Milano 1.JPG

UPDATE: We've been moded. Ed Stewart chomped the competition and won the Megazone challenge. Not only that, but he already blogged about it.

ORIGINAL: If you don't read the blogs, you might not have heard yet about the Megazone challenge happening at 5 p.m. tomorrow at Milano.

The Megazone (pictured) is a calzone, just mega-sized by Milano to more than two pounds.

Competing to see who can down one the quickest: Famous Whitewater, The Fresnan, Ed Stewart and Ms. Joey aka Lola La Chola.

The smack talk has started up and we at The Beehive feel the need to officially endorse a candidate in this battle. Ed Stewart is saying he "will not lose," but we think he said that about Blogger Olympics last year too. Blogger Olympics also showed that The Fresnan can show up and do well, or he could also suck. So we're not betting on him.

Famous is our family, and he's the littlest in the competition, which has us thinking he has a good chance to be the darkhorse. But, in the end, we're going with the person we believe is the toughest, and that's ex-Smog City Roller Grrl Lola La Chola.

It's all the local news and stuff from the blogosphere that you need to Fres-Know.

THE TOWER IS A PLACE FOR TOURISTS: The Tower District (and Fresno) got a two-page spread in the current Sunset Magazine. They shouted the Tower out as a cool daytrip and called it a "hip indie 'hood brimming with vintage flavor." And no where did it say "scary," so take that, rest of the city. [The Fresnan]

SUCK IT, LONG BEACH: Fresno is now officially the fifth biggest city in the state, topping Long Beach. Now we need a beach and a Roscoe's Chicken & Waffles. [Fresno Bee]

AIN'T FRESNO GREAT? If we may continue drooling over our city, we'll point you toward a new survey from the Fresno City & County Convention & Visitors Bureau asking people "What's so special about the Fresno area?" You should fill it out. [Fresno Famous]

PODCAST PIÑATA: The View Looks Good From Here, Fresno podcast turned 1 recently. What do you get a podcast for its birthday? We suggest a piñata. We like alliteration. I'm sure they'd be happy if you just listened though. [TVLGFHF]

IT AIN'T ALL RAINBOWS: A recent trainwreck of a local show has Conlan at FMB ranting about Fresno's music scene. It's a good read. [FresnoMagBlog]

UPDATE: Matt Giraud was kicked off "American Idol" last night. That leaves us with: Danny, Allison, Kris and Adam. It appears that Danny is the front runner, the only contestant left who has avoided the bottom 3. If Danny wins, the Idol streak of megastars, I fear, will come to screeching halt (it was apropos that Taylor Hicks -- the worst-selling American Idol winner -- performed last night). Let's hope that Adam and Kris's fans were just lazy this week and get on those phones next week.

idol5.jpg ORIGINAL POST:
I love old music. Who doesn't like a little Frank Sinatra every once in awhile? But, I could really do without another "American Idol" standards night. It was sooooooooooo boring. It's pretty bad when the most enthusiasm comes from the mentor -- Jamie Foxx this week -- who is entertaining in just about anything he does.

Idol is down to five contestants, but it felt like the night dragged on. Most of the songs were ballads and none really blew the house down. The closest "wow moment" was once again from Adam Lambert. Matt Giraud did better than I expected. The other three -- Kris Allen, Aliison Iraheta and Danny Gokey -- were meh.

Here's how I would rank the performances:

Anybody tune to 105.5 FM lately? Notice something odd? The station -- formerly set to play smooth jazz -- has gone to all Christmas music. In April, that's more Bright Christmas than White Christmas.

A press release from the station has a headline that screams "Christmas Music Around the Clock, 24/7, 365 Days a Year on 105.5FM!!" But Rick Bentley writes in his column today that it's all a gimmick and that we should expect a format change from the station on Friday.

On-air teasers are asking, "Are you ready for the truth?" Which fits with a rumor that it's going to a talk radio station. Another talk radio station in Fresno? Well, well, well ... I can barely contain my excitement.

PREVIOUSLY: Nooooooooooo! It's too early for Christmas music ...

UPDATE: Looks like Patrick Contreras is our winner! Thanks for playing!

ORIGINAL POST: I'm still jetlagged from my Hawaiian vacation, so I'll keep this post short.

I've got two tickets to Epicurean Delights, a food-filled fundraiser organized by the Fresno Fire Chief's Foundation. It takes place noon-4 p.m. Saturday at Central Distributing, 4250 W. Shaw Ave.

I'll give these tickets to the SECOND commenter to this post. You'll need to pick up your winning tickets at the front counter of The Bee. No multiple entries are allowed. We won't publish comments until we have the winner. Rules are on the jump.

This is a pretty good deal. Each ticket is worth $35 -- and lets you eat dishes such as pistachio-crusted calamari steak from Yosemite Ranch, shrimp fritters with spicy sauce from The Chef's Table and California chile short ribs with polenta from the Cracked Pepper Bistro. Firehouse cooks will serve up their versions of stuffed mushrooms, fudge, turkey chili and more.

My column on Friday will have more about the event. Check it out -- especially if you're interested in living like a firefighter for a day.

Laurie West's days at Alice 96.7 are over. The longtime morning show host was not on the air this morning and she has been removed from the station's Web site. Numerous sources are telling me that she was laid off on Tuesday.

West was the most popular female voice in Fresno radio, if you believe Fresno Magazine's Best of Fresno poll. It appears that Alice 96.7, owned by Clear Channel, also parted ways with evening host Adriana and West's producer/co-host Nigel as well. You can read more in Rick Bentley's column tomorrow.

With Y101 moving more toward Alice 96.7's demo with some recent format changes, I wonder if we're going to hear something new from 96.7 soon. Hmmmm.

bh123030745164R.JPGIf you plan to see the new "Star Trek" movie at the IMAX theater, don't wait too long. The movie opens at the theater in River Park at 7 p.m. May 7. It will run for over 80 continuous hours through 12:40 a.m. May 11.

But, "Star Trek" will only be in the IMAX theater for two weeks. Then it will get bumped out by "Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian." It opens May 22.

You will be able to go during that continuous run at 7:40 a.m., 10:30 a.m., 1:20 p.m., 4:10 p.m., 7 p.m., 9:50 p.m., 12:40 a.m. and and 3:30 a.m. After the long opening run, the film will be shown at more traditional times.

Tickets are on sale at the local theater complex box office and at www.REGmovies.com.

The film looks at how James Kirk, Spock and the rest of the gang from the classic television series come together. It was directed by J.J. Abrams. Look for full coverage of the movie in next week's Fresno Bee and at fresnobee.com. That coverage will include interviews with the cast, a review and a special Web offering.

As a child growing up in the 80s and 90s, I indulged in my fair share of fads, most of them having to do with personal appearance: pegged jeans, side ponytail, banana clips, jelly shoes, socks worn up over my pant legs, half-denim/half-cotton skirts, rubber bracelets, shoulder pads... you get the idea.

As for object fads, I was definitely a Cabbage Patch Kid devotee, and Care Bears, of course. I owned a Rubik's Cube, a Pet Rock, and a few Garbage Pail Kid cards. I was never much of a collector, though. I never owned any troll dolls, Furbies, Beanie Babies, Pound Puppies, Hypercolor t-shirts, slap bracelets, Swatch watches, or backpacks shaped like dead animals. And I still don't know what Pokemon is.

Today, Buzzfeed is asking people to chime in with their admissions of fad-dom, so I thought we'd have our own little discussion here on the Beehive.

What fad do you wish you'd avoided, or better still: which are you proud to have participated in? What fad do you want to see come back? Personally, I want to be able to pull my socks up over my pant legs without suffering the condescending stares of a cruel and intolerant world. Alas, it is my destiny to go through life with cold ankles.

So I was listening to Paul Swearengin on my way into work this morning and caught the end of the First Dude of Fresno reliving his station's Springtini event from two weekends ago. He said Springtini -- and its cousin Falltini -- were the biggest annual parties in Fresno. On that, First Dude, I call shenanigans.

Swearengin mentioned Sudz in the City, but said he wasn't sure if that was still going on anymore. OK, so maybe downtown events aren't the talk of the dinner table at home. But, yeah, Sudz in the City is still going on -- the 15th annual is May 23 -- and it generally brings out about 4,000. Springtini, from what I heard, drew about 3,000.

Let's go a step further -- the Cinco De Mayo festival on the Fulton Mall (pictured) brings out more people than 25 Springtinis. Headcount was over 100K last year, according to the Downtown Association. FYI: This year's runs Friday-Sunday.

Numbers aside, I figured there's at least a good question in here: What's your favorite annual Fresno party?

x-men_origins_wolverine.JPGBefore the screening of "X-Men Origins: Wolverine" for the press Friday night in Los Angeles, director Gavin Hood talked about how frustrated he was that a copy of the film was leaked to the Internet. The version that got out, says the director, was not complete.

The pirated version on the Internet was missing about 400 of the 967 visual effects in the final version. The music was only a temporary score. There had been no color correction.

He compared it to taking a reporter's notebook and reading it before the story was written. It is a flattering comparison, but there aren't millions of dollars at stake with anything this reporter writes.

Hood said, "Any piece of work is molded and shaped and, finally, you feel ready to offer it to the public, knowing that you will be judged on that piece of work. So, I'm thrilled that it's finally out there in the form that we wanted it to be, on a big screen."

