoping to one day no longer be subjected to this ill-advised fashion trend?

So, I can't help myself. Let's try this persuasion thing again, in a louder voice: IT'S MAY. IT'S HOT. YOU'RE WEARING SHORTS. PUT THE UGHY UGGS AWAY! DO NOT REMOVE THEM FROM YOUR CLOSET UNTIL IT'S REALLY COLD AND YOU ARE WEARING PANTS. PLEASE. PRETTY PLEASE. WITH SUGAR ON TOP.

The Cinco De Mayo parties started as early as Friday -- so we don't really have to tell you what day it is today, do we? On the day where everybody's favorite drink is either tequila or Corona, there's much to do in Fresno.

Here's a look at Cinco De Mayo parties happening at the bars, clubs and watering holes around Fresno:

I find "How I Met Your Mother" to be a hit-or-miss show. Sometimes it's hilarious, and sometimes I want to shake Ted Mosby into a coma.

Last night's episode was amusing enough; as usual, the funnier bits surrounded Barney, who was on a quest to bed a "Bro's Life" model as his 200th conquest.

For once, though, Marshall's subplot -- a fixation with pie charts, Venn diagrams, bar graphs, and "any visual representation of data," as Ted put it -- made the episode. His pie chart about bars he likes, and bar graph about pies he likes, were golden, as was his number crunching regarding Barney's success rate with women.

But none of that amused me as much as his ranking of presidents by how dirty their names sound:

President 2.jpg

How did I not know we had a president named Pierce? At first I thought that was a mistake on the writers' part.

Thank you, television, for once again proving to be far more useful in the ways of learning than the twelve years I spent in public schooling.

Ryan Seacrest has landed in Fresno. If "American Idol" and his spot on E! are not enough for you, Seacrest's radio show will now be piped into the 3-7 p.m. timeslot at Alice 96.7. The previous DJ -- Adriana -- was part of the recent Clear Channel layoffs that also axed morning show host Laurie West.

What says you, Fresno, are you happy about the addition of Seacrest and his "celebrity exclusives?" Or does your life already have enough of Ryan Seacrest?

Oh, and in case you're curious a syndicated show called "Valentine in the Morning" has taken West's wake-up spot.

This week has two sci-fi giants facing off. "Star Trek" opens in theaters Friday; today is "Star Wars Day" -- sending fans atwitter with greeting of"May the 4th be with you."

So, let's debate: Which franchise rules?

I'm a fan of both. I loved "Star Trek: The Next Generation" and Jean-Luc Picard. I saw the new "Trek" movie on Saturday at a promotional screening and loved it. But -- that said -- "Star Wars" will always come in first (it is responsible for my geeky love affair with all things fantasy after all).

What do you think?

That thing attached to Britney Spears' head when she performs -- it transmits sound, right?

Check out the following video of Britney performing in Connecticut over the weekend. A crazed fan jumps onto the stage and scares the bejesus out of her, though you wouldn't know it if you had your eyes closed (fan appears about 40 seconds in).

Considering the trouble Britney had with live mics earlier in the tour, it's no wonder someone cut the juice.

On an embarrassment scale of one to ten -- one being the show where part of her weave fell out, five being when she said the wrong city name while in San Jose, and ten being the show where her feminine hygiene product made a cameo -- the look on her face when she sees this nut is a solid eight, for sure.

One wonders what this tour would be like if she wasn't on meds.

(Update: Here's a hilarious gif of the freak-out moment.)

UPDATE: Saturday's Super Pet Adoption went really well, it seems. And I'm told that Sadie got a home. Thanks to all those two attended and adopted.

sadie.JPG

ORIGINAL POST: This is Sadie. A week ago we brought her into our house. A friend of ours who volunteers at one of the local SPCAs was in the process of finding foster homes for numerous dogs. Sadie was one of them. And she was one of the sweetest dogs I ever met.

We'd keep her for a week, until an adoption event. That was the agreement. For my wife and I, it seemed like a good test. We had been talking for a while about getting another dog, but we weren't sure how a new dog would shake up the dynamic at home.

"Wolverine" kicks off summer movie season today. Bee critic Rick Bentley set up what's in store this summer, which looks like it lacks the sizzle that last summer had but still has some fun characters to look forward to -- Harry Potter, G.I. Joe, John Connor.

hp.jpg

I love summer movie season, where fun, action and imagination rule over drama and depression. I can't wait for "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince". The trailers just keep building my anticipation.

I also really liked the first three "X-Men" movies, so I'll probably check out "Wolverine" (see one-minute video review below) and I'll definitely see "Star Trek" because I am a geek.

What movie can't you wait to see?

To celebrate our newly cemented status as the state's fifth largest city ...

1. RAT TAT TAT TAT: The Fresno Tattoo Expo is back for year No. 5. The festival will draw thousands of tattoo enthusiasts to the Fresno Convention Center on Saturday and Sunday. If you want to get inked, watch people get inked, check out tattoo art, listen to rock music or gawk at custom bikes and cars -- then, you should get down there.

Danny Gans5.jpg

Danny Gans, voted Las Vegas's "Entertainer of the Year" for 11 of the 13 years he lived in the city, has died at the age of 52. Cause of death has not yet been revealed.

I'd never seen his show, but anyone who has ever been to Vegas knows just how big a presence Gans was in the city -- billboards for his show seem to have been placed one every ten feet or so.

I'm curious: did anyone ever see Gans perform?
I have this odd feeling like I missed out on something by not seeing him before his
untimely death.

Am I right?

prom.jpg

It's prom season in Fresno -- and I don't mean for high school kids. I mean grown-folks prom.

If prom to you means (A) Getting dressed up all fancy and "being seen" or (B) Getting drunk and dancing, then Fresno's two upcoming proms definitely have you covered.

On Sunday, the people behind Circa, are having an '80s Prom at Starline. I'm pretty sure this is the type of shindig where you can dress up like Debbie Gibson and have a good ol' time. Keeping with the prom theme, there will be pictures and votes for King and Queen.

Then on June 7, there is what looks to be a fancier soirée (pardon me while I use fancy words). It's the Fresno Prom, being put on Twist and Fresno Mag. This is more of a "champagne and hors d'oeuvres," "royalty and recognition" (you can vote here) type affair. It's also a benefit for the Pop Laval Foundation.

Fliers for both are on the jump:
