I'm one of those who thinks its a masterpiece. I've seen it twice so far at IMAX (and need to see it again). In my opinion, it's the best way to experience it.
Wow that looks great. I want it...
When against the comic titans such as Iron Man and Batman, I though Watchmen had no chance. However, I was proven wrong. Watchmen is the single best movie I have ever seen. Strong plot, diverse characters, amazing visuals, and a beautiful soundtrack come together to make Watchmen a must see.
Watchmen was long, and it was blue.
The visuals were vibrant, with the use of color and shadow stand-out techniques. The original score and soundtrack selections felt appropriate. The acting was decent on its own, but the writing and character depth overshadowed many actors in the parts. The characters and plot pacing were icing on the cake.
Wonderfully astute. The characters have many emotive nuances.
The film was great. It met all my expectations as a fan of the graphic novel, but didn't push the small nuances that easily could have given another hour to top it's length.
A perfect re-imagining.
The Watchmen movie stayed faithful to the graphic novel in more ways then it didn't. Director Zack Snyder and team recreated the amazing alternate universe of the Watchmen, deliver the breathtaking story, and doing it with such style that was able to please long time fans and create new ones.
I am a long time fan of the comic and have been waiting to see this come to the screen for decades, and I was not disappointed. I think that overall the most powerful aspect of this film is how uncomfortable it made me. The entire experience was ultimately disconcerting, as disturbing as the first time I read the comic and perhaps the most unsettled I've ever been by a movie in my life.
I really enjoyed this movie. The effects were great. A must see!
For the most highly anticipated movie in '09 it didn't do as well as it should have. Removed/shortened various scenes from the graphic novel that i had fallen in love with. Sex scene was awkward to watch and some fight scenes were just over the top.
Truly a great film that will alienate people. The hardcore will hate it for deviating so much from the source material while the mainstream will hate it for not being "X-Men".
Watchmen is the only movie I have ever seen that has a graphic style that actually suits the theme. All the characters are well portrayed and stay true to the graphic novel. The twist at the end was really well done and kept the viewer glued to their seat. The only thing I disliked about it was the length.. but really Jackie Earl Haley's performance made up for that. Fantastic movie overall, 9/10!
I really think that this is a movie that you can go back and see again and again and find something new. I am really looking forward to seeing it in IMAX.
I thought the film was hit and miss all around. Actors playing Rorschach and Comedian were spot on. Those playing Silk Spectre II and Adrian not so much. The music often seemed out of place. It was visually stunning. The ending was extremely disappointing. Wish I had more than 50 words.
Certainly one of the more anticipated movies of all time, I headed to see it on the IMAX as soon as I could. The best thing about the movie? It was coherent, even if you haven't read the comic. The worst? My popcorn ran out.
For this movie there will three audiences, the die hard fans who will not like it, those who will like it not matter what, and the non fans who will hate it.
My geek cred: I think Watchman is the greatest graphic novel ever written. And I love the Watchman movie. I may get thrown out of the geek club for saying so, but the movie perfectly captured the spirit of the comic while cleaning up and improving the plot.
This movie is one for the ages. It has great special effects and the plot is incredible.
It's ok if your idea of fun is a blue phallus bouncing around for two and 1/2 hours.
The film that is Watchmen was an all around summary of the graphic novel. Though many of its storylines were condensed on film, it did not stop the brought-to-life version of each character to be successfully translated. The movie was definitely made for the fans. It was awesome. :)
I loved this movie, I think that it is in the top 5 comic book based movies of all time.
Great movie, very entertaining. I didnt realize how long it was till walking out of theater 2.5 hours later.
To sum it up in one word "POWERFUL", this is one of the better movies of the comic book industry. For that matter, one of the better comic book's of all time and for DC comics to tell it really means a lot. They've done a great job in telling the human nature side of comics and I strongly recommend any one to go see this movie with an open mind.
Watchmen is a movie that not only makes you think about our world, but theirs as well. It's true to the graphic novel, which is a rarity, and the cinematography is outstanding. They did a great casting job, the effects are brilliant, and I left the theatre moved.
Personally I thought it was great, but I am able to seperate movies from source materials (ie X-Men, Iron Man, Ect). It was a great ride worth the price of admission!
Overall, Watchmen was a good movie. There was more slow-motion than I would have liked, and there were some glaringly consistent inconsistencies with the comic, but in its own light, it was well filmed, well acted, well directed, and overall well done.
Who watches the Watchmen? I do.
With as much as I love the original watchmen comics, I was hesitant to see the movie thinking it could not compare. I was pleasantly surprised. While no movie could live up to the comics, they did a great job! With so much material covered in the 2 1/2 hours, I was very happy with the results.
Talk about awesome! Great prize and a great movie from a great website. This movie really rocked; and it's even better on an XBOX360!
As a movie geek (and a non-so-much comic book one), I enjoyed the film. I hadn't read the graphic novel so I didn't have any expectations to meet. I was entertained.
I hated this movie. I really did. I was so disinterested, I couldn't even remember any of the characters' names other than Rorshach and Dr. Manhattan. I fell asleep twice.
It takes a good story to get me out there and pay the high admission. From reading the reviews and watching the trailers. It made me bust out my old comics and feel like a kid at heart again. A kid wanting to see a comic-made movie!
Really impressive movie and a great contest idea!
I never got around to reading the graphic novel, but I'm a big fan of masked vigilantes. I waited 2 hours to see the midnight showing in IMAX….and it was totally worth it. Dr. Manhattan aside I felt that this was a very realistic portrayal of “Super Heroes”.
Watchmen was a real visual masterpiece. Wasn't the best movie i've ever seen based on a comic book but easily in the top five. Best part was what Dr. Manhattan looked like.
It was worth the money to watch. Even without the giant squid.
Good comic fun!
I went to the movies with no previous knowledge of anything related to current movies. I bought a ticket for "watchmen" expecting a private detective story, or maybe a full male cast movie. Boy was I wrong. I must say I was a bit disappointed.
I wanted to finish the book before seeing the movie. As with any great book it's hard to take it to the big screen and do it justice. From what I have heard the director did a heck of a job. Can't wait to see it!
Definitely worth the money. Awesome special effects and makeup. I will probably go again this weekend.
I never read the novel and found that it was easily understandable. The special effects did not disappoint. The story was good, but it seem to hit a plateau 2/3rds in to it. I found most of my interest going to the cinematography on some of the less complex scenes. I found most of those had Rorschach in them and they were great.
This was a really great movie, watching it at IMAX made it even better!
The storyline was good and stuck to the graphic novel well. Visually, the movie was absolutely stunning. Snyder took on an extremely large project and for the amount that could have (and did in some ways) go wrong, I thought he did great.
To me, a mandatory part of making a Watchmen movie should have been the giant squid though. If you're going to attempt to take on Watchmen, you should go all the way.
I am always a fan of new and innovative CG techniques. I never really cared for the Watchmen until the film came out.
Been a fan of the original work for decades, so I went into the film with trepidation but have to admit Snyder hits all the right spots, even managing to capture some of the underlaying themes and archetypes of the graphic novel. Who Watches the Watchmen? Happily me.
Not for the faint of heart! Rent it on Netflix instead!
The movie was visually stunning, entertaining at times, great work on Dr. Manhattan. But the plot was horrible the end was retarded, and what is up with the heroes killing each other (oops sorry spoiler)
This movie is one of the most truthful adaptations of a graphic novel to it's source material. Hence, controversy.
the watchmen is a movie based on a dark graphic novel. it deals with the anomie felt by many of our society. the movie follows the trend of some of the more recent comic based movies and embraces the grittiness of the graphic novel. like every movie, it has to make sacrifices and some purists will be dissatisfied. they shouldn't be. instead, they should enjoy this take on the story, and enjoy a great story being brought to life on the big screen.
I'm glad I read the book before I saw the flick. I saw the movie with someone who HADN'T read the book first, and I think I enjoyed it more than he did. I loved the book AND the movie.
What is a hero? Where is the line that separates justice and vengeance? Do we thank those willing to cross it in the name of the greater good, or do we villify them? "Watchmen" effectively translates these themes of the graphic novel into a visceral, three-dimensional tour de force.
Definitely one of the more exciting films this year. I felt it gave a satisfying overview of the comic even though it left out some of my favorite parts, which is impossible to translate into film easily. It was very graphic, the acting was good enough to hold it over.
A LOT FANS OF THIS MOVIE MIGHT HATE ME AFTER THIS BUT IM JUST GOING TO GO AHEAD AND SAY IT! THIS MOVIE WASNT ALL THAT! PEOPLE GET TO HYPED ABOUT IT. WELL LIKE BOYZ NOIZE SAID "DONT BELIEVE THE HYPE"
IT WAS EXTREMELY LONG, LITTLE ACTION AND THE MORAL OF THE END OF THE MOVIE (TWO WORDS) EXTREMELY RETARDED. I CANT BELIEVE I PAID FOR MY FRIEND AND I 20 BUCKS TO WASTE MY TIME FOR THREE HOURS.... COULD HAVE GONE TO SAVE MART AND BOUGHT ME A 18 PACK INSTEAD..... AND WATCH IT BOOTLEG ONLINE......
THERE WERE SOME REALY!!!!!! GOOD CAMERA EFFECTS ON THIS MOVIE CANT COMPLAIN. AND THE GIRLS (HOT............) I EXPECTED TOO MUCH AND GOT LITTLE OUT OF IT. THE ROSACH CHARACTER OR WHATEVER HIS NAME WAS (WAS BY FAR THE BEST CHARACTER OF THE MOVIE) HE WAS RUTHLESS AND A TOTAL BAD ASS! CAN I SAY BAD ASS IN HERE? DR. MANHATTAN (SORRY IF I MISPELLED) A REAL WEIRD DUDE. AND HIS MEAT JUST HANGING OUT IN EVERY SCENE. (JUST WEAR A SUIT PLEASE) NOW THAT OWL GUY. TOTAL BORINGNESS, OTHER THAN THE FACT THAT HE CAN TOTALLY PUT IT DOWN WITH THAT CHICK THAT CHARACTER WAS COMPLETELY B.O.R.I.N.G......
THERES MORE CHARACTERS BUT I THINK I TYPED TOO MUCH CRAP ALREADY. NEWAYS THIS MOVIE TO ME MAKES A GOOD RED BOX (1 DOLLAR) RENTAL. AND DONT BURN IT PLEASE IS NOT WORTH WORKING YOUR LAPTOP LASER OVER IT.
This was an amazing movie that truly lived up to the hype. I never go to the theater since I am usually let down, but this time all was as advertised. Action, Story, visual effects. It was all there. LOVED IT!
Overall I think it is next to impossible for someone to make a great movie out of "Watchmen". The story is just too layered and complex to be told well in a 2-3 hour film. That said, kudos to the director for getting some good scenes in there.
Good!
I enjoyed the movie. I thought it was beautifully filmed and grasped some heavy concepts while still being an entertaining action flick. My only complaint is that some of the acting (Malin Ackerman) was pretty flat.
A gutsy effort to bring the graphic masterpiece to the silver screen, but it's mainly for the fans. The story is too convoluted to be crammed into a single-sitting movie, although the shot-for-shot accuracy to the novel is to be admired. A well-intentioned failure.
I enjoyed the movie up until the ending. They did everything they can to story true to the movie, but somehow just gave up at the end and disregarded the last few books for a happy ending that just didn't fit in.
i couldn't imagine a better adaptation of this graphic novel. Rorschach was so wonderfully cast i nearly peed. ok, i did pee.
Great film, action packed and a great story, A must see film in my opinion.
I think that it was a great movie for sticking to the comic. There were so many scenes that looked like they were pulled straight out of the thing and stuck up on the big screen. Awesome movie for someone who read the comic.
Great almost Panel to Panel adaptation, I was a big fan of the GN, and was glad to see how true it was up until the ending. The cast also was dead on, JEH was Rorshach.
A very, very well done cinematic tribute to the graphic novel, and despite clocking in at approximately 3 hours, I feel that it may have been improved if it were a tad longer, as the film's pace felt rather rushed.
Watchmen was an experience. It is gorgeous to look at and the plot is driven at a steady pace that always keeps you waiting for the next scene. It may not have been the greatest film in theaters but it stands as a great interpretation of the comic series it's based on.
The greatest compliment I can pay to an adaptation of such a well regarded subject is that it completely reversed by poor expectations and won me over. If that's not a strong recommendation, nothing is. It's not about heroes, it's about people, understand that and you udnerstand Watchmen.
If you loved the comic, then wait for the full length release this summer with the extra 1 hour 20 minutes.
In all fairness, Watchmen is a good film, and probably the most faithful to its source when it comes to comic-to-film adaptations. And I'd certainly go see it again. But, it's not the type of film I can recommend to those who haven't read the actual GN, because without prior knowledge, I think the average viewer may feel a bit bored sitting through 2.7 hours of book paced story. It won't reinvent the superhero film genre, but it certainly shows that when the right people are behind the wheel, a good adaptation can be made ... let's just hope Alan Moore can learn that too.
Finally got time to see watchmen last night, this would be the perfect compliment to seeing the movie!
I thought Watchmen was excellent. It was as faithful as one could come to a movie adaptation. A visual masterpiece. Haley and Morgan owned their roles, and the soundtrack was beautiful, with great score and source material.
I think that the graphic novel has more visceral weight than the movie, but the film acts as a good supplement to the masterpiece. It frustrates me to know that people will write off the movie without even touching the graphic novel.
I thought the movie was great. True to the novel, for sure and extremely entertaining. I left the theater with the same feeling of awe that I had after finishing the book, which alone is impressive!
Haven't read the novel, but I absolutely loved the movie. If you like your action movies with a philosophical underpinning, then this is the movie for you.
The Watchman was a very interesting and well designed movie. The Bob Dylan intro was especially amazing. After seeing it I could tell there was more to the story that didn't fit in the movie so I went and got the book.
After years, possibly decades, of hearing about this comic being turned into a film, I left the theatre a few weeks ago and muttered to myself, "It was worth watching."
That's how I described "Watchmen" to friends unfamiliar with the source material. Upon reflection, It's a good adaptation of an amazing graphic novel. I feel I should see it again.
The film wasn't perfect, but it was the perfect testament of our time. The film's adaptation of Alan Moore's classic graphic novel was done in such a way that it effectively parallels our current world. The film effectively shows that sacrifices are always necessary because of human nature.
This movie was great. It wasn't "The Dark Knight" amazing or "Spiderman 3" crap. Sure the movie had its problems like certain songs in the soundtrack and the performances by both Silk Spectres where horrible, but this movie still leans on the positive side in my book.New ending is great. 3 out of 4 stars
Was it the movie that everyone was waiting for? No. What you have here is a film that survived much of the Hollywood machine to remain mostly intact, partly censored to be politically correct, but valiantly attempting to remain true to the source. Even if the author hates the movie.
Having never read the graphic novel I loved it.