Found a new site today that has already taken up at least 15 25 45 minutes of my time with its voyeuristic, Internet-y goodness.

It's called Texts From Last Night (warning: language nsfw), and it has shown me just how much more fun than me everyone in the country is having. How do I know it's everyone in the country? The texts are submitted with accompanying area codes. A few examples:

(805): Dude?? where did you go after Wildcats last night? Last I heard you went off with one of the girls we danced with?
(1-805): Negative - This is his GF, Bobby is in Jail for a DUI. Thanks for the info.

(317): I swear to god I'm with a high end prostitute right now and shes the most interesting person I've ever met. She just took me in to share an evening.

"Grey's Anatomy" had the brilliant idea to have The Knot host a website for Meredith and Derek's wedding -- supposedly created by Izzie -- to keep us all informed about the wedding details.

Um, we're supposed to believe Izzie is doing this when the last time we saw her she was so sick she was passed out on the floor of her hospital room? I think the producers should stick to the show and leave the web spin-offs to the fans.

ORIGINAL: If you missed the news over the weekend, The Public House -- one of the final dominoes still standing over at Granite Park -- has closed its door temporarily.

In Friday's 7 section I have a roundup of four shows that are opening this weekend: Theatre Ventoux's "The Anastasia Trials" at the Severance Theatre, Good Company Players' "Educating Rita" at the 2nd Space Theatre, "A Midsummer Night's Dream" at Veterans Memorial Auditorium, and "On Golden Pond" at Reedley's River City Theatre Company.

I have extended interviews about two of these shows: "Anastasia" and "Midsummer."

By the way: I'm on vacation this week and next (woo-hoo!), and I'm not doing any reviewing this weekend. In a perfect world, we'd have a backup reviewer, but that's not the case. So, I'm asking any theatergoers this weekend who are so inclined to jot down your thoughts about whatever shows you see in the comment section of this post.

Now, on to the interviews:

First up is "Anastasia Trials," directed by Lisa Taber.

Question: Bring us up to date on Theatre Ventoux. Had you gone on hiatus?

Greg and I decided it was time to be Mom and Dad for a while. We also used the time to regroup artistically and determine what is a reasonable season for us. Two productions a year was a lot to take on; we've decided to plan on one show a season and do another if we find the right play at the right time with the right cast.

When I decided one random Friday back in February 2007 to post a bunch of show fliers on The Beehive, I never thought it would last. In the post, I even said I wasn't sure if it was a good idea or if anybody would care.

This marks installment No. 100 of Post No Bills, and I still ask myself that same questions sometimes. It doesn't get the most comments or the most contributions. But for me, it's a labor of love. I set out a while back to dispel the idea that "There's nothing to do in Fresno." So this is my weekly contribution.

Sure, some of the trashy club fliers aren't the most flattering portraits of our city. But I like to think the Costco-sized helping of fliers in Post No Bills each week shows, if nothing else, that there are plenty of things to do in our fair city.

With that, I hope you enjoy Post No Bills #100 ...

Here's the thing: I have zero interest in seeing "X-Men Origins: Wolverine." However, on a promotional tour that's taking him all over the world, Hugh Jackman has been working his perfectly toned ass off to try and get people to see the film. So much so, that I almost feel sorry for the guy, and that may induce me to go to the theater and plunk down ten dollars for a ticket.

And then throw it in the trash. Because, really, I don't need to see this movie. But whatever, the guy deserves my 10 bucks for the effort:

Last week, at a teabaggin' party in Austin, the governor of Texas, Rick Perry, made some kind of idle threat about Texas seceding from the United States, an idea that was met with cheers by some of Perry's fellow Texans.

The following video, titled "Houston, we have a solution," was made in response to Perry's comments (and in case you can't watch videos at work, lemme break it down for you: "Peace out, Texas"):

B. The thought of trying to clean orange dust out of the tiny spaces in that keyboard with a Q-tip

Women have lots of products that push up their boobs, shape their butt and thighs. So, why not a few products that help men, um, get a lift down there?

The Gregg Homme Push Up Biker Boxer Brief promises to give guys a boost. Here's the company's pitch on online shopping sites:

pushupboxer.jpg

"The Gregg Homme men's underwear collection, offers the male counterpart to a push-up bra: the padded contour pouch lifts and enhances your package. Made from a sleek stretch microfiber fabric, this Gregg Homme brief wears well under skinny jeans and clingy fabrics. Any time you want to give yourself a little added boost, the Gregg Homme Push Up Biker Boxer Brief is the underwear for you."

Calvin Klein has gotten into the enhancement business too with the Body Boost Trunk, which the company describes this way:

"The Calvin Klein Body Boost Trunk, from the Calvin Klein Tech Cool underwear collection, is a low-rise trunk that offers the benefit of male enhancement through a unique boost strap system. Made from 100% soft natural cotton, this Calvin Klein trunk gives you a more impressive profile. The tagless Coolmax waistband on the Calvin Klein Body Boost Trunk is a great addition to your underwear collection because of its literal stand out design."

Today is "Talk Like Shakespeare" Day. Bet you didn't know that.

April 23, 1564 is the date cited by scholars as William Shakespeare's likely birthday, making him 445 years old today (if he even existed. Not the right time for this debate? Okay).

So, you could annoy your co-workers by peppering your speech with "thous," "sirrahs" and comparisons to roses, or you could just sit back, put in your ear buds, and watch "Shakepseare is an Idiot" from 2008's Rogue Festival, starring Will Albritton, Josh Tehee, Samuel Frank and Renee Newlove. Brooklyn band The Vivian Girls -- their sound is like a '60s girl group partying with a garage punk band -- plays at 9:30 p.m. at Howie & Son's. Rolling Stone loves them and so might you. Tickets cost $5. L.A.'s Abe Vigoda and Visalia's Drag the Lake open.

There's not much to say about last night's "American Idol," where contestants sang songs from the disco era. Those who have impressed in the past, continued to do. Those who have fallen short, crashed again.

The judges -- other than Simon Cowell -- seemed to be listening to a different show than me. Randy, Paula and Kara seemed to like everyone's singing. I think they may have been drinking some happy juice from those product-placement Coca-Cola cups. Only Simon was willing to tell the truth.

So which two contestants go home tonight? The DialIdol prediction ranks it too close to call. I'm convinced that we're stuck with Lil Rounds, despite her abysmal performances each week, because the votefortheworst.comers have championed her. I think we'll be saying bye-bye to Matt Giroud and Anoop Desai tonight. But, with the judges wasting their save last week on Matt, it could be interesting if people didn't feel compelled to vote.

Here's how I ranked last night's performances, from best (Adam) to worst (Lil):

If you're like me, you took one look at this new Zac Efron movie "17 Again" -- which opened at No. 1 over the weekend -- and instantly thought back to the late '80s. Back then age-swapping comedy of this sort were the hotness.

There was the Kirk Cameron-starring "Like Father Like Son" and the Fred Savage vehicle "Vice Versa." There was also "Big," a different kind of age-swapper, where Tom Hanks/Some Kid Actor went from child to adult. I never saw it, but another was also "18 Again!," which starred George Burns and Charlie Schlatter.

Where do your loyalties rest? With Mike Seaver or Kevin Arnold? Or are you all about Zoltar and giant pianos?

Yes, things are pretty bad here, what with strippers beating each other for a spot on the pole, but they're not as bad as they are in other parts of the world. Take India, for example.

You may have read yesterday about how the father of adorable Rubina Ali, one of the child actors from "Slumdog Millionaire," allegedly tried to enter into negotiations to sell his 9-year old daughter to what he thought was a sheik (actually an undercover tabloid reporter) offering $300,000. The father has admitted to meeting with the "sheik," but denies that he intended to sell his daughter.

Apparently the girl's mother doesn't believe him. She abandoned Rubina at a young age, but now wants her famous daughter back. Yesterday she politely and civilly explained to Rubina's stepmother how much she cares for the girl:

Hear that, Madonna? Stop sinking millions into Malawi -- there are bargain basement child-buying deals to be had in India. Plus, this one already has an acting résumé, so you're sure to get a return on your investment. Everybody wins! But mostly Satan.

Normally, I'd argue with anyone who calls downtown Fresno "dirty" -- but for this Friday I will totally allow it. Why? Well, one of the "Rock of Love," ummm, ladies is coming to host a party at 2039. Who wants to party with Bret Michaels' sloppy seconds?

rockofloveflier.JPG

The people putting on this event are the same people who brought that Domenico dude to town a couple weeks back. Yes, this guy. Thanks, Grown & Sexy, for bringing us all these "celebrities." Fresno is a better place for it.

Sidenote: Remember when we all thought 2039 was going to be this cool new place? And now it's the place where reality TV rejects come to get wasted and countdown those 15 minutes of fame. Also it's the spot for show-your-nipples Wednesdays (OK, maybe that's just what I call it).

ORIGINAL: I'm sick of hearing in news stories about how bad the economy is, as I'm sure you probably are, too.

That is, unless the story involves pissed-off strippers beating each other with shoes.

From the Associated Press:

AKRON, Ohio - A 52-year-old woman was attacked on her first day as an exotic dancer by a jealous co-worker wielding a stiletto heel, police said.

Akron police ... said the woman was assailed Friday night by a co-worker who didn't think the club needed more dancers.

Five bucks says VH1 producers are already on a plane to Akron to cast these gems for the next Bret Michaels offering: "Rock of Love Retirement Village."

A group of Fresno State students is trying to break a world record for a class project. Their goal: to break the Guinness record for the world's largest photo exhibit. I talked with Brenda R. Riojas, one of the coordinators of the project, and she tells me that the group needs nearly 139,000 photos to make it happen. The rules state that the photos have to be a minimum of 4x6 inches in size, and they have to be mounted on 4x8 foot boards.

The plan is to display the photos, which should conform to the theme "Faces and Places of the San Joaquin Valley," in the downtown area.

Here's an explanation from Riojas' group:

It is time to put our San Joaquin Valley in the spotlight again. Six Fresno State students and the Claude "Pop" Laval Foundation are asking you to help us break a World Record. We are proud of our Valley and the people in it, and we want to show the world that. It is with great excitement that we announce the world's largest photo exhibition. The current record is 138,355 photos on display and is held in the UK. We want to claim the record right here in Fresno, CA USA! Our goal is to gather 150,000 photos and display them at the Fulton Mall in Downtown Fresno on May 15, 2009.

Dear Ugh-wearing fashionistas,

I know Ughs are, ahem, a cool trend and you feel hip wearing those soft, furry boots. But does it really make sense to don footwear that keeps your feet warm in 30-below weather when it's 80 degrees outside?

ughboot.jpg

Let's put it this way: If it is warm enough to wear that tank sun dress you had on Saturday afternoon while shopping in Clovis, it might be a good time to shove those Ughs to the back of the closet until December. That goes for the fashionista I saw two weeks ago at River Park who was wearing Ughs with a super-short-see-your-butt-cheeks miniskirt and to the girl at Target three weekends ago wearing the boots with her super short-shorts.

I know Ughs started on the beaches of California -- and the brand likes to show models wearing some of the boots on the beach with shorts -- but, please, please, remember that the nearest water -- and cool sea breeze -- is 150 miles West.

As a compromise, I offer this tip: If you feel so compelled to wear the Ugh brand, buy a pair of these.

Yours,
Ugh-ed Out

People_Khloe_Kardashian_Jail.JPGSoon, the E in E! Entertainment Television will stand for Everybody. The way the cable channel continues to latch on to the barely famous to star in reality shows, eventually every semi-celebrity will be on the channel.

It wasn't bad enough we had "Keeping Up With the Kardashians." Now, sisters Kourtney and Khloe Kardashian are getting their own show. The new series launches in August.

Here's what is supposed to keep our attention. Kourtney and Khloe seek out a fresh start in Florida. If you had their family you also would move to another state. That's where they plan to open a new Dash boutique. Episode three is titled "Kourtney and Khloe Check the Mail." Does anyone else smell an Emmy? Oops. my mistake. That was just the stink coming from the dead brain cells of the bosses in the E! offices.

Here's a look back at the weekend. Did you do anything good? Spill it in the comments.

FRIDAY
- The third installment of my Vintage Fridays series was pretty awesome. Thanks to all who came out -- numerous bloggers, an elected official, all kinds of cool Fresno people and the random oldish guy in the top hat killing it on the dance floor. Next one is May 15. Mark your calendars.

SATURDAY
- Did you know "Prison Break" is back on? I wouldn't have known, if my DVR hadn't picked it up. Fox stuck it on Friday nights. I know there are only a couple episodes left ... but I feel like this is a diss. This final season has been pretty good.

- That night I hit Royce Hall at Fresno High for the Strings, Wood and Lightning concert with Patrick Contreras and Lance Canales. Trey Tosh was supposed to the third artist on the bill, but he had to cancel. The Rudy Parris Band filled in and, actually, turned out to be the highlight of the night.

UPDATE 1:45 p.m.: And our winner is ... Kristy Page, who has uncanny opera luck, considering that she also won tickets to "La Boheme" in October. I have a feeling she'll be writing a book one of these days titled "How to Win Beehive Tickets for Dummies." Congratulations, Kristy.

ORIGINAL ENTRY: I have two nice balcony seats to give away to the 2:30 p.m. Sunday, April 26 performance of Fresno Grand Opera's production of "Faust." I'll give these tickets to the SIXTH commenter to this post. You'll need to pick up your winning tickets at the front counter of The Bee. No multiple entries are allowed. We won't publish comments until we have the winner. Rules are on the jump.

I wrote an expanded column in Sunday's Spotlight section about one of the leading performers in the opera, the fascinating bass singer Hao Jiang Tian, who has written a book titled "Along the Roaring River: My Wild Ride from Mao to the Met." Tian was a child of the Cultural Revolution in China but had a different take on the angst of those times. When his parents got sent away to "reeducation" camps, he had a wild time as a teen-ager with the run of the house. He worked in a boiler factory and didn't start singing until he was 20; he came to the U.S. at age 29 knowing just a few words of English. Ten years later, he was singing with Luciano Pavarotti on the stage of the Metropolitan Opera. Now he's appearing as the Devil in Fresno's "Faust."

"Faust" boasts a top-notch cast all-around, including the great Mexican tenor Fernando de la Mora as Faust, Maureen O'Flynn as Marguerite and Luis Ledesma as Valentin.

LIF_SPCL_KING_LEAR.JPG

First off, some sad news that has already been filtering its way through the theater community: Tom Janecek, who had been in many local productions for Good Company Players and other theater groups over the years, passed away last Saturday after an illness. He was active in theater almost to the end of his life even as he underwent cancer treatment; his last production was in a show titled "Ropes of Sand" that was performed in the 2009 Rogue Performance Festival. He played one of his favorite roles, the lead in Theatre Ventoux's "King Lear" (he's pictured in the photo above along with other cast members), barely a year ago.

A memorial service will be held 1 p.m. on Saturday, April 25, at Bethel Christian Center.

I asked Tom's son, Joel, why he thinks his father loved theater so much, and Joel pointed to a questionnaire that his father filled out when auditioning for the role in "Lear." Tom Janecek wrote:

"I find the creative process of theatre personally compelling. It is a magical experience for me to see a whole world of people, ideas, and things brought into life on the stage from nothing more than mere words on a page. As an actor in this process, I strive to do everything I can to bring the character I am playing to life to the fullest possible extent that fulfills the playwright's intentions and tells the story in a superior manner. The reward comes not with the applause, but in how close I have personally come to that kind of perfection."

Donald wrote about it being iris season last week. It was my turn to check out these amazing flowers last weekend. I headed to the foothills to visit the Hilltop garden in Yosemite Lakes Park (because my husband washed my jeans containing the business card and I can't find a listing, you'll have to follow the signs pointing the way when you enter YLP). Like the ranch Donald visited, this garden allows guests to see these amazingly colorful and fun flowers in bloom and to purchase plants. The big day is here as the fifth annual Fresno Film Festival, organized by Fresno Filmworks, gets under way with a three-day weekend of feature and short presentations. (For a slew of reviews by me and Rick Bentley, click here.) The opening night film is "Skills Like This" (7 p.m., Tower Theatre). It will be introduced by one of its stars, Kerry Knuppe. Following is the opening-night party featuring hors d'oeuvres and the music of local jazz composer and saxophonist Benjamin Boone and violinist/mandolinist Eva Scow and friends.

Also, I received a note this morning from Robin Daléa, producer of the short film "The Crooked Eye," pictured above (shorts program No. 2, 4:30 p.m. Sunday), who didn't want us to forget about the local connection for the film. Dalea writes:

In 1995, Betty Malicoat's short story 'The Crooked Eye' was published in the San Joaquin Journal, Spring Edition - a publication put out by Fresno State University. Betty went on to open a spiritual and creative workshop called The Lotus Path in Coarsegold, just outside of Oakhurst and Yosemite.
Ten years later, unbeknownst to Mrs. Malicoat, her son, D.C. Douglas, adapted her short story to the screen and began production. The filming only took two days to shoot on a green screen stage. But the CGI effects took another two years. The process, similar to '300' or 'The Watchmen,' merges live actors with computer generated environs. The result is a visually stunning psychological journey.
In October of 2008, Mrs. Malicoat was summoned to a theater in Beverly Hills to see her son's newest film endeavor entitled 'Oxygen.' Upon arrival, she was given the surprise of her life.

It's all the local news and stuff from the blogosphere that you need to Fres-Know.

FAR OUT, FRESNO: We already feed the world, now our area might be powering it too. PG & E made a deal to buy energy from outer space and beam it down to Fresno. We predict Fresno will now hella be ahead of the curve on alien-human relations because of this. [MSNBC]

[The Huffington Post] (UPDATE: A tweaked this a bit after a reader brought to my attention that we didn't actually make the Top 10)

TWITTER WAR! Taking a cue from the Ashton Kutcher/Larry King battle, KMPH has thrown down the Twitter challenge to other local stations. I heard it was stated on the air that they didn't want it with @mikeoz or @fresnobeehive. Good idea. [KMPH Twitter]

Each location has about 15 passes. Passes are good for two people. So get 'em while you can. Might I suggest calling each location for current hours and to see if they still have passes left. Happy movie-going!

