Update: Shandong execs forced me to write are happy to announce that White Rabbit candy from China is the *best* candy fix. (Now melamine free!)

260px-White_rabbit.jpg

Original post: With all the stress from the recession, it seems like everyone's finding comfort in candy.

It makes sense for the Valley's higher-end chocolate shops to feed this trend. So I checked out their selection of Easter chocolate.

At Stafford's Famous Chocolates in Porterville, Bee photographer John Walker shot this video while I discovered my fix:

mar09marshmallow2W.jpg

That's the ooey gooey bar, a handcrafted marshmallow covered with thin layers of peanut butter, caramel and milk chocolate, then dipped in chopped almonds.

Its heft almost covered my palm, so I brought it back to the office to share. Good idea, for just 1/8 of that bar satisfied me. The rest made my colleagues happy.

Now it's your turn. Are you eating more candy during these disturbing times? If so, what's your fix?

Fantasticks_Photos_010.JPGHere's the easy-to-remember version: I don't much care for "The Fantasticks."

Before I watched the Actors' Repertory Theatre stage production at the Severance Theatre, the only version I'd seen of the world's longest running musical -- it opened in New York only slightly after the dinosaurs died, finally closing in 2002 before reopening in yet another run that continues to this day -- was a slick 1995 film version starring Joel Grey on DVD. I'd been decidedly ho-hum about that experience, and I can say the same thing after watching the admittedly competent and assured production that the ART folks have put together.

To me, "The Fantasticks" (playing through April 19) is a show that has one amazing blockbuster song ("Try to Remember," as reliable as onions in the tear-provoking department) and a lot of bluster. Its small-scale charm and simplicity wear well for 20 minutes or so, then grow stale. Many of the songs themselves come across as tinny and tuneless. My suspicion is that the show became famous for running a long time not because it's such an exceptional evening of theater but that it, well, managed to run a long time. In other words, a self-fulfilling prophecy.

SG-BOB.JPGThose who attended last week's Fresno Beehive screening of "Monsters vs. Aliens" had the opportunity to pick up some special prizes. But, the winning did not stop there.

Four more prize winners are being announced. They will be given special "Monsters vs. Aliens" stuffed toys. All they had to do was read my blog and send a "Monsters vs. Aliens" comment. Each has been contacted.

The commenter known as Danielle described the movie as "cute" and "funny." Crystal talked about her anticipation at seeing the film and the commenter joyunconfined said "Most fun, of course, were the references to California, the Central Valley, and most specifically, Fresno. Comparing Fresno to Paris may be a little bit of a stretch, but it was nice to see that the reference didn't QUITE go so far as to disparage our diverse and unique hometown."

And finally, ED Castilleja called the film "memorable."

Congrats to all.

xbox 3.jpgThe big day is here. The first of the winners in the "Watchmen" contest are being announced. Yes, I know it is a day late. Blame me. It just took time to make sure all of the comments fell under the contest rules.

Here's what is going to happen. The two winners for Monday and the two for Tuesday are listed below. Each will be contacted via email. Two more winners will be announced Wednesday.

All of these runner-ups will get a prize package that includes three full size "Watchmen" posters, a set of mini posters, a "Watchmen" CD and a ticket to see the movie again.

Thursday, the winner of the myvu glasses will be announced here. And then on Friday, the winner of the "Watchmen" Xbox will be selected.

Thank you all for participating. The response was huge enough to show there is real interest in this kind of event.

Holy Taco's National Douchebag Tournament is -- like college basketball -- down to its Final Four (warning: sorta NSFW). Consider this more proof that everything, even douchbaggery, is better when in bracket form.

Final-Four-Graphic.jpg

I have a feeling Octo Mom is going to take it. She's already defeated Chris Brown, P. Diddy, Dane Cook and Perez Hilton, so she's faired well against tough competition. Barry Bonds (who beat Terrell Owens in the Elite Eight) shouldn't be close.

On the old white guy side of the bracket, Bernie Madoff and Rush Limbaugh should be a more even bout. Madoff is certainly more criminal, but when we're talking douchebags, I think Rush is tops.

If you wanna see the past brackets, go here -- again, sorta NSFW.

Perhaps I'm skipping far too ahead. But this morning, as I'm digesting the news that Gottschalks will close after being sold to a liquidator, I've found myself wondering one thing: What's gonna happen to that fancy newish G-Thing building at River Park?

BIZ KLH GOTTSCHALKS.JPG

You can't just stick a Kohl's in that thing. That's a big space, a prominent one too. And it sure would look funny sitting there all empty. So whattya think? Once this economy turns around and businesses are expanding instead of retracting, what could go there?

Crate & Barrel? Fry's Electronics? Cabo Wabo dos? The biggest Deli Delicious ever?

A couple of significant local news stories are attracting lots of comments from readers on fresnobeehive.com:

I find myself drawn to these kinds of comment strings. I guess I'm fascinated by the general tone of the remarks, and while I realize it's a very unscientific way to assess the mood of a community, it is a glimpse of the zeitgeist of a moment. In the case of the police shooting, some of the remarks are written in haste, poorly argued or just plain bizarre. It amazes me how many people are willing to pass definitive judgment -- either pro- or anti-police, say -- on an exceedingly complex incident that hasn't yet been thoroughly investigated. (More than 150 comments have been made so far about the police shooting.) Others are more measured -- wondering, for example, why this police shooting is generating so much publicity when others are virtually ignored. (Could it be that the dead man was white?, some ask.) In the case of Gottschalks, some people seem to care less that a 104-year-old Fresno mainstay will cease to exist, while others have sympathy for employees. (And anger toward management.)

One thing is clear: There's no shortage of opinions, and in this instant-feedback society of ours, it's a lot easier to keep track of them.

empire.jpg

I know I'm a geeky "Star Wars" fan, but I had the most fun over the weekend at the Golden State Film Festival, where I got to see, on the big screen, my favorite of the series "The Empire Strikes Back" with director Irvin Kershner.

Kershner introduced the movie, seemingly shocked that so many people would turn out on a Sunday night to see a 29-year-old movie. After the movie he answered questions from the audience for about 45 minutes, giving lots of little details about the movie.

His take on the movie franchise was charming, pointed (he didn't really like the newer movies) and funny.

Five things that struck me from Kershner's talk:

  1. Technology, aka CGI, has hindered movie making (putting an emphasis on the action instead of the story) and making movies feel and look more like video games.

  2. Most of 'Empire' was voiced over after the film was cut together because there was too much noise on the set.

  3. Only Kershner and actor Mark Hamill knew Darth Vader was Luke's father on set; the other actors and crew heard fake lines.

  4. Kershner hated the original script and had it re-rewritten.

  5. Kershner considers the story a fairytale not sci-fi.

So, in honor of my fun "Empire" weekend, I thought we could play a little The Beehive Asks: What's the best movie in the 'Star Wars' franchise?

narcissus.jpgThose stout defenders of "traditional values" who rail on about today's decadent entertainments and pine for the good old days obviously didn't spend much time in mythology class. The ancient Greeks were pretty twisted, at least in their stories. Daughters lusting after fathers, mothers twisting off their son's heads, stuck-up mortals being transformed into spiders and trees by jealous gods -- many of these ancient tales throb with sex, violence and the ever-present threat of years of psychotherapy. (It's no wonder that Freud loved affixing Greek names to his various complexes.) You've never quite tasted revenge until it's been served up to you in the form of your son as stew of the day.

Ruth Griffin, who directs the highly effective "Tales from Ovid" (continuing through Saturday at Fresno State's Woods Theatre), a translation of free verse by Ted Hughes, has a keen tactile sense of the inherent dysfunction of the material. She also finds a sense of human redemption within its often bizarre parameters, which is just as important.

Griffin teaches dance and physical theater at the university, and every fiber of this production pulses with movement. This title was a great pick for Griffin. By bringing together both dancers and actors from Fresno State -- and freely interchanging their duties -- she's managed to craft a show that, while not always perfect, has its own powerful rhythm. An added bonus is a moody and atmospheric original score by Fresno State music professor Brad Hufft.

I've always wanted to have a blog that called out people who don't know how to park their cars. I'd post pictures of how crappily people park so we could all laugh at them, thus quelling the urge to actually key their car.

Today I encountered an even better calling-out-lame-ass-people blog. It's called (get ready for this mouthful) People Who Sit In The Disability Seats When I'm Standing On My Crutches. Aside from perhaps the longest blog name, I've ever heard, PWSITDSWISOMC also provides us with pictures of the offenders, should you want kick them in the knees:

Greetings! I'm back in Fresno and back at The Beehive after a week-long jaunt to Boston. As I've been catching up with what I missed here in The 'No, I thought I'd share a few things I found interesting:

player.jpg

  • "Hockey returns to Fresno" is the headline I've seen in a few places, talking about the announcement of a new Fresno hockey team -- The Fresno Monsters. That name sure is more intimidating than Falcons. And the logo makes me think of energy drinks. Here's hoping Modesto starts a team called The Aliens and the two play each other.
  • We haven't talked about Cabo Wabo in a while -- but here's an update: The lawsuit between Fresno developer Milt Barbis and rocker Sammy Hagar has been settled. Unfortch for us, it's "confidential," so no new sordid details to laugh at.
  • You probably know this by now, but Fresno made it onto the front of the New York Times again. (People were talking about this even all the way out in Boston). It wasn't exactly the best news -- a look at Fresno homeless camps. FYI, today's issue of The Bee has some more Fresno homelessness reading too.

I, for one, managed a hybrid of inside stuff and outside stuff:

  • I went to the opening of "The Fantasticks" on Friday night at Severance Theatre. Look for my review by Tuesday.
  • I went shopping at Fashion Fair mall on Saturday afternoon with my parents (in town for a visit), and pondered an interesting tidbit. My mother pointed out that whenever she's in a department store cosmetics area and walks past one of the fragrance reps offering free samples, they pointedly ignore her. She's too old. Yet if a younger woman walks by next, the free-fragrance-hawkers are all over her like Britney Spears "Believe" perfume" at an eighth grade girls' locker room. So, we did an experiment. We walked through Gottschalks and she got ignored. We walked down to the Macy's women's store and got ignored. The best was in the Macy's men's store, where one of the fragrance queens practically tripped over herself to offer a sample of something (and I'm not sure what, because weren't we in the men's store?) to a vivacious, dolled-up femme fatale-like 30something strolling in front of us. When Mom walked past, Ms. Macy looked her straight in the eye and glanced away. Funny stuff.
  • I went to "Tales from Ovid" on Saturday night at Fresno State. Look for my review by Tuesday.
  • On Sunday afternoon, I went to the Lone Oak Iris Ranch on Old Friant Road. The blooms are just starting to come out, and in a couple of weeks the view will be spectacular. It's a great place: The owners let you wander the grounds looking at all the different varieties. Once I get my pics loaded, I'll post one or two.
OK, your turn.

jeff1.JPGOnce a year, Reedley's River City Theatre Company gets together and shows off.

Literally.

"Show Offs" is the annual revue during which some of the performers and musicians perform some of their favorite numbers and bits from throughout the year. The show opens tonight and performances take place through April 4 at the historic Reedley Opera House.

We caught up with Jeff Lusk, one of this season's performers, by e-mail to ask about his part in the show.

Question: What will you be performing in "Show Offs"?
Answer: I am part of the ensemble performing throughout the show. The other men and I will have a couple of our own "guy" routines and the ladies are also featured with a few of their own routines. Of course we also perform a number of songs together. Without giving too much away, we are also featuring the children of the company with their own medley.

What's your Reedley acting experience?
I have only been a part of the company since last June and have performed in "Little Shop of Horrors," "Androcles and the Lion," "Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat" and "Fanny's Up" and will be performing in "On Golden Pond" opening in April.

SG-BOB.JPGA theater full of Beehive readers got to see an advance screening of the new feature film "Monsters vs. Aliens"  last night, a day earlier than the rest of the public. The moviegoers won tickets by commenting on The Beehive. They also got a chance to win prizes by answering movie trivia before the show started.