The watchmen movie was very good at staying true to the characters, the only gripe was the ending, but after really thinking about it i enjoy the "realistic" version better then the comic for a movie. also the little quips to the fans of the comic were awesome.
It was an enjoyable movie, but it wasn't Watchmen. The focus on action and the end event missed the in-depth character exploration that made the book great.
Watchmen was very enjoyable; may have liked it more if it contained more action sequences, but the storyline grabbed hold and really did not let go until the finish.
I liked the movie while watching it, not while thinking about it back at home. My biggest problem - why isnt Silk Spectre smoking? Boo! But xbox with them on it? Win!
Overall a great movie experience for anyone who has read the graphic novel. The slow motion effects (while intended to capture a sense of the original medium) is quite distracting and definitely could have been executed better. Rorschach ftw.
Rorschach's Journal : March Nineteenth, Ten Seventeen PM
Movie left bad taste in mouth.
Overblown sequences sidestepped deeper meaning.
Drieberg too young.
Veidt too thin.
Soundtrack paticurlarly out of place.
New resolution suprising, almost clean, must investigate further.
Comedian was right, all big joke. Parody.
I was quite pleased overall.
The casting was pretty much perfect, and (people are going to hate me for this) I actually preferred the movie plot.
On the other hand, I thought they did a terrible job on the music.
All the dark grittiness you expect from modern heroics, all the gorgeous visuals you could want, and as much of a happy ending as you can stand (which, is, you know, none).
If you enjoyed 300 then you will love Watchmen. It is a brilliant movie from start to finish. Watching this film on IMAX was amazing.
I thought it was an incredible movie. The filmmakers' were very faithful to the novel. If I hadn't read the graphic novel my review would probably be slightly negative. Although, they provided as much detail as possible within the given time.
I thought the movie followed the comic far too closely in some parts and too loosely in others. Otherwise, it was a really fun movie to watch.
Awesome comic book action movie that bent reality and found a great way to "retell" historical events in a way that was engaging and somewhat mind-blowing! Best "non-comic book" villan with a mind**** of a twist. Best line of the movie - "I'm not locked in here with you, you're locked in here with me!"
I really enjoyed the movie. I finished re-reading the book that afternoon, so it was fresh in my mind. The movie was very faithful, and I didn't mind the different ending. In fact, I think it worked better in some ways. Overall, awesome!
Watchmen is an epic comic book made into an epic film. Can't wait for the DVD in 4 months.
The watchmen was definitely a viewing treat.Directed by Zack Snyder, (known for 300) definitely gave an outstanding action pack performance to the set.Although I'm I have little knowledge of the novel series the movie tells it's tale well and is worth the ticket fees.
Although many "Hero" films have become little more than a formula for financial gain, this film is one of the few that truly gives all of its love to the fans. Just like the Comics, The Watchmen is Faithful, fun and one of the best films in many years.
The movie had all the right plot elements, but left out much of the character development that made the comic book memorable. Still, a good ride.
The plot was interesting and the effects were great. I could have done with a little bit less slow motion and a little more information on what made these particular people so special. Overall, worth the time and money to see it in the theater.
This movie has to be one of my favorite "Super Hero" movies and my favorite graphic novel. It's surprising how accurate the movie is with the graphic novel. Very little is left out of the movie.
This movie takes a group of vigilantes and challenges them with a series of question. What draws the line between vengeance and justice? Are people worth saving? Each of the vigilantes question why they were doing what they did, wasting their life for other people. It's a great movie and highly suggest it. If you're looking for a movie with mindless action, go rent a movie like "Spiderman." If you want a real movie, you'd spend the money to see Watchmen. It's great.
Watchmen is simply the most faithful comic book adaptation ever. Considering the incredible source material it is based on, it goes without saying that the Watchmen film is good. So good that I will be purchasing what ever deluxe edition Blu-Ray that Warner Bros. puts out. Considering that I almost never buy Blu-Rays, consider this a gushing review from me.
I liked watchmen. I like that Xbox more. Plz. :)
As a person that truly enjoyed the graphic novel, the Watchmen film was, in my opinion, all that it could've been. Entertaining and as faithful as possible. Great scenery, acting and feel. I'm glad I decided to watch it after-all.
Watchmen was an excellent movie for fans of the comic book, had 5 out of 6 amazing actors for main characters (Silk Spectre not so good), and a soundtrack that is hit and miss, with terrible and ingenious incorporations throughout. The caveat being: to anyone unfamiliar with Watchmen, it's almost impenetrable.
Looked good, but it wasn't as good as it could've been. It focused too much on the main characters and plot and not on the side stories. The music drowning out the dialogue was also a poor choice. Manhattan being turned into a tragic hero was very disappointing.
The movie we all wanted, where Rorschach and the Comedian kick ass! A good recreation of the novel, but can something be “too true” to the source material? Well, blue flaccid penis, cinema-style love scenes and a weird snarf-thing all make this movie just a little too much.
The film was beautifully adapted from its graphic novel counterpart; unfortunately fans may not appreciate all of the subtle changes, including its revamped ending. Visually the movie nears perfection, though some long fight scenes tend to drag on and on. Over all it’s very impressive and fun.
Zach Snyder and his crew did an absolutely phenomenal job with the Watchmen. The film managed to capture the personalities of each individual character perfectly, and was extremely faithful to the novel overall. Summing up the movie adaption of Watchmen requires more than 50 words.
Two and a half hours of intense, sensory mind explosion, Watchmen rises to the occasion with panel to panel accuracy. Snyder understood the daunting task before him and blessed fans with phenomenal casting and out of this world set-pieces. However: Bubastis, what the Hell are you doing here?
As a fan of the series, I thought this movie to be one of the best book-to-movie translations ever. Although there were some deviations from the comic and lame jokes added in, this has struck a chord as one of my favorite movies!
I thought the movie was fantastic...but I can't compare it to the comic. Then again, I also won't compare Hamlet to the comic...because it just isn't fair. For what movie was though it was great.
Watchmen was condensed/modified almost perfectly to work as a film. Nitpicking aside, overall the experience covered the trade paperback's essence very well. IMO, the ending actually trumps the original work. For all the Silk Spectre haters, even though she does fall flat in the movie, she ties everything/everyone together.
Very well done.
I liked that they stuck to the story except for the ending.
The ending for this made a lot more sense, but I would've liked to see a giant creature from another dimension :(
Overall, AWESOME.
Top superhero films out there to date!
If the biggest fault you can give a movie is being too much like the groundbreaking novel/comic that spawned it, I define that as success. While altering pieces for the masses, it maintained the ideal of its predecessor and upheld the turmoil of it's human heroes and global message.
I liked it alot. I thought it was super accurate, besides the ending of course, to the graphic novel.
Watchmen is a bold attempt to move the superhero movie into a more serious, darker genre. While having fantastic effects and a good story line, it is hampered by cheezy dialog and gruesome violence. I still consider it a good movie and appreciate the effort taken with the source material.
Obviously the most faithful comicbook movie... well, ever. I can't praise some of the "Snyder liberties" that were taken, but a solid flick nonetheless.
I have some theory on how Watchmen the movie was cursed to fail at some quantum level. Legal issues, time, production costs and oh yeah, how difficult it is to emulate the original comic's storytelling that made it so beautiful.
Watchmen succeeds as a superhero movie and as a movie that questions the feasibility of superheroes. The problem is, there isn't time both both. The lulls in action make the movie feel slow sometimes, and the extended action create time constraints that result in plot compromises. Still, it's worth watching.
Beyond amazing, i will never forget the movie in my life, with all the heroes and action it is unforgetable.
Stayed true to the comic, music fit the era, which was great, scenery was spot on. Way too much weiner, and an alternate ending that worked.
The Watchmen may be the best graphic novel adapted to movie. The differences between the novel and movie are minor compared to other comic book/graphic novel movies, which makes it the best movie in its category.
The movie was good. I liked a lot of it but they had to change the ending, like wheres the squid. Well the movie was entertaining and Dr. Manhattan rocks.
i enjoyed the movie also
I was one of the people saw the movie before I read the graphic novel, and I thought it was great. I felt that there was never a dull moment, as it had great pacing. The only complaint I had was the music, it didn't seem to fit it at some points of the movie, mainly "Hallelujah" during the love scene on the ship. Other than that, I would say overall it was a great adaptation and best movie I've seen in a long while.
This is not your average superhero movie. A must-see film. The Story was interesting, the actors were amazing, The music was different, the sex scene felt a bit too long, but overall an amazing movie.
It is an alright movie, however, may not be for hardcore fans.
Watchmen is a visual masterpiece. The movie offers as much, or as little, detail the viewer desires to see. Watchmen tries to maintain strong ties to the graphic novel, which may please many fanboys, but may also disorient the casual viewer. Overall, Watchmen is definitely worth a viewing.
Watchmen was a fantastic movie. The adaptation was very faithful to the GN. I also thought that any changes they made made a lot of sense. I give this film 2 thumbs up!
Watchmen was like one of those college weekend buses. You’re all excited to get on the bus. Things get interesting when you start chatting up the hot chick beside you. But all she talks about is how daddy didn’t get her “stuff”. You say a prayer as the trip is almost done, only to find out you lost your wallet. Back home, you tell everyone you had a blast.
Good movie.
I absolutely loved it, and this coming from a long time fan of the comic. I didn't miss the squid at all. It's a shame most people aren't ready for male nudity on screen, the laughter from the audience couldn't be contained. You'd think they'd get used to it after seeing it 20 times or so. Luckily I was still able to enjoy myself. Thanks for the contest. :)
Excellent movie. It stayed true to the graphic novel. Even though they changed the ending, I felt it made more sense. This will be a classic in my book.
Watchmen kicks massive blue culo! The fictional alternative look at our history made me think about the whole time continuum. The soundtrack greatly complimented the scenes. Just like a comic book, the opening is framed for us to put the story together, which I thought was a great idea.
I enjoyed the film thoroughly, and didn't even really mind the changed ending. The film stayed true to the film and was able to convey the same sense of emotion and depth. I was very impressed with the film overall, and would give it a 9/10.
I liked the movie... too...
yeah
I like winning
As a fan of the comic, I really enjoyed the movie, and I liked the fact while the ending was changed, it was made more relevant to today’s world at the same time. The movie did a great job with the characters, and overall, it was really good. 5/5
It's hard to fit Watchmen into a single film. However, other than the changes made to Rorschach's origin, and the change made to the ending, I found the film spectacular. Definitely going in my blu-ray collection.
The movie? Hit and miss. Visually appealing; Jackie Earle Haley = wow; disjointed; bad soundtrack; poor casting, despite Manhattan, Rorschach, and Comedian. Demonizing of Manhattan was a major downer. What was wrong with Squid? Unnecessarily slow, as in motion.
An enticingly epic portrayal of an unusual group of masked heroes that divulges the audience of what mental anguishes shaped each of their demeanors while showing us what each has to sacrifice in order to uphold what they believe in. This is definitely not for the faint of heart.
I went into Watchmen not sure what to expect and left very impressed. It was highly stylized and had a great, intriguing plot; it really makes me want to read the book now, because as good as the movie was, the book is always better.
The movie was amazing, one of the best superhero movies in a long time besides Dark Knight.
Looked fantastic, too bad the music was almost uniformly awful and some actors had to ruin it by talking. A superficial action movie that missed the intent and importance of the original. What do you call it when you undermine something subversive? Subsubvert? Upvert?
Good Movie. Comic Masterpiece. A must see. Go watch. You won't regret!
It was entertaining.
For someone who has read the novel I admit i was skeptical at first, but I admit the movie was nothing short of amazing. The only problem I had is because of the nerd I am I noticed every little difference between the novel and its move adaptation. Snyder did an spectacular job.
It's a great movie if you can understand the various layers and textures that people (heroes or otherwise) are made of. It's covered in a realistic grime that most mediums of storytelling at present don't want to show so openly--the truth of man's nature. I loved it for that.
Watchmen is a visually impressive movie that holds relatively true to the comic; some changes were needed to facilitate it being in a movie. However, some things feel left out, like Bubastis, Tales of the Black Freighter, etc. It was wonderfully cast, except for Ozymandias, and was a good movie.
One, that is such a sweet 360 skin in the black and yellow.
Two, I loved the film; I just would they would have expanded more on Dr. M and his departure from humanity... so I wouldn't have to deal with all the "blue penis" comments from people who haven't read the novel.
I loved the movie, true to the fantastic comic book.
they move was okay but they cut out to much form the book and would of liked a older visual style like in the books not so frank millier-ish
Based on the graphic novel, Watchmen is a change from the ordinary superhero remakes. Watchmen is the best in its class featuring beautiful camera shots, decent story, and multiple action shots. The deviations from the book to the movie are noticeable, but are welcomed. In the end, I can't wait until the dvd releases, along with all the bonus content we've grown to love.
As a person who has never read the graphic novel, I have to say I loved the movie. It was very long, but I never felt like the movie was dragging on, nor did I want it to be over any time soon.
I think the movie aside from not having the monster at the end of it, kept pretty true to the characters, and the graphic novel itself. I'd definitely go see it again.
Arg, my last comment was too long. My bad for not reading directions. Truncated review: Loved it.
I think Watchmen was a very good film. I liked the part with Rorschach in the prison. He is cool.
The theatrical release of Watchmen stays very faithful to the aesthetic of the graphic novel, though some of the novel's story lines and characters had to be either truncated or removed. Recommended for fans of the book, if only as fodder for discussion.
I believe the movie was a masterpiece, and best adaption I have ever seen, a sure fan favorite and a great film for fans and newcomers alike
I liked Watchmen a lot. It kind of gave me a somewhat similar vibe as 300, which makes sense because the same person did both movies. I never read the novel, but the movie was awesome. Rorschach is the best
Hearing the line, "You're locked in here with me!" would be inappropriate of me to talk about how that made me feel. Being one of the crazed fans who has read the graphic novel several times, I loved the movie adaptation. Watchmen is simply a beautifuly indescribable film.
Remember how you thought The Watchmen couldn't translate into a motion picture? You were dead wrong... Aside from some obviously neccesary plot changes, there has never been a more true comic adaptation to film. Snyder has raised the bar with this piece of work.
Not as good as the comic book
The Watchmen movie was a very well put together adaptation for today's audience. Without changing some details, the movie would have made no sense to the average audience.
Watchmen is a story of Heros that suffer a loss of one of their own, and then turns into a detective, who done it, with ups and downs, and surprises, and one AWESOME dream sequence. Even though the ending was questionable, all in all, its a good movie.
Easily the best super hero movie released, I give it five blue Phallus' out of five!
I thought that it was a great film, but then again I loved the movie. My only problem, and most of my friend's problems, was that it was not accessible for the non-initiated.
Great film! Classic action and unique characters.
As someone who has never read the graphic novel, I have to say I loved the movie. It was very long, but I never found myself wishing it was over. Definitely a must see.
There were certainly drawbacks to the film -- too long, too much removed, some par performances, etc. But at the end of the day, Jackie Earl Haley was fantastic and the story was (and is) one of the best GN stories ever. See at least once.