In Friday's 7 section I have an interview with Agustin Lira, director of the revival of "Esperanza and Luz: A Tale of Two Immigrant Women." The original play, a production of Teatro Inmigrante, opens Friday at the Fresno Art Museum and moves to several other locations over the next two weekends. Here's the full interview:

Question: Briefly stated, what is "Esperanza and Luz" about?

Answer: "Esperanza and Luz" is a story of two immigrant women who get tangled up in and end up defeating an exploitive and cruel guest worker program, Operation Fruitful Hands devised by presidents Bush and Calderon. By winning unexpected supporters, fostering alliances, through perseverance and a powerful belief in justice, Esperanza and Luz's actions end the suffering of 12 million undocumented immigrant workers across the country providing an opportunity for them to become U.S. citizens for the first time in history.

I know you've already heard lots about the Fresno Film Festival from Donald and Mike, but let me add my two cents.

If you care about food, be sure to see The Garden:

The movie is compelling enough to watch at any time, but it's particularly important now. There's a national trend of growing food gardens, including one on the White House lawn, another at Capitol Park in Sacramento and ones at United States Department of Agriculture offices.

Fresno has its own big movement, with at least five community gardens in the works and more than 200 attendees at a community-garden summit in mid-February. Add to this the increasing number of local schools with edible gardens, and you've got a whole lot of growin' goin' on.

I hope this movie reminds everyone that gardens are much more than plants in the ground. They're calming influences and a way to connect with our agrarian roots. Plus, in these tough economic times, they may be the only way for some people to get nutritious food.

The movie starts 1:30 p.m. Saturday. Tickets are $10, or $8 for students and seniors. Buy tickets at the Tower Theatre Box Office, JA Photography at 2003 N. Van Ness Blvd., or from Fresno Filmworks.

UPDATE: No one was eliminated last night because the judges -- (mainly Paula and Kara) who seemed unable to resist using their "one-time save" opportunity -- are giving Matt Giraud another chance. Now, Matt gets to sing disco (like that's going to keep him around longer). And we, well, now get to endure songs from terrible groups like KC And The Sunshine Band -- and have to listen to this week's worst singer again. Thanks Idol judges. Swell choice. What happens now, if, say Adam or Allison -- the two singers who should face off for the title -- don't pull the votes off disco week and get the boot?

RAY_2367_f.jpg

ORIGINAL POST: Once again, no surprises from the contestants on "American Idol" Tuesday night: Adam Lambert and Allison Iraheta stole the show; the rest were forgettable.

The big news of the night boiled down to two things: Only two judges would give feedback after each performance (a response to last week's show running 8 minutes long because the judges jabber on too much) and Quentin Tarantino -- who promised to be tough and critical -- coached the singers through picking songs from the movies.

Songs from the movies meant Idol fans got to hear a double-shot of Bryan Adams, a crappy rendition of Bette Midler, a copycat version of the Oscar-winning song from the movie "Once," more Lionel Richie and a couple rock songs.

Here's how each performance broke down:

Look at New Kids on the Block -- they're back after 20 years and the young girls who used to lust after them are now grown women, still lusting after them. In honor of NKOTB's Fresno show tonight, we ask you a life-defining questions: Who's your favorite boy band?

JON KATE PLUS EIGHT.jpg

Kate Gosselin -- the wicked witch of "Jon & Kate Plus 8" -- is in Fresno today for a stop on her book tour.

Kate will be at Border's at River Park at 7 p.m. to sign copies of her book, "Eight Little Faces: A Mom's Journey." She drew about 400 people in L.A. the other day.

Since we're all in a protest mood around here lately, I have half a mind to lead an anti-Kate march over at River Park tonight. That woman is evil.

If you've watched the show, you know. She's mean and bossy and controlling and her hair looks like a mixture between a Chia Pet and a spaceship.

She reminds me of that mean elementary school teacher you really hated as a kid. She treats poor Jon like he's kid No. 9. How he puts up with that, I don't know. But I praise him for not drinking himself to a stupor every night.

So who's got a good slogan for my protest sign?

PREVIOUSLY: Jon minus Kate, sharing 8?

Oh good god, enough about taxes already. I hate 'em, too. Everyone does. Bad, bad taxes. Go away.

But you know what? They aren't going away -- not if we're going to live in world slightly more developed and humane than 18th Century Appalachia, say, where the roads consisted of nearly inaccessible mud tracks half the year and the mortality rate for babies was higher than CNBC's bad stock-pick percentage. On Mike Oz's brilliant Tea post earlier today, the inevitable tax-bashing emerged, with one commenter delivering one of those full-fledged rants against government that would make me smile at its bluster if it didn't show such a limited understanding of how our political system works. (Remember, folks, politicians aren't space aliens; they're us, and we elected them, which might not be the prettiest system in the world but still beats having some general with more guns than the rest of us decide what the sales tax is going to be.) Sure, it's every citizen's right to let the government know -- and in as vociferous a manner as is legally allowed -- what he or she thinks about taxation. Protest away. But as long as the protest is against taxes in general, without getting specific about what should go by the wayside if they're abolished, it's just sort of boring.

So, in a counter-revolutionary spirit, I'm going in a different direction: I'm going to list three things that I'm glad my taxes pay for. Yes, like I said, taxes are annoying, especially on April 15. But so is dying of a communicable disease when you're 2 years old, or having to memorize "The Iliad" by heart because you don't know how to read, or not having air traffic controllers. Here are my three:

  • Clean water. It's not something a lot of people in the world get to take for granted.
  • The $149 I paid as a freshman for an entire quarter's tuition at Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo 27 years ago. Yes, you read that correctly. The State of California used to have the world's best and cheapest public education system in the world.
  • The knowledge that my society provides a safety net, however imperfect, to ensure a minimum of food and health care for those less fortunate than I.

OK. Anyone else want to play?

UPDATE 3:40 p.m.: Looks like we have a winner for this first giveaway. I have an email out to confirm. I'll be giving tickets away to the other films sometime between now and tomorrow afternoon.

ORIGINAL ENTRY: Once a year, the awesome folks at Fresno Filmworks slip out of their Friday-night routine and take over the Tower Theatre for an entire three-day weekend of small/alternative films -- the kinds of titles you normally don't see at the Valley's corporate multiplexes. This year's installment of the Fresno Film Festival, which runs Friday-Sunday, is the fifth annual festival for the Filmworks folks, and they've brought together a diverse and interesting lineup. We'll have all the details in a cover-story blowout in Friday's issue. (Here's a sneak peek: My favorite film of the festival is a Russian one titled "Mermaid," and Rick Bentley gives his highest mark to the American documentary "The Garden.")

The Filmworks folks have offered up three pairs of tickets to give away to Beehive readers:

I'll give away the tickets separately for each movie by tomorrow, so if you don't win the first time around, you can have another chance. First up: I'll give two tickets to "Skills Like This" and the opening night party. They'll go to the THIRD commenter to this post. You'll be able to pick up your winning tickets at Will Call. No multiple entries are allowed. We won't publish comments until we have the winners. Rules are on the jump.

SCRUBS.JPGA television secret eight seasons in the making is about to be revealed. Ever since the comedy "Scrubs" went on the air, the character played by Neil Flynn has only been known as Janitor.

Series creator Bill Lawrence promised fans of the show would know the end was near when the Janitor's name is finally revealed.

That's going to happen in tonight's episode of "Scrubs" on ABC.

During an interview yesterday with Donald Faison, to talk about his new movie "Next Day Air," the "Scrubs" star told me the secret would be cleared up during the second half of the two-part Bahamas episode. The Sacred Heart staff traveled to the Bahamas last week for the wedding of Janitor and Lady.

Guess the chain restaurants expect you to pay a lot in taxes this year. (Or maybe they're just doing anything to get you through the door.)

In any case, here's your list of spots to hit today. Remember: Not all restaurants in a chain always participate in the freebies and discounts, so it's best to check with your local fave.

  • Cinnabon is giving away little cinnamon rolls called "Tax Day Bites" 5-8 p.m.

  • Daily Grill is picking up the tax on customers' bills. For the best deals, stick to the bar, where there are drink specials and $2.95-$3.95 appetizers all day. Check out the themed cocktails, such as the Taxpayer's Revolt (white sambuca, Chambord and soda water), Itemized Deduction (similar to the Long Island iced tea, made with vodka, gin, rum and pomegranate juice), and the Windfall Refund (Stoli Vanil vodka, pineapple juice and blue curaçao in a sugar-rimmed martini glass).

  • MaggieMoo's Ice Cream and Treatery is giving customers free scoops of ice cream today.

  • In honor of April 15, P.F. Chang's is cutting 15% off customers' bills.

  • And Taco Del Mar will give you a free taco, if you sign up for one on the company's web site.

Parents, get ready to open your wallets again. You already coughed up dough so your kids can see the Jonas Brothers when they come to Fresno in August, now another Disney product is on her way.

And she's bringing an "American Idol" second-placer with her.

Singer/actress Demi Lovato has announced a summer tour with "Idol" alum David Archuleta. Dates on Lovato's MySpace indicate a July 10 stop at the Save Mart Center. The arena, this morning, did not confirm the date.

Lovato, you might remember, played The Big Fresno Fair last year -- much like the Jonas crew did the previous year. Now they're headlining Save Mart Center this summer -- and so is she. It's like she's following them.

And, David Archuleta, well ... I'm sure he's just happy to be on a tour.

