taylor.jpgRemember when it looked like Brad Paisley was going to play the Save Mart Center, then all of the sudden the show was at Tachi Palace?

Well, when the show moved out to Lemoore, it changed from a big packaged tour with Jack Ingram, Taylor Swift and Kellie Pickler to a Paisley-only show. But now that tickets for the Paisley concert have sold out, another concert has been announced for the same day, in Fresno, with his tourmates.

Confusing? Well, it's like this: Paisley is performing June 28 at Tachi Palace. That's sold out. And now tickets are going to sale to see Ingram and Swift perform at Warnors Theatre the same night. Tickets for that show go on sale at 10 a.m. Friday and cost $9.37-$29.37. Go to Warnors.com for more ticket info.

And Pickler? I'm not 100% sure, but I hear she's playing in Lemoore with Paisley.

chrisbrown.JPGUPDATE: This is now official. Tickets go on sale at 10 a.m. Saturday, cost $29.50-$70.50 and will be available through Ticketmaster. Paula DeAnda and Mario have been confirmed as openers.

Rumor has it Huey and Shop Boyz may also be added to the show. You can hear Brown's new single "Wall to Wall" at his MySpace.

From 4/30:

It looks like the young R & B singer and dancer should return to Fresno this summer for a show at the Save Mart Center on July 12. That's what I'm hearing anyway. That's a big step up from the stage at the Big Fresno Fair, where Brown played a sold-out show last October.

A couple weeks ago, before the band's big Fresno send-off, I wrote about Blake Jones & the Trike Shop's trip to Liverpool for a couple dates at the The International Pop Overthrow Festival. Those shows were this week, wrapping up tonight actually. Here's an e-mail interview I did with Jones talking about their Liverpool trip. Check back at The Beehive soon for an update on the group's trek.

How did this Liverpool trip come to be?
We've played this festival called The International Pop Overthrow Festival (IPO for short) for several years now. They have several editions of this fest around the U.S. We've been playing the San Francisco and Los Angeles ones ... well, because they were within driving distance. When they established the festival in Liverpool I guess it was only a matter of time until someone in the band suggested it; and they did. Then we all kind of looked at each other with that...."I'm in, how 'bout you?"-look and then went rushing off to find our credit cards.

If you're not sufficiently worried about what having a bats**t crazy mother can do to a child, I give you the following frightening example.

Lindsay Lohan used to be a sweet, little innocent baby, too, at one time. Clearly her mother was more concerned with trying to secure that permanent role as "Call girl #1" on "Dynasty" than taking care of the poor child's needs.

men_who_cook.gifWe'll start at the beginning: A couple weeks ago I got asked to participate in this year's Men Who Cook event/fund-raiser at the Fresno Art Museum.

Since I'm essentially an appearance whore -- seriously, I'd speak at a pre-school graduation if they asked me -- I said yes. I don't really cook. I make a few different things. Nothing spectacular. But whatever.

I had to pick my dish on the spot, so I went with chicken tacos. I think my tacos are good, but I probably just wanted tacos at the time (I want tacos 75% of the time) and it sounded like a good idea.

Looking back, I should have picked chicken wings, because those would have been easier. But most people know me as a taco lover, so tacos are a logical choice.

arcadia.jpgThere's a moment in Artists' Repertory Theatre's compelling production of "Arcadia" when the brisk and precocious Thomasina Coverly (played by the vibrant Lisi Drioane), a blue-blood 19th century English lass who may be a mathematical genius, reminisces about the Great Library of Alexandria. This famed institution housed thousands of irreplacable books from the classical era that were lost forever when it burned to the ground.

To think of all that human knowledge and insight going up in flames tears at Thomasina'a heart. "Can you sleep for grief?" she asks her tutor, Septimus Hodge (played by a fine M. Justin Red).