Having read the graphic novel just prior to watching the movie, I couldn't help but feel disappointed that so much was left out. It was a good movie, but it pales in comparison to the novel.
I thought it was an extremely faithful adaptation that was a bit too long because of it's complexity.
Overall an abridged film but not enough to fit the graphic novel's complexities. For all it's fault it had promise. But not enough to carry the film as a whole.
A little too much slow motion, but not enough to really hurt the movie. Too little Rorschach, but he could've carried a movie by himself. The criticism of Nite Owl and Silk Spectre's subplot is totally overblown. They were the perfect element of humanity that allowed viewers to actually relate to the comic book elements onscreen. I'd say it was a solid B+.
I felt it was very good because it was so accurate to the graphic novel. So many scenes looked like they were pulled directly out of the book itself.
Watchmen was an incredible film, however it bordered on pretentious occasionally. It tried so hard to be grand, and for the most part it was grand, with some exceptions.
I loved this movie because a truer adaptation could not exist.
Simple as that. Seen it 4 times and counting.
The movie catered more to those who were already fans of the graphic novel and, by doing so, may have alienated the casual viewer. Still enjoyable, but more fanservice than a masterpiece of it's own.
Zack Snyder's Watchmen stayed as true to form as it could have with the exception of the ending, slight alterations and a few omissions. The "mainstream" ending may have been the only improvement over the graphic novel. The complexity of each scene was fantastic and the movie warrants multiple viewings.
grat movie but the novall was beter in fact it my favrit noval!!!!!
Watchmen really should have been two movies instead of one. The first half, everything before Rorschach was arrested, was great; a combination of superhero fantasy and noir detective story. But the second half seemed rushed; example, the revealing of Silk Spectre’s father. At least the twist ending saved the movie.
Great movie that shows off the comic book.
Not your typical superhero movie, but fantastic despite, or perhaps because of this fact. Don't bring the kids. It's incredibly faithful to the comic despite the changed ending, with many scenes recreated almost exactly, exciting comic fans, but also robbing it of mystery; they will know exactly what comes next.
I loved the movie, great use of slow motion and fast motion. Watchmen was certainly different in the story department and that is the reason why this movie stood out for me. It was such a good movie that i am compelled to watch it again in IMAX this time.

Awesome movie, Warner Brothers went above and beyond my expectations for this film. I went in thinking it was gonna be a friendly spiderman movie and came out very pleased :)
The same feelling as the comic, a soundtrack that reflects the spirit of it. Not great actors, but they're compensated by the visual effects and the spot-on direction of action scenes. If never complain about lenght in LOTR you'll absolutley love this film. This flick is a hit or miss.
Very good movie. Only thing that was bad was that it was pure fanservice. I can't imagine seeing it without reading the novel. Too many details.
"No. Not even in the face of Armageddon. Never compromise"
- Rorschach
Many believed that this movie would be another "horrible adaptation of a classic franchise"....They were wrong...From the narration of Rorschach to emotional struggles of Dr.Manhattan, this film what others fear to do...do there muse justice.
The visual look had me from the get go. Sure there were somethings that were not so great from the movie like some of the song choices during key moments, but the movie was very enjoyable non the less.
In my opinion, this movie accomplished what it is supposed to do: Entertain. I enjoyed it, and instead of complaining that it had too much of this or too little of that, I think we should appreciate that it even got made at all. That the movie is even in theaters is nothing short of a miracle.
This is the best "super" hero movie in a long time. While not as action filled as X2 or Spider Man, Watchmen makes up for it by being thought provoking and full of uncut humanity.
Sweet Watchmen 360! Love that Silk Spectre image.
Overall its a great movie. The effects were breathtaking. The music selection was amazing and fitting. Too much greatness to fit in 500 words.
However, there was too much slow-motion for my taste. I wish they didn't modernize the costumes so much, as I believe it should look like the hero's made it themselves. The director used to novel for TOO much guidance. Sure fans praised this, but it would have been good to see the director bring panels to life using his own mind.
Visually stunning, The Watchmen tries hard to hit the literary feel of the graphic novel. It misses but the attempt is still interesting and enjoyable to watch.
It’s an amazing movie, based on a perfect book. The acting on Manhattan, Rorschach, Nite Owl II, the Comedian were flawless. But alas, it was a fan service. They lost some of the smaller plotlines, but still, the story was greatly translated. It was a masterpiece for the ages.
True to the comic book
Even though the movie and the comic book have their difference I believe the movie was a great adaptation of the original work. The story and mood was kept mostly intact and it was not converted into something just for the general public. I loved it.
I loved The Watchmen but felt like it had a few flaws. Rorschach was portrayed masterfully and had some of the most memorable scenes. I just wish the ending scene wasn't changed so drastically.
Dr. Manhattan's penis wasn't as noticeable as people told me it was.
Movie was excellent, especially for anyone who read the book. Non-readers seem to find it a bit long and drawn out, but otherwise enjoyable. Visually stunning (except for annoying grain filter) and surprisingly true to the comic. A must for fans.
An excellent cast, an excellent director, and excellent movie. I wasn't happy the squid was missing, but I still enjoyed it.
The Watchmen stays true to the novel, to a point, without spoiling anything for those who have not seen it, certain parts are ommited, but overall it keeps the spirit.
I was nervous coming in to it, but they really pulled it off. I was completely surprised at how good it was. One of the best comic book adaptations ever.
I was really surprised at how much I enjoyed the film. I went in the theatre with thoughts of, "there is no way this film will live up to the novel, it's just too epic." I came out of the theatre with a smile on my face and thoughts of, "well what do you know, that was actually a great interpretation!" Yea, there was some bad acting from Malin Akerman, but Jackie Earl Haley's portrayal of Rorschach was brilliant. My biggest gripe with the film was that I felt nothing towards the characters who died when New York City was destroyed, mainly because the movie foccused on the main characters, insted of the secondary ones. Overall though, the movie is a fantastic representation of the graphic novel. Plus, these prizes are amazing!
An excellent adaptation, the film did a fair job of capturing the essence of the novel. Purists beware!
I had high hopes for the movie and for the most part it didn't let me down. It was the best version of "Watchmen" that we could have gotten in 2 1/2 hours. Much of the comic's complexity was lost in translation, so be sure to read it!
I was so happy with the casting choices! Rorschach was so spot on. It was amazing!
The movie is a catch-22: The complex storyline can only appeal in movie form to fans who already understand it, but those same fans can be the harshest critics. I found myself in the former group.
I read the Watchmen comic book in 2006 when it was reissued as a leather-bound edition. I thought the movie did a good job of capturing the feel of the comic without adding too much. Also, Silk Spectre II is va-va-vooom!
If you are the type that likes your preconceptions challenged, a person who can say they like films like 2001: A Space Odyssey, Full Metal Jacket, Blade Runner, or Apocalypse Now; then this film is for you. Because while I enjoyed those films, I loved this one with every fiber of my being.
Watchmen was quite an amazing movie, as good or possibly even better than The Dark Knight. Some acting could have been better, for example Mailin Akerman, but I did not think that it sufficiently detracted from the film to make my opinion of it any worse. I felt the music complimented the scenery and actions greatly. The action itself was thrilling and left no room for doubt that a lot of time and money was put into this film. I thought I would be disappointed when watching this because I was a fan of the original comic series, but I was surprisingly satisfied with the way the characters were portrayed and how the story went down.
Extremely Impressed! The movie is a great accompaniment to the Watchmen graphic novel. It fun to see how well scenes compare with the novel. They only had to change a few things for time, flow, and made a slight alteration to the ending to aviod making the movie look silly.
Watchmen is shockingly faithful to the original material, perhaps to a fault. The direct panel-for-panel nature of a lot of the movie may leave those who have not read the book feeling that much of the subtext is sailing past them. Despite this, it succeeds brilliantly.
I...err also enjoyed the movie.
While intelligently directed and beautiful to look, at times the movie seems to drag out for to long. Still very entertaining IF you are familiar with the source material.
Mostly well acted and brilliantly constructed. I highly await the directors cut. Great, maybe not, but one important film.
Great film, action packed, good.
Watchmen is a shining example of the future of film making. In 1987 the Watchmen comic floored comic fans. Changing the future of comics forever. Now, in 2009, Watchmen fans will experience that feeling all over again.
Wow, this 360 is almost as visually stunning as the movie its themed after!
The movie was a pretty amazing feat in successfully adapting a very complex and layered graphic novel. Only downside was unexplained character introductions like Bubastis.
Overall, awesome!
Im still reading the comic. Almost done. Can't stand my friends spoiling me the whole movie.
I thought it was pretty good, only one problem they dragged it on for way to long. They added to many things that were unneeded.
Watchmen is very unique and well known in the world of comics. This is no exception in the world of movies either. When Zack Snyder introduced 300 in 2007, he showed a knew realm of how fighting scenes can be done. Afterwords he brought his talent to Watchmen. You will recognize his style if you have seen 300.
For fans of the comic, it stands fairly true to the books. Some scenes are word by word, but you will find some differences. If you haven't read the comics, no worries. The movie isn't too hard to follow, but I would highly recommend picking up the books.
Although the movie may have deviated from the original graphic novel a bit, it is truly a masterpiece that may feel strange to watch, strange in a good, very enjoyable way. Although said to impossible to film, many fans can agree that Watchmen Director, Zack Snyder, did a wonderful job.
I think that this movie did a good job depicting the graphic novel. Of course, I could have done without the blue item always dangling but what can you do.
A Masterpiece. For fans of the comic, it stands fairly true to the books. Some scenes are word by word, but you will find some differences. If you haven't read the comics, no worries. The movie isn't too hard to follow, but I would highly recommend picking up the books.
Probably the best adaptation of Watchmen we could have. Think about what could have been or what would have been had it not been in the hands of Mr. Snyder. Visual stunning, very entertaining.
Watchmen may initially seem the perfect superhero adaptation, yet the longer it drags on, the more apparent it is that while Snyder achieved a faithful surface recreation of the comic’s panels, he failed to capture its depth and moral ambiguity. What before was thoughtful and poignant now seems merely glib.
This. Is. AWESOME!!!
A masterpiece of our generation. a brilliantly displayed vision of an alternate 1985. The thing that blew me away was the use of colours from the Graphic Novel, This made you feel like you were reliving in the comic that you've read and loved for some many years.
I loved Watchmen. I'd read the book, and I wasn't disappointed. Yes, the minor changes worked well with the movie. I was annoyed that there was no squid, but I accepted it. I watched the movie, and went to see it again right after it finished.
I went into Watchmen expecting another 300 (which I didn't like all that much) and was pleasantly surprised. While I felt it took a while to get going, once it did it was awesome. The prison scene was my favourite.
The film was faithful to the original novel to a fault. Fans of Moore's work will be pleased, with the exception of the faithfully depicted giant blue schlong. My biggest complaint was that Leonard Cohen's Hallelujah was a horrible music choice for the love scene.
The movie was faithful to the comic, but i did get the feeling if you hadn't read the comic it would make little sense (in particular the opening sequence) beyond that visually it was stunning, good acting, and even though it lost the squid it was an enjoyable film.
Screw 50 words. I'm writing a haiku.
Watchmen was awesome.
Seeing with my dad- awkward.
Naked jon, nightmares.
Watchmen was the closest I've ever seen to watching a real comic book on screen. It was like the the movie had a colorist. The cast was amazing as well and the few changes from the original worked for the movie.
Good movie; exceptions include Ozymandias looking like a gay Martin Short and Silk Spectre's... erm... "acting" Beside that; very enjoyable.
I personally thought the movie was fantastic. I myself didnt read the comic but I went with a friend that did read it. He told me the movie was a good representation of the book. I thought the acting was great along with the soundtrack. The leadup to the ending is very suspenseful and unexpected. I definately plan on buying the movie when it is released.
Man, for a different ending, I thought it worked perfectly...and it seemed so much more suited to film. Overall, really enjoyed it.
besides missing the fantastic random squid/octopus alien from the comics i really liked the changes they made to the ending of the movie, which surprises me because most comic to movie story changes are always AWFUL, but this one was FANTASTIC :)
Also Silk Spectre 1(youth) and 2 are so hot in those outfits!
Watchmen the movie is good because it is more than just a movie. Like Star Wars before it, the full depth and draw of the film is in the backstories and well developed world. If anything it will spark an interest in the graphic novel. And that’s a good thing.
I was fully entertained, but was it perfect? No, but there isn't any adaptation they could have done that would have been perfect. It was worth watching and it will be worth buying on bluray. Sometimes you have to ignore the fact that a movie like Watchmen doesn't necessarily work as a film in order to realize you just need to relax and enjoy what it is giving you.
A very interesting movie, if not long. Fans of the comic will love it, and people who've never really heard of it won't get it. Even though some was changed, it's still a great film to watch on a boring day.
A true masterpiece. The progression of story combined with intense action constantly kept me on the edge of my seat. It did the graphic novel justice and so much more.
The opening montage set to Bob Dylan's "The Times They Are a-Changin," sets the theme for an intelligent comic book adaptation in Watchmen. It tells us of a world without hope, and whether we have found ourselves in that world years after the Cold War.
I had read the book before seeing the movie, but I'm not in the "it revolutionized everything I thought I knew about anything" school of thought, I just thought it was an entertaining read. The movie struck me as the same. Entertaining, but not ground-breaking.
Do you think I am so comic book villain? That I would tell you my plan if there was a remote chance you could stop me. I won the Xbox 35 minutes ago.
I really enjoyed the movie quite a lot. It stayed loyal to the comic (mostly) and I never was bored while watching.
The movie isn't as good as the graphic novel, but no one expected it to be. That it isn't as good as other superhero movies is the big disappointment.
I saw this with my sister and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I thought the ending was okay, but the music was just great.
Heres my "Movie Chart of AWESOME"

~Gremlins~
Thats how great this movie was. Best movie of the millennium.
Well, Watchmen is in my opinion the best superhero adaptation out there. its true to the comic near shot for shot.
I figured people would compare it to dark knight. but they're both great different reasons and people should respect that. Alas, tis my favorite true adapted film.
A good movie that reflected a lot of the novel's high points. Although the ending is different, the movie's ending makes just as much sense and is equally enjoyable.
I can't wait to see the movie.
never read the book but the movie was incredible
Watchmen was well adapted as it ever could be for a comic dubbed "unfilmable". Although there's an undeniable shift from daring to extremely campy, it still presents a story line which gives out the same message which the comic delivers. Nothing ever ends.
Enthralling movie with some great themes. Its main downfall was its length.
The book was awesome, the movie was nearly as good but this skin is just great. Good job :)
Watchmen was well adapted as it ever could be for a comic dubbed "unfilmable". Although there's an undeniable shift from daring to extremely campy, it still presents a story line which gives out the same message which the comic delivers. Nothing ever ends.
The Watchmen was a great movie! Perhaps one of my favorite DC movies to come so far. Overall I would give it about a 5/5 lol because its that damn cool.