Local author Mark Arax is going to be at Fresno State at 6 p.m. Wednesday. He will visit the local university to talk about his new book "West of the West: Dreamers, Believers, Builders, and Killers in the Golden State."

His talk will be held in the Alice Peters Auditorium. It is located in the University Business Center on the Fresno State campus.

Arax, a Fresno State graduate, will discuss the inspiration for his new novel. The book includes several expanded versions of stories Arax wrote for the L.A. Times. It also includes several new stories. They are all tied together by the fascination Arax has for California, especially the San Joaquin Valley.

There is no admission. The public is invited to attend. Parking is available in lots A and J. The lots are just east of the Peters Business building.

A book signing will follow the discussion.

Cheer yourself up: A 47 year old homely matron shows up on "Britain's Got Talent" ... Seriously, I'm still choked up.

I am, too. (You'll have to click the link to see the video because embedding on this one was disabled by request.) It's worth it to watch every detail of the video's buildup to Susan Boyle's appearance on Simon Cowell's British TV show, from her initial vocal fumble in her interview with the judges to her attempted quick exit off the stage when she's done with her song. The unemployed Boyles lives alone with a cat named Pebbles and tells us she's never been married or kissed. Now it's time for her big moment.

It is an impressive list. But it certainly leaves room for arguments. How does "Star Wars" get on the list over "2001: A Space Odyssey"? Is "Bicycle Thieves" really more of an influence than "Sunrise"? Didn't "Halloween" have more of an impact on films than "Psycho?"

Here's the list and the reasons the cable company gave for the picks. Let me hear from you about the movies that should have been on the list and which ones you think are overrated. The films are listed in chronological order:

LIF_MCC_TOM_AND_HUCK_3.JPGSure, it's Easter weekend, but don't despair about entertaining that houseful of relatives. There are definitely some cultural options if you look:

  • Top of the list, especially if you have kids in tow, is a FREE live theater performance of "The Adventures of Tom Sawyer," part of the Fresno County Public Library's "Big Read" program celebrating the Mark Twain classic book. I have a story about the show in today's issue of 7. (Pictured above are Andrew Golden, left, and Rob Lippert). It plays 7:30 p.m. Friday and 2 and 7:30 p.m. Saturday at the Veterans Memorial Auditorium.

  • 9780856676574.jpgAt the Fresno Metropolitan Museum, you can get a blend of Easter frivolity and fine art. "Bunnypalooza," held 11 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday, features an Easter egg hunt, photos with the Easter bunny and games, crafts and other activities. And a new exhibit beckons: The Met on Saturday opens "The Dutch Italianates: 17th Century Masterpieces from Dulwich." The touring show features 39 influential paintings by the famed masters of the Dutch Italianate style.

  • And don't forget about Fresno's Tower District theater scene, which rolls along with performances of "The Fantasticks" at the Severance Theatre (review here), "Little Women" at Roger Rocka's Dinner Theatre (review here) and "The Man Who Came to Dinner" at the 2nd Space Theatre (review here). Holiday weekends traditionally have light audiences, so it should be easy to get some good seats.

twqeXGfyM__depeche_-Corey_Cerovsek.jpgUPDATE 9 a.m. Saturday: Looks like we have our winners. Confirmation emails will go out Monday when I get back to work. Thanks for playing.

ORIGINAL ENTRY: I have some very special Fresno Philharmonic tickets to give away. They're "anytime" tickets that can be used for any of the remaining concerts in the season. (That's for the April 18 and 19 performances with violinist Corey Cerovsek, pictured, and the May 9 and 10 performances with pianist Orion Weiss.) Here's how these ticket vouchers work: You bring them to the box office before the performance you want -- it opens an hour and a half before curtain -- to get a best available seat. Or, if you're the type who likes to firm things up in advance, you can go by the Philharmonic office (2377 West Shaw Ave. Suite 101) during business hours and exchange your voucher for a seat.

Got that?

OK, so here's the good news: I have a whopping SIXTEEN of these anytime tickets to give away to Beehive readers. I'm going to give them away in groups of four. The winners will be the FIRST, FOURTH, SEVENTH and TENTH commenters to this post. (A reminder: We have a rule at the Beehive that you can only win something every 30 days, and that includes the recent "Monsters vs. Aliens" screening, alas. So if you're really keen for these seats, make sure you're eligible.) No multiple entries are allowed. We won't publish comments until we have the winners. Rules are on the jump.

Also on the jump, find out more about the exciting first concert in next season's Philharmonic lineup: an original piece by the father-son team of Dave Brubeck and Chris Brubeck titled "Ansel Adams: America." The Fresno Philharmonic is a co-commissioner of the work.

Inspired by Heather's "One Week in Fresno" post, I'm sharing some of the latest budget-friendly deals:

MONDAY, APRIL 6
Belana is handing out its signature burgers in exchange for donations to Poverello House. Donate $5 or two cans of food, and you'll get a 10-ounce Angus beef burger topped with lettuce, tomatoes, caramelized onions and Belana sauce (which is similar to Thousand Island dressing). If you want one, head over to Belana in Fig Garden Village before 8 p.m. Monday. Details: (559) 230-2352

WEDNESDAY, APRIL 8
Most Denny's restaurants will give away a free Grand Slamwich to anyone who buys a Grand Slam Breakfast between 6 a.m. and 2 p.m. Wednesday. The free sandwich consists of a scrambled egg, sausage, bacon, shaved ham, mayonnaise and American cheese between slices of grilled potato bread with a maple-spice spread. The Grand Slam Breakfast consists of two pancakes, two eggs, two bacon strips and two sausage links. If you're interested, call your favorite Denny's restaurants to ask if they're participating in the Grand Slamwich giveaway. Also check the price of the Grand Slam Breakfast. In most markets, it costs $6.99.

If you're in Dinuba and have a craving for ice cream, check out the new Baskin-Robbins at 870 W. El Monte Way. The shop opened in February, but it's finally getting around to hosting a grand-opening celebration 4-7 p.m. Wednesday. During the party, the owners will hand out samples and other giveaways. Kid-sized scoops will cost 31 cents. Details: (559) 591-2927

And stop by the produce section for great deals; the market sells some bundles of locally grown vegetables and fruits for $1. You also will see various vendors, sales and giveaways this weekend. UPDATE: So, I nailed the bottom two but was wrong about who was going home. Scott MacIntyre is out Lil Rounds gets another shot next week.

ORIGINAL POST: Once again, Adam Lambert, with his amazing voice, wowed the crowd and crushed the competition on "American Idol" last night when he sang Tears for Fears 1982 song "Mad World".

A lot of people -- those who DVR the show -- may have missed this performance because the show ran long. It's worth checking out (even Simon gave it a standing-O).

I had high hopes for this week's "songs from the year they were born" theme, which meant most of the songs were coming from the 80s.

The night didn't get off to a great start. Sentimental favorite Danny Gokey, born in 1980, sang Mickey Gilley's "Stand By Me." I knew he would choose to do a ballad. His disco-esque interpretation of this classic song was AWFUL. I mean BLOODY AWFUL. Let's just stick with Ben E. King, please.

From there, the show went from bad to mediocre, before ending on Lambert's high note.

Flashback:
"The island chooses who it chooses." Richard Alpert to Charles Widmore.

[We've heard this before from Alpert, who told Locke in the episode "Jughead" that the island likes 'em young. Um... its leaders, that is.]

Present time:
"Welcome back to the land of the living." John Locke to Ben Linus, who tells John that he knew all along the island would bring John back to life, and that he (Ben) was there to be judged.
"Judged. By whom?" Locke to Ben.
"We don't even have a word for it, but I believe you call it 'The Monster.'" Ben.

Five more local Starbucks are closing -- so says our friend Bethany Clough on fresnobee.com. The locations are:

  • Bullard and West avenues in Fresno
  • Figarden Drive and Bullard Avenue in Fresno
  • Shaw and Armstrong avenues in Clovis
  • Noble Avenue and Farmersville Boulevard in Farmersville
  • Mooney and Prosperity in Tulare

As you might expect, this is the most-read story on fresnobee.com, proving once again the almost-unbreakable bond that people have with Starbucks.

I'm not going to launch into an anti-Starbucks rant again. But I am curious to see how this plays out -- whether we'll see another campaign to "Save Our Starbucks" campaign, or whether people are now more immune to businesses shutting down. Will this open up opportunities for some new local coffee shops? We'll see.

southland.JPGNBC has partially redeemed itself. The network seemed headed into the depths of the toilet with the launch of tonight's lame excuse for a comedy "Parks and Recreation." Skip it. But, turn back to NBC at 10 p.m. for "Southland."

The focus of the new police drama is Benjamin McKenzie. He plays rookie officer Ben Sherman. It will be through his eyes that the tough and dangerous world of the Los Angeles streets unfolds. McKenzie should attract viewers to the season opener simply because of his "The O.C." following.

Tonight's first episode is Sherman's first day on the job. It is a full day that puts him in the middle of the most emotionally distressing event that can involve a police officer. He must deal with that along with hiding secrets about his past. If you watched the season opener of ABC's "The Unusuals" Wednesday night you might have a clue to the secret.

What kind of person you are depends on how you read the following license plate:

Picture 1.png

A vegan mother in Colorado requested the vanity plate for her car and was denied by the DMV. Why? Because as much as the DMV supports the love of tofu, it worries about those with dirty minds who could possibly read the plate another way.