"Arcadia," a whopper of a work by Tom Stoppard, is a play about many things: philosophy, fractal geometry, lust, possible murder, landscape architecture, entropy, petty jealousies, determinism vs. free will, the clash between romanticism and science, the nature of time.

But most important, it's about the human impulse to live, love and make a difference. (The play continues through Sunday.)

creativefresno.pngThe City of Fresno has reached out to Mindhub, Creative Fresno and FLYP seeking input for the Fresno 2025 General Plan. In turn, the three groups of Fresno creatives are reaching out to the public. They've put together a mixer and meeting tonight at Full Circle Brewing Co. to discuss Fresno's future.

Below is a rundown of the event, snagged from Suzanne Bertz-Rosa's Mindhub post.

Will you be going? What ideas do you have for the future of Fresno?

Last-minute reminder for dance fans in the Valley: The Lively Arts Foundation brings the touring show "Forever Tango" to the Saroyan for one performance tonight. Check out my advance article in last Friday's issue of 7. This Broadway production (just dancing, no narrative) recently played a four-week run in San Francisco. Everyone knows how red-hot tango can be, and from what I've read already about the show, this one promises a lot of sizzle.

salma2_0.jpgLook, I like Salma Hayek. I do.

So it is only out of admiration and concern that I feel the need to point out that she has grown really, really huge since being impregnated. Is this normal? I've never been pregnant, but I have seen pregnant people before, and this doesn't look right. From what I've discerned from television and from movies, women are supposed to get cute little bumps that poke out like volleyballs. Their breasts get bigger, but only in proportion to what's happening with the belly.

Salma, on the other hand, has grown three bellies. She's starting to look one of those atom models you make out of styrofoam in 8th grade science class.

What is she, like, 4 or 5 months pregnant? So, this isn't even the worst of it. This woman is going to burst someday soon, and I'm fairly certain she's going to take most of the West Coast with her.

Yes, more "Pirate" blather, but this time I'm back with an important tip. I was remiss last week. I forgot to encourage people to stay through to the VERY end of the film -- all the way past the credits for second assistant caterer and the apprentice CGI grunt who animated Johnny Depp Clone Number 15 -- for a sweet little scene. It isn't a blooper reel -- it's more like a plot clarifier. Anyway, I figured that everyone in the country would already have heard about it through the grapevine and that I didn't need to throw in a mention in my review, but I was talking to someone today who saw the movie this weekend who bolted out the minute the credits started. (Not that I find that a surprise or anything. But, if you've hit the three-hour mark already, what's another couple of minutes?)

Tuesday update: I don't know about you, but I DIDN'T see the latest "Pirates" movie this weekend. What, you say, you did? Well, when I was relaxing in a blissfully Johnny Depp-free zone, you were absorbing 168 minutes of bloated-sequel overkill. Here are some additions to my list of reader comments to my review of "Pirates of the Caribbean." Wendy says:

I strongly disagree with you. There are quite a few people who disagree with you. I loved the movie. I so strongly disagree with you that I had to call and tell you how wonderful I thought the movie was. I've already seen it two times, and I can't wait to go back a third time. You must not be a fan of the movie.

I think Wendy disagrees with me, eh?

alyson-hanniganmalibu-05.jpgI just finished watching Season 5 of "Angel" on DVD, so I'm feeling particularly sensitive about this photo that popped up on the web site In Case You Didn't Know.

First of all, the photo is labeled "Alyson Hannigan and hubby in Malibu." And hubby? It's Alexis Denisof, who spent a year on "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" and 4-and-a-half years on "Angel" playing failed-watcher-turned-rogue-demon-hunter-turned-total-badass-with-nothing-left-to-lose Wesley Wyndam-Pryce. Show some respect.

But that's not what's really bothering me about this photo. Willow's hair and her stupid, hexagonal sunglasses aren't what bother me, either. What bothers me is what's happening south of Alexis Denisof's hem.