The Watchmen is a really interesting story. The twist at the end was really well done. Music was good. LOL at the fat NightOwl. Will pick up the graphic novel later to see how it compares.
Watchmen was the supposed un-filmable graphic novel. Turns out they were wrong. The movie was very similar to the book but in this case it wasn't a bad thing. The action scenes were brutally beautiful. And the casting was perfect for the characters. Rorschach was my personal favorite in this.
The most faithful comic-to-film translation yet. Great for old and new fans alike. Soundtrack is dodgy in places, but overall this is an amazing work.
I went into it never hearing of the comic, but I thought it tried too hard. It was very confusing and overly-complicated, but the style was well done, and it was at least "good"...not "great".
After reading and loving the graphic novel, I was concerned the movie just wouldn't live up to the hype. I must say I was pleasantly surprised! It lived up to my expectations and some.
I thought the watchmen was a good film not the best ever, it didn't even break into my top ten. I will probably buy it on blu-ray when it comes out, and if I have a chance watch it on I-max before it is gone. I suggest others do the same!
I'm not really a graphics novel type, and probably won't get still, but the concept of it makes you think. What if heroes decide not to be heroes anymore?
Good work Mr. Moore but stop being so angry about the movies that are from your books. We all know that you aren't doing it for the commercialism but with the industry slowly going down, your work and others do help it stay afloat for another generation that would rather read a book on the screen rather than go to the store and pick it up.
I thought it was a pretty good movie overall. The soundtrack was a little weird and it left a couple things unanswered for how long it was, but I enjoyed it and would recommend it.
When seeing an adaptation I like to remember to judge a thing for what it is in a of itself. Separated from questions of fidelity to the original source the movie of really quite good. Decent acting coupled with visceral action and an interesting plot. Highly recommended.
Is 'Watchmen' the best adaptation of a graphic novel ever made? You're damn right it is. 5/5
Snyder's obsession with visual precision gives us some of the lushest, deepest frames ever put to film. The characters and plot may waver at times- fading in and out of relevance, but there's not a wide shot in the whole movie you wouldn't be proud to hang on your wall.
The first act of Watchmen was astounding: visceral, driving, darkly poetic. But the movie unravels to an ending that's neither well shot or interesting, as Snyder tries to make the muddy morality of the graphic novel into something more black-and-white. Worth seeing once for the ride.
The Watchmen was awesome. It had everything I could ever hope for in a movie. Good looking women, killer fight scenes, and an in depth story. Seriously, check it out.
It was a great adaptation of the novel to the big screen; the twist was grittier and less obtrusive to the suspension of one's disbelief, while the general story was truncated for easier consumption. However, the movie will disappoint those who are expecting another super-powered action flick.
I've been a fan of the Watchmen for a very long time, and my son just started getting into the novels. I think he would love this, and really would like to see the reaction on his face if he sees this.
Visually one of the best comic book adaptations. The Watchmen movie did what was thought to be impossible. Making Dr. Manhattan, Rorschach and the rest come alive is an amazing feat. It stayed true to the ethos of the comic and maintained it's gritty atmosphere.
I think one of the best things about the film is that it has inspired many people to go back and read the original comics, which were critically acclaimed but never entered the mainstream.
Wow. I have yet to read the graphic novel, but I definitely will now. Perhaps the greatest comic-to-movie adaption to date. I don't mind long movies, but the large soda got to me after a while. Anyways, 5/5. Thanks.
I never read the graphic novel, but I loved the movie. It incorporates dark themes with a complex plot, blurs the line between good and evil, the scenes were just like the graphic novel, great characters with interesting back stories, an amazing movie. It is a masterpiece.
So true to the source material that it was just as uncomfortable to sit through as it was to read. Which means it will be just as accessible, that is to say never a blockbuster, but a delightful feast of gray morality for those who put forth the effort.
The movie was very well made. I honestly liked it more than any conversion done of late. However, those who would be looking for a pure action movie will be disappointed.
Its mind-blowing! A superhero movie for adults. Its accessible to new fans and old fans alike. Set in the 80's with an 80's feel. Complete with 1 hit wonders and cold war fears. Now Modernized for modern fears like terrorism and things we don't quite understand.
Pretty cool contest! Looking forward to seeing the movie.
The Watchmen is an atypical super hero movie. Not only did it feature a bleak setting, but it definitely avoided a cliche fairy tale ending. Zack Snyder did an excellent job bringing the depth and grit of the Graphic Novel to the silver screen. A-
A great companion to the graphic novel. A good movie overall, even with the changes to the story, which were necessary. A fantastic movie I would recommend endlessly.
I have to say this movie was fantastic. I really appreciated how close it stayed to the comic, or at least how i remember the comic. I would say this is the best comic movie so far. sure the dark know was better, but that wasn't an actual comic converted into a movie, it was inspired from loads of different comics. The special effects were awesome, along with the costumes and sets. I think the story was also really good, I think it's a perfect answer to the question, what would super heros be like in real life and how would they affect history? Fantastic, go see it.
Ohh yeah, cool.
Great movie overall, would liked to have seen it go on for about another hour or so. Very nice work and thank you for the entertainment!
The movie was startling. The cinematography was superb, the soundtrack was spot on, and the casting was picture perfect. It also happened to have an amazing story. It is easily among my top 5 movies of this decade.
The Watchmen was an okay movie, probably worth at least a rental. People had different expectations since it was a superhero movie. Some critics felt it wasn't as deep as the comic book. However, after experience both movie and graphic novel, I still believe that neither are deep in anyway.
As the author of the comic book said, this is a book that cannot be filmed. Nothing has rung more true for this tale of ordinary people performing gaudy and often times overly dramatic asininity. Who watches the watchmen? Who would?
I thought watchmen was absolutely amazing. I did however read the novel too. I prefer the novel's ending but it was still an amazing film.
The visionary Zack Snyder has made the "unfilmable" graphic novel to the big screen. Along with the visual attraction, Watchmen also brings the bittering alternate history to the so-called "conspiracy" of the death of the sadistic superhero, The Comedian.
I thought it was a really good "comic book movie". However, I hold the graphic novel higher then comic books because Alan Moore is such a fantastic writer. I was also very pleased with the casting. Legendary Pictures is an incredible production company.
Certainly not one's average comic book movie, Watchmen is a film designed not only to entertain, but to make you think. However, reading the graphic novel beforehand is a necessity to fully enjoy this movie; although it's a very faithful adaptation, it's really more of a companion to the comics.
Trying to review the Watchmen is hard, I watched it constantly comparing it to the graphic novel I had only recently read. To me it was a fabulous adaption keeping the plot, pacing and almost all the scenes from the original. But does that make it good?
I loved this movie. It was great to see the comic, or parts of it at least, come to life. I actually thought that all of the casting was fantastic. The person I went to see it with hasn't read the comic, but really enjoyed it as well. Worth a view or two.
i went into the movie with relatively high hopes and came out really enjoying it. I liked how they almost did a "realistic" view of superheros, how the right thing isn't always black and white. when i heard 99 red balloons, i also realized how much i loved the soundtrack.
Watchmen Review:
A good introduction to the Watchmen universe for those uninitiated but only an adequate adaptation for fans. Here's hoping for a 5 hour director's cut BD/DVD.
"Watchmen" is a film that you will either love or hate. I personally loved it. The flashy visuals compensated for the sometimes silly storyline. It's a good rental movie.
Watchmen was a superb adaptation. The majority of the changes from the graphic novel were enjoyable and even made scenes more interesting.
Watchmen did a great job of capturing the most important parts of the graphic novel, and translating it to film. That said, it could be confusing to someone who has never read the original, and will probably be hated by the "hardcore" fans for not including every shot, despite the fact that it is almost three hours long. All in all, I think that it serves as a great companion piece to the graphic novel.
Watchmen movie is the Graphic novel come to life from the very pages of the comic itself, a very faithful adoption that hits the right spots, the casting was bang on (my favourite being Rorschach "I have to use the bathroom" hehe)zack snyder did a fantastic job and fought all the way to do this movie justice so thank you Zack from the bottom of this fans heart and i'm off to watch the movie again!
The first comic based to movie to truly appreciate its audience rather than rely on "Hollywood Flash" to sell tickets, a much needed breath of fresh air.
The watchmen was incredible... from the well done opening credit scenes to the final - I was hooked. Some were disappointed based off the book; being an avid fan of the book I simply loved it. Zack Snyder hit a home run on this one!
Watchmen is an immersive experience complete with complex characters and breath taking cinematography. The transition from graphic novel to silver screen has been extremely generous, producing compositions that will captivate even the most critical regulars. A warning to those new to Watchmen: This is NOT your typical super hero film!
It adhered to the comic very well, perhaps too well. The story was jumbled for Watchmen newcomers. As for long time fans of Watchmen, it was a great new way to experience it.
To me, it wasnt as awesome as the graphic novel but it still delivers. The action scenes was more that what I expected with joints being broken and you can see the bones. That was awesome!
Watchman... I've yet to see a comic-related movie made by anyone besides the marvel studios that has been worth the money. They just hold their movies to such a higher standard than all these others... this one included. Just my opinion though, good review as always.
Good movie. Never read the comics but liked the film.
I saw the movie and it was spectacular. For a comic that ran for a whole year, being able to grab the essence of the book in 2 and 1/2 hours is a great accomplishment. Vibrant visuals and stupendous sound made this movie a real treat to watch.
Watchmen movie was better than expected but still not as good as comic. Nothing will beat Watchmen comic!!
As a fan of the comic, I think Zack Snyder really did it justice, and truely made the comic come alive on the screen.
Rorschach was extremely well captured, This made the movie for me, To see him at the end was truly amazing. The emotion portrayed by the Comedian and Rorschach instantly made the movie for me.
Even if you are not a fan, those two roles will define this movie. Thats all.
This movie is pure genius
Watchmen was so spot-on to the novel. The changes they made were simply to make for a better movie, but still kept the message and the tone of the novel intact.
Of course the visuals were amazing, but it still felt like something was missing something. It wasn't as thought provoking as the novel, but it had boobies so that was good. Overall the movie did its job to entertain in a unique way.
p.s. blue penis!!
One of the first great movies of the year. It did the best it could to incorporate as much as possible from the novel, and what came out was most likely the best Watchmen movie possible. A must see for just about anyone. 5/5
I'm sad the Fresno Falcons are no more and what a sweet XBOX.
Yay Watchmen
I was worried about this movie going in. I mean this is HOLLYWOOD we are talking about, and these guys know how to screw up a good book. If you wanna try and throw Lord of the Rings at me, I got two words for ya, "Starship Troopers". Ohhhh, that stings doesn't it? A book all about Space Marines in powered assault armor, and HOLLYWOOD cuts out the armor. With that crap-slapper under the skeletons in their closet, I could see them cutting Dr. Manhattan out of the Watchmen.
But Im happy to report that none of that happened. The movie follows the comic like it was a storyboard, with one big twist, but even that twist isn't enough to screw it up. Watchmen is visually spectacular, emotionally gripping and takes the Super Hero genre of movies to places it has never been before.
I do have 1 complaint.
#1: It should have stared Bruce Campbell as the Comedian.
Old guard is dead or dying. New guard is out of work. Big blue swinging junk. Hot sex scene. Nothing like the book at the end. Overall solid four out of five.
I really loved the movie, they did a very good job recreating the comic and source material even though they took certain components out and changed certain parts to make it more comprehensible for the movie masses :D
BRUCE CAMPBELL!!!!!
I feel like the movie was able to add such great personalities to an already great story to make an amazing experience.
The Watchmen was a sick movie. I really liked all the ideas the writer was trying to get across.
Amazing movie, stayed true to the book, and the new ending was better than the book in my opinion.
Stayed true to the best character, Rorschach.
Amazing 360 mod.
Watchmen is not your ordinary superhero flick where everyone lives happily-ever-after. It had just the right amount of blood, gore and nudity; pleasing every college-aged male in the audience having the mentality of a 12 year-old schoolgirl who couldn’t stop herself from giggling every time a blue, CG penis appeared.
Watchmen was an interesting film and was definitely not your typical superhero film. It seems the film could have been definitely better. 4/5 IMO
I had not heard of Watchmen before this movie so I have to sum op Watchmen in three words, Giant blue penis. This movie had nothing to offer but giant blue penis. But proper respect has to be given to Dr. Manhattan for hanging long and strong in the Arctic cold.
Watchmen was awesome. It stuck close to the events of the comic, which I love. The story was just as good and the ending, even though it was changed a bit, was every bit as poignant as it was in the comic. I would recommend it.
The film didn't touch me as much on an emotional level as I thought it would, but I applaud the effort. The visuals were quite a feat, and the grown-up, morality-based storyline was refreshing for a comic book film.
What gripped me and my partner the most was the acting; to have so many actors play thier roles to a tee set the bar higher in my eyes and made for a film that ran the emotional gammut. This is one that will be remembered.
I read the novel about three days before seeing the movie. This is one of the few comic/novel to movie adaptations that performs well, they cut corners in the right places for time constraints and managed to get to the point, and the soundtrack was flawless. Worth seeing again.
Watchmen is an ultra-realist (almost) analysis of the psychology of herodom. Understandably lengthy, the movie covers 12 issues of grandiose comic writing.
watchman is a great movie an graphic novel mind anyone i never heard or even read the novel before but when i saw the trailer an read more about it i was hooked into it truly complex story right out of the novel it self fans should see this movie .
Blue Penis.
I read the novel three days before seeing the movie. It remains very loyal to the original story and the few times it isn't is only to cut corners for time while being well paced, and the soundtrack was very appropriate and suitable. Would happily watch again.
Watchmen is probably the most wonderful thing I've seen on the big screen in a very long time. It's sense of style, soundtrack and screen play come together to make something gritty, full of depth and a treat for the senses. The perfect testament to the book, a masterpiece.
Watchmen was a highly entertaining, fast-paced thrill ride of a film packed with a deep, layered story and wonderful stylistic visuals. It followed the graphic novel honorably, and although some alterations were rather grating, it was still incredibly enjoyable and very exciting from beginning to end.
Watchmen is one of the best super hero movies I ever seen. With such a great story and character development, people like me, who didn't read the comic, can enjoy this amazing film. Plus it has hot women in latex, so now you have no excuse not to see it!!
Movie was valiant attempt at a complex graphic novel. But didn't show Dr. Manhattan's omnipresence well. Extraneous prison fight with Silk Spectre and Night Owl in movie version failed to showcase their heroism. Gotta admit, their ending was better. Never made sense that a space octopus wrecked NY.
Though The Watchmen movie strayed from the graphic novel's original content every so often, it still was faithful to the feel and the point as a whole. A well done movie with great special effects is always a breath of fresh air.
Wasn't an easy task, to bring the magic from the Alan Moore's novel, all those pages and dialogues and captions and stories and souls into a 2 hours movie. But Snyder did it. Chapeau.