As expected, the movie got the biggest laugh from the mention of Fresno. Our much loved city actually gets compared to Paris. And, I am not talking about Paris, Tenn.

It was surprising that many who attended the event had never been to a 3-D movie. This is a good one for a visual maiden voyage because it was designed to create a world that seems to have real depth.

My review can be found in today's 7 section in The Fresno Bee. I want to know what Beehive readers think of the movie. Post your review in the comments. A few names will be randomly pulled to win some cool "Monsters vs. Aliens" prizes. You have until midnight Sunday.

If this is your first visit to the Beehive, this screening. along with the current Xbox system being given away next week as part of a "Watchmen" promotion, should give you an idea of the fun you can expect.

In Friday's 7 section I have an interview with "Fantasticks" director Jeff White. The show opens Friday at the Severance Theatre and continues through April 19. Here's a continuation of the interview:

Question: I know that you're very interested in the physical look of a show. Did you design the sets for "Fantasticks"? How will you use the Severance space?

Answer: Yes, I tend to be a very visual person and the environment of the space is very important to me. In an arena space like Severance the set is the first thing the audience sees when they walk in to the theater. It sets the frame work for the show as well as facilitating the actors and directors sense of location. For this show I took the concepts that the writers had writing into the stage directions of a very neutral set reminiscent of commedia style performance. The set is a blank canvas for the actors to perform on. As people walk into the space they will notice some bare wood plank platforms surrounded on three sides by the audience seating in a three quarter trust configuration. My hope is that this will help the audience feel part of the show as if this were a group of traveling players that just set up their make shift stage for a street performance. The space will lie dormant until the actors bring it to life.

In two days, we've seen the best and worst of Twitter.

On the good side is Wednesday's San Francisco Chronicle story about food lovers on Twitter. I've mined the site for everything from food policy issues to tweets by AmuseBiatch, the author of a blog about Top Chef. And Gourmet magazine editor Ruth Reichl's page always is worth checking out.

On the bad side is this trend of hiring ghostwriters for Twitter. I get that Twitter is an awesome marketing tool, and that celebrities are brand names that require lots of marketing. But at least tell me who's really working the keyboard.

(For example, I never thought I'd say props to Britney Spears, but her Twitter team members deserve credit for identifying themselves.)

At least we can count on getting the real deal from Lance Armstrong and Shaq.

Shaq had the quote of the day in Thursday's story from the New York Times: "It's 140 characters. It's so few characters. If you need a ghostwriter for that, I feel sorry for you."

There is nothing harder in the world than goodbyes, and this is my time to sign off from the Beehive.

I've had a great run at the Bee for more than 21 years, and I've had a blast being part of the Beehive team: Analyzing "American Idol." Covering ArtHop nights with Donald Munro. Riffing on the latest movies. Mentioning my fave actor Alan Rickman whenever possible. Discovering the awesomeness of the Rogue Festival with Donald and Mike Oz. Smiling whenever Miss Heather turned a clever phrase or zinged an observation, or Rick Bentley gleefully let rip on a insipid TV show or Will Albritton threw himself into a blog idea. Marveling at how quickly Kathy Mahan and Joan Obra fit right into the groove of the Hive.

I'm taking a voluntary departure from the Bee and will explore what lies ahead for me. Tomorrow is my last day. I will miss my Beehive and newspaper colleagues for the daily brilliance of their talent and friendship. I will miss the many delightful Beehive commenters, such as Wet Towel and Stephen, who freely and unabashedly share their opinions.

The Brand New Heavies had a song called "World Keeps Spinning," and that's how I'll exit here. We all move on, but we cherish the people we've met along the way. I won't say goodbye, just see you later.

Hands down, "American Idol" Wednesday belonged to Adam Lambert (seen here) and Allison Iraheta. Those two soared above the other eight contenders on a night that showed why Motown songs are timeless and infectious.

The loser, surprisingly, was Lil Rounds. Everyone anticipated Motown to be her big week to shine. Didn't happen. Maybe she caved into the pressure of huge expectations. Maybe she just, again, chose the wrong song. Allison, at 16, showed what a Motown song is all about, exactly what Lil should have done. Instead, Lil just seems lost right now.

One side note: I don't know what's going on with Simon Cowell and Paula Abdul this season, but they've ratcheted up their love-hate-flirty thing. It's getting tiresome and distracting. Last night, after Allison delivered the big finale, the two judges made it all about themselves and snatched away what should have been Allison's moment for high praise. It was tacky and classless.

Here's my rundown on the Final 10. What did you think?

Daily listeners of Jack FM have probably already realized the local radio news of the day: Peak Broadcasting has flipped the format of its playing-what-we-want 105.9 FM station and made it into -- surprise! -- another KMJ.

I guess naming yours truly the dreamiest New Kid on the Block was the end of the line for Jack FM. There was no more credibility to be had.

But seriously, another conservative talk radio station? And furthermore, another KMJ?

KMJr. -- that's what I shall call it from now one -- will replay some of the content on its AM version, plus add talk shows from the likes of Glenn Beck, Dave Ramsey and Michael Savage. (See the full program schedule below). On weekends, the station will flip back to music. There's also a new Web site, kmjnow.com, being launched as part of the venture.

Sorry to be a humbug, but I think Fresno has all the KMJ it needs over on the AM dial.

Sometimes I'll come across a web site that I find hilarious, and I'll visit it every day for about three days, and then I'll forget about it until a year or two later, when it comes back into my consciousness and I go "Oh yeahhhh... I forgot I love this."

Such is the case with Planet Hiltron.com, which I was introduced to in 2007 and had forgotten about completely until two days ago. Planet Hiltron is really good at taking beautiful celebrities (and Ann Coulter) and making them look like the rest of us. Observe:

CONTEST INFO
On Thursday March 26, The Beehive will be hosting an advance screening of Dreamworks' new movie, "Monsters vs. Aliens." We'll be packing out the theater with nothing but Beehive readers. Sounds awesome, right?

Word is Fresno is mentioned a few times in the movie -- so we figured this will be like "Did They Just Say Fresno?" coming to life all 3-D like on the big screen. Bee artist Steven Parra even hooked up a "Monsters vs. Aliens" styled Scoopy for the occasion.

Wanna go? Each day we'll be picking 10 commenters at random and giving them tickets. (It'll run basically like our Big Fresno Fair ticket giveaway). So comment away, folks. ORIGINAL ENTRY: "The Fantasticks" might have played FOREVER in New York -- we're talking about 17,162 performances from 1960 through 2002, when it finally closed -- but it never quite got the same never-ending Fresno exposure. Now's your chance to see what all the fuss was about. "The Fantasticks" is the newest production from Artists' Repertory Theatre, opening Friday at the Severance Theatre. And I have two free tickets to give away.

The tickets are good for either Friday or Saturday night's 8 p.m. performances. I'll give them to the FOURTH commenter to this post. You can pick up your tickets at Will Call. No multiple entries are allowed. We won't publish comments until we have the winners. Rules are on the jump.

More tickets: Keep an eye out Thursday morning, when I'll be giving away two prime seats for the Lively Arts Foundation's 20th anniversary gala, which is set for Saturday at the Saroyan Theatre.

cmt_logo_outline_150.jpgJeff White is all over the theater news this week. Not only is he directing the new Artists' Repertory Theatre production of "The Fantasticks," which opens Friday, but he's also been named the new artistic director of Children's Musical Theaterworks. According to the company:

While also will be starting a series of performance arts classes that will run year round starting with a Spring Break theater camp this April.

Tonight's episode of "Lost" is titled "He's Our You," and if you saw the preview following last week's episode, ABC's synopsis should make perfect sense:

Things begin to unravel when one of the survivors goes rogue and takes matters into their own hands -- risking the lives of everyone on the island.

To refresh your memory, here is a video from ABC with clips from the last episode, "Namaste":

I understand when someone wants what's coming to him or her. But a battling rich couple in Connecticut look like idiots in these days when frugality is a must and so many people are just struggling to make ends meet or, worse, have lost their jobs.

Marie Douglas-David, 36, is a Swedish countess and former investment analyst. George David, 66, is former CEO of United Technologies. They married in 2002, and it slid downhill from there. Lots of sordid details about alleged cheating, etc. Time to amputate.

Except the divorce has turned into a nasty public mutilation. He's worth an estimated $329 million. She says she has to have $53,000 a week -- yeah, that's more than most people earn in a year -- to take care of homes in the Hamptons and Sweden. She also needs $1,000 a week for hair and skin treatments because, you know, you don't want to waste money on mediocre hair and skin care. And, of course, like all of us, she needs $2,200 a week for a personal assistant.

I would rather these two babies had settled this amicably. But they've declared war one each other, which means it's in the public courts. Which means we can all shake our heads in disgust. If George has any money left after this, he should skip marriage and stick with SugarDaddie.com for his future liaisons.

Loyal readers know of my fondness for "No Reservations," Bourdain's television show. Remember how I bit my knuckles watching him eat grilled caviar at Etxebarri in Spain? Or how I gripped the couch as he forked the chorizo at that restaurant?

Well, with his recent episode about Vietnam, he tempted me again:

Since watching that show a few weeks ago, I've had a serious craving for bánh mì. It's been a long time since I've had this sandwich and its lovely Vietnamese-French flavors.

Given the Valley's large Southeast Asian population, might it be possible to find one nearly as good as this? I probably won't get the fried egg (sigh), but please, give me a good baguette stuffed with pork, cilantro, jalapeños, picked carrots and daikon, cucumber, pâté and mayonnaise.

Luckily, Dave Williams, also known as PolarBear at Chowhound, has indulged in this particular obsession. Based on his recommendations and some follow-up e-mails, here's where I'm headed:

May Cafe To Go
2327 N. Fresno St. # 102
(559) 225-7990

Paradise Restaurant (also known as Pho Paradise)
1848 N. 1st St.
(559) 264-9025

Anyone else have a tried-and-true source in the Valley?

LIF_EPZ_LITTLE_WOMEN_FIGHT.JPGAs sturdy as a hoop skirt, "Little Women" is a classic story. But it's an odd choice for transformation into a Broadway musical.

On one hand, the original novel by Louisa May Alcott (and the movies based upon that classic) is a solid serving of Americana. The story of the spirited, no-nonsense Jo March and her three upstanding sisters growing up without a father during the Civil War has delighted countless girls and women who were drawn to the material's strong female characters and empowering storylines.

I'm sure that that this sense of empowerment was one of the major draws for the creative team of "Little Women" the musical (book by Allan Knee, music by Jason Howland and lyrics by Mindi Dickstein). They sensed a rhythm, a tempo -- a tune, if you will -- in the material. After all, that's what a musical is all about, right? It's supposed to sing?

Yet I'm not convinced that the creators of "Little Women," which had a relatively short run on Broadway in 2005, were truly able to capture the "inner music" of this story. It's a pleasant show, yes, and this Good Company Players production is well done, and there are parts that are stirring and strong. But in the end I'm not sure this version of "Little Women" finds its voice as a musical. For all the strong vocals from this talented cast, it didn't really sing to me. At best, it's nice. And I'm not sure that's enough.

my_boys.JPGThe one question I get asked all the time is "Who is the nicest celebrity you have interviewed?' That's always been a hard question to answer. I tend to get the chance to talk with celebrities when they are trying to promote a television show or movie. The celebrities always seem to be on their best behavior.

When pressed, my answer has been Tom Hanks. The guy has two Oscars. He's appeared in some of the biggest movies ever. And yet, he always comes across like a guy you have known since high school. He makes every interview a pure joy.

Now Hanks has some competition.

Yes, Nadya "Did I mention I've hatched 14 kids?" Suleman has her issues. But isn't Dr. Phil part of the problem. Hungry to bolster his sagging ratings, Dr. Phil latched onto Suleman's predicament like a hungry baby latches onto her mother's, uh, well, you know. He's had her on his show several times and coaxed Octu-Mom to agree having Angels in Waiting help care for the kids for free.