Mandals, Wesley? Really? Even Watcher Wesley wouldn't wear this kind of nonsense. You look like you took a wrong turn off the Lido deck and ended up in a Malibu parking lot. Angel would hit you in your face just on principle if you'd shown up at Wolfram and Hart sporting this mess. Come on! You survived having your throat slit and getting shot in the gut. Be a man!

fiddler.jpgThe Anatevka Chamber of Commerce no doubt has listings for a variety of occupations: blacksmith, milkman, tailor, rabbi, constable. But here's one you won't find:

Chiropractor.

Dan Pessano plays the iconic role of Tevye in the new Good Company Players production of "Fiddler on the Roof" like a man with an aching back. Literally. This is no liquid-limbed town patriarch eager to dance a jolly jig on a moment's notice. Rather than a buoyant, good-natured, effervescent good citizen -- a Tevye characterization I've seen played in the past, sort of a combination between Santa and an ever-friendly reference librarian -- Pessano's memorable interpretation of the role paints him a more pained, reflective mode. (At times, during his on-again, off-again conversation with God, he sounds more like an Upper East Side deli owner grousing about a midtown Manhattan traffic jam than a Russian peasant trying to marry off five daughters.)

LLohanCollapse052807_2.jpgLindsay Lohan took the decidedly non-pious/Paris route this weekend after her arrest Saturday morning for drunk driving. Instead of wisely laying low, Little Miss Death Wish was out partying again, and photographers even managed to snap her collapsing and then passing out in the passenger seat of a friend's car. This caps off a funfilled weekend for Lindsay, which USmagazine has documented in impressive detail here.

Enough feeling sorry for Lindsay. Let me know when the funeral is so I can pay my respects.

***UPDATE*** Lohan has entered the Promises rehab facility, her second stint in rehab this year. If you'll recall, Promises is the same spahab facility that worked wonders for a certain not-so-sober Britney Spears. Good luck to Lindsay.

remember-memorial-day.jpgLet me guess - you're at home right now, getting ready to head out to the beach/lake/swimming pool for some Memorial Day festivities, and you're freaking out about having to put on a bathing suit, aren't you?

I have red hair, freckles and pale skin, which means I live like a vampire - inside during daylight hours, blinds closed. The odds of finding me in a bikini are about the same as finding Lindsay Lohan sober.

But if there was the slightest chance I was going anywhere today that would require anything less than long denim jeans, I'd be out of my mind right about now. The only thing that might help? Seeing this picture of Victoria's Secret model Karolina Kurkova sporting some short shorts and the distinct ripple of cellulite on her thighs. She's not as bad as Sharon Stone or Britney Spears, but it's there.

So there you go. Go ahead and have that second hot dog this afternoon, and proudly wear that bikini all over Millerton Lake. Happy Memorial Day!

llohan0525072car.jpgLindsay Lohan, who proudly proclaimed this week that her upcoming 21st birthday party will be sponsored by Svedka vodka, was cited Saturday morning for suspicion of driving under the influence when her Mercedes crashed into a curb. Lohan was admitted to the hospital with minor injuries.

This is the same Lindsay Lohan who was admitted to rehab in January, who was spotted drinking vodka out of water bottles in March, who is being sued by a photographer she hit with her car after leaving a club in March, who was taped doing blow in a bathroom stall, and who recently said that she "felt safe" in rehab, though she's not an addict.

I can't wait to hear how Lindsay's crazy mother/manager, Dina, spins this story. Although I fault Lindsay for her own lifestyle, I still can't help but feel that had she had proper parents - i.e. a mother who wouldn't dismiss a videotape showing her daughter using cocaine with "You can't let it bother you" - she may have had a chance to be a truly great actress. Seriously. Watch Mean Girls or Freaky Friday. The girl is good.

Too bad she'll be dead within a year.