A great movie, in my own opinion. Though much about the movie can be off-putting to some, those are largely not their target audience. Yet even among them they find they can't stop talking about it. There is no one who can dislike Worschat in it either.
I really enjoyed Watchmen. I felt it got all the main parts of the movie down, while still alluding to some of the less-plot-vital parts for us that have read it before (such as the Comic book kid and newspaper guy). I knew there would be changes, but that made it more enticing, as I wouldn't know exactly what happens next. All around good movie, with and without the graphic novel as comparison.
Watchmen is not an action film, though that's what many will expect. While the actions scenes are great, it's actually a character piece about some uniquely flawed individuals, and the lengths they will go to try and save the world.
As far as comic-book movie adaptations go, this was the best of them. Hell, it was the greatest movie I've seen for a long time.
A good adaption, but missing a good amount of info from the comic that I think was important. Also changing the ending so much seemed uncool.
If possible, see this movie in IMAX. It makes seeing this movie a special event. It's not every day you get to see a 20-foot-tall electric blue penis.
After reading the graphic novel a year ago i had really big espactations for the movie version and it fullfilled it to the most part. For me its most accurate film adaption of the most complex comic. Like the movie version of Lotr. I'm really excited for the dc-bluray version.
The Watchmen graphic novel was an achievement on it's own. Now the movie followed the story perfectly (with a few minor changes). I work at a movie theater and I am so amazed at how awesome it is.
I think Zach Snyder did an awesome job of adapting The Watchmen comic into a live action movie. From the actors/actresses to the color scheme of everything. Having heard that the studios originally wanted to 'update' the story line to a more modern theme (War in Iraq), and still standing strong and making it still mark the Cold War took some great effort on Snyder's part. Thankfully, we will never see the butchered version of the 'updated' and 'more simplified' version of The Watchmen would be if Sam Hamm and Terry Gilliam had finished the original project (gah! they wanted to cast Arnold Schwarzenegger as Doctor Manhattan!).
I thoguht it was an ok movie overall. It did not really live up to the hype though. It got confusing at times and dragged on for way to long.
The Watchmen movie adaptation stays very true to the graphic novel, and all the changes in the storyline seem quite necessary in my opinion. Apart from Silk Spectre II and possibly Ozymandias, the actors truly made the characters come to life. An anticipated movie well worth the wait!
It was as it should have been. A great action movie with some comedy and romance thrown in. Was it the best movie ever, no. But it made for an enjoyable 3 hours, and even gave back story.
As a fan of the graphic novel, one is tempted to fault the unfaithful ending as the biggest flaw, but the simplification of Ozymandias's character really ruined the movie for me. Stick to the Graphic Novel for the best Watchmen experience.
I saw this link on kotaku.com and thought I would give this a shot... I don't have a 360 and that sure is an awesome one. Haven't seen the movie yet, but need to. Read the comic about 2 years ago, loved it... the Murdoch/Rorschach sequences are probably my favorite of the Watchmen comics.
Attention Alan Moore: This is it.
This is your story. These are your characters. This is your graphic novel, in motion, as good as it could have ever possibly have been made in Hollywood. It's probably not enough for you to like it but don't pretend that it's not an ACHIEVEMENT.
The movie itself was well done. There is more a viewer can take from it having read the graphic novel.
Gorgeous visuals make the film a treat for fans of the source material, but those with no knowledge of the novel might be left puzzled sometimes. Still, highly recommended.
Glad I was familiar with the comic, because otherwise I would've been totally lost.
The movie was great. I didn't really mind the new ending. I think Zach Snyder made a really good move changing it. It is something new for Watchmen fans and doesn't make the movie confusing and ridiculous to those who haven't read the graphic novel. Rorschach's mask was absolutely amazing on film. The scenery looked like the comic and all the little details kept me saying "Wow" through out the entire movie. All the characters were portrayed perfectly. It was my favorite movie in a long time.
This movie is definitely a mark for all comic books and books adaptations. It survives to the challenge of making a movie without changing many aspects of the original story. Such feat was only accomplished first, in my opinion, by The Lord of the Rings adaptation, even if in this case they had to crop some scenes.
This movie should now be released with a copy of the comic book, because it's the live action version of the drawings.
I thought it was great. It cut from the book in all the right places, and the reason for the end being changed was a great choice. I can't wait to watch it again.
I found this to be a good movie, but the theme was a bit dated. I believe they story should have been updated from the cold war to a more modern theme. But still a fun story, and great effects.
Although I was a huge fan of the comic book series I didn't think Watchmen would translate to film, mostly because of the ending. I really dug the movie and the tweaked ending. The casting of Rorschach was perfect.
I read the original graphic novel before seeing the movie, and I disagree with the so called "hard core fans." It really doesn't deviate that much from the source material. Certainly not enough to whine about.
It was a great movie.
As a major fan of the graphic novel this movie did it justice and that surprised me to no end. I was a little disappointed that the entire octopus exploding was not in the film and thought that using 9/11 as a reason is a bit of a cop-out but all in all, great film.
Dark, dense, and disturbing. This isn't Iron Man or Spider-Man folks. This is superheroes like you've never seen them.
I purposefully set my expectations low, because I was afraid of the many possibilities that might turn an awesome book into a ho-hum flick. It wasn't. Perhaps most surprising? The gore factor. Least surprising? The 'reworked' ending.
The movie was a violent, visceral, and visually stunning film. That said, as a huge fan of the graphic novel, I felt the vibe of it was not consistant with the original. Good, but not great.
Watchmen is as faithful as a film adaptation can be, while still making a good movie. The heart of the story remains fully intact, but some of the complexity is lost. However, those expecting to see a typical comic book movie may leave dissapointed.
Well-acted Rorschach kicks arse. Some marvelously cg'd blue dong, and some more well-acted Rorschach.
Oh, and some TERRIBLE Nixon makeup. Was the guy from "Frost/Nixon" busy?
I read the graphic novel, bought and watched the Blu Ray of the motion comic and went to see it opening weekend at the IMax...amazing movie. Proper adaptation that stayed close enough to the original to please the Watchmen fanboy in me. My one and only complaint was Dr. Manhattan...in Imax...I swear the on screen penis was larger than a car. But I digress...great movie and a must see for not only comic book fans, movie fans, and gamers...but after being named one of Time Magazine's greatest novels of all time...even literature fans can appreciate the well written and well thought out commentary on modern society during Nixon's presidency. Now back to playing Watchmen: The End is Neigh on my PS3...too bad I don't have a XBox to play it on.
I don't need 50 words to review this movie, just one.
"AWESOME!"
If you haven't seen it, go see it.
If you have seen it, go see it again!
With out having read the graphic novel I loved the movie. I thought it was amazing visually and the story kept me involved for the entire 2 3/4 hours. I hope to see it again soon.
Review: Evil Ozy was obvious, great use of slo-mo, Perfect Rorschach casting, Nice pacing, Great intro flashback scene, BIG BLUE PENIS, Well choreographed fights, seen it 3 times already, teared up at Rorschach's death everytime.
To fans of the novel, The Watchmen is hit or miss. Those who just wanted to see the characters come alive leave happy. Those who wanted a frame-by-frame adaptation might not due to the "artistic liberties" taken. And unfortunately, those unfamiliar with the novel will likely be lost and confused.
I thought that, even though things had to be cut for length or to keep the movie somewhat accessible to those who never read the graphic novel, the movie was enjoyable and done well.
Some purists may contend that the impact from reading the graphic novel was not there in move form, but they need to remember that there were many other versions of the movie put out there; some released as snippets from canceled scripts, others just spoken of on movie/comic websites. I think what we were given is the best possible re-telling of an amazing story.
A difficult film about superheroes that is as far from a standard superhero move that you can possibly get. It's not perfect, but it creates such a vivid picture of a fantastic alternate world that it's hard not to be taken aback. I really enjoyed it.
I'm not familiar with the source material, but it's one of those movies that you have no idea what you're getting into before going to see it. It's much more graphic than I expected, and my wife, who does like the Marvel Comics movies by the way, had no idea what to say about it after we watched it. It's a "gotta see it at least twice to understand it" kind of thing. Overall, I give it a A-/B+.
Overall, I liked it. For a film adaptation of something so convoluted, I think they did a good job of trying to make something comprehensible. There are a few things that I wished that they had included (for instance, more of the scenes with Dr. Long) but yeah, I think it was a job well done.
What I loved about the Watchmen was the reality of it. These are heroes that have failed relationships, deal with impotence and insecurity, yet still have the allure of all out superheroes. LOVED IT.
Watchmen was a faithful adaptation, my only negative was the starting battle and new ending, but i seem to be alone in my view.
Watchmen while technically proficient, and sharing the same story as the books lacks the soul of said works. From Ozymendas' self satisfied smugness to Dr. Manhattans cool detachment we end with a work where throughout there is no sense of urgency rather a sense of boredom in this character driven story.
From the stark yellow opening to the multi-layered ending, “Watchmen” throws the superhero genre out a window. The audience is given a stark mirror contrast to our world and what it means to be a hero. When it is over, you’ll be left asking yourself – who was the real hero?
worth price of admission for credits alone, featuring history of minutemen to bob dylan's "times they are a-changing." movie really captured spirit of graphic novel, if not every detail. special effects were gorgeous. acting was powerful. music was inspired. think ozymandias was miscast, but otherwise actors WERE their characters. bravo!
The movie was just a lazy man's alternative to reading the graphic novel with some omissions and changes to have it make sense in a timely manner. I can’t tell what was worse: the acting or the music.
Great visual adaptation. I found it hard to detach myself from the comic. Opening credits was genius and set up the world. Subplots really suffered due to length. The ending was far superior than the comic ending. Solid casting of Rorschach, Night Owl and Comedian. Solid A rating.
EXCELLENT! (if you read the book)
The special effects, visuals & scenes are stunning. But as with most books turned into movies allot of things were left out, & I feel those who have not read the novel & see this movie just might feel lost & leave the theater not liking it at all.
The difference between Watchmen and its competition is the “bigger” feeling it exudes. Not due to money/FX, but because the main threat was very real. These heroes transcend through decades of history, all in a faux reality that walks a thin line between fantastic imagination and our worst fears.
Amazing movie. If you didn't read the novel, you'll be pretty lost.
The film translation of Watchmen echoes one of the central themes of the graphic novel: the heroes we worship are ultimately human. Watching the film, you quickly become aware that the director, Zack Snyder, is only human, and no adaption of this classic could be flawless.
I never read the Watchmen graphic novel so I had no preconceptions going in. That said, I REALLY enjoyed this movie. It's unfortunate that this movie will be remembered as a sadomasochistic movie that features a blue penis because it deserves recognition for it’s achievements as a fine cinematic piece. Kudos!
Watchmen in a few words:
Dark. Pain. Blood. Rinse-Wash-Repeat. Release.
Past. Present. Bastardized-timeline.
What-if’s. Could-be’s.
Power. Strength. Hatred. Sorrow. Hope.
Fear. Evil. Ignorance. Greed. Natural.
Black. Blue. Red. Yellow. Brown. Gray.
Hunger. Flesh. Desire. Hope. Torture.
Betrayal. Death. Despair.
Necessary. Future. Peace.
Secret. Snow. Release.
Its definitely not your typical Hollywood super hero flick. If you are expecting batman or x-men then you WILL be disappointed. Its not an action movie though the action sequences are very well done. Lots of dialogue and some deep philosophical questions and revelations about the depravities of human nature.
Hmmmmmm yellow
I thought the movie was both a faithful recreation of the book, and a unique and well-crafted original film. Zach Snyder and film’s cast and crew did a brilliant job of bringing Alan Moore’s complex characters to life.
I thought the movie was both a faithful recreation of the book, and a unique and well-crafted original film. Zach Snyder and film’s cast and crew did a brilliant job of bringing Alan Moore’s complex characters to life.
Watchmen is a pop-art masterpiece. Too dense for a single viewing, it functions as an antithesis to both The Dark Knight and X-Men as a post-modern deconstruction of modern comic book films, the cold war, the role of the outsider and the consequences of transcending the common limits of human potential.
Being a fan of the graphic novel, I was impressed with what I saw onscreen. For the most part the acting was good and the action intense. It is a beautiful looking movie. The ending, in my opinion, was an improvement on the novel. Even my wife enjoyed the movie.
Too many hardcore Watchmen graphic novel fans said that the movie adaptation was inadequate. Flawed. Missing some bits. But, in my experience, it’s gotten some of my friends very interested in the franchise; wanting to read the original source material. If it’s accomplished that, I call it a great success.
Remaining faithful to the source materials, Watchmen is a fantastic superhero tale reminding us of the fears we faced in a land of confusion and how heroes are no less flawed than the rest of humanity. Fluid, stunning and stylish are the words describing director Zack Snyders vision.
Comfortably faithful to the book, and interestingly new takes on the "birth" of 'only Rorschach' and the end of the world scenario. I really enjoyed this film and realized that this movie is NOT for everyone. Especially after taking friends who were disinterested in the marketing.
Fan of the comic, went to see the movie on opening day.
My opinion?
It tried too hard to please everybody.
It wasn't a bad movie by any means,
but the over the top action seemed out of place at times,
and the highly compressed story was missing needed explanation
A good movie based on a better comic.
Recommendable, for discovery of the original story.
Not for the squeamish, not for the literalists. Great for those who live on comics and movies. Great for those who want insatiable entertainment.
Great for those who don’t want to get it.
I enjoyed the movie very much. It was pretty faithful to the graphic novel. The choice of music was good but I didn't really understand the use of "all along the watchtower" towards the end; it felt really out of place to me.
The Watchmen movie gets so many things right that it's hard to find fault as a fan of the original novel. The subversive nature of Alan Moore's narrative comes through, and Zack Snyder manages to produce awesome cinematic imagery and some unforgettable scenes.
This movie was so good, it made me forget that other movies like Spiderman, and even my beloved upcoming X-Men Origins movie were at one time my favourites. This movie was entertainment at its absolute best, one of my new favourite movies. Ten out of Ten.
I loved the fact that it was so close to the graphic novel (although not exactly, but as close to). Amazing story! A comic book movie sticking close to the original but without ruining it by making it for a "younger audience".
See the Watchmen... but definitely after you read the graphic novel. There are a good amount of supporting details in the graphic novel that provide background and ambiance for the story that, when left out or abridged in a movie, might cause a viewer to unfairly judge it. The movie is well-made, but make sure you've got the source material down so you can enjoy it.
It was a faithful adaptation of the book, but it turns out the book doesn't make a great movie. The book is all about nuance: different sub plots all furthering the same ideas. The movie covers only the main plot, and even then is 3 hours long.
I'm a huge fan of the comics and I absolutely loved this movie. Dr. Manhattan's monologue on Mars was so well done, I loved it. The movie was visually stunning and although they changed a few things with the story, I think they made it work very well. Top notch.
I loved this movie. it is what an adult super hero movie should be, but not in the traditional spandex-style genre. It develops it's character's to the point they are believable, and you even associate with the stinking anti-hero Rorshach by the end. Amazing.