Now Suleman has gone rogue on Dr. Phil, just like Britney did more than a year ago. Suleman has fired the nannies because she says they were spying on her. It's time for Dr. Phil to step away from this disaster and other publicity-rooted episodes. Besides, Octu-Mom probably wants a new TV enabler: I'm thinking Dr. Drew Pinsky will fill that bill.

In case you missed it, The Bee ran this Chicago Tribune story about diners asking for separate checks.

The observation: With the economy in shambles, fewer people want to pay for their friends.

If you're watching your wallet, this makes a lot of sense. Why contribute to someone else's booze and dinner when you've just had a salad and water?

In flush times, it was easier to swallow any resentment and fork over the cash. But this economy encourages diners to just say no.

So, here are some questions for customers, servers and restaurant owners: Diners, are you still splitting the bill equally, or are you asking for itemized checks? Restaurant owners and servers, do you have a preference? If so, tell us why.

On Friday I posted a reminder about a new exhibit opening at the Fresno Metropolitan Museum. (Here's a link to the story that Felicia wrote about ""Anna Richards Brewster: American Impressionist," which opened Saturday). In that post I alluded to pressing fiscal problems at the museum.

Bee reporter George Hostetter expanded on those issues with a big, somber Page A1 investigative report Saturday about the museum's woes:

Interviews and documents show that the expansion plans were too ambitious, the renovation expenses too high, the oversight either nonexistent or ineffective. The Met can't figure out how to repay a $15 million bank loan coming due in about two months, faces mounting legal problems from unpaid creditors, and is awash in red ink. The city, which guaranteed the bank loan, is looking for ways to help, and the museum has successfully cut expenses in recent weeks. But over the last four months, The Met still spent nearly $2 for every dollar it took in.

George's take on the museum's situation is disturbing and worrisome. I'm curious what Beehive readers think. One observation: No one in officialdom seems to be broaching the thoroughly depressing thought that the plan to convert an old newspaper building into a museum was flawed from the start. If so, is there a way out of this mess?

I'm catching up on some light reading from recent days when, lo and behold, Alex Rodriguez -- the mess once known as baseball's savior -- is in the news again.

First, it turns out that A-Fraud wasn't only shooting up steroids not too long ago but allegedly seeking other services -- as in, the services of a woman who ran a prostitution ring.

Then, there's this disturbing "let me kiss myself" photo that is appearing with a story in Details magazine. Let your Freudian intrepretations run amok. Finally, in April, Selena Roberts' much anticipated biography of A-Rod will be released. It should be juicy (pardon the pun) because Roberts is the one who broke the story in Sports Illustrated about A-Rod's steroid use.

At this point, Rodriguez might as well 'fess up to every other dirty deed he's done. The guy's reputation is in Mt. Everest freefall. The only "good" side to this? My annual prediction that the N.Y. Yankees -- for as long as A-Rod is an albatross hung around the team's neck -- will again fail to win the World Series.

So, apparently the guys from "Miami Ink" are getting into the fashion biz -- the baby fashion biz.

In this Miami Herald story, the tattoo artists say that there just aren't any onesies cool enough for their kids, so they've created new, dripping-in-coolness outfits for their babes.

I have to say that I think some of the designs are pretty cool ... but I think it's kind of dumb to pay $26 for basically a T-shirt with snaps that the kid will outgrow in a couple months and is guaranteed to get puked on and/or pooped in. I can definitely see the appeal for an older tot.

So, what do you think, cool or not?

The scene inside: cozy, warm and crowded. Some people are undoubtedly refugees from the rained-on Rally in the Valley peace festival being held outside at Eaton Plaza. Many others are Sunday afternoon library regulars: a line to use the computers, readers browsing the stacks, youngsters scampering as their mothers load up on children's books. All the newspapers at the Reader Service desk are checked out. One man returns the Sunday copy of the L.A. Times and another pounces on it.

Click here to hear Reese Witherspoon and Seth Rogen

That was her response to me Friday when asked about the number of jokes about Fresno in her new animated feature film "Monsters vs. Aliens." The film opens Friday. Witherspoon provides the voice of Susan, a Modesto woman who turns into a giant when she gets hit by a meteor.

She and co-star Seth Rogen, the voice of B.O.B. in the film, are quick to add that Fresno comes out pretty well in the movie. It is San Francisco that takes the brunt of the alien attack.

Sure, the Golden Gate Bridge takes a hit. But, there are no jokes about the city. There are plenty about Fresno.

So here it is: I hated last night's episode of "The Office." Hated it. All of it.

This is the first time I've ever watched a half-hour episode and thought throughout the entire thing, "I wish it was over."

I hated Jim. Hated Pam. Hated Dwight. And HATED Michael. Hated Michael so much that at the end, when he quit, I actually said aloud, "Good."

I'm actually starting to wonder if "The Office" has officially run its course. The jokes aren't as funny, the characters have become caricatures of their former selves, and the thing that made it so appealing, the extraordinary ordinariness of life in an office, has been replaced by over-the-top antics and outlandish behavior from characters who used to be somewhat relatable.

I almost feel like I could miss the rest of this season and be okay with it. Am I totally missing the mark here? What did you think?

News from the arts scene:

brewster_6.JPG

The Fresno Metropolitan Museum is finally ready to move past its ho-hum grand-opening show, "Boeing 747 Dinosaurs," or "It's a Bird! It's a Plane! It's an Extinct Creature!," or whatever it was called -- it's no secret I didn't like it much -- and is opening an exhibition titled "Anna Richards Brewster: American Impressionist." Opening day is Saturday, and you can look forward to a story in The Bee's Life section tomorrow by Felicia Matlosz. (Update: Here's the link.) The Met describes the exhibition:

This innovative and comprehensive exhibition encompasses Anna Richards Brewster's (1870 - 1952) works in oil, watercolor, gouache, and pen designs for book-illustration. It brings together paintings and prints from private and public collections to resurrect the reputation of an artist who was one of the best-known American woman artists at the turn of the century, and who at the age of 20, won the prestigious Dodge Prize at the National Academy of Design for the best picture by a woman artist in 1890.

This sounds like an interesting show. These are tough times for the Met, and I'm excited and anxious to see how the newly renovated facility makes the transition from its opening "blockbuster" exhibit to this fine-arts offering.

On the jump: Visit Italy with the Fresno Community Concert Band, and mark your calendars for two notable visiting college classical-music ensembles.

Well, I got it half right. I predicted Alexis Grace would be in this week's bottom two on "American Idol," with Lil Rounds, and wondered if the judges would use the new rule: a one-time rescue of a singer from an elimination round.

Some see Alexis' exit as a shocker because she was an early favorite. Not me. Her version of "Jolene" was just OK. She and Michael Sarver dropped to the bottom. The judges gave Alexis a second shot, probably because she was an early favorite. But, after she plowed through "Jolene" again," it was a no go. At least it puts to rest the story that the fix was in, with Alexis part of the Final Four.

I still say Lil, another early favorite, should have been in the bottom two. She was oddly disconnected from the emotional song "Independence Day." We'll see how Lil and the others do next week.

US_NEWS_CONGRESS-AIG_3_ABA.JPG

The knife that AIG stuck in our backs just won't come out. You know the latest: $165 million in bonuses paid to employees in a company that's sucking up billions of taxpayers' dollars to stay alive.

None of this makes sense to anyone living in the real world, and President Obama and congress are trying to fix the problem. (That's the AIG chairman/CEO Edward Liddy at a hearing today with some greeters.) Well, I have my own ideas for getting justice from any AIG or former AIG type who got the dough and won't return it:

  • You have to volunteer time at a soup kitchen or shelter. There, you'll come face to face with lots of folks who are victims of this greed-stoked economic crisis and will want your full attention.
  • You should go on "Oprah" and spill your guts about your stupidity and selfishness.
  • You have to pick up trash at the tent cities that have popped up in places like Sacramento.
  • You must spend the rest of your life supporting Octu-Mom Nadya Suleman's 14 kids.

Anybody else got ideas?

When Bee Web master Jennifer Ward started talking about a story in the Turlock Journal on Mother Teresa being seen in a slice of cheese, I just had to read the story.

I didn't think anything could be more entertaining than the joining of Mother Teresa and a slice of Hickory Farms Apple Pie Cheddar. But, I think this line just might be the best quote ever seen in a story:

"As soon as I cut the cheese I felt better."

I can't stop laughing.

Ashley Taylor, part of the cast of the new production of "Little Women" opening Thursday at Roger Rocka's Dinner Theater, reminds me that "Footloose" isn't the only chance to burn calories on stage. She writes:

I just read your Sunday Spotlight column on the "Footloose Diet," and I have to say, I was so jealous of the workout that cast got... but "Little Women," as it turns out, is nothing to shake a hoop at.

Martini drinkers, get yourselves some Castelvetrano olives.

I found these olives last weekend in a cooking class at The Chef's Table, where chef Malachi Harland uses them in salads.

He's not the only one. Turns out these olives are all the rage in the Bay Area.

The San Francisco Chronicle's description of the "mild, buttery flavor" and "meaty texture" says it all. Because they're not overwhelming, Castelvetranos pair well with other foods and drinks. (Like salads and martinis.)

Frankly, I prefer them tucked into dishes, because they're a little too mild on their own.

So, who sells them in the Valley? The olive bar at Whole Foods Market in Fig Garden Village and Chef's Helper Unlimited, a Fresno company that sources specialty foods for restaurants. Chef's Helper says it sells Castelvetranos to The Chef's Table and Jack & Charlie's in Visalia. For the rest of us, Chef's Helper is tweaking its web site for online sales. I'll keep you posted.

Come along with me, friends, on a trip back in time. It was 1992. MTV had launched a tiny little show about seven strangers picked to live in a house -- a show that would ruin for all time episodic television as we knew it.

The show was "The Real World" and it spawned the first reality show breakout star, Eric Nies, who went on to host illustrious MTV dance show "The Grind" (or, "The Groynd" in Nies-speak), and who most recently starred on the saddest show ever, VH1's "Confessions of a Teen Idol," which documented previously famous teen idols, now middle aged men, attempting to achieve the dizzying heights of fame recaptured by mentor Scott Baio in recent years.

"Confessions" doesn't seem to have resuscitated Nies' career, but the following pictures might do the trick. The story begins with a dog chasing some geese on a frozen lake, and ends with a fully-naked Nies climbing out of water that can't be good for him or his Little Groynd.

Take a look:

Country-western music is not my thing, but it sure produced a beguiling development on "American Idol" Tuesday night: People, we have a contest.

With 11 singers left, the Grand Ole Opry theme leveled out the playing field. Front runners stumbled (Adam Lambert, what was that mess you made last night?) while one guy who faltered badly last week redeemed himself (Anoop Desai).

Randy Travis was the guest coach (Geez, did you see how thin that guy is? Someone needs to ply him with some steaks, stat!), and he didn't seem to help much. Which may be why Tuesday's performances were, at times, off kilter. Several singers sleepwalked through the front parts of their songs and then tried to salvage them by blasting through the second parts. Not impressive.

The best of the night? Matt Giraud (seen here), who is fast becoming the dark horse in this race. He's someone I couldn't have picked out of a lineup two weeks ago but he's winning me over with his versatility and voice.

Here's my rundown on Tuesday's show. What did you think?

*OK, me and a couple hundred other journalists.

So I'm currently sitting on this Jonas Brothers conference call I told you about earlier in the week and, basically, it's a lot of listening and note-taking. Journalists from newspapers and magazines around the country are on the call asking questions about the band's upcoming tour.

The sucky thing so far is that the Jonas guys keep cutting in and out, so we're not getting everything they're saying.