***UPDATE*** TMZ is reporting that a "usable amount" of cocaine was found at the scene of the accident, and that officers "tracked Ms. Lohan to the local hospital, where she was ultimately placed under arrest for investigation of misdemeanor driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs." It is believed Lohan was speeding and lost control of her car. She suffered injuries to her upper chest area.

fiddler%20dan%20pessanoWell, they sure don't include "Pirates of the Caribbean 3." Not everyone agrees with me, of course: I'll share some of the bad reviews from readers for my "Pirates" review a little later. Until then, some picks for the Memorial Day holiday weekend:

1. It's a Tradition. It's opening weekend for Good Company Players' "Fiddler on the Roof" at Roger Rocka's Dinner Theater. As the run for this always popular show progresses, it will likely get harder and harder to get a ticket, so this might be the weekend to slip it in. This crowd-pleaser is a great way to entertain out-of-town relatives, especially if they're of the more, um, traditional theater bent. (The plaintive song "Sunrise, Sunset" will get 'em every time, and "If I Were a Rich Man" will have you humming on the way out of the theater.) And how can you not love the famous "Dream" sequence featuring Grandma Tzeitel and Fruma-Sarah? Dan Pessano stars as Tevye in a big, lovingly crafted production directed by Denise Graziani.

toilet_paper_lock_baby.jpgThis topic is a bit unseemly, so if you have delicate sensibilities, I suggest you go find something a lot more pleasant to read.

I have gnats. At least, my apartment does. They've started to set up shop in my kitchen and bathroom, and there is a giant colony of them - hundreds and hundreds - that has created little nests outside my front door.

Today the exterminator came to deal with my gnat problem. When I came home for lunch I immediately smelled the foul odor of bug spray, and I found a card from the extermination company on my kitchen counter. That's not all I found.

What's one of the first lessons you learn as a child? If you're gonna sneak some cookies, you hide the crumbs, right? Well, if you're an exterminator, and you're in my apartment, and you have to heed the call of nature, you make damn sure I don't find out. You don't leave a smoking gun at the scene of the crime.

pirates.JPGI don't care what Donald Munro says "Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End." This has got to be one of the most beautifully shot motion pictures of all time. Keira Knightley looks absolutely gorgeous.

Hell, even Geoffrey Rush looks good.

I fell asleep during the second one, so I'm not holding out much hope for the quality, but, damn, I've never seen such an attractive-looking film. I give it an A for presentation.

Speaking of looking good onscreen and A-list presentations, I gotta give it up to my boy Donald for his one-minute review of this piece of barnacle bile.

24JPGYou wouldn't know it because of all the attention the finale of "American Idol" got, but several other shows reached their season finale over the past week. And none of them waited until the last second, after wasting two hours, to show something of importance. Curse you Fox.

Season finales are a mixed blessing. It is nice to be able to see the end of a storyline. At the same time it means that new episodes won't be seen for months. Curse you Fox for making us wait until January for the next Jack Bauer story on "24.

Here's a recap of some of the season (and series) finales that didn't get as much attention as "American Idol."

p1_jordan12.jpg"American Idol" is over now. And not a second too soon, judging by my faux pas this afternoon: I was on YouTube, looking for the ultimate in swag -- when Michael Jordan dunked over Dikembe Mutombo, then waved his finger at him.

Except for when I tried to search for this, I typed in Michael Jordin. Yes, -in. As in Jordin Sparks. How could this be? Had four months of "Idol" really taken that much of a toll on me? Am I that programmed? That I mistake the last name of the greatest basketball player of all time with the youngest "American Idol" winner ever?

Somebody punch me in the face.

bushmonkey.jpgOK, I sort of promised yesterday -- or at least implied -- that I'd be spouting no more "American Idol" gibberish, at least until next January, when we can only hope that Simon Cowell has upgraded his weekly wardrobe to collared shirts. But, after last night's finale, I can't help but grousing about a couple of things:

The so-called "awards" given during the show to several of the early-round screechers, misfits and generally unattractive contestants weren't just tacky -- they were offensive. I have mixed feelings in general about the "Idol" practice of allowing not-so-talented people through the gates just so the judges can mock them (and provide footage for the inevitable "Worst of Idol" DVD special). But dragging them onto national television and doing an awards-podium thing -- on the same stage that the Oscars are given, no less -- is sad. The nadir of the show came when a clip showed Simon Cowell comparing contestant Kenneth Briggs to a "bush baby." (Check out the contestant recap on TVsquad.com.) What is this, a talent contest or a 19th century throwback to a traveling freak show? All for a chance to mock fat, ugly people? Way tacky.