Rorschach's Journal: Hurm. Good movie. Fairly faithful to the graphic novel. Heroes too super. Are more human than superhero in the book. Ozymandias lacked depth, should have been more of a misguided genius than maniacal villian.
Saw the movie.
Didn't like it. Flashy visuals and mismatched soundtrack like nice dress draped over cold lifeless corpse. Good enough for the masses. Mindless herds of sheep slack-jawed at the sight of breasts and explosions. Not good enough for me.
Never good enough.
Over-hyped but visually stimulating Watchmen should only be seen in IMAX. While the story leaves something to be desired the visual effects, costumes and grandiose nature will give you something to keep watching...even as gratuitous sex and violence permeate the screen. A treat for the eyes, not mind.
It undeniably suffers from the transition from book to film with the dialogue and pacing, and the core of the film is unavoidably dated, but it's more than redeemed both by the performances and seeing the comic come to life.
Wow, one of the best looking 360 mods I have seen in awhile.
Watchmen is an epic thriller that is well worth your time and the price of admission.
competent but predicatbly over-done. too slick and self aware to be comparable to the comic, it still presented a more than enjoyable live action version of the story. i think that part of the irony of the characters and construction was lost in translation, but it could have been a lot worse.
Watchmen is a visually stunning, highly accurate treat for fans of the novel, but the length, pace, and dense symbolism may test the patience of a viewer seeking a simple action movie. For those looking for a tale of intrigue peppered with action, sexuality, and incredible visuals, see this film.
Sure they made some changes, but there was no reason for Alan Moore to get his wizard robes all in a bunch. More things were right than wrong, and it was enjoyable for people who loved the book as it was for people who have never read it.
While slow at times, the Watchmen was visually impressive and kept the spirit of the source material.
The movie was very enjoyable and while I would have liked the original ending to be intact I thought the new ending was very well done. The movie was also a lot of fun to watch and I believe it gets an eight out of ten.
Watchmen was both beautiful and horrible to experience. While grim and violent, it jumped right off the page, coming to life right before my eyes. No adaptation is perfect, but if it evokes the same feelings as the source material, then it does its job. This one does in spades.
Watchmen is a film appealing to a more mature audience than its predecessors. Snyder's creation is aesthetically magnificent and as true to the original story as one could expect from film adaptation. A dark, raw story where the hero you love can be more flawed than the scum they fight.
While Watchmen is not perfect as a movie, it captures the essence of the comic perfectly. People who have not read the graphic novel will not enjoy it as much, but seeing the pages come to life is amazing.
I loved the graphic novel and really enjoyed the movie. Seeing it at an IMAX didn't hurt. Look, I think there are sacrifices that have to be made when you are making a movie for a major studio. That said, very well done.
Watchmen is the most visually stunning films this year with a better then expected screenplay considering its Hollywood. The Console looks great with a real Watchmen aesthetic.
Great movie, you see too much of Manhattan's junk though... On an IMAX screen that gives a guy a little bit of P.E.
Watchmen is a movie that will be very polarizing to audiences: it's love it or hate it. It's not a movie that one can walk away from and not be affected, because it is such an overload-inducing film. A faithful adaptation, the few changes are for the film's benefit.
The Watchmen is a gritty movie with the dark unforgiving drama we've seen in the recent Batman movies.
Crime drama has been redefined with The Watchmen, where the "heros" have flaws and the criminals are the heros. Amazing from start to finish.
This movie is an icon to what everything should be. Let us be done with all the superficial things, because everything is much deeper than it appears. Compelling action sequences, dialogue that cannot be forgotten. Watchmen is simply a movie that cannot be passed up because of someone's mental inadequacy.
Exceptional visually, The Watchmen has stayed quite true to the novel. With endless, powerful lines ripped directly from the comic, the movie shares exceptionally close to its award winning predecessor. Perhaps a bit too in your face for the typical moviegoer, to the thoughtful(and geek), Watchmen is undoubtedly a winner.
I thought the story was good. The way Zack Snyder does fight sequences is awesome. It's going to be one of the few movies I watch more than once.
This movie is very likely one of the closest graphic novel adaptations ever. For the most part it stayed true to the source material, and it brought the book's characters to life. The main ideas of the plot remained true, and the resonance of the subject matter remains.
Visually, it was very impressive, but the burdens of slavishly going fram by fram shows itself in some of the lackluster direction.
Loved the movie it was a grand success !
A mainstream audience is hard to please, especially when trying to stay true to the source material.
The music? Great! but out of place sometimes.
Acting? The best performances pull the film up so high that it's hard for the weak links (Silk Spectre II) to bring it down.
Thought it was an excellent film. Rorschach was amazing. I originally was not happy with the alternate ending, but felt that it worked well for the movie. Adrian was by far the weakest link in it all.
As a non-reader, I found Watchmen to be an entertaining movie. However, it was too visual at times, with some scenes better left as suggestions. Nevertheless, a good and recommended movie.
The movie Watchmen is not the comic book Watchmen. It is its own experience, something special and unique. And I greatly enjoyed it. As good a movie as we could have hoped.
The Watchmen is a three-hour long adaptation of 12 graphic novels. The film's pacing and content are much the same. Some familiar content like storylines, dialogue, and favorite panels might be missing in the movie. However, the adaptation was pitch perfect for what was on screen.
As far as adaptations of graphic novels, the Watchmen movie is by far the best. It was exciting to be able to recognize exact frames from Alan Moore's work.
Watchmen is an incredibly vivid window into the key points of a tale wide in scope. At it’s worst, it feels like an impassioned love letter to a piece of iconic pop culture. At it’s best, it captures the intelligence and wonder I felt when I first read the original.
Dark and visceral.
This film embodies everything that makes up the darker side of superheroes in a tantalising feast for the senses. Staying (relatively) true to the graphic novel, the motion picture manages to create an equally iconic and timeless piece of story telling. Watchmen: go watch it!
This movie should be perfect for fans of the graphic novel; it is as if frames had been lifted from the pages and recreated in full motion. However, some sacrifices were lost in translation such as higher levels of violence as well as certain very important elements of the story.
Watchmen is a difficult film to watch. It is brutal and explicit. And yet, there is a quality that draws you into the lives of these damaged people. I recommend watching it and then reading the graphic novel to see the rest of the story behind the film.
If you're a fan of the comic, you may have to see it twice. The first time to weigh every scene against the frames from the graphic novel, and the second to actually watch Zack Snyder's brilliant work.
That said, your non-comic geek friends might walk out confused.
I didn't read the comics so I didn't have any complaints about the ending. Thought it was an interesting way to tell a story and pose the age old question; should the few die for the good of the many. Except in this case the few was a few million.
I personally enjoyed the movie having read the book now I see how some may not completely enjoy the movie. However most of the changes and cut outs from the book were small enough that most could just ignore them all together. all in all Watchmen was a great movie.
The movie overall was pretty good, however, it seemed a little choppy. I can only assume that it is because the director tried to stay as close to the book as possible. That said, if you could get past that, the movie was pretty entertaining. It was packed full of nonstop action mixed with hint of comedy and romance. I would say it is a must see.
What a great movie. Full of action, love, plot twists and fun. Without a doubt one of the best and most interesting movies in the entire line of overdone superhero movies.9 1/2 out of 10.
Watchmen is a cool movie that takes the paradigm of what a superhero is and twists it into another dimension.
While many fans of the original story will be disappointed by the film's condensing of stories, altering others & taking creative liberty with the conclusion, I still felt it was well done. A portrayal of a comic book world which is perfectly embodied by it's comic relief - The Comedian!
Watchmen was an enthralling experience with a surprise ending you will not forget. Having read the novel, I was surprised again seeing the new ending to the movie, which I appreciated. Zack did a fantastic job with this novel, and I applaud him for it.
Both the graphic novel and the film are two different experiences in themselves and while not completely identical, the combination of them both supplement each other very well. For what they had to condense to make a several hour film, they did a fantastic job.
If you enjoyed the graphic novel and are not a stickler for detail, then Watchmen is an enjoyable film experience. Those who are not familiar with the source material may not get it but it is an entertaining experience overall.
The Watchmen movie honors the most engaging features of the graphic novel, the characters. Flawed people dress up as heroes and find their greatest enemy is not some super villain, but humanity’s bloody nature. You’ll find the movie watchable, even if you’re a loyalist to the original comic version.
A worthy adaptation of the comic that unfortunately adds nothing to the work it was inspired from. Watchmen dazzles with super slo-mo and gorgeous set pieces, but ultimately the movie feels hollow, without soul. It joins other Alan Moore-inspired movies on the DVD shelf of disappointment.
Watchmen will be held to be The comic book movie that others will be based off of. An epic adaptation that rocked my socks off. Great movie, great story, awesome Rorschach.
Watchmen is a dark fairy tale of twisted heroics and ideals gone awry. The film is not as nuanced as the graphic novel, subtly changing some key relationships and character motivations. Still, Snyder's Watchmen is quite beautiful and enjoyable, particularly the second half, and the ending remains wonderfully subversive.
A polarizing experience, "Watchmen" the film is something you either love or hate, but no matter what it's something you're going to talk about and remember.
Watchmen in a few words:
Dark. Pain. Blood. Rinse-Wash-Repeat. Release.
Past. Present. Bastardized-timeline.
What-if’s. Could-be’s.
Power. Strength. Hatred. Sorrow. Hope.
Fear. Evil. Ignorance. Greed. Natural.
Black. Blue. Red. Yellow. Brown. Gray.
Hunger. Flesh. Desire. Hope. Torture.
Betrayal. Death. Despair.
Necessary. Future. Peace.
Secret. Snow. Release.
A fan of the novel, I thought the movie was merely okay. The director hit a lot of things right, capturing the tension of the novel during flash backs, and his choice of songs in the sound track were amazing. Deviations from the novel however, gutted all the subtext.
Watchmen has a combination of: porn (sex), graphic scenes which includes gore, murder, hate, and strong language. I would not recommend it to teenagers. It doesn't make any sense at all. I did not like the movie at all. I gave it a grade of "F."
Zack Snyder's adaption of Alan Moore and Dave
Gibbons's "unfilmable" graphic novel "Watchmen" battles between slavish adherance to the source material and brazen spectacle you'd expect from action movies these days. The sex and violence is filmed in fetish level detail robbing it of much needed gravity. Still good though.
Watchmen is a must see film for the comic fans and action movie fanatics alike. It stays as close as possible to the source story and is an unmissable experience.
I loved Watchmen the movie. I believe it was the closest representation possible from book to screen. I also LONG to wath it with a pair of myvu glasses. These are the holy grail for me and I believe I can answer the questio: Who watches the Watchmen?... hopefully me with my new myvu's.
I thought it was epic. Watching it on an IMAX screen gave the excellent cinematography justice, and Zach Snyder did an excellent job staying true to the original.
I liked Watchmen, but I thought it could have used more blue penis. And sex scenes set to awkwardly chosen music. And hell, more awkwardly chosen music in general.
This movie was fantastic. I loved all of the characters and thought that the story stayed faithful to the comics. One of my new favorite movies. Certainly one of the best of the year.
Probably one of the most faithful comic book to big screen adaptions, even with the squid-less ending. I felt the new ending was a bit more palatable for general audiences. I went in with a group of my friends and knew who would love it and who would hate it. I don't think seeing it in IMAX is a requirements. They only big visual scenes are in the last 20 mins. I thought it was a great flix and can't wait to see the Director's cut.
thanks!

The Watchmen movie is a true adaption of the graphic novel, replete with its own nuances. The acting is superb; each character breathes a fully-formed hero's life, driven towards a precarious future by their troubled past. See it once, and you'll be stuck inside with Rorschach.
I thought the movie was fantastic for someone who read the graphic novel. I can see why people who hadn't read it would be confused, but the same could be said about someone trying to catch everything in the graphic novel the first time.
Overall, I liked the movie, although it relied too much on being familiar with the source material. I think that the main problem with the movie is that it tried to stay too faithful to the comic. Too much was crammed into the movie not giving enough time on any particular moment, and too much was left out leading to confusion to some viewers. I also appreciated the change to the ending, although the comic was more powerful because you actually got to see the result, instead of just an empty space. In the end, the movie expectations were too high. It was never going to succeed on that level, but what was accomplished was great.
It's different to the graphic novel but it's still entertaining. If you haven't seen it, I think it's worth a watch.
Watchmen is a dark, intricate movie with based on a classic comic. To say that it faced obstacles is an understatement. No one thought it could succeed as a movie. But it did, it surpassed all our expectations and is the perfect example of a comic adaptation.

Freaking awesome, I love the look of that machine.
Retained the visual expression of the comic perfectly, but left a great deal of the intellectual content neutered. In a word, it hollywoodized something that, after viewing, proved its resistance to translation. Small issues aside, it was probably as good as possible, though I far prefer the original graphic novel.
I really enjoyed the film adaptation of Watchmen, I was a little worried after reading negative reviews. However the film proved to be roughly everything I could have hoped for considering the source material. Now I can’t wait for the DVD including the little extras cut for film length.
Zack Snyder as been up to the challenge. Everything that was cut from the original graphic novel or adapted is fully understandable. (You can't put much more than this in a 3 hour movie.) The grim 'blasé'' feeling of Watchmen has been respected and the soundtrack really get us into the 80's mood. Kudos to the opening, which manage to incorporate a lot of small details from the graphic novel.
Snyder made a great use of cinematic process. The scene in the bathroom is a real joy to watch. We recognize the director of '300'' in this.
The characters have been wonderfully played and still have that deep and interesting psyche.
My only objection is about those ''flashy'' fights. The fights in the movie seemed a little bit too spectacular to me. Watchmen is supposed to be about humans with limitation trying to be heroes. Not about superhumans.
The Watchmen movie/comic are an experience unto themselves, unlike any other. Do yourself a favor, read the novel and enjoy the movie on IMAX. You'll be better for it.
Watchmen: a movie made from a graphic novel. The graphic novel was deep and philisophical, the movie was midrange and action-filled. Which is better? Depends on your hobbies.
The Watchmen is an instant movie classis. It's a reviewing of history with superheros. But unlike the paragons you are used to seeing as superheros, each character is very much human. All are vulnerable to emotions, has flaws, and are very much mortal( with one exception). I highly recomend to any older fan of comics.( not a kids movie)
Having only read a small portion of the graphic novel, the movie was well adapted for the non-hardcore fans. The excellent backstory development showed me why I should care about the characters. The cinematic visuals give real depth to a superbly told story. Overall, I give it a must see!
Rorschach's journal: March 6th, 2009. Watchmen has been released to the unwashed masses. Huddled in the theater, I notice the prominence of "little Manhattan," a distracting blight on the movie-going experience. The soundtrack is poorly-planned, there is no squid in this film. The unworthy masses seem entertained, I leave unsatisfied.