Still, here are some tidbits that might be of interest:

  • One of the first questions was from a reporter in Minnesota, who wanted to know how the band justified the $80+ ticket price for their concert there -- specifically in the current economy. The Jonas guys talked up how they wanted to wow their fans with all the staging so they stepped it up, which then jumped up the price. The reporter kept asking whether they thought the ticket prices were too expensive. Eventually, one of the guys -- maybe Joe? -- snapped back: "Sir, I think you've asked your follow-up question. I think it's time to move on."
  • A few notes for Jonas fans: The band won't reveal the title of its upcoming album yet. And the tour, they say, will be in the round. "There are more front row seats," Nick said.
  • On getting made fun of on "South Park" last week, Nick said three of them like to make fun of themselves, but added: "We're so focused on what we're doing on this tour and our album that we didn't have too much time to see it."
  • Somebody from E! Online just asked if "first daughters Sasha and Malia automatically get front-row tickets to the show?" Great stuff, E!
  • Here's a quote for you guys to have fun with: "Nothing we do is pushed on us."

UPDATE: When I finally got my shot, I asked questions from Beehive commenters Josephine and Selina

  • About starting small in Fresno and growing to the big arena, (I think it was) Nick said: "Moving from small venues to where we are today, it goes right back to our fans. Without them we wouldn't be anywhere. They're the ones who stuck around through everything."

  • About their favorite fan posters, he said: "We've seen some really funny signs. I like the ones that say how many miles [the fans] came from."

hblickenstaffdiva200d.jpgGOOD TENTATCLE DAY: Devoted Fresno followers of Heidi Blickenstaff -- the Good Company Players alum whose Broadway career is really revving up these days -- have a lot to keep track of. After her starring performance in "[title of show,]" the spunky little musical that made it all the way to Broadway, she returned to the powerhouse show "The Little Mermaid" for a limited run. In her first engagement with "Mermaid," she understudied the major role of Ursula the Sea Witch. Now she's back nightly as a replacement for Ursula through April 5. She dropped me an email recently from New York and wrote about the character:

She's a pastiche of Madeline Kahn, Patti Lupone, Shirley Temple, Hannibal Lecter, Mae West, Bette, Judy, Cher... I could go on and on. She's so schizo... I love her. She is delicious... I'm learning so much. I feel so lucky to have had [title of show] and Mermaid back to back like this. They are opposites in almost every way, and yet both are so exciting and fulfilling.

Broadway.com did a very fun slideshow feature documenting the grueling process that Heidi undergoes each night to transform into Ursula. And she talked last week in Playbill.com's well-known "Diva Talk" column about what it's like to shift from understudy to starring role -- and what the future holds for her. It's a delightful interview, so check it out.

On the jump: "Little Women" all set for a Thursday opening at Roger Rocka's, a fond farewell to "Footloose," the Reedley River City Players gear up for "Show Offs," and an 85-year-old actor threatens to steal the show in the upcoming Lindsay Community Theater production of "Damn Yankees."

1. We got a freakin' blogroll. Finally, right? Welcome to Blogville, circa 2005. Hey, but we're darn excited about it. We hope it continues to blossom with more Fresno blogs.

2. You can now access all of our regular features with a click of your mouse. That means you can re-visit all the Worst Flier of the Week posts whenever you evil little heart desires. It's not totally up and running yet. You know how many posts we have to go back and re-categorize? Give us a few days. Those of you who like to navigate via tags will like that addition as well.

3. We can show off our 'Featured Posts.' See that over on the right? We'll use that space to give a little more love to good posts that might have slipped off the front page because of our sometimes overly prolific blogitude.

4. We all have short bios now. If you go to our individual pages, you can read more about the Beehivers. Just hit the + next to our name.

5. Mas scoopy! We love Scoopy. You should be seeing more of him around here.

**Shout out to the designers, coders and planners who made the new Beehive happen!

It is if you believe what you read in the New York Daily News "Gatecrasher" column. A big mouth "American Idol" staffer is running around saying the Final Four will be Danny Gokey, Alexis Grace, Adam Lambert and Lil Rounds. The staffer is quoted as saying this:

"Adam Lambert and Lil Rounds are better singers and musicians than Gokey and Grace, but they're too much like past winners and 'A' successes ...Adam's too close in style and sound to Chris Daughtry, while Lil Rounds is a dead ringer for Fantasia. Even their background stories are similar! ... The producers really want it to be Danny or Alexis. They think they're very commercially viable, have a good image and a great story."

So, now that new rule -- which lets the judges save a contestant before the series whittles down to the last five singers -- becomes much more interesting.

As in "can you say manipulative?" interesting.

Jonas Brothers.JPG

I got word over the weekend that I'm going to be on a conference call with the Jonas Brothers on Wednesday. Sometimes when a band is about to start a tour, they'll have a conference call where a bunch of journalists call in and ask questions -- thus doing like 250 interviews at once.

It works for the artists. Kinda sucks for journalists. You're lucky if you even get to ask a question. But what are you doing to do? It's either this or not talk to the Jonas Brothers at all.

Since this is how things work, I often find myself on these calls trying to think of one really great question. Then I have to hope nobody else asks it before I do. They usually do. So then I gotta think of something new.

If you've ever wanted to do my job, I'll kinda let you right here. Give me your best Jonas Brothers question. If it's a good one, maybe I'll ask it on the conference call.

A word about Fresno tickets: According to the Jonas Brothers Fan Club and tour promoter Live Nation, pre-sales for the Aug. 5 date at Save Mart Center will start at 10 a.m. on March 23. Tickets will go on sale to the public at 10 a.m. March 28. Neither Live Nation or the Save Mart Center have announced ticket prices.

Every once in awhile, while speaking of certain relatives of mine who shall go nameless, I reference the 1975 documentary "Grey Gardens." Very rarely does anyone know what I am talking about.

"Grey Gardens" is about Jackie Kennedy Onassis' aunt, Edith "Big Edie" Beale, and Beale's daughter, Little Edie, who lived alone together for a number of years in a dilapidated mansion in East Hampton. Big Edie and Little Edie's story became well-known when a magazine article showed that the pair had been living in absolute squalor, nearly isolated from the world, for some time, and that their run-down home, Grey Gardens, was in danger of being torn down.

HBO has just released a two-minute trailer for its upcoming film based on the life of the Beales and starring Drew Barrymore and Jessica Lange. It seems worth checking out, mostly because Barrymore's impression of Little Edie is spot on:

Whether you see this film or not, I highly recommend seeing the original documentary. Here's a clip so you can see for yourself whether Barrymore does Little Edie justice:

rentHS.jpgI finally got a chance on Sunday afternoon to see the California Arts Academy school-edition production of "RENT" -- and I'm sure glad I did. (Thanks to the buzz-building Beehive commenters, including Stephen, who saw this show during the Rogue Festival and talked it up.) I thought the production, which I saw at its closing performance, was passionate and powerful. Director Daniel Chavez Jr. truly soared in this effort. In many ways this version affected me as deeply as professional productions I've seen of "RENT."

One thing that surprised me was how true this "school edition" was to the show's original themes. Yes, the profanity is pretty much excised, and the stylized "orgy scene" is of course gone. This production faded to black instead of delivering a male-male kiss, and the overall optimistic raunchiness in such lyric-intensive numbers as "La Vie Boheme" was toned down.

But, with all that said ... It was still "Rent" through and through, which such themes as AIDS, drug use, gay relationships -- not to mention the show's cheerful soak-the-capitalist fever, which trips lightly off the tongue in these economically grueling times -- as strong as ever. Indeed, the New York Times recently had a story about how the "RENT" school edition has stirred controversy in various parts of the country. (But not Fresno! Yet.)

The Hollywood Reporter says that a film based on 80s TV masterpiece "MacGyver" is in the works. Unlike the massacring of other cultural icons from my childhood, I think this movie stands a greater chance of not sucking.

But I wonder: who should play the new MacGyver? Richard Dean Anderson, the original Macgyver, always seemed like a normal guy with abnormal abilities. It seems like any "name" actor (your Matt Damons and Matthew McConaugheys, for example) wouldn't be able to pull off that understated brilliance (or that amazing mullet).

I admit I'm stumped. I can't think of a single person who fits the bill. What say you?

UPDATE: According to People, the warrant for Lindsay Lohan no longer exists. Apparently, she is in compliance with her alcohol education classes, as evidenced by the night and day Lindsay spent just after learning of her warrant. Highlights include:

-- standing outside Jack Nicholson's house, shouting his name until she was let through the gate
--Twittering incomprehensibly about the arrest warrant
-- arguing so loudly with girlfriend Samantha Ronson that police were called when sounds of a window breaking were heard from Ronson's house
-- these pictures

If those aren't the actions of a person who has graduated alcohol education class, I don't know what are. Congrats, Lindsay -- you're doing just fine.

Original post: A warrant has been issued for Lindsay Lohan stemming from her arrest in 2007 for D.U.I. hit and run. According to TMZ:

"The Beverly Hills PD says the warrant is for $50,000 and it was issued in connection with her DUI case back in 2007, for which she is on probation. The PD would not specifically say why they want Lohan, but we think it's a good bet it has something to do with violating the terms of probation ... either failing to attend her alcohol ed courses or, perhaps, not taking or failing a drug test."

Excuse me, but is Julia Roberts getting prettier?

I know, I know. Botox and other cosmetic enhancements have come a long way, but all you have to do is look at a picture of Madonna or Nicole Kidman to know that these beauty aids are heavy on the aid, less so on the actual beauty.

(CAA cleverly positioned this production as both a Rogue offering and then a standalone show, which certainly helped expand its audience base.) Beehive commenter Stephen had some issues with the sound design, but he gave the show a rousing recommendation on the reader-review Rogue Beehive post:

RENT the junior edition features some amazing talent, both in the cast and band. I was worried the 'junior' edition would cut too much from the meat of the show, but amazingly all it does is cut the cuss words (replacing them flawlessly...only huge fans will notice, and still won't care). Also cut the orgy number, but duh, of course they did ... Director Daniel Chavez has stretched these kids to a new level for each and every one of them, and it's very impressive.

Here are the sights and sounds that caught my attention in recent days:

  • Jim "Mad Money" Cramer must be a masochist. Jon Stewart (seen here with Cramer) has been hammering the business cable personality Cramer and CNBC for their look-the-other way financial reporting the past year. Then Cramer decides to go on Stewart's show. Guess who won.

  • Rats, I totally forgot to catch George Clooney's return to "ER" Thursday. Thank goodness for Hulu.

  • Maybe it's just me, but Olympics titan Michael Phelps' appearance on the "Today" show this morning to explain the bong incident wasn't very convincing. He still won't directly say he smoked anything. Shoot, even A-Roid admitted he took steroids. Phelps better hope he comes across a lot more sincere on the full-length "Dateline" interview Sunday.

  • Are you an iPhone/iPod Touch user who's also an "American Idol" fan? This app's for you.

  • And, finally, Michael Jackson has sold out his 50 concerts slated for London this summer. I'm betting he actually performs nowhere near 50, more like 4 or 5 ... Or maybe this is a huge hoax. Like the show's mostly dancers, videos and voice-overs and he makes only a cameo appearance and calls that a concert. Either way, it's a waste of money.

Gabriela_Montero.JPGUPDATE 3/13: Another passionate response has come in from a classical-musical fan in response to Gabriela Montero's recent concert. Thomas Sawyer writes that "after sitting [through] the first half I had to get out!!!" You can read more on the jump.

ORIGINAL ENTRY: Pianist Gabriela Montero packed the house Friday night for the latest installment of the Keyboard Concerts series at Fresno State. This accomplished musician -- who recently gained fame as a member of the quartet that played a new adaptation of "Simple Gifts" at President Obama's inauguration -- scrapped her announced concert program and opted to play an entirely improvised concert. (She's become quite well known for her strong improvisational abilities.) Here's how it worked: Members of the audience volunteered musical themes by singing a tune for her. She then proceeded to play a five-minute-plus piece based upon that theme, totally impromptu.

Sound impressive? It was. (I was there working on a general feature story on Keyboard Concerts and its artistic director, Andreas Werz, and I thought it was remarkable how smooth and fluently Montero conjured her improvisations.) Not everyone was pleased at the change in program, however. Local classical pianist Shirley Kirsten offers this view:

After noting that Montero had originally programmed Baroque and Romantic period works from the mainstream piano repertoire as part one of her concert, I was disappointed that she served our audience only a portion of what was promised. It was an evening of only impromptu offerings and not a complete and satisfying sharing of the artist's towering talent.