An ad for Doc Martens boots has come out in the U.K. featuring Kurt Cobain in angelic dress, sitting on a cloud, wearing a pair of the heavy, black boots, with the tagline "Air Wair Dr. Martens Forever."

martens4.preview.jpg

Kurt's widow, Courtney Love, claims that she did not give permission for Cobain's likeness to be used in the ads, saying through her rep: "It's outrageous that a company is allowed to commercially gain from such a despicable use of her husband's picture."

Love received a lot of flack when she sold her share of Nirvana's publishing catalog in 2006, opening it up for use in commercials. In early May, Love announced she would be selling most of Cobain's old belongings in a Christie's auction.

A cynical person might think Love is angry simply because she's not gaining from the ad (which is not running in the U.S.). But an even more cynical person (me! me!) thinks that if Kurt Cobain was alive today, we'd already be hearing Nirvana songs in Disney movies, buying "Smells Like Teen Spirit" body spray and watching Cobain mentor the morons on "American Idol."

***UPDATE*** The CEO of Dr. Martens has apologized for the Kurt ad, as well as ads featuring Sid Vicious and Joey Ramone, and has fired the ad company responsible for the images.

The big voice overwhelmed the beatbox Wednesday night as Jordin Sparks was crowned the newest and youngest "American Idol."

Sparks, 17, of Glendale, Ariz., prevailed over Blake Lewis, 25, of Bothell, Wash., after a triumphant performance Tuesday that wowed the show's judges and the viewers who gave her a majority of the record 74 million votes cast.

"Mom, Dad, I love you," Sparks, the daughter of retired NFL player Phillippi Sparks, said tearfully after a bearhug from Lewis.

I always forget to bring paper, so I am unable to take notes. Years of killing off brain cells with vodka and "Saved By the Bell" reruns have dulled my brain into a state of lethargy. What was the playlist? I don't know. What was the crowd like? Beats me. Did you have good seats? Can't remember.

Armed with this knowledge, I invite you to take a journey into the mind of a moron, as I try to break down last night's Harry Connick, Jr. concert for you in my own special way. Without pictures. Or, you know - pertinent details.

You may find this hard to believe, but I actually do have a soul and - even more importantly - a conscience. I say this only to try to justify what I am about to show you, which is perhaps the most adorable photo you are going to see all week.

Now, I don't normally approve of pictures taken of celebrities without their consent or, at the very least, their knowledge.

"But Heather, you hypocrite. You seemed to have no problems using that picture of Val Kilmer on the beach, splayed out like a Thanksgiving turkey, or that one of Jessica Simpson doing her impression of a stroke victim."

Yeah, I know. The conscience I have is slow to kick in, and has a spotty track record at best. But, in general, I'm not going to show you pictures of Reese Witherspoon screaming at the paparazzi who are taking pictures of her kids, or anything crazy like that.

That being said, after the jump is a very invasive yet wholly dream-worthy picture someone took with their cellphone of Jake Gyllenhaal asleep on a train. It's Jake! And he's sleeping! This is totally what I've always imagined he looks like after a night of vigorous Yahtzee-playing.

So I like board games. You have your fantasies, and I have mine.

For those following "American Idol," today sort of feels like the culmination of a too-long presidential campaign. Two major realizations: It's all going to be over tonight, and can you believe we've invested so much time and energy getting to this point? At the risk of overloading your already saturated brains with more "Idol" dreck, I wanted to share with you some responses from readers to my Sunday column lamenting the fact that Melinda Doolittle got booted off the show.