The AP explains (kinda):

After reading Stephen's comment about Afikomen, I remembered this:

Personally, I'd like to take all that leftover matzah (or matzo or matzoh), and make me some Chocolate Toffee Matzo Candy.

As the folks at the kitchn say, "Crispy, flaky matzo covered with brown sugar caramel and bittersweet chocolate is so addictive there's even a special nickname for it: ... We call it matzo crack. It's just that addictive."

Of course you know by now that the Fresno Grizzlies kick off their season tonight in fitting fashion against our rival city, stupid ol' Portland. Are you gonna be out at The Chuk?

As you might have noticed we Beehivers are in a baseball mood today -- look at our nametags above.

If you're counting the hours until heading to the ballpark, here are a few things to click on to help pass the time:

  • Who's on the team this year? Here's the roster. And here's a look at some of the familiar faces back in Fresno this year.
  • A few things to watch for tonight: The Drag Kings will be performing at some point. There will be post-game fireworks. And the first 12,500 fans get a souvenir rally card.
  • Here's a video interview with Kevin Frandsen, who many expected to be with the Giants this year. He should be one of the team's stars as long as he's in Fresno.
  • The Mayor is throwing out the first pitch tonight. She's even Tweetin' about it.
  • Do you got your fitted cap yet? I do. If you still need to get fitted up, here's a funny video that will most definitely help convince you.

South Park slayed 'Ye last night. It was a pretty hilarious episode in which Jimmy and Cartman came up with "the funniest joke ever." Short version: "Do you like fish sticks? Then you must be a gay fish." Kanye, of course, doesn't get it and thinks that everybody is calling him gay. Carlos Mencia gets involved along the way and South Park gives it to him good too. My favorite part was Kanye's crew:

If you think they look a little absurd ... well yeah, but it's also pretty right on:

*We use that phrase very loosely

The gentlemen of ClubFlys don't get enough credit for the work they do. More specifically: You never hear ClubFlys getting props for the unintentional comedy it documents while wading through our sometimes woeful nightclub scene.

We at The Beehive are going to change that. We are going to salute the prolific photographers of ClubFlys for not just the all-too-skimpy shots they gives us, but also the trainwrecks they capture at precisely the right moment.

If you're not familiar with ClubFlys' work, most of it looks like this:

But if you look hard enough, you'll find shots like the ones we've collected below the first volume of what we hope is an occasional series: The Very Best Of ClubFlys.

Judging from the preview at the end of last week's episode, tonight's episode of "Lost," titled "Dead is Dead," looks like it's going to blow every episode of the season thus far out of the water. Why? Because it's all about this guy:

POSSIBLE SPOILER ALERT: Here is a synopsis of "Dead is Dead" from ABC:

Hellllll yeah. About time, says I.

As usual, in anticipation of tonight's episode, I encourage you to read Doc Jensen's preview on EW.com, as well as watch new episodes of "Totally Lost" and ABC's "Lost Untangled," both of which recap the previous week's episode. Following is "Lost Untangled":

Hard to believe, isn't it? I don't have anything super profound to say, but I liked this story from SeattlePI.com about Cobain's legacy 15 years later.

Looking back, it was certainly an event that sent ripples through my high school when it happened. I wasn't the biggest Nirvana fan -- but I knew it was one of the events (and Nirvana was one of those bands) that would define my generation of teenagers. As I've gotten older, though, I've come to enjoy Nirvana's music a lot more. Here's one of my favorites:

Local Nirvana fans take note: Nevermind, which is basically the biggest Nirvana tribute band, is playing at Crossroads next Thursday. The band is doing an April tour in honor of Cobain's death and is actually playing today in his hometown of Aberdeen, Wash.

If you've got Kurt Cobain memories you'd like to share, do so in the comments.

So I'm just going to throw this right out there: I might be the only person in Fresno watching, but the new "90210" is getting ... well, maybe not good, but actually kind of decent.

90210a.jpg

The show started off pretty weak, and was relying heavily on names from the first go-round's cast (Shannen Doherty, Jennie Garth) to entice viewers. But since the focus has shifted to the younger characters -- particularly the story lines involving pregnant ex-addict Adrianna (Jessica Lowndes) and the newly crazy Silver (Jessica Stroup) -- things have gotten much more interesting.

Last night's episode was directed by original "Beverly Hills, 90210" alum Jason Priestley (whattup Brandon!), and, maybe I was influenced by the martinis martini I had with my dinner, but the cold open was the best thing I've seen from this show all season.

parks_and_recreation.JPGIt seemed like NBC executives had given up when the announcement was made Jay Leno would host a one-hour talk show at 10 p.m. weeknights on the network in the fall. Leno's a nice guy. But, it is a shame NBC is willing to give up five hours of comedies or dramas to make room for Leno.

I have changed my mind. If the best NBC can do is "Parks and Recreation," set to debut at 8:30 p.m. Thursday, then give Leno three hours each night. That would save us from ever having to see another NBC program that pretends to be a comedy but is in fact as entertaining as sticking your face in boiling oil while ferrets chew at your ankles.

Amy Poehler left all of her funny behind at "Saturday Night Live." She certainly doesn't show any skill for generating laughs in this local government version of "The Office." The show uses the same fake documentary format. The actors get to improvise. It all plays out as being as nothing more than a pale ripoff.

Here's what passes as the plot. Poehler plays a low level government employee who is certain her work in the Pawnee, Ind. parks and recreation department is just the start to a bigger political career. She decides to use a battle to get an empty lot turned into a city park as her launching pad.

I'll stop to give you time to stop laughing.

Anyone who has ever attended Seders, the ceremonial Passover meals, knows that an essential part is the Haggadah, the text that recounts the exodus of Jews from Egypt.

Well, this year, there's a Facebook version of the story that's a viral hit: "Moses is Departing Egypt: A Facebook Haggadah."

No, you won't find lots of references to the ritual food in it. Instead, you'll find God's list of "25 things you didn't know about me," the "Which god are you?" quiz, and "Yes We Conserve," a Facebook application "designed to help you save money, energy, and the planet."

I called its creator, Carl Elkin, with some burning questions: Where did you get the idea for this? Is it irreverent to write a Haggadah to promote a Facebook application? And will you use this Haggadah at your own Seders this year?

Tonight's "American Idol" contestants will sing "songs from the year they were born." That means it's 80s flashback time. Seven of the eight remaining contestants were born in the 1980s. Only youngster Allison Iraheta is a 90s child, born in 1992. (Am I the only one who feels old?)

Here's what we have to look forward to: blondie.jpg

The oldest contestant, Danny Gokey, will sing a song from1980. Topping Billboard's Hot 100 that year: Blondie's "Call Me", Pink Floyd's "Another Brick In The Wall", Olivia Newton-John's "Magic", Michael Jackson's "Rock With You" and Captain & Tennille's "Do That To Me One More Time." I don't see Gokey singing any of those songs. I think he'll go with some kind of ballad from the likes of Air Supply or Bill Joel. Though, if he chooses to sing Pink Floyd, you just might hear me screaming from across town.

It will be interesting to see what Adam Lambert picks from 1982. He often surprises with his choices, and he could go harder into metal or punk or more funky with a modern rock choice. Here's a look at the top 5 songs from The KROQ Top 106.7 Songs of 1982: The Clash's "Rock the Casbah," A Flock of Seagulls's "I Ran (So Far Away)," Soft Cell's "Sex Dwarf," Missing Persons's "Words," and The Human League's "Don't You Want Me." My vote: The Clash.

The five other contestants will be choosing from the mid-80s, where artists like Prince, Madonna, Whitney, and Michael ruled the charts.

There has been a lot of news coming out of Hollywood lately about useless remakes of beloved movies and TV shows. Most of it means nothing to me -- new "Star Trek" movie? Meh. "Clue" remake? Lame, but not tragic. "Karate Kid" starring Will Smith's kid? I'll simply refuse to acknowledge it when the time comes.

But this. This is unforgivable.

/Film reports that Tom Cruise is looking to remake the classic "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid" starring himself and his partner in stupidity Scientology John Travolta. As you well know, the original starred the incomparable Paul Newman and Robert Redford, and is one of my top five favorite films ever.

Carnegie Hall is a busy place these days when it comes to Fresno connections. Contralto Sharmay Musacchio, a graduate of Roosevelt High School, is making her debut in the hall with a concert with the New England Symphonic Ensemble on Monday, April 13. She'll be singing Vivaldi's Gloria in D major. According to her bio:

Musacchio has soloed with Sarasota Opera, Portland Opera/IVAI, California Opera Association, and San Diego Chamber Orchestra. She performed Dido in "Les Troyens," Meg Page in "Falstaff," Pauline in "The Queen of Spades," Tigrana in "Edgar," and Tisbe in "La Cenerentola" with Sarasota Opera. She covered The Dragon role in "Grendel" and debuted (as one of the maidens) in Los Angeles Opera's production of "The Rise and Fall of the City of Mahagonny," which won two Grammies in 2009.

And on April 1, the Fresno Pacific University Community Wind Ensemble, directed by Patricia DeBenedetto, performed at the hall as part of the New York Band & Orchestra Festival. The group was joined by the Long Island Youth Orchestra and the University of Louisville Wind Ensemble.