UPDATE: The answer: Mr. Belding! Or Dennis Haskins, if your his kin. Shouts out to commenters Tanya and Fatphree who nailed it. JT Snow and Willie Mays were also announced as this year's celebrity guests today.

ORIGINAL: This week the Fresno Grizzlies are announcing all their promotions for the season. They've announced their fireworks night and their giveaways. Today they will be announcing their theme nights and theme jerseys. But I'm waiting for Friday, when they announce what's most interesting to me -- their celebrity guests.

As you might recall, the Grizzlies brought Billy Zabka (aka Johnny Lawrence from the Cobra Kai Dojo) to Fresno last year for Totally Rad '80s Night.

The Griz brass have been teasing me this week, saying they have somebody bigger than Zabka lined up. (Who's bigger than Zabka?!?) I've tried to get it out of them. I asked if it was Biff Tannen. I asked if it was Vicki from "Small Wonder." No, I was told on both counts. Better.

They offered the following tidbit today: It's going to be called "Mad Tight '90s Night" and it's happening May 14. Who could it be? I'm not sure yet. Zack Morris? Bobby Brown? Either of those would be tight. But I know there's tighter people out there. Until the Grizzlies announce it tomorrow (they're doing it live on "Great Day" at 9:20 a.m.) all we have is guesses. So gimme yours.

Who do you think the Grizzlies are bringing for Mad Tight '90s Night?

Rihanna-and-Chris-Brown-001.jpg

UPDATE: People magazine and other outlets reported March 13 that there was no duet recorded last month. Unfortunately, this won't be the last twist in the Rihanna/Chris Brown story.

----------------------------------------------------------

Incredible. Chris Brown has recorded a song with Rihanna -- the woman he allegedly beat up Feb. 21 -- just days after he was charged with assaulting her.

CNN.com says that's confirmed by record producer Polow Da Don, who worked with them on the recording. It's a sad and alarming turn in this story. Yes, there are those who say we don't know all the facts of this case. But we do know what the police report says happened that night. And we've seen the photo taken of Rihanna's face after the incident.

Rihanna's turmoil is playing out in public, but there are so many other women who are victims of domestic violence every day. Adding to the disturbing nature of this saga are the young fans of both performers. They must be wondering what the heck to make of all this. Or, worse, they're getting mixed signals of what's allowed and what should never happen.

For anybody with even the slightest doubt, this is the rule: A man should never hit a woman. Ever. Period.

Oprah Winfrey, who devoted an entire segment of her show this week to "dating violence," put it best: "If a man hits you once, he will hit you again."

Creative Fresno is still looking for presenters for Pecha Kucha Night No. 2 -- happening Monday at Starline. If you're an artist, designer or just have something visual you'd like to show, consider it. Presenters get to show 20 slides, each for 20 seconds, making for a series of rapid-fire 6:40 displays. A rocker (Kathy) and a hip-hopper (Mike) discuss "Scream," the new solo CD from ex-Soundgarden singer Chris Cornell, recorded entirely with mega-producer Timbaland.

Mike: I've been intrigued by this Chris Cornell/Timbaland collabo album since I heard about it. Note that I didn't say I looked forward to it or anticipated it. More than anything, I was curious. Timbaland, of course, is responsible for Justin Timberlake's "FutureSex/LoveSounds." I figured that's what he'd be bringing to the table on "Scream" -- I just wasn't sure how that would mesh with throaty rock vocals. My big question is this: Who's going to listen to this? I can't see Cornell's rock fans getting behind the blips and beeps of Timbo and I can't see the Timberlake audience latching onto Cornell -- despite the influx of ads I'm seeing on MySpace.

Kathy: You're right, Mike. I think rockers are going to have that WTF moment (Kind of like a co-worker today who was startled, dumbfounded and apparently quite disturbed to hear the tunes coming from my office were that of Cornell). The whole collaboration took me by surprise. I knew Chris Cornell had a solo album coming out, but I assumed it would be a rock album. What else would you think a guy who was in Soundgarden and Audioslave would do? Add in that he co-wrote the David Cook's hit "Light On" and it all adds up to a mainstream rock album. Boy was I wrong.

At least no one among the 13 finalists dared sing Michael Jackson's "Thriller."

The "American Idol" producers' decision to highlight songs Tuesday from the King of Pop's catalog produced a weird evening. For one thing, the songs are iconic, too closely identified with MJ. It also didn't help that the judges were in a demanding mood. Even Paula Abdul voiced some negative opinions.

None of the singers totally clunked in the singing department. No screechy or missed notes. No one tripped, although a couple unsuccessfully tried to dance. Yikes. So it came down to presentation. Adam Lambert (seen here) ruled the night. The rest of the show mostly bogged down. I will say this: the guys way outperformed the gals this week.

On tonight's show, there's some kind of surprise change in the rules. I hope it's not some lame gimmick.

As for Tuesday night's performances, here' my take. What did you think?

I don't pretend to know about fashion (that's Kathy's territory), but I do understand that most runway shows are about presenting a designer's ideas in a very showy, artistic way. What you see on the runway is not what you're going to find on the rack at Macy's.

Still, when I see something overly ridiculous, I feel it should be brought to the public's attention, and then mocked. Take Alexander McQueen's 2009 Fall/Winter runway show. Is it artistic? Yeah. But also kind of silly.

flea2.jpgI've become a pretty big Magnus Chhan fan recently. Rail-thin in appearance and gentle in stage demeanor, this biology/theater double major at Fresno City College has really spiffed up the last two plays I've seen him in. First there was his hilariously low-key turn in Fresno City College's "Jack Goes Boating." (You can see him in a photo from that play on the jump.) And now, he takes one of the cleverest gimmicks in the college's new production of "A Flea in Her Ear" and cheerfully keeps the laughs coming.

Chhan's turn as Camille Chandebise -- a character who, alas, cannot pronounce his consanants, which makes him sound more mushy mouthed than Marlon Brando in "The Island of Dr. Moreau" -- is one of the highlights of David Ives' adaptation of Georges Feydeau's classic French farce. Other strong components of the show include a wacky production design and some well-calibrated comic performances.

Still, "Flea" is not as madcap and fluid as I'd have hoped. It's a little lackluster when it comes to the farce department. Director Debbi Shapazian comes close at times to reaching the zany impact that the play needs, but the overall impact is much more cute than giddy.

Beehive colleague Rick Bentley today already posted about the two dancers who will fill in for recently injured hoofers on "Dancing with the Stars." (Is this show cursed when it comes to injuries?) I just had to add my two-cents worth about Monday's Season 8 premiere:

  • Lil' Kim undoubtedly achieved a first for the show: She dedicated her debut dance to the inmates she shared prison time with at the Philadelpha Detention Center. The rapper in 2005 was found guilty of conspiracy and lying to a federal grand jury. We don't know if the gals at PDC saw the show.
  • Melissa Rycroft, unceremoniously dumped by still-a-jerk Jason Mesnick on "The Bachelor," gets a rousing welcome as a last-minute replacement for an injured Nancy O'Dell. With maybe 48 hours of prep time, she delivered a lovely waltz with partner Tony Dovolani.
  • I'm guessing pro Karina Smirnoff knew she had a dud in Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak (he earns a few points for pure exuberance). How else do you explain her barely there black lingerie costume? Maybe the strategy was to get people's eyes off Wozniak. Doubt it worked.
  • Finally, we need to vote for Gilles Marini (seen here with partner Cheryl Burke). He's not a star, but he had a memorable role in last year's movie, "Sex and the City." He actually can dance but, even if he couldn't, keep him on the show, America.

As a diehard "24" fan, I knew that the show's writers/producers had their work cut out for them this season. They had to rebound from both their weakest season and the year and a half break that followed it, because of the writer's strike. Plus they had to earn back the faith of fans who started to question their plans for our hero, Jack Bauer.

Now that we're 13 hours in, I'm ready to call Season 7 a success. It's given us a change of scenery, new characters to care about and kept me at the edge of my seat numerous times already. The last three or four weeks have been especially great.

I say all that to set up this: We're reached a point in the 24 storyline where things have been known to trail off and become lame. I'm not going to spoil anything if you didn't see last night's episode, but it was a bit of a reset, with a few new storylines thrown into the mix. I'm hoping they don't become cliché and muddled.

Basically what I'm saying is that I reserve to the right to take back calling this season a "success" if they make the president's daughter into another Kim Bauer.

OK, so where are the "24" watchers at? What do you guys think so far? Has Season 7 won you back?

Most car commercials are unbearable. Not as awful as the pharmaceutical ads offering you diarrhea and bleeding ulcers in exchange for clearing up your pet allergies, but still pretty bad.

The problem with car commercials is that they try to sell you on a life you probably will never have: careening around mountain curves with reckless abandon, hauling your boat to the marina with your camera-ready kids who don't fight over space and make only easily wiped up messes in the backseat, loading 75 tons of concrete into the bed of your truck then balancing it on the edge of a cliff...

It just seems like these commercials should reflect real life more accurately. Real life is mundane, filled with petty emotions like jealousy and misplaced superiority, and rife with -- what's the word I'm looking for? Oh yes. Violence.

Thank goodness Andy Richter gets it:

purplehat.jpgDonald writes:

Purple Hat, the nom de plume for the Fresno photographer who is one-half of the new March show at Spectrum Gallery, doesn't take photos of anything he can drive to.

This self-imposed manifesto puts him beyond the limits experienced by amateur weekend photographers content to traipse the highways and byways of the Valley seeking the glories of nature. Purple Hat prefers the kind of locales that are accessible only by sweat and calories. In a 21-day trip he took last August to the high Sierra, Mr. Hat conquered California's highest lakes by swimming (and photographing) them. The highest, situated a bit over 13,000 feet, was 51 degrees. "I was really glad when I got out of it," he says nonchalantly.

The swimming was secondary to the photography, however. Purple Hat's show, which he calls "The Source," features the artist's massive panoramic landscape views. He's joined by Madera photographer Bob Barks, whose "Terra Homini, An Exhibition of B & W Nudes" has a completely different emotional feel than P.H.'s big, enthusiastic glimpses of nature. It's an interesting combination.

As I usually do after breakfast, I got ready to go for a swim in my apartment complex's heated, indoor pool. This is when things fell apart.

The pool is no longer heated. According to the office manager, the heat is turned off in March, and the patio furniture is dragged to the outdoor, unheated pool for those who enjoy swimming in what looks like tree blossom gazpacho. Have you been outside today, friends? It's sunny, yes. But it's also windy and still winter. Swimming weather? Not even close, and, for someone like me who is always freezing cold, it won't be for a few more months.

So, in one fell swoop, there went all my plans to get in shape prior to summer. Unfortunately, I have bad knees (thank you, high school colorguard), so swimming is where exercise begins and ends for me. Is this the worst thing in the world? No. But it's pretty damn irritating.

Before I go vandalize the signs advertising the heated, indoor pool that the apartment manager stills sees fit to display, I want to hear your stories of suck. Why focus on the positive when you can commiserate with those who have it even worse, right? Rant away ...

Believe me, I've been searching for a video of this since I saw it on "How I Met Your Mother" last week. Here it is. Finally! There is no awesomeness that can compare to NPH gettin' his Cobra Kai on. Well, except this.

Back when he was beefing with LL Cool J, Canibus spit a rap line that made me shake my head: "Cuz the greatest rapper of all time died on March 9th."

He was speaking, of course, about Notorious B.I.G., and anointing Biggie Smalls as the best rap ever as a way to slight LL, who considers himself the G.O.A.T. (Greatest of All Time).

Over time, Canibus' claim is something that a large percentage of hip-hop fans have grown to believe. Well, except 2Pac fans. I'm sure earning a biopic helped cement Biggie's "greatest" status.

So here we are -- March 9. Because of that Canibus line I'll never forgot what day Biggie died. It was 12 years ago today. Currently I'm bumping "Life After Death" (which I still say is a vastly overrated album, it's hardly five-mic worthy) and pondering Biggie's place among hip-hop's elite.