Laura Willems took exception to my growling anti-Blakeisms:

I for one am glad that Lakisha did not make it to the final two. No chills for me, SORRY. And what if Blake's voice isn't all power-house-y or always on key. Remember when THAT was the complaint about Madonna? These days it's ALL about collaboration. With Blake's musicality and style, he fits right in with that environment. And Jordin will be fine because she got the whole "package" as it were. I do agree that Idol should be spaced out better. What happened to Taylor Hicks? Didn't he JUST win? At least we know that Sanjya will be replaced soon; unfortunately most likely by a MORE ANNOYING someone else.

Yeah, um, let's have a nationwide singing competition with a finalist who doesn't always sing on key. Now there's a talent show for you.

Donald Munro

blakejordin.JPGAfter last night's performances, DialIdol.com is predicting a win for Jordin. Ms. Sparks is also ahead of Blake in the Bee's poll. But until 8 p.m. tonight (OK, more like 9:55) rolls around, we're left to ponder, critique and debate. So, Fresno, who's it going to be? The Beat Boxer or The Diva?

Felicia says:
Last night's "American Idol" was more like a marathon than a sprint. Didn't Jordin Sparks seem off her game the first two songs? And what's with Blake Lewis winning the coin toss and deciding to go first in the rotation? You never let your opponent get in the last turn on stage to make the final impression. Or maybe he'd already decided he wasn't going to win anyway.

Paula Abdul fell and broke her nose Saturday.

The official explanation is that she fell while trying to avoid stepping on her chihuahua, Tulip, but I'm pretty sure that's publicist code for "Took two Xanax with her martini dinner."

According to her rep, Abdul is fine and that "If you didn't know she broke her nose, you'd never guess anything happened to her," which either says something about the hideous state of Paula's nose pre-fall or that someone in her camp is making a big damn deal about something that was inconsequential to begin with.

How is the dog, you ask? Again, Paula's rep: "Tulip is fine. For dogs, every day is Saturday."

Well said. And you thought Paula was the drunk one. Allegedly.

DSCF1909.JPGJohn Legend was spectacular Monday night at Saroyan Theatre. Plain and simple, he's an amazing singer, performer and artist, one of the best of my generation. I can say that without hesitation.

His live show is joyous, romantic, stirring and awe-striking, all at the same time. Whether he was strutting around stage, drawing shrieks from the women in the crowd or cozying up next his piano and crooning out "Ordinary People" -- the man is impeccable.

I saw him in November in San Francisco and it was one of the better shows I'd seen in recent memory. And I think the Fresno show was better. There was only one problem -- the crowd. I had no problem with the number of couples canoodling in the theater (I was one-half of one of them). The problem, rather, was that the theater wasn't full. There were a few hundred seats left.

Are you kidding me, Fresno? John freakin' Legend comes to town and can't even draw 2,000 people, yet 13,000 of you show up to see the Black Eyed Peas? I don't know if it's because Fresno just had bad taste, or because Legend doesn't get a lot of exposure in our market. (I'm growling at you, radio stations!) It was nice to see the Q97 street team standing outside of the theater, ya know, since they don't play his music.

OK. I'll stop. Below you'll find some (very amateur) pics and vids from the show:

jessjohnmayer2-thumb.jpgJohn Mayer is no longer finding the fun in Jess's funbags.

Here I was, all set to publish this blog post about how my most favorite couple ever, John Mayer and Jessica Simpson, split, when all of a sudden they up and got back together.

Strangely enough, they appeared to make up after Jessica made the announcement that she would be starting her own line of lingerie. Apparently Mayer has no problem watching Jessica sit in a corner playing with a ball of yarn as long as she's wearing something low-cut and low-cut.