The group will perform again 7:30 p.m. April 14 at Sunnyside High School.

One of the pieces on the program, "From Alpha to Omega, Prelude and Fugue X," was written by Walter Saul, an FPU professor. This is the second time Saul's music has been performed in Carnegie Hall in the past 6 years.

KSEE (Channel 24) has been having some problems with its analog transmitter over the past few days. Most cable subscribers probably never noticed because the cable companies pick up and use the local NBC affiliate's digital signal.

For those of you who still watch analog TV or have a cable service where the local signals are seen in analog, there have been blank screens. KSEE management promises this is only temporary.

But, don't be surprised if these kind of problems become more frequent between now and mid June. It is going to be very hard for the local stations to keep dumping money into analog equipment when it will no longer be needed in just over two months. That's when everyone will switch over to digital.

fast-and-furious.jpgI've struck up quite the correspondence (well, two emails, but I feel like I've known him all my life) with a guy named Christopher regarding my review and Sunday Spotlight column for "Fast & Furious."

From Friday:

"you suck as a witer no one cares what you think about a movie what you think is worth a dingal berry write facts not crap. BITCH"
From today:
"fast and furious $72.5m something you ll never see . get a new job or get fired you Adventureland lover."

Chris, you're so very right that as a "witer" I will never see $72.5 million, unless the United States falls into a Weimar Republic-style economic calamity with 30,000% inflation. But you're wrong about something else: I didn't write the "Adventureland" review. Since you seem to be adamantly opposed to the movie, I'll make it a point to get out and see it.

As far as the box-office total goes: Yes, $72.5 million is a whopper. It means that a LOT of folks went out and saw "Fast & Furious" this weekend. We've already seen mdub420 salivate over that amount. (Were you an investor, mdub?) I'm curious what other Beehive readers thought of the movie. Did you love it? Hate it? Favorite race sequence? You know how it is when you find something you love and instantly you want everyone you know to love it, too? Here is a list of things the Beehive is into at this very moment. We invite you to share your obsession in the comments.

chelsea.jpg Kathy: I can't get enough of "Chelsea Lately". The show cracks me up, especially the monologues and snarky round table. It is the perfect way to unwind after work before jumping into weekly shows like "American Idol." Plus, it's worth tuning in to see Chelsea Handler's slammin' shoes. So envious.

Mike Oz: There are many things I like right now -- Matt & Kim, South Park, the weather -- but there's only thing that's at full-blown obession level. It's not much of a surprise, really -- 24." This season has really brought back the luster and thrust "24" back into the top tier of TV. I bow to you, Jack Bauer, and I can't wait to see how you save the world this time.

Heather: Lately I've been obsessed with reading Kathy Reichs' crime novels. Reichs is a forensic anthropologist and the inspiration for the TV show "Bones," which I am also slightly obsessed with, and mostly not just because it stars Angel. The books aren't exactly great literature, but they're interesting, and I'm pretty sure by the time I finish reading them I'll be able to commit the perfect crime. Mwah-haha.

I don't know everything. I know where to find hideous fliers, sure -- but car movies are not my specialty at all. Yet I've been quite curious about this "Fast & Furious" movie that opened today. So I sought help earlier this week from a Fresno blogger, one Brodiemash, whom I knew could answer my questions. (p.s. Donald has a pretty funny review on the movie in The Bee).

WEDNESDAY, APRIL 1

Dear Brodiemash...
As a man who likes both movies and speedy cars, I'm hoping you can help me with something. I'm dumbfounded by this upcoming "Fast & Furious" movie. Is it a sequel? Prequel? Spin-off? Remake? Start over for the franchise?

I've never seen any of these movies and I won't see this one, but I'm curious. To me, it's sort of like putting out a movie called "Back Future" after the first three "Back to the Future" movies.

Please advise.

Yours,

Do you think living in Fresno makes your hair unmanageable?

totalbeauty.jpg The heat and pollution here landed Fresno on TotalBeauty.comlist of "13 worst hair cities." We're actually No. 7.

For my fine, straight and layered hair, this city seems perfect. That's not the case when I go East. Humidity = flat, flat, flat. Ponytails and pulled-back looks are the only hope in those climates. That gets old fast.

So, I don't think Fresno deserves this ranking. We're certainly better off than anyplace in Texas or Oklahoma, where some women must go through a can of hairspray a week to keep up that big hair. Right?

Roller derby, it would seem, is a growth market in the Valley. The upstart Valley Fever Derby Team is having its first bout on Saturday night at the Fresno Convention Center, dueling with the Silicon Valley Killabytes of San Jose.

bout-flyer.gif

Is there room in Fresno for two teams? NoTown Roller Derby drew well in its first bout. Can Valley Fever? We'll have to wait and see. One local blogger is skeptical -- especially considering the $15 ticket price. I've even heard rumblings of a third roller derby team starting in Fresno.

Add that to the team in Visalia, which is having a bout this weekend too, and the Central Valley seems to be overflowing with derby these days.

xbox 3.jpgIt is now time to reveal the winner of the "Watchmen" Xbox system. It was the commenter named Nancy who was randomly selected to win the cool prize.

In her comment about the movie, Nancy said, "I'm glad I read the book before I saw the flick. I saw the movie with someone who HADN'T read the book first, and I think I enjoyed it more than he did. I loved the book AND the movie."

So there you have it. A total of 637 people entered the contest. They were from all points across the United States and even some from Canada.

The turnout was great. Thank you again for participating.

BZZ_HDO_FARMSTEAD_CHEESE.JPG

Since that "Buy Local" commercial wasn't very compelling, let me help the campaign with something lots of people will want to try: award-winning cheese.

Last month, the Fagundes Family Farm in Hanford scored big at the 2009 United States Championship Cheese Contest, which featured 1,360 cheeses and butters from 32 states.

Fagundes' queso fresco under the "Maria's Queso" brand won a gold medal, best of class in the quesos frescos category. It beat out 15 other cheeses and earned 99.6 out of 100 points.

Naturally, my next question was, "Where, oh where, can I partake of this winning cheese?"

Turns out that it's a true local product. Cheese maker John Fagundes says this queso fresco is so delicate, it can't be shipped by mail order.

Here's where it's sold:

As for ways to eat this mild-flavored cheese, Fagundes prefers topping toast with cold slices of it, or mounding berries on top.

I'm thinking enchiladas. With its crumbly texture and moister-than-mozzarella feel, Fagundes says it would be great with Mexican food. (It is a Hispanic-style cheese, after all.)

mar09iris1W.jpgOn Monday I wrote a recap of my weekend and promised that I'd post one of the photos I'd taken at the Lone Oak Iris Ranch (11875 Old Friant Road, Fresno (heading toward Millerton Lake), phone: (559) 285-9521. Sorry, no Web site). One of my shots is above. As you can see, it was still very early in the season last Sunday, with the yellow variety above the only one of the plants in that entire long row in full flower. If you look at all those green plants ready to bloom, I'm sure that the succeeding weekends will be a lot more spectacular. The season runs through May 3, if there are still flowers.

Jennifer Smith is the owner of the Lone Oak Iris Ranch, and she's a cordial host. If you want to buy an iris, here's how it works: You pick out the one you want, pay for it, and then come back later in the summer to pick it up after it's gone dormant. Smith welcomes visitors (and photographers) and after making you feel welcome, she'll let you wander around. The tidy farm and immaculate grounds, along with all those gorgeous colors, make for a fine afternoon outing.

Here are a couple of upcoming dates for iris fans:

  • Smith will present a "Pollen Dobbers" class 9 a.m. April 11 and 18. Cost is $25. You'll learn to create your own iris. All of the irises at Lone Oak Iris Ranch are at your disposal; you'll do your own crosses and grow your own seeds. Call for reservations.
  • The Fresno Iris Society Iris Show will be held 11 a.m.-5 p.m. April 18 at Sierra Vista Mall.

First things first: I'm totally behind the new Buy Local campaign by the Fresno County Economic Development Corporation. Good idea, good cause ... but this commercial?

Nothing in this says "Fresno" to me. Nothing about it inspires a sense of local pride. Nothing makes me think we, as a community, are in this together and should be working together.

It's unfortunate, because I hope the campaign succeeds. I really do. But I also think that if you want me to buy local, then show me something local.

This has been a long time in the making -- and I hope it's worth it. Here is Vol. 4 of the "I Hate You, Mike Oz" series.

Backstory: This is actually more than a year old. I had written a column about the need for mid-size concert venue in town and said the Warnors Theatre, if you took out the seats on the first level, would be like the awesome Warfield in San Francisco. This gentleman was none too pleased with that idea. Notice that he called at 4:40 a.m.

er.JPGThe fact "ER" ends tonight after 15 seasons is remarkable. I remember sitting in a room with the original cast back in the summer of 1994. They were meeting with television critics to push the new series. That push was needed because there were no assurances the program would last the year.

"ER" launched the same TV season as "Chicago Hope." "Chicago Hope" started Sept. 18, 1994. "ER" went on the air the following night.

It was odd that the shows were so much alike. The NBC and CBS series both were set in Chicago. Both were medical shows. They both featured ensemble casts.

But, it looked like "Chicago Hope" had better odds of lasting. A big reason for that was the cast members.