Is Notorious B.I.G. the Greatest Rapper of All Time? I don't think so. He was great, sure. But the greatest? I'll take Rakim, Ice Cube and 2Pac first. I'd also say Jay-Z -- even though he built much of his career on B.I.G.'s death -- ranks higher.

Here's a look back at my weekend. Did you do anything good? Spill it in the comments.

FRIDAY
- All I could muster after a long week that included Rogue Festival and Kids Day was a quick jaunt over to Livingstone's. Quesadilla. Yum.

SATURDAY
- I caught Ryan Paulson's "I'm Uncomfortable," which had a crazy line for a 11:30 a.m. show. The show was hilarious and was a good way to end this year's Rogue for me. I hope he comes back next year with another show. So far he's 2-for-2 in my book.

- The Fresno Home & Garden show was PACKED. Like Christmas-at-the-mall packed. Like testing-your-patience-not-to-scream-at-someone packed. I was pretty ho-hum on the show for the first half of it, but I ended up finding some backyard/landscaping ideas that I dug.

- Caught psychic/clairvoyant Lisa Williams at the Warnors Theatre. I was intrigued for a few reasons: (1) I hadn't been to the Warnors in a while. (2) This was a different type of show for Fresno and I wanted to see what it was like. (3) I'm not sure whether I believe in the whole "I talk to dead people" thing. The show didn't really make up my mind on the last one. Some of the stuff she told people seemed pretty amazing, but then some of it seemed like logical guesses. I do know that I was awestruck by how beautiful that theater is. It was very nice to see it lit up while driving around downtown.

SUNDAY
- Didn't watch "Extreme Makeover: Fresno Edition." Negative 10 Fresno points for me, eh?

One or two of you may have noticed that there was nary a mention of "Lost" last week on the Beehive. Between the Rogueing and the Art Hopping, I wasn't able to sit down and watch Wednesday night's episode -- titled "LaFleur" -- until days later. It may be late, but I'm ready to talk about it now (and I hope you are too).

800px-Whut.jpg

There wasn't a whole lot of "Lost" mythology covered in the episode, so instead of the usual trying-to-figure-out-what-it-all-means business, I just want to gush about Sawyer. Maybe it's my ovaries talking, but I loved seeing the transformation of Sawyer from wise-cracking, fuselage-thieving, Hurley-bashing, Jack-envying con man to absolute romantic hero.

Last year, when trailers for the sixth Harry Potter movie were being released, it was difficult for me to get really excited. After all, the release date of the film had been pushed from November 2008 to July 2009, and that seemed so far away.

Now that July is within sight, however, I am able to say that the following trailer has gotten me pretty excited for the movie. I'm going to have to go back and revisit the others, but I think I can say that this is my favorite of the trailers that have been released (Sorry, Felicia -- still no Severus Snape in sight).

[Disclosure: Travis Sheridan has eaten tacos with me and been to my house. I suppose you could call us friends. I promise I'm being fair.]

Maybe "Bipolarity of Life" isn't the best name for Travis Sheridan's one-man Rogue show. After all, he tells us upfront that he's not bipolar.

The show looks at what he's determined to be the three Ps of his life -- prejudice, poverty and puberty. And it's told in a way that is part stand-up comedy, part therapy session, part magic. Furthermore, the show is a big emotional journey. And what it might evoke in the audience is not limited to two things.

There's no escaping the onslaught of lousy economic news, but here's what else caught my eyes and ears in recent days:

  • Twitter is all the rage these days, from teens to politicians. But this MSNBC columnist is having none of it and calls it the "the Snuggie of social networking."
  • I wonder how Octu-Mom is going to have time to care for 14 kids when she's so busy with her daily video diary on radaroline.com and other interviews. What's a mother to do?
  • "Sleepless in Seattle" as a musical? As much as I enjoyed the 1993 Tom Hanks/Meg Ryan movie, I don't see how a stage shows works when the two protagonists really don't meet and talk until the end of the story.
  • The cast of "Seinfeld" will reunite for a guest appearance on "Curb Your Enthusiasm" this fall. It's all so, you know, yada yada yada.
  • Finally, M.I.A. (seen here) has reportedly named her baby boy ... Ickett. That's right. Ickett. As in stick it. And you know what the kids in school are going to call him: Icky. Why do celebrities burden their kids with these weird names?

A few days ago I publicly pondered the mystery of the People Next Door Theatre Company's "Chronicles of Death," a Rogue show that was hard to get much information about. (All you really find out from the program is that it includes "bad language, suicide and even some nudity.") Well, I trooped out Wednesday night to see it. Mystery solved.

"Chronicles of Death" is an original play. The People Next Door Theatre Company is local. The main character is a blustery guy in a leather trenchcoat and thick black eye makeup named Grim D. Reaper. The format is vignette-style: We get to see a typical day in the life of Death.

Normally stuff I read on Perez Hilton is not my blogging turf, but this is too good. It appears that the marriage vows of Jon and Kate of "Jon and Kate Plus 8" might be in a little danger. According to Perez:

In Touch Weekly is reporting that Jon is spending increasing amounts of time in Huntingdon, Pa., near where his mom lives, three hours away from the home he shares with Kate and their eight children.

And, on February 6th, Jon showed up to a Juniata College house party.

I have two words: about time! Some people might be like "Dang, Mike Oz, that's cold. There's a bunch of kids involved." Well Kate is a world-class b + itch. Those kids are going to be screwed up from Kate being their mom whether or not she's married to Jon.

You know how Jon and Kate recently renewed their vows and the commercial about it ran every 15 minutes on TLC? Well, every time I saw it, I was like "No, Jon, don't do it! It's not a good idea." True story. It's about time homeboy started to realize his wife is nutzo.

A little reader involvement: Give us your best re-naming of the show? A Twitter friend said "(john and kate + 8) / 2." Top it!

In the latest twist to try to liven up "American Idol" this season, the judges Thursday decided to pick four wild card finalists, making the quest for the Top 12 into a field of 13. That meant pulling a fast one on Anoop Desai, who thought he had just missed out. I thought the poor guy was going to faint.

I was surprised that drama queen Tatiana Del Toro (here having another "look at me, look at me" moment with host Ryan Seacrest) didn't drop in a heap. She's out, partly due to her own insistence on again singing the same Whitney Houston song, "Saving All My Love For You," when it didn't get her into the Top 12 the first time. That's either sheer hubris or delusion.

I don't even know why they brought her back as a wild card contestant. She's in tears more than crybaby Jason "The Jerk Bachelor" Mesnick. She is all flutters and chatter and forever on the brink of a collapse. The judges probably woke up and realized: "We cannot have this woman sucking all the air out of the show every week. It's just not fair to the other contestants."

The other three lucky wild card picks are Jasmine Murray, Megan Joy Corkrey and Matt Giraud. Here's your entire list of the 13 finalists.

Finally, the games begin for real next week.

You may have already heard the tale of Latreasa Goodman. The 27-year-old Florida woman -- upset that she paid for McDonald's Chicken McNuggets but then found out the fast-food joint had run out of them -- called 9-1-1. That's right, the emergency phone line that people normally dial when there's serious crime going on. Like robberies and assaults and attempted murders.

Goodman now says she's embarrassed about the whole thing. But you can still hear the 9-1-1 call for yourself by reading this ABC News story and clicking on the audio segment.

See, Latreasa didn't call just once. She called three times to get justice. Instead, the cops cited her with misusing the 9-1-1 system.

I had no idea that 10 pieces of Chicken McNuggets were so in demand. I guess Latreasa should have gone to Burger King, where the slogan is: "Have it your way."

The backlash against "The Bachelor" Jason Mesnick rages on. The latest: Melissa Rycroft, who Jason unceremoniously embarrassed on national TV, is letting him have it on the Ellen Degeneres talk show.

Basically, Melissa (seen here) says that she knew the relationship was over ... but didn't know that Jason still had the hots for the other finalist, Molly Malaney. What's more, Melissa says she had a feeling something was going on between Jason and Molly but that he kept denying it.

You can say that these women get what they deserve by trying to find love on a reality show. But Jason is still a big, stupid jerk. The crybaby even tried to claim he was contractually obligated to split with Melissa on the "After the Rose" show. Host Chris Harrison denies that's the case.

It's Thursday and there's still plenty of Rogue to experience. Changes do get made at a festival like this, so it's best to verify the performance grid at the back of the program. Let's recap the updates, which can be found at the Rogue Festival site:

  • The Rogue Map listings for Dianna's North on Friday 2/27 -- "Dream of Scheherazade," "That 80s Show" and "Spider Baby The Musical" -- are actually performing this Friday.

  • "Cupid is a B*tch" has added a performance time -- tonight at 5:30 p.m. (Wow, that's early.)

  • Baba Brinkman's show "The Rap Guide to Evolution" has added a performance at Dianna's South Saturday 3/7 at 4 p.m.

March 5, 2009 11:34 AM

UPDATE: At the suggestion of Dianna's South co-manager, Kate McKnight, I attended another show at the venue last night, and found it to be quite comfortable. The A/C was working nicely, and it helped that the show wasn't sold out (sorry, Cupid), so I could relax a little in my seat.

While I agree with Roguemaster Marcel Nunis, who says on his blog that "As a potential audience member I can let things slide during a tech rehearsal... not a performance I paid to see. From a festival standpoint this reflects poorly with performers and audiences alike," I definitely do not hold a grudge. Luckily, I was able to go back and see for myself that things were made right.

Dianna's South = back in my good graces, and a venue at which I will happily see more Rogue performances.

Oh, and one more thing. One of the kind people taking the money at last night's show shushed me as I was talking loudly and acting a fool outside the venue, just prior to the show starting. To him I say: Good for you, friend! Clearly I need some Rogue schooling myself, and it's nice to see someone on point in that respect.

Does anyone care?

Do you think Michael Jackson will actually perform? Maybe he saw Britney Spears kick off her comeback tour this week and thought: "Geez, if she can do it, damn, anybody can do it."

Jackson today announced he will perform in 10 concerts scheduled for London in July. He swears these will be the final shows of his career. Tickets are going to cost $70-$150 (um, that's in American dollars and not British pounds, in case anyone plans to fly over there and catch these shows).

But, I'm sorry, I'm really skeptical that he will pull off any or all of these concerts. The guy was more than 90 minutes late to his own news conference to make an announcement that lasted only three minutes. Doesn't he seem frail and, well, just not all that interested?

The part that cracks me up is the sign he had at the dais today. It included "King of Pop," as if that title still mattered to anybody. So why am I blogging this? Because it's so-o-o-o amusing. Hee-hee.

My favorite part of Tony Blanco's Rogue show came when the little girl he'd hauled up on stage for inclusion in his act got a look of wonderment on her face so vivid that I couldn't help but grin. The magician had transformed an ordinary handkerchief into something with handprints on it, or something like that, and the moment so charmed the little girl that she looked like she'd just been granted permission to eat an entire chocolate pie.

Blanco has a nice rapport with kids, no doubt about it. He doesn't treat them too sticky-sweet, but he's also not in any way curt or dismissive with them as he tries to inject a small dose of grown-up humor into the proceedings.

The quote of the Rogue comes from Andrew Corcostegui, who paused midway through his intriguing reading last weekend as part of the "Poetry and Prose from Fresno State" performance at Spectrum Gallery, looked up at the assembled listeners and wryly observed:

"No one's left yet."

There you go, Rogue artists. There's something to aspire to: Perform something that just might make you wonder if you're going to completely freak out and alienate your audience. Isn't that what a fringe festival is all about?

In the case of Corcostegui, the subject matter had to do with, well, bleaching a certain part of one's anatomy that would normally never be exposed to the sun. As part of an assignment to research a topic, the Fresno State MFA student took it upon himself to dive into a subject for which the literary possibilities were rich indeed. (It isn't often that you get to work in the words "high definition anus" into a manuscript.) It turns out that porn stars are among the procedure's most enthusiastic supporters.