This movie demonstrates that a good story is a good story no matter what medium it is told in. For my two cents, the comic is far superior to the movie and would be, I assume, were it put into a written-word novel. Nevertheless, I found the movie highly entertaining, albeit somewhat disturbing when Doc Manhattan's ample fluorescent presence graced the screen.
I read the book before I saw the movie. I think they changed the details of the ending to make it much less idiotic than the book. Most of the characters came off really well. Ozymandius -to scrawny, but effeminate enough. Silk Spectre II -gorgeous, but not the best actress.
Perfect actors for perfectly flawed characters try to understand each other, yet they fail to our delight.
All heroes are not created equal. Some see black, some see white, the dangerous ones live in the grey area in between.
Nothing drives a story like violence, sex, and intrigue. The only thing you won't find in this film, or in the graphic novel it's based upon is this: a normal person.
Wow a great Xbox to match a great movie. I hope I win!
If you love the graphic novel, go see Watchmen. If you love a new take on the superhero movie genre, go see watchmen. If you love blue penis, go see Watchmen. Superman, Spiderman, and even Batman must've taken a few steps back when they first saw this movie. Dark, disturbing, and groundbreaking, "Watchmen" is like nothing you've ever seen before.
The Watchmen movie show's that Hollywood CAN recreate the surroundings of Watchmen but that really is only a covering. I loved Jackie Earle Haley's acting as rorschach and i loved Billy Crudup's acting as doctor Manhattan. Other than that it was a shallow movie really, drug on too long and the story wasn't really reached in the way it should have been
I thought the movie was very good. An excellent story. Would see it again if theater tickets didn't cost as much as a down payment on a house.
Watchmen Review: This movie was critical for comic fans everywhere. It delivered style, expansion, and a feeling of closure to the expectations of the story being brought to film. The movie felt like moving story boards and really gave off the feeling of seeing ink come alive.
Great movie, and I would highly recommend it. The plot of very different compared to other super hero movies I watched.
The Watchmen film is not your typical action/comic entertainment film but rather one that challenges you to think deeply about its themes and implications even after the viewing. I knew little of the comic prior but still was entertained by its storylines and characters. If one goes into the film thinking its a popcorn flick then he/she will not be a satisfied customer. But if you go into it with an open mind and some patience, it can lead you to a place where you want to discuss it long after the hype is over. And ultimately to go back to the source material and dive further into the Watchmen lore. 3.5 out of 5 stars for me.
The movie was good. I enjoyed the action and flashback sequences a lot. However I felt that half of the actors needed a couple more takes to deliver their lines just right, things just seemed a little off. Some of the music seemed out of place as well.
Watchmen grabs its audience by the seat of their pants, throws them against the nearest wall, beats them against the screen, scrapes their faces on the soda coated floor and once they finish spitting out teeth and wiping away tears, leaves them begging for more.
Despite the plot changes, hews too close to the source material to remain interesting for fans. Movies should exist as movies, not as a moving version of other media.
This movie is one of a kind I thought the Dark Knight was the spectacle of the superhero movie, I was wrong and im glad for that. Made me a biggggerrrr fan than I already was.
"The Watchmen" was more or less true to the graphic novel, the exceptions being a few plotlines that fell by the wayside. However, given that the movie was already a healthy three hours long, this was fully understandable. The soundtrack, the pop culture references, and the actors were fantastic.
I feel that the story and genius of this film wont be fully realized or felt for years to come. I loved the source material and the movie left me with that feeling of uneasiness and wonder which is what art, at times.. should do.
This is a film that will stand the test of time. I've seen it twice now and will buy the Blu-ray to watch again and again. Much more enjoyable the second time! The movie poses lots of questions to consider and has fascinating details from the comic.
Zak Snyder’s film adaptation of “Watchmen”, the classic comic series by Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons, encapsulates many of the best aspects of the original work. The translation from comic to film is not always successful, at times clumsy and clunky. But where it does succeed it astonishes and inspires.
A movie that is almost a faithful adaptation of its source graphic novel, Watchmen provides a tremendous amount of enjoyable visual splendor. The 'punch' from the comic may be somewhat missing in the movie, however, taken on its own merits, the movie is a worthwhile contender in the superhero genre.
The Watchmen movie was a good movie, although not great. It is a fine adaptation of the graphic novel... but the graphic novel is superior in almost every way. Obviously, the visuals of the movie can convey things the printed pages never could.
Those who expect a traditional tale of superheroes and villains will be greatly disappointed. But those who come with open minds will see the demons that plague even the "super" among us. They will be witness to a journey over twenty years in the making. It was worth the wait.
I thought this movie was incredible. I read the comic after i watched the movie, and I must say, kudos to the director for his role in making such a great movie.
I loved the book and the movie did not disappoint me. It's not an easy movie to watch and it's not for everybody, but director Zack Snyder succeeded in making a great film from a book that was considered unfilmable.
Once again Snyder proves himself a director of VFX and computer-assisted cameras over actors, making him heir apparent to George Lucas and other like-minded box office kings. While the movie has moments of brilliance - Jackie Haley and the opening credits stand out - I found it an ultimately unsatisfying adaptation.
I read the graphic novel after seeing the movie, because I am only 21 and reading is stupid! But needless to say I was a very big fan of the movie, have seen it 3 times and would recommend seeing it to anybody who has 2 1/2 hours to kill and loves seeing the darker side of heroes. p.s. After seeing about 15 Mormons walk out of the theatre(I live in Idaho) at the scene where nite owl and silk spectre get it on with the song Hallelujah playing in the background! I almost died laughing, after seeing that I was sold had to read the book, and the movie is so spot on to the book, which is rare in many book to movie movies. Great movie, go see it.
Watchmen is a film that remains very loyal to its source, and captures the tone and feel very well. It's presented at a steady pace that keeps you interested and in the present while waiting for the next big scene. I recommend it to all fans of the comic and fans of science fiction.
I loved the movie. It brought to life wonderfully all the characters and detailed story from the graphic novel by using great camera work, explosive special effects, and convincing acting. The only flaw was that it ended!!!
i believe david hayter did a good job with the screenplay! great movie, hope he get mgs too ^.^
If you like Blue Dong. This movie is for you. Dat ass...
Great films are composed of great characters, which unfortunately Watchmen lacks, instead favoring to provide truncated character backgrounds so that it can hit on the major beats of the book. This makes for a beautiful, entertaining film, but the journey rings hollow due to the sardine repacking of the novel.
Movie worth watching. Enjoyed severely, felt good connection to original work. Disagreed with use of sex and violence to push films for degenerates. The accumulated filth and waste of Snyder's vision will crowd up and obscure the brilliance of the film until it passes into nothing. It will look up and shout "Save me" and I will look down and whisper, "No."
While riling up die-hard fans of the comic, the movie kept the general public interested and should bring more awareness to the original work. Good enough for me.
The film version of “Watchmen” is to the graphic novel it’s adapted from what “Illustrated Classics” are to the works of literature they adapt. It takes less effort to experience but is also way less rewarding. Buy into the hype, but read the book instead.
An excellent movie that had the seemingly impossible task of following up a great comic. Well done to all involved.
The movie captured Dr. Manhattan really well. Zack Snyder really did a really good job.
I loved this movie! It was awesome!
Having watched the movie I have to say it was pretty enjoyable. It focused on Visuals and over-the-top action sequences. The character development took a while to catch up to the action, but THE WATCHMEN it didn't disappoint.
A great film with many complex layers. So much more is revealed in a second viewing of Watchmen. As a fan of Zack Snyder's I was happy to see him get a shot at Directing this epic and he knocked it out of the park.
Watchmen played on the big screen like a vivid dream would play through ones mind. The introduction portrayed an altered reality, where history eerily reflected events that have taken place in recent past. It left me with an odd taste in my mouth, and an unsettled feeling in my stomach. Leaving the theater, I realized that this was exactly what Watchmen set out to do. And it did so very well.
It was a pretty awesome movie, and the 360 is very nice to boot.
The Watchmen isn't your ordinary movie.
With all the ideas the writer intells, and how it is actually incorporated into the movie; this is what will make this movie stand out. The idea and stort line is what makes this movie so unquie, as well as how well it is illustrated.
The storyline was different and good. I wish the action and graphic was the same.
Still waiting to see it!
I really enjoyed the film. I thought the music was incredible, and the visual style was spectacular. I felt like the flashbacks dragged, but once we got to the present, things hummed along quite well, and I appreciated the ending, even though it deviated from the book.
I thought that is was a well don adaptation that really resonated with me in keeping the tone of the novel. For those who hadn't read it, people seemed hit and miss. Love it or not, but I think it was a wonderfully done movie.
Brilliant adaptation to the best graphic novel of all time. Exploring the psychological aspect of crime-fighting Watchmen masterfully portrays the humanity behind the masks. Deserving of every accolade it receives, Watchmen is an instant cult classic!
I read the original issues back in the 90's, well before the comic shops went down-hill, and I have to say that I was amazed at how accurate the director was at sticking to the story, panel for panel.
You can't say that for alot movies out there that are based on comics, books or video games.
'WATCHMEN' is how you do a movie. My only gripe is did they really have to continuously show Dr. Manhattan's crotch?
As a big fan of the comic, I absolutely loved the movie. I felt that it was amazingly well done and adapted from comic to movie. The special effects were amazing and the acting was spot on. One that I disliked about the movie though was that it had too much music playing in scenes where it really didn't need any.
This has to be the truest adaption of a graphic novel I have ever seen. I loved that it was almost line for line of the book. The music was also great. Saw it twice already.
Watching the Watchmen is like finally being able to drink a glass of water after crossing the desert for several years. You're ecstatic to feel the water in your mouth, but then you realize that because that glass was half empty it only leaves longing for more.
Watchmen is the new yardstick by which all comic-based movies are measured. A love triangle for the wife (among other blue things), and a mass-murdering hero against a heroic mass-murderer. Spider-man is in the corner pissing his webs in fear. Actually BETTER the comics... amazing.
This movie may not satisfy all the fanboys, but it's more than enough for all newcomers. You must be open to a movie that should be over 10 hours long but clocks in at a condensed 2 hours and 45 minutes instead. Finally, a superhero movie with a R rating.
“The Watchmen” is a truly inspired film, and I think a lot of it’s lukewarm reception is due to the unfamiliar facet it presents of it’s super hero characters. I believe their defectively flawed qualities are disconcerting to many viewers, but that’s precisely what makes the story so brilliant.
i think this movie was expected to be awful from all angles on account of how beloved the source material is and the hype of Zach Snyder. An impossible story to convey in 3 hours but Snyder did the best job anyone could and i loved it.
IT'S NOT A TYPICAL SUPERHERO MOVIE LIKE SPIDERMAN AND SUPERMAN BECAUSE IT IS VIOLENT AND THERE IS A SEX SCENE. ALSO, IT'S NOT A TYPICAL KID MOVIE. IT'S NOT COOKIE CUTTER BECAUSE EACH SUPER HERO HAS THEIR OWN STORYLINE.
ITS A VERY GOOD ADAPTATION FROM SCRIPT TO FILM BECAUSE IT WAS THE SAME EXCEPT THE ENDING WAS DIFFERENT. THE QUALITY OF THE MOVIE ITSELF WAS WORTH THE $10 AT THE THEATERS.
THE DIRECTOR ZACK SNYDER AND WARNER BROTHERS DID WAS SUPERB IN DIRECTING AND PRODUCING THE MOVIE.
The movie took a unique obersevation into each of the Watchmen's personal memories of the life of the Comedian. But I could not for the life of me understand why towards the end of the movie Dr. Manhattan's penis was exposed. It wasn't early on in the movie. For the next few nights after watching the film everynight I closed my eyes all I saw was his blue wang.
I've never read the comics, so I was like WTF. However, it was a good flick. Great graphics:-)
Watchmen is now one of the top comic movies ever made. Just seeing it once does not allow for a good understanding of the multi-layered messages and attention to detail. One of the most under-appreciated movies released in a long time.
This movie was truly made for the fans. The graphic novel comes to life in this fun yet very literal adaptation full of little tidbits and details for the fans to find. Everything in each frame pays homage to Moore's masterpiece.
First of all, this movie is not recommended for children under 17 unless of course there is parental/guardian supervision.
Other than that, this was a marvelous movie from head to toe. The casting was amazing and fitted each character perfectly. Absolutely loved this movie and can't wait to see it at the IMAX to get the perfect quality that the film offers.
Hope everyone else will enjoy this movie as much as I did.
This was an absolutely fantastic movie in it's entirety. It provides everything you need in a film from action, drama, romance, comedy, etc. I was absolutely blown away from the visual affects and story plot because I have not read the comics.
Precautionary warnings, this film is not for children under 17.
Decent, but mis-cast in many places, badly directed in others, and poorly scored all over. Veidt, Silk Spectres, and Manhattan (voice didn’t work) all could have used different actors. Snyder’s directing is awful for movies where action scenes shouldn’t be the focus, and set with horribly inappropriate music cues.
Amazing writing, great acting, engaging plot, strange but fitting soundtrack, and phenomenal visuals. Cut back a little on the gratuitous penis shots and you're golden!
Ultimately the movie is a beautiful failure; it looks fantastic, but completely fails to capture the depth of the comic, which was an incredible study of human archetypes through the lens of super heroes. I applaud it for it's ambition, but can't really recommend it because it fails to achieve it's lofty goals. Individual scenes are sometimes awe inspiring, but the film as a whole falls quite short of the sum of it's parts.
I loved the movie, my only complaint was it wasn't longer. Can't wait for a directors cut of it.
Movie was a skilled, visually immersive, and fan-focused cult classic. My friends were bored, but liked Dr. Manhattan, if you know what I mean.
The film itself is good read the graphic novel prior. If not then you will find it hard to follow the story. The visuals are fantastic, and definitely gets an A+ in my book. However I think the movie is too cram packed with information that it'll leave your brain fried. In a nutshell; if your a fan of the graphic novel the movie will be great. If not, then expect to be average.
A grim and unconventional superhero movie peppered with spectacular, confronting violence. It had some really nice plot twists, but I confess that I didn't understand 100% of the plot. Still, I really liked it, and might even go watch it a second time. Or maybe read the graphic novel.
This was a great movie and a faithful adaptation, i really like the comedian that was just right and not too over the top. The story held together well also, but the villian could have been better disguised...
Two hours and forty-five minutes of Dr. Manhattan's massive, glowing, blue penis.
Zack Snyder knows how to make movies look good. Watchmen delivers awesome eye and ear candy but it lacks on the story side. But I have to admit that it's nearly impossible to adapt everything from the book to a movie. I'll give it one thumb up of two thumbs.
Given the complexity of the source material, this movie was as good as it possibly could have been. Perfectly cast and executed as it was though, at two and a half hours it was impossibly condensed and only a fan of the graphic novel will be able to appreciate it.