The best known member of the original cast of "ER" was Anthony Edwards. He was the guy who had made those "Nerds" movies. George Clooney would go on to be one of the biggest film stars ever. At that time, his credits included a role on "Roseanne" and the TV series of "Baby Talk."

"Chicago Hope" had Adam Arkin, Hector Elizondo and Mandy Patinkin. It was Patinkin who was considered the biggest attraction. Who would have guessed he would have leave 'Chicago Hope," be cast on "Criminal Minds" and quit that series while "ER" continued without a hitch?

"Chicago Hope" lasted six seasons. The winner ended up being "ER" and the viewers. There have been some lean years for the NBC drama. Overall, it remains one of the finest programs to ever grace the television dial.

And it ends tonight.

There was a time when a monster rating could have been expected. When the "M*A*S*H" finale aired, six out of 10 TV sets in the country were tuned to the program. "ER" probably won't get much more than one out of 10 TV sets tuned to the last program. There's just too much else to watch.

At least one TV will be tuned to the last "ER." I was there when it started. It is only proper to be there to watch the show end in style.

They both rock with The Roots. Yep, Fresno's own Fashawn was in NYC last night and hit the stage at the Roots Jam Sessions at the Highline Ballroom.

No, he wasn't an opening act. He was actually introduced by Black Thought and had the full band backing him up. This is super fresh -- and also NSFW.

By now, you've heard plenty about the recalls of salmonella-tainted pistachios from Terra Bella and spices from Union City.

In her story about salmonella, Bee reporter Barbara Anderson points out that these pistachios and spices join other foods associated with salmonella outbreaks in the past two years: mayonnaise, peanuts, jalapeño peppers, dry dog food, cantaloupes, puffed wheat cereal and a puffed rice and corn snack mix.

Good thing I wrote this guide to food safety last month. Its advice applies to all food recalls, so if you didn't check it out then, it's worth a read now.

Here are some other resources for you:

  • the U.S. Food and Drug Administration's list of foods containing recalled pistachios from Setton Pistachio of Terra Bella, Inc. (Since the tainted pistachios made it into other products, it will take a while to figure out which foods are contaminated. FDA will update this list as needed.)
  • the FDA's press release about the recall of some spices under the Lian How and Uncle Chen's brands.
  • and the California Department of Public Health's lists of restaurants and retailers that sell the contaminated spices.

Michael wrote "This is a film that will stand the test of time. I've seen it twice now and will buy the Blu-ray to watch again and again. Much more enjoyable the second time! The movie poses lots of questions to consider and has fascinating details from the comic."

On Friday, the winner of the "Watchmen" Xbox will be selected.

ARTHOP: You all know what the first Thursday of the month means -- hopping art galleries in the Tower and downtown. Here's a graphic sampling of what's going on. You can get more ArtHop options here. We'd love to hear some of your recommendations.

hanzlicek.jpgFor 15 years, C.G. Hanzlicek, pictured, has directed the Fresno Poets' Association, which provides regular readings at the Fresno Art Museum of some of the nation's most esteemed poets. Now he's stepping down, and the FPA will be no more. (Unless, that is, someone volunteers to take over all the organizational minutiae of the event.) There's one more reading at 7:30 p.m. Thursday night, and it's sure to send the association out in style. Fresno's own Peter Everwine is the featured poet, and music will be provided by man-about-town Glen Delpit.

I caught up with Hanzlicek for a Beehive interview. (You can also read excerpts in Thursday's edition of The Bee.) Here goes:

Question: Why is the FPA disbanding?

Answer: When I took over the reading series, I thought it would just be for a couple of years. Then one day I looked up, and I'd been doing it for fifteen years, and then I looked at my hand, and it was holding a Medicare card. Running the series is pretty much a year-round job, even though there are readings only six months of the year. The off season is spent figuring out who to invite for the following season, writing grants, preparing publicity, etc. There's a lot of fetching and hauling involved, and I simply wanted a rest.

Were you at the recent Metallica concert at Save Mart Center? Have you checked to see if you're in the band's new "Broken, Beat, and Scared" music video? You might be.

Explains the band on Metallica.com:

We're having so much fun out on the road that we thought, hey, why not film it for the video of our next single? So we invited our good friend Wayne Isham and his crew to join us for a few shows in California in December of 2008 . . . Ontario and Fresno to be exact. We go way back with Wayne (several vids from the "Black" album up through "Frantic" and the "Cunning Stunts" DVD) and as always, Wayne rocked it!

andrew_0178.jpgBravo has lost "Project Runway" to Lifetime. But it will launch a similar reality series, "The Fashion Show," on May 7. Included among the 15 professional designers chosen for the competition series is Andrew who lists Fresno as his hometown.

"The Fashion Show" gives the designers a chance to have their designs sold in the retail market and win a $125,000 prize.

Designer Isaac Mizrahi shares hosting duties with four-time Grammy Award-winning performer and actress Kelly Rowland. Mizrahi and Rowland will also serve as judges alongside Fern Mallis.

Here's Andrew's biography from the NBC press site.

Andrew has already conquered the world of designer underwear. He started his own brand, "Andrew Christian" in 1997 and his urban inspired collections are sold in upscale stores throughout the country, including Kitson, Patricia Fields and Fred Segal. A self-described perfectionist and "gaylebrity," Andrew has been known to throw an entire rack of samples across the room if it's not up to his standard. While his underwear line has garnered worldwide attention and he's known as the "Panty-Christ," Andrew's goal is to take on the world of women's fashion. He says his inspiration comes from everyday life and modern art. He loves creating deigns that flatter the female body and make women feel good about themselves. He has a tireless work ethic and hopes to one day have a retrospective of his works at the MET.

So, with Felicia off finding a new adventure, I am the only Beehiver (Mike Oz says he will never watch the show) left who is willing to follow "American Idol" and keep the conversation going.

idolallison.jpg

So, here's my take on Tuesday's "American Idol" performances, where they sang popular iTunes downloads (aka top 40 music) songs.

It was the worst week of performances yet. Worse than the bad performances on Michael Jackson and country weeks put together. Here's my take on each performer:

Anoop Desai (singing Usher): Bloody hell it was awful. No originality. And, he kept making these snarly face while he sang that made it look like he had gas pains.

Megan Joy (singing Bob Marley): Uninspiring. Flat. Dull. She at least has her own sound and looks the part of a pop star. But, it's not enough to erase hitting all those bad notes.

Danny Gokey (singing Rascal Flats): Ballads are his thing and he does them well. Not great; not bad. Just so-so. The judges love him though.

SHARON_LEAD___ACTRESS__GUID.JPGThe "Light" is going out at CBS. The announcement was made today "Guiding Light," the longest running show in broadcast history, will complete its final season on CBS in September. This ends a 57 year run on the network.

Fans of daytime dramas should be prepared for more cancellations like this one. Soap operas are expensive because of the large casts and daily production costs. A game show or judge program is far cheaper to produce.

Fresno's Sharon Leal was just one of the actors who got a start on the daytime drama. Kevin Bacon, Calista Flockhart, Allison Janney, James Earl Jones, Cicely Tyson, Taye Diggs, Hayden Panettiere and Brittany Snow have all worked on the show.

Along the way, "Guiding Light" picked up 69 Daytime Emmy awards.

In a press release to announce the move, executive producer Ellen Wheeler says, "Being on the air for more than seven decades is truly remarkable, and it will be difficult for all of us at the show to say good-bye. I'm proud of everything we've been able to do, including outstanding storytelling, our community service around the country with 'Find Your Light' and the launch of our new production model. This show has such a rich history, wonderful fans, and I'm honored to have been a part of the 'GL' legacy."

"Guiding Light" debuted as a 15-minute radio show in 1937. It moved to television in 1952.

As economic woes continue to cripple our local economy, it's with sadness that we announce today that The Beehive has been sold to Shandong Commercial Group, the Chinese company that fell short of buying Gottschalks this week.

After the Gottschalks deal fell through, Shandong thought The Beehive was its best acquistion in the Fresno area. Shandong will soon announce its plans to liquidate The Beehive and its assets, including auctioning off the site's bloggers (UPDATE: See prices above). Scoopy will remain for a few weeks to manage the auction.

The *all new* Shandong Hive will be switching tomorrow to a black-and-white format to cut costs. Our usual pop culture musing will be replaced by:

  • News on products such as Snuggies, Detox Foot Pads and George Foreman Grills.
  • Great new features such as "Worst Liquidation Sign of the Week," "Did they just say Fres-zhou?" and "Shandong Obsessions."
  • 20% off coupons for our regular commenters, also known as our Top Dongs.
  • Cutting-edge online fortune cookies (one with every click!) featuring such sage advice as "Make two grins grow where there was only a grouch before."
  • A Hive credit card available to anyone with a pulse.
  • A new strategic slogan: "It's a B(ee) Thing."

The Weinstein Company will pay NBCU for the right to move "Project Runway" to Lifetime. All of the parties are pleased with the outcome. Harvey Weinstein added, "I want to personally congratulate Jeff Zucker and NBCU on their success in the litigation and thank Jeff for resolving this in a professional manner. We look forward to working together on our ongoing projects."

Andrea Wong, President and CEO, Lifetime Networks released this statement: I couldn't be more excited that Lifetime will bring its viewers an amazing, all-new season of "Project Runway" this summer.