Perhaps, for some, the name doesn't immediately ring a bell. But if you're a fan of the 1962 film version of "To Kill a Mockingbird," you will be sad to learn that its screenwriter Horton Foote has died. He was 92.

Foote took a beloved, Pulitzer Prize-winning novel and translated it into the best book-to-film adaption that I've ever seen. He masterfully captured the book's essence: the dignity, wisdom and warmth of Atticus Finch, the wonder of childhood and the searing injustice of prejudice in the deep South South during the Great Depression. The work won him his first of two Academy Awards. He would win the other, 21 years later in 1983, for the Robert Duvall film, "Tender Mercies."

Foote's work, of course, went beyond film. He was a prolific and talented playwright, who won his own Pulitzer for Drama in 1995 for "The Young Man from Atlanta." Here's a piece about Foote posted this afternoon by the New York Times. More stories undoubtedly will pop up through the evening online and in Thursday's newspapers.

We're barely two months or so into 2009, and we've already said good-bye to titan talents such as writer John Updike and artist Andrew Wyeth. And now it's farewell to Foote, a gifted storyteller and chronicler of American life often in the smaller, quieter reaches of the country. Rest in peace, Mr. Foote.

Watch.JPG I meant to write this after I attended the local screening of "Watchmen." But, it is not so much that it was the screening of "Watchmen" that sparked this blog. I could have written the same thing after seeing the recent local screening of "Friday the 13th" or a dozen other R-rated movies.

It is amazing that something can't be done about the blatant child abuse that is going on in this city. It is horrifying when abuse happens behind closed doors. But, this isn't the hidden abuse that is a plague on society. It is almost unimaginable, but this abuse is out in the open. It is flaunted.

That child abuse occurs when children - as young as 4 or 5 - are taken to see a movie that is extremely R rated. "Watchmen" is a movie designed for a mature audience. It has some brutal fight sequences. There is a rape scene that is extremely disturbing. other acts of violence are committed against women. That's not to mention the sex and nudity.

... and I liked it. You know, kids, back in my day, in the mid-part of the first decade of the 21st century, the Tower District got its first Thai restaurant in Million Elephant. The food was amazing, and while the service has always been suspect, at least the first bartender they had was great. Plus you could eat at 3 a.m. There's only one word for that, and it rhymes with awesome.

Then Thaiphoon came along. And before its food quality went to [insert non-favorable word here] and it turned into a poor excuse for a booty club, it was awesome, too. While the panang wasn't as tasty as at Million, Thaiphoon won the pad thai test. And the price was right.

As for Buddha (photo courtesy of Mike Oz), it's too early to tell if I'll get tired of it eventually, as well. I had the Mongolian Beef, which was delicious -- if a bit spicy, but worth it. Steven had the pad thai, which looked and tasted a little frou frou for what I'm looking for in pad thai. But the ingredients in both entrees were certainly fresh. For that alone, I'd recommend checking out Buddha sooner than later.

My only question is why the limited menu? There only are a handful of noodle bowls and a few rice dishes; and the menu is identical for lunch and dinner (save 2 bucks on pricing). The appetizers looked interesting alongside the wine/sake list, but there were no prices listed for them. Maybe they're starting with the standards before easing in other delicacies. If that's the case, it's probably the smarter move. Here's just hoping more options actually are on the way.

I'll definitely be going back to try the appetizers and pound back some sake bombs.

But then again, I also went back to Hero's eventually. (God, I eat out too much.)

UPDATE: As promised, I went back last night with a few buddies after performing in a certain Rogue show. I had two Stellas, an order of egg rolls, spring rolls and lettuce wraps (all in the $5.99 range). The bar was niiice, and very comfortable. The bartender was cool and friendly -- and competent. It wasn't super busy, but I'd have confidence in his abilities on a night when it is. Also, I think it should be classified as more "Asian" than strictly "Thai." And I'm officially a fan ... for now.

One of the new things this year at the Rogue is a formal "Meet the Artists" format in which some of the festival's featured visual artists get a turn in the spotlight. I attended the Saturday afternoon session, which included mini-presentations by Aileen Imperatrice, Edward Stewart and Rattananan K. Moerdyk. (Three more sessions are scheduled, including one at 8:45 p.m. Wednesday).

It was an interesting 45 minutes. I'm not sure if it should be classifed as a "show" or belongs as a scheduled event for a ticket price in a performance festival. Imperatrice shared her decision to go the "pop art" route for the Rogue, including enormous homages to the old-fashioned-style TV dinners. (Remember with the foil on top and the cherry cobbler in the dessert slot?) Stewart explained some of his newest work of specific Fresno locations, including a view of the City Hall and an intriguing burned outline he made of the Fresno Water Tower. Moerdyk, originally from Thailand, offered some insights on her bas relief art -- a style that she developed in part because it's cost effective, always a concern for artists and one that sometimes results in fascinating results -- and shared some of its personal meanings.

He's sorry about a lot of things in this video, which I'll warn you in advance is a viral ploy for a Web site called Right Music Wrongs. Still a funny video -- though Mr. Ice doesn't apologize to Queen and David Bowie, or for making "Cool as Ice."

Oh, and I dare you to get the song out of your head now!

What's the difference between Pieter Moerdyk in "Party Pooper Antichrist" and a homeless guy ranting and raving for money on a street corner? Moerdyk has someone collecting the money for him.

Anybody who has seen a Pieter Moerdyk show in the past knows they're a bit off the wall -- but this "Party Pooper Antichrist" will have you leaving Spectrum Gallery thinking "What the heck was that?"

Moerdyk starts the show in a jester hat and a floor-length house dress, wearing elf shoes and holding an apple. From there, things don't start making any more sense. Even though he brings with him a big piece of cardboard outlining what he's supposed to be talking about.

So Thursday will be a big day in the ongoing legal battle over Proposition 8. The state supreme court is expected to issue an opinion on whether to uphold the November ballot measure that banned same-sex marriage. The secondary issue at play is what will be done with the 18,000 couples who are already legally married.

In the following video, some of them and their families make it clear where they stand on forced divorce:

"Fidelity": Don't Divorce... from Courage Campaign on Vimeo.

I'm not giving an opinion here. But when I came across this video a couple of weeks ago, I found it fascinating to see such an out pour of what can only be described as love -- and the heartbreak that could be in store for these families.

Anyone care to share their thoughts?

Also, there's a scheduled vigil at 6 p.m. tonight outside the Fresno County Clerk's Office, if anyone's interested.

rubenfrenchie.jpgYou get to see a lot of Frenchie Davis in the spirited touring version of "Ain't Misbehavin' " that kicked off a two-night Fresno stand Tuesday at the Saraoyan Theatre.

More of Frenchie, in fact, than I was expecting. A couple of women sitting in the audience behind me gave out little yelps every time that the big-voiced actress engaged in a raucous deep-knee bend or high-leg kick, thus revealing a flash of undergarment from beneath the confines of her knee-length skirt.

To say that Davis belts it out in this musical tribute to Fats Waller is an understatement. It's more like she booms. Her notes are like sassy artillery blasts that detonate with maximum impact on the back walls of the balcony.

The show is a well-sung, enjoyable musical romp with the kind of big performances that give this oft-performed show (now in a 30th anniversary tour) its zing. The five-person ensemble is strong. While some in the audience were undoubtedly enticed to the show by the presence of "American Idol" celebrity Ruben Studdard (pictured above with Davis), this is in no way a star vehicle for him -- just a nice, smooth tribute to Fats.

Not much to shout about regarding the third group of 12 to perform on "American Idol" Tuesday night. Dare I say it? Most of it bordered on tedium and, yes, boredom.

If it weren't for Lil Rounds (seen here), with her spirited rendition of Mary J. Blige's "Be Without You," I could just as well have been watching "The Biggest Loser" on NBC. The judges were far more generous with Scott MacIntyre's performance of "Mandolin Rain" than I would have been. I did like Felicia Barton (she did Alicia Keys' "No Way" ... and, OK, I'm going to root for the gal who's got the same first name as moi) and Ju'not Joyner's mellow, smooth version of "Hey There, Delilah."

The most real part of the night belonged to Jorge Nunez, who sang "Don't Let the Sun Go Down on Me." English is not his first language, but he sang the Elton John tune with conviction and heart. The judge's praise brought him to tears.

But back to Lil Rounds. She was fierce (a word I used to describe LaKisha Jones a lot when she was on the show a couple seasons back) and has soul and, as Randy Jackson said, a swagger to her stage presence. She's definitely one to watch this season.

After tonight's finalists are revealed, that will three slots for wild card picks. This Idolator.com piece tries to explain how that's going to work. Who do you want to see given a second chance at the Final 12?

Every year it seems there's one Rogue show that has a dark, mysterious veneer to it. No one seems to know who's putting it on, the description in the program is vague and the subject matter is murky. Last year I can recall trooping out to a "Bring Your Own Venue" -- a facility called Superior ATM -- out in an industrial park that was hosting a show titled "Brass Ring Presents a Night of Musical Scenes." Hey, it turned out to be bunch of college musical-theater buffs putting on a pretty decent show.

This year, the unknown show for me is "Chronicles of Death" presented by The People Next Door Theatre Company. It plays for the second time 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at Ashtree Studios. The program describes it thus:

Come along on a journey with Death himself. Experience the full spectrum of death. There'll be bad language, suicide and possibly nudity. What's the worst that could happen?

Other than the fact that "Death" in this production opts for both the swanky-personified-metaphor-route as evidenced by the capital "D" and the more reserved, unobtrusive, I'll-just-hang-out-in-the-corner-till-I'm-needed small-d approach, I don't know anything about the show. The myspace page listed in the program (www.myspace.com/thepeoplenextdoortheatreco) seems to be, um, d/Dead. So I'm wondering: Did ANYONE see this show? Or can tell me who's putting it on? Or at least give me a tease? Or should I just expect a pitch from Amway?

Second: What the heck is a divorce show? Is that like a post-Divorce celebration? Or the party that will cause a divorce? Either way, I believe this is the first time I've seen such a thing advertised.

Third: Twilight, huh? Couldn't do any better than naming your stripper company after a movie about teenage vampires. How about this? You guys suck.

HIGH_SCHOOL_MUSICAL_3_SENIOR_YEAR.JPGThere will be a No. 4.

The Disney Channel has just announced work has started on "High School Musical 4." Unlike "High School Musical 3: Senior Year," this next edition will not be a theatrical release. It is scheduled to debut on the Disney Channel in 2010.

No word has been released on casting. That's because many of the stars of the first three movies graduated high school. The best bet is Ashley Tisdale who plays Sharpay Evans. The third film set up a way for her to still be part of the story.

The storyline of the new film will be East meets West. A love triangle is tested by the cross-town school rivalry between the East High Wildcats and West High Knights.

Peter Barsocchini, who wrote all three of the previous "High School Musical" movies, is the screenwriter of "High School Musical 4."

Yes, I've been up since 4 a.m. Yes, I was working a corner for dollar bills this morning. And yes, I then turned all those dollar bills over to Children's Hospital.

With the help of the ladies from NoTown Roller Derby and Bee sports editor Matt Lloyd, The Beehive's Van Ness and Olive corner brought in $369.93. (FYI: Patrick Contreras called in sick.) At last count, the paper-hawkers from The Bee's newsroom as a whole sold more than $1,000 almost $5,000 worth of papers this morning.

Shout out to whoever wrote the $100 check and gave it to Matt. Anti shout-out to the lady in the Jaguar who wouldn't even look at me. Here are some more photos from our Kids Day corner:

tucker.jpgA busy Tuesday in Fresno Theater Land: We've got the opening tonight of the national tour of "Ain't Misbehavin', " otherwise known as "American Idol" meets Fats Waller, at the Saroyan Theatre; and the kick-off of the second week of the August Wilson play "The Piano Lesson" at Fresno State.

Because of my jam-packed schedule and the vagaries of the Spotlight section deadline, I opted to watch a rehearsal of "Piano Lesson" last week so I could write a column about its special guest artist, Tucker Smallwood, pictured above. That meant no official review. (I do hope to get out to see the show again during its run; it plays 8 p.m. Tuesday-Saturday at the John Wright Theatre.) But I'd love to hear from people who have thoughts on the performance. Submit your reviews as a comment on this thread.