Super Heroes are the stuff of which dreams are made. Great when movies follow books. BUT. Same problem with Dark Knight. End = Super Hero(s) being the bad dude. Sociologically, this is a slippery slope. Happening not just in movies but throughout cultures. Changing society's moral compass. Who to trust?
this movie was like the best movie i have ever seen ant to tell you the truth the story line both the comic book and the movie were very simalar and both the movie and the grafic novel i would reccomend to anyone with an interest in comic books
Watchmen was probably the best DC superhero movie i have ever seen!
It had a lot of unexpected parts and i loved it!
It is definitely a movie u could go see again and again. All the characters were great! The acting was good the story and plot were excellent!
Shot by shot, the film is as accurate a portrayal of a graphic novel on screen as one could hope for. This works to the film’s detriment, as each slowly panning recreation, panel by panel, is painful to watch for the casual moviegoer. Films should indulge the viewer with movement.
You won't leave it wanting to become Dr. Manhattan but it will change your view on Superhero movies. The story is deep, action is clear and no scene wasted. The blue penis is over-exaggerated but the sex scenes are not. You may not want to bring children to this movie.
I thought it was spot on to the comic. It capured the look and feel of the movie and even fixed the ending. All in all a good time.
The Watchmen movie lived up to my expectations. I read some background on the characters to get ready for the movie. Not once was I lost or confused. The movie held my attention for the entire running time and now I want to read the graphic novel.
Great Movie, Better Graphic Novel.
The movie was a little too long, and they say the dvd will be alot longer. I looking forward to purchasing that. I enjoyed it but I wouldn't say its my favorite comic movie. Not even in my top 5.
Watchmen is mind-blowing to say that least. As anyone would be, I was wary about the book-to-movie jump but after seeing it, I can sleep easy. The best comic-to-film translation I’ve seen (with only minor (yet necessary) liberties taken); A thrilling and exciting shot-for-shot recreation!
I thought it was phenomenal. My fanboy side noticed every omission and change from the source material, but the moviegoer in me was absolutely enthralled.
Well-choreographed fight scenes and somewhat unnecessary nudity make Watchmen earn its 'R' rating. Fans of the Matrix (and other fight-intensive movies) as well as porn and anything with deep messages will enjoy this movie, even if it isn't a perfect replica of the comics.
Watchmen was probably one of the coolest hero movies I've ever seen. The characters are so gritty and real, they have genuine issues and conflicts. The plot was awesome, and even though they strayed from the graphic novel, the ending was very cool.
I the movie very epic. I hope to see it again in theaters.
I read the comic and I think the director did a fantastic job of trying to stay close to the source material and still make it marketable for a mass audience. Pacing was very strong a bit long in some spots and even my wife who does not like comics thought it was good. Go see it on the big screen.
Of course it is not going to be your X-Men movie. In film it sought to transcent from this genre and creat one of its own with dept in characters, yet sufficiently aside from the original to keep all of us interested.
Watchmen is everything you could want in a graphic novel to movie adaptation. I find myself struggling to find something I didn't love about the movie. I also believe if you loved the graphic novel it should be impossible to hate the movie.
Followed the Novel very well. Some will say too well, I think this is one of the best movies I will see for a long time. Silk Spectre's "scenes" could have been shorter. For the most part it was extremely well casted. Nite owl II was perfect as for Rorschach.
The Movie was overall very well put together, they removed only what was not important to the story. My only gripe with the movie is the soundtrack, i was not the biggest fan of all along the watchtower and hallelujah.
Good movie. I enjoyed the adaptation, and actually loved the soundtrack. I understand the need to update the ending for the film medium, although I don't necessarily agree with the reassignment of some of the characters lines. I would recommend Watchmen to most audiences.
Going in without any previous Watchmen experience, I wasn’t sure watch to expect other than another superhero movie. After watching, I believe it surpassed my expectations and was a very solid movie until the end. Final thoughts: too much blue below the waistline, while not enough Spectre above the waistline.
Watchmen wasn't the perfect adaptation, but it was pretty darn close and, for my money, as faithful as it was entertaining. Snyder knowingly took on an impossible task and managed to make it not suck big blue dong, and for that I have a lot of respect for the guy.
AH! I loved the movie and the comic, out of all the 360's out there this is the one to get. I love the Watchmen theme.
It was a great movie.
As someone who hadn't read the book I thought it was a very good movie with a compelling story. After finishing the book I even thought that the movie made more sense. Watchmen is a damn fine example of how movie adaptations should be.
After seeing these prodigious characters immobilized in the pages of the graphic novel, it was incredible to watch their expressions shifting through emotions, to see them move and breathe. The actors did them justice, particularly the depictions of Rorschach and the Comedian (Haley and Morgan respectively).
The movie is great.
Although I haven't gotten the chance to read up the comic before watching the movie, I still enjoyed it (not to mention this is my very first IMAX movie, and man, do those visuals look amazing on the biggER IMAX screen). I really love how this movie didn't just revolve around just the Watchmen, but the indivudual character's backstories as well, and Rorchach's is, in my opinion, the most intriguing from the rest of the Watchmen, and I feel more of a connection to him than the other characters (as somewho who lives in a low-income neighborhood, filled with idiotic gangbangers, whores, druggies, etc.).
That's all I to say about the movie, I gotta get back to work.
Watchmen truly demonstrates how a movie can be a piece of art. The full 150 minutes are pure eye-candy while your ears are simultaneously treated to a symphony like no other and the story is enough to take the breath away from Rorschach himself. Utter brilliance!
This is a fantastic rendition of the animated graphic series and I am pleased to say that this movie did not let me down in any area. This is a truly amazing film.
The Watchmen does something few comic movies do - follow the script very closely. While delivering nearly scene by scene, the movie isn't for everyone. Kids & those unfamiliar with the graphic novel may want to stay away. Great movie – the actors made tough material come alive.
As someone who has read the book more than a few times, I say that it was a pretty good adaptation. I think the squid ending could have worked despite what others think but I enjoyed the ending that was chosen for the film just the same. If I had to change one thing about the film though I would remove that song from the Nite Owl II/Silk Spectre II sex scene. Didn't fit whatsoever! It's the only time I've ever cringed watching a sex scene in a movie! My wife really liked the film and she's never read it. I just hope others who are new to Watchmen enjoy it the same. I can't wait for an extended cut DVD.
It has an excellent storyline and topped by excellent performances. I really enjoyed the experience and the fantastic special effects!
It has an excellent storyline and topped by excellent performances. I really enjoyed the experience and the fantastic special effects!
I thought the movie was amazing. The action sequences were all very well done, and the story was spectacular. I recommend this movie to all comic book fans as well as action fans.
The unbelievable opening credits set the stage for an amazing superhero movie that was an excellent adaptation of the graphic novel. The story was paced very well and the actors did a fantastic job. The ending, while not true to the source material, made perfect sense for the big screen.
The movie was way better than I had hoped it would be.
Spectacular movie. I read the graphic novel before watching the movie and I was amazed at how well the film remained true to the source material.
A visually stunning film that falls along the love/hate border; fans of the novel are obligated to see it, if only to discuss it. The film, like the novel, is about taking the good with the bad, in that some scenes are amazing while others fall flat.
Well well well... I haven’t watched the watchmen yet (I am in India and waiting for the release) but reading all about it and watching the trailers I am pretty blown away. I am new fan in the making for Watchmen :)
Watchmen was unsettling during it's first spin. Therefore, I'd definately recommend giving it a good once over before deciding its comicdom blasphemy. That being said, once you get over the manner in which there are differences between the two mediums, film, and novel. It's quite a visual and emotional story.
Watchmen does not disappoint fans of the book with its undeniably fetishistic presentation and a sheen of violent camp. Three viewing in the theater so far.
Watchmen is one of those films that I immediately wanted to see again as soon as I left the theatre. An exciting story that is beautiful to watch, I thought it stood up well as the film version of such a detailed and complicated graphic novel. Although I was sad to see some story-lines go, I hope it ultimately encourages people to read the book and get the full experience.
It has it's good bits and it's bad bits, but there the rest is a stroke of genius. 4.5 out of 5
An amazing film and an excellent adaptation of the book. I especially liked the way The Comedian was portrayed - a masterpiece of interpretation!
I have never won anything in my life so this would be great prize. Thanks for this chance to win.
As a person who has never read the graphic novel, I have to say the movie was pretty good. Even thought it was long, it didn't drag on like some movies can, nor did I want it to be over. Thumbs up!
The Watchmen is a shotgun blast of folklore, images, music, violence and alternate history of comic book characters. They are not your fathers' heroes. The acting is subpar at best, what saves the movie, is the relentless barrage of contextaul images of the coming of age of world without superheroes.
Dark is the night, dark is the city. Old protectors are gone, mask is such a heavy weight to carry. Nevertheless, War is coming, West and East have both a finger on a trigger. They need a common target ; Evil is going to give them apocalypse as a new hope.
The movie was not the book - that's okay. Both are gorgeous, but need to be enjoyed on their own terms. Those who nit-pick the movie apart because it takes a few liberties are going to be disappointed, but if you take it for what it is you’ll love it.
Watch Watchmen. I did.
Great movie, not as good as the maxi-comic series.
I am a comic book reader Who likes movies that stay true to the comic and Watchmen was pretty much close to the graphic novel.I thought that they portrayed Roch. pretty go including his childhood. To me this is the first movie DC put out that was pretty acuarate to the comic book.Except not having the giant squid. But I would say it is my Number 2 comic book movie behind the second X-Men.
Watchmen sucked! two 1/2 HOURS OF A BLUE NAKED !!! No seriously the movie drag and lack any time of story line and the ending was so anti climatic! The best part of the movie:the credits.
From a book exploring Earth’s unlikeliest of heroes, Watchmen transforms into an overwhelming barrage of images and music and an underwhelming overall experience. Strengths are shown in effects, historical contextualization and music. Character development, acting and the absence of the giant squid left this reviewer wanting to revisit the book.
Watchmen takes as much as it can from the Graphic Novel of the same name onto the big screen. Some elements get unfortunately lost in the translation, which makes this a film more for fans than new comers to fully understand and enjoy.
Movie was good and changes to source material made sense. IMAX not worth it though, just made everything really really loud :(.
Watchmen is one of the few comic to movie adaptations that should be truly appreciated. From the fight scene between the Comedian and the intruder to the final showdown, this movie will remain in the hearts of Watchmen fans everywhere.
you may want to pick up the graphic novel before watching the watchmen. you will have a better time. oh, and leave the kiddies at home, unless you want to explain the blue-birds and the bees to them.
“Watchmen” delivers everything from love-hate to mutilation-compassion. Makes you think ‘would I do that?’ The plot questions the state of society with heroes who are greatly affected by the crimes committed. The lack of a punch out ending just adds to the uniqueness of the film. Suggest viewing!
As someone who hadn't read the comic before going to see the movie, I enjoyed Watchmen (visuals, writing, editing, acting, action, etc) but I figured out who the villain was halfway through the movie so I wasn't floored by the ending. Maybe the need to condense so much into a reasonable length movie lead to too much exposition that eliminated the element of surprise for me but who knows. Nevertheless, this was a far superior directing job for Snyder than his 300 movie. I'm looking forward to the blu-ray release of Watchmen with all of the extras.
A fairly good cinematic representation of the graphic novel. Zack Snyder took some stylistic freedoms but he used them in context to the situation, afterall its still a superhero movie. Walter Kovacs was phenomenal as Rorschach and the cast in general had good chemistry. Overall *** out of ****.
Finally… a true deconstruction of the superhero genre! The explicit humanity of the vigilantes, juxtaposed against a world in fear. Credit to Snyder for staying true to the novel, with the entire cast putting up stellar performances portraying the ‘Watchmen’. It‘s truly not a movie for the faint of heart.
This might be a bit late, but cant hurt I guess.
Great movie. I definitely noticed a different feel from the books, but I think most will enjoy it if they take each interpretation on its own. Long, but what would you expect? A++
I thought it was very similar to the comics. I liked the action; the dark cover, etc.
Heard it was pretty good going tonight!!
i have to go watch it.
Loved the movie, saw it twice and it was better the first time. I'm just afraid that it wasn't what people expected it to be (i.e. a comic book movie like Spiderman) and that's why it's crap like Race to Witch Mountain was able to be it.
finally got around to seeing the movie; it was nice. put it this way; society will be talking about the graphic novel long after the film
A great adaptation does not make a great movie.
The movie was *good*. Not as good as the books, but good.
The comic book was a complete masterpiece, the movie just as convincing... I feel that the effects, the characters, and the overall feel and message were pegged perfectly- my dislike of certain characters aside, Rorschach & Dr. Manhattan, even the Nite Owl, were all fantastic.
I don't see anywhere to buy this xbox360 console, so I'm going to be pathetically hopeful that the odds of me "winning" one here are far more than what they are. Woo for high hopes.
The Watchmen movie was a great adaptation of the graphic novel by Alan Moore despite Zack Snyder's "creative alterations". There are some graphic novel moments I missed seeing in the movie version, but they were only minor details (ex. Dr. Manhattan's flashbacks on Mars WHILE the photograph he dropped was floating to the ground). Anywho, I think that the movie was great and wish it had earned more money at the box office.
THAT XBOX IS SO SICK! pick me! I love Watchmen!
Watchmen is not only the most stunning graphic novel of all time, it's also my favorite book period. The movie is its visual match, and for that it is my admiration.
I could say so many different things about this movie even plagiarize the whole Graphic Novel to you but that would be cheating. So I will say this, the movie deserves a 10, First: for following the Novel pretty accurately and Second: for making a cult underground superhero Novel into an instant Classic.
I thought it was great how they stuck pretty closely to the comic, AND how they changed the ending to make it a bit less...out there. Jackie Earle Haley was phenomenal as Rorschach, and I can't *wait* for the DVD with extra scenes.
haven't seen the movie yet, but awesome contest!
this is a masterpiece. finally dc has made a better movie than marvel. i have also played the xbox 360 arcade game which is awsome. this a sleeper of a movie and gaming adventure which i love and told every one i know on xbox about. i would be proud to own this very fine xbox exclusive and show it off proudly. thanks for this opitunity.
Have winners been announced or contacted via email yet? I was wondering what the email would show up as such as email addy and subject line. If I win I just don't want to miss it in my inbox.
Great adaptation of the comic to the big screen.
Watchmen was one of the best comic book movies, up there with The Dark Knight, and that 360 looks SICK!
A multi-layered mystery adventure!!!!!!! it was spactaculer!!!! Best movie I ever have seen. Not everyone liked Nite Owl but from seeing the movie he is one of my favorite characters!!!! And Rorschach was awsome. The jail scene was awsome. BUT WHO WATCHES THE WATCHMEN?
300 was the best of 2007,
here is Watchmen: 2009 has already its winner
period
thank you Watchmen
I expected that movie to be a lot better. I want my theatre fare back. I wonder what the controller for that Watchmen 360 looks like (like i'll ever even get to see/use it anyway).
Is the contest over? Even if it is I just want to say that I really enjoyed this movie, the effects were great! The title might sound like something the little ones want to see but it's more of an adult movie.