As for "Ain't Misbehavin'," I do plan to get out to see opening night at the Saroyan. The production not only features Ruben Studdard, who won the second season of "American Idol," but also his fellow "AI" contestant Frenchie Davis. It plays 7:30 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday. If you'll recall, I had a phone interview with Studdard a few weeks back and asked Beehivers for some help with questions, but I can't say that it went too well. Studdard was rushed and distracted. I'm sure he'll be a lot more focused tonight.

life on mars.jpgIt really looks like "Mars" can't sustain life. The buzz coming out of Hollywood is the quirky ABC series "Life on Mars" will not be back for a second season. That means the show will end after 17 episodes.

For those of you who didn't watch (and obviously that was most of you), the series looks at what happens when a modern New York detective is hit by a car and wakes up in the '70s. The show is based on the British series of the same name. Jason O'Mara plays the time-jumping detective. Harvey Keitel and Michael Imperioli also star.

And for the record, the British series lasted only 16 episodes.

The last episode of "Life on Mars" should air in April.

Once upon a time, Jason Mesnick seemed like he would be a classier "The Bachelor." He's a divorced father of a young son. He understood heartache. He not only had a failed marriage, but "Bachelorette" DeAnna Pappas rejected his proposal last year, breaking his heart. His sincerity and earnest nature landed him this gig.

Well, DeAnna's choice of Jesse Csincsak didn't last, but she's also better off without Jason. Because Jason is a jerk. Let me restate that: Jason is a big, stupid J-E-R-K.

Living up to its hype as "the most dramatic finale" in the show's history, wishy-washy Jason on Monday's climax proposes to Melissa Rycroft (the poor woman shown here) ... and then, on the "After the Final Rose" show, tells the host he's made a mistake and wants to dump her. He's in love with runner-up Molly Malaney.

dinnerbanjo.jpgThe Fresno community theater scene doesn't often get a dose of "big name" syndrome -- the marquee fever that occurs when a well-known actor adds excitement to a cast. (In New York, it seems these days that nearly every Broadway show tries to snag a TV or film star to boost attendance.) For me, at least, that was my feeling opening night at "The Man Who Came to Dinner," directed by Nancy Miller, at the 2nd Space Theatre.

The man of the hour is Brad Myers, longtime Fresno State theater prof, accomplished director and a professional actor who has done most of his acting gigs outside the area. Now, courtesy of Actors' Equity Assocation, to which Myers belongs, the audience gets to experience his wry, commanding stage presence in this Good Company Players production. Supported by a large and well-directed ensemble cast, Myers helps make this classic Moss Hart/George S. Kaufman comedy -- which has some interesting things to say about fame and celebrity -- a pleasant theatrical diversion.

madonna-jesus-luz-winter.jpg

50-year old Madonna is rebounding from her failed marriage to Guy Ritchie with a 22-year old Brazilian model named Jesus Luz. Madonna of course invented the older woman/younger man thing, so none of this is shocking, but what I'm wondering is: at her age, does it reek of desperation?

I say yes. Though I don't think there's anything wrong with dating a younger man, the age difference here -- 28 years for those who can't do the math -- is ridiculous. Jesus is a mere ten years older than Madonna's daughter, Lourdes.

And the old standby argument, "Well, men have been doing this for years" holds no water with me. A 50-year old man dating a 22-year old girl looks like a desperate idiot, too (James Woods, I'm looking right at you).

Madonna is clearly trying to prove to somebody that she still has it. I think this proves that she does not.

But you tell me: Madonna and Jesus. Desperate act of a washed-up old hag or female empowerment to the nth degree?

Kids Day is tomorrow, which means I'm gonna be up so early that I had nightmares last night about waking up tomorrow. If that barely made sense, imagine what kind of sense I'll be making at this time tomorrow -- after a 5-9 a.m. paper-hawking spree.

I've been involved in Kids Day for five years now (skipping last year 'cause I was sick). And I've always wanted to do something a little different to stand out among the thousands of people selling newspapers on various street corners tomorrow. So this year I did some recruiting.

The awesome ladies of NoTown Roller Derby and violin shredder Patrick Contreras will be helping The Beehive earn your dollar bills for Children's Hospital. Meanwhile, Bill McEwen and Jim Boren are setting up at Shaw and Blackstone, and are being joined by Ashley Swearengin and Alan Autry. Personally, I think The Beehive's lineup is better.

I'll be out there, as will our editor Kathy Mahan. Not sure about the rest of the Beehive bunch. I figure we might be able to convince Will, since acting a fool in public is his favorite thing to do. I'm hoping to snag the corner of Van Ness and Olive, right there in the Tower. So look out for us, Tower Rats. Beehive readers are more than welcome to come chill with us too.

Oh, and if you're some rich person who reads The Beehive, come by and buy 100 newspapers please.

IMG_0208.JPGThere were no signs of problems with the economy at this year's WonderCon in San Francisco. Thousands packed the Moscone Center South over the weekend to chat with comic book illustrators, get some early looks at new TV and film projects and spend lots of money.

A few years ago, I decided not to return to ComicCon in San Diego. That summer event has grown to the point it is way to big to enjoy. WonderCon, now in its 23rd year, continues to grow. But, it is still the right size to draw the likes of "Watchmen" actors to talk with fans but not so big you get crushed trying to deal with vendors.

It was certainly productive. Look for interviews in the next few weeks with actors from "Alien Trespass," "Terminator: The Sarah Conner Chronicles," "Chuck," "Wonder Woman," "Adventureland" and "Angel of Death."

I did get the chance to chat with McG, the director of "Terminator Salvation." He says Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger has been approached to make an appearance in the movie. He's not certain if the Governor's people will think being in the movie is a good move.

For those of you who did not make the trek to San Francisco over the weekend, here are a few photographs of the people places and things that could be seen:

nocussing.jpgIf all goes according to plan, the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors tomorrow will proclaim No Cussing Week for the first week in March. This only applies to L.A. County, mind you, so those of us in Fresno and the Valley will still be able to offer a guilt-free unimpeded blue streak. (There are no penalties for an infraction in L.A., of course.) But just think: What about all those drivers stuck in rush-hour traffic? The politicians trying to balance the budget? The porn stars trying to knock out a day's worth of scenes? The "AI" contestants getting booted off the show? The family-values buff finding out that the "Small World" ride is closed that day at Disneyland?

And what about Mickey Rourke?

I'm not a big swearer, so I don't think it'd be hard to go cold turkey. As a journalist, I should disclose a bias when I have one. For the purpose of this review, I must disclose that I'm a heterosexual man. And as such, I'm a little biased toward a burlesque show. How am I not going to be? It's women taking off their clothes!

Now that we have that out of the way we can talk about "Frills & Thrills" -- the Rogue show from the Valley Burlesque Society. After catching Friday night's opening performance, the two words that most come to mind are sexy and fun. The show is seductive and tantalizing, with bits of humor -- just like the pasties and whipped cream -- stuck in the right places.

I'm not uncomfortable recommending that everyone see Ryan Paulson.

Even if some people consider his work blasphemy, and hope he rots in hell, he made me laugh. And I mean laugh. Tears-in-my-eyes laughter.

In "I'm Uncomfortable," Paulson uses stories and songs to talk about being an ex-Pentecostal who moves to New York City in search of sex (including prepping for his first sexual encounter by reading a 3-inch thick book "Guide to Getting It On" -- with diagrams and all).

His story grabs from the start. Strumming his guitar, he sings: "Jesus loves little children, all the children of the world." Well except, maybe, Jews, Muslims and gays, he sings, before repeating the verses in multiple languages and eventually tongues.

It only gets better with bits about repressing his sexual desires as a teen, which leads to the song, "There's No Condom for the Heart," and the story of how, at 21, he finally touched himself and eventually had sex with another person.

"That 80s Show" is darn cute. It's not going to be the best acted, best danced or best produced show you'll see, but it's fun and will make you laugh. The 80s references are funny, the music is authentic (though not year specific) and the kids, LIKE, really, LIKE, pull off the 80s speak -- tubular dude!

Put on by The 2nd Street Dancer's, essentially kids from The Dancing School of Selma, the show combines acting and dancing to tell the story of Alice, who on her 16th birthday makes fun of her stuck-in-the 80s mother and somehow ends up transported back to 1988 (the perfect avenue for a Back to the Future reference) and has to win a weird mishmash of a game show to get back to 2009.

The show goes from 2009 teens dissing Prince and the Go-Go's ("They need to go, go away," Alice utters at one point), to re-enacting classic 80s moments (Anyone remember a girl named Jenny whose phone number is ... you got it: 8675309).

OK, people. You have one more chance to catch the fabulous "Blake and Baba Show" before Rogue ends next weekend. (See details at the end of this post.) Yes, it's modern dance. But the Baba dance troupe knows how to have fun and -- when you pair these Rogue favorites and their original choreography for the first time with original music by Rogue fave Blake Jones -- you have an irresistible show.

The dancers use portable lights, flashlights, exercise balls and other objects in cohesive pieces that abound with energy, attitude and flow. Their movements can be jutting knees and elbows one moment, then sweeping arms and curving bodies the next. They use almost every inch of floor for pieces that can be playful, humorous or life-affirming. And their faces exude the joy that they feel. Their mood is just plain infectious.

I can't recommend "Floradora" -- the charming duo musical by Debi Ruud and Karen Marguth -- highly enough.

Ruud and Marguth are two of Fresno's best female vocalists and are both veteran Rogue performers. They usually headline competing jazz shows at mainstage venues. But this year they decided to combine their talents for a cafe show that uses jazz favorites to tell the story two sisters -- and it's just delightful.

Artists' Repertory Theatre has done it again with "All in the Timing Too": This sterling company has produced a Rogue show that is funny, smart, crisp and charming. When ART did its first installment of "All in the Timing" at last year's Rogue, I thought it was a near-perfect show for this kind of festival. I'm only even more convinced of that statement after watching this year's version.

Playwright David Ives wrote a number of absorbing one-act plays in various collections, which is the source material for ART's "Timing" shows. In this production, three separate titles are presented.

With its provocative title and hip horror theme, "Spider Baby the Musical" might lure you into its web. I wouldn't advise it. Practice every evasive measure you can to avoid getting stuck in this 60 minutes of ill-conceived, lackluster musical theater.

Based on a cult classic film about a family with a horrific hereditary disease that slowly rots their brains, "Spider Baby" -- based on a 1968 film -- joins a long list of musicals inspired by horror-gothic themes. ("Rocky Horror" and "Bat Boy the Musical" immediately come to mind.) I want to make perfectly clear that my objections to this production do not rest with the subject matter. I'm a fierce proponent of weird, small musicals, and basing one on a plot that focuses on mental disease and cannibalism is just fine by me. The issue here is that "Spider Baby's" book is seriously lacking. (The music and lyrics do show a hint of promise.) The direction is weak and tedious. And the acting, with a few exceptions, does not reach the level you'd expect from experienced amateurs.

This production has to be one Rogue's more eclectic, avant-garde shows. It uses experimental dance, Double Dutch jump ropes, a featured singer/guitarist, other musicians, video and props that include a bed. "The Acoustic Kinetic Collective Show" seeks to push and pull time through the senses.

This may not be everyone's cup of tea. You'll definitely have to let go of your preconceived notions of entertainment if modern performance art isn't your usual thing. You can use one of Monty Python's Flying Circus' titles as a guide post: "And Now for Something Completely Different."

Let me first say that Gemma Wilcox, here in Fresno for her first Rogue Festival by way of the United Kingdom, is an incredibly gifted performer. To watch her transform, metamorphosize and shift through about 20 female and male characters (including a delectably arrogant cat, other creatures and other types of objects) is a beauty of a solo acting challenge in "The Honeymoon Period is Officially Over."

Wilcox also wrote this humorous and dramatic one-woman show.