Listen, I was willing to look the other way when John Mayer attached himself to old Boobs McGillicuddy herself - or Jennifer Love Hewitt, as her friends probably call her - but this is getting stupid. I guess no matter how cool your new haircut is, if you were a geekboy in high school who couldn't get laid and then you become famous as a sensitive singer-songwriter, you're going to go for the rack every time, even if it's attached to a big ball of dumb.

Interesting sidenote: Mike Oz couldn't score an interview with John Mayer for his upcoming concert at the SaveMart Center and he blames me and my ill blog treatment of Mayer and his woman. I have no clue what Mike's talking about. Where I come from saying someone looks like Edward Scissorhands and calling his girlfriend a "big ball of dumb" is simply tough love.

So I pop up to San Francisco Monday morning to see the new "Pirates of the Caribbean" movie -- alas, Disney decided not to screen the film in Fresno -- and what happened? The hard drive crashed 90 minutes into the movie. Or some such computer mumbo jumbo. We've all been hearing about the imminent arrival of digital movies and how great they'll be in terms of picture and sound quality, cutting down on expenses for studios, etc. All I can say is: Yep, but the computer can crash. The Metreon's tech team tried valiantly to reboot the film for half an hour, and occasionally the now surly press-screening audience would be treated to little flashes of images and sounds from parts of the movie we hadn't yet seen, but in the end, no luck. The end result: I'm stuck here in San Francisco Monday night so I can see the last hour of the movie at a rescheduled screening at noon Tuesday.

How was the first half of the movie? Let's put it this way: I'm arriving an hour and a half late tomorrow for the rescheduled screening so I don't have to sit through the part I already saw again.

At least I saw a full movie before the "Pirates" fiasco: I caught a press screening of the new Ashley Judd movie "Bug," which is one of the trippiest things I've seen in a long time.

Well, in honor of last Tuesday's series finale of one of my absolute favorite shows, as well as tonight's season finale of my new addiction, here's a picture I took of Milo Ventimiglia wearing our fair city on his chest. Of course, this was before he left to go, you know, save the world.

daughtrysolomain.jpgThe Big Fresno Fair has unveiled pieces of its 2007 entertainment lineup and there's one that immediately stands out -- Daughtry. The "American Idol" cast-off turned multi-platinum star, Chris Daughtry and his rock band are scheduled to perform Oct. 4 at the fair's Paul Paul Theatre. Must say, that's a nice grab for the fair.

Also on the early list:
Oct. 3: Casting Crowns | Oct. 7: Ramon Ayala | Oct. 9: The O'Jays
Oct. 11: Weird Al Yankovic | Oct. 12: George Jones |
Oct. 13: Bow Wow | Tickets go on sale in July.

millie2.jpg1. Thoroughly delightful. There are only three performances left of the Good Company Players production of "Thoroughly Modern Millie" at Roger Rocka's Dinner Theater. How much did I like this show? I pretty much raved when I saw it opening weekend. And for the first time in what I think is forever, I saw a Roger Rocka's show TWICE during an eight-week run. Part of the reason was because I was curious to see how a show like this ages -- it is still as fresh two months later? Have the actors grown in their roles -- or gotten stale?

In this case, the show is even brighter and more vibrant. Emily Pessano, as the headstrong Millie, was pitch perfect Thursday night, belting out a performance that is in every measure of the word professional. When she sings the personal anthem "Jimmy," which starts softly and then turns into sort of a battle cry for the character, I was reminded of performances of leading ladies I've seen in national touring performances at the Saroyan -- and in San Francisco and on Broadway as well.

VERONICA%20MARS.JPGI can't say I was surprised to hear the CW Network had canceled "Veronica Mars." It took a lot of support from fans to get it on this year's schedule. It is just sad that shows like "The Search for the Next Pussycat Doll" can survive and quality programs get axed.

Don't get me wrong. I understand the popularity of reality television. It is just that the genre is killing traditional scripted shows. The Fox Network will devote programming on three of seven nights to reality shows in the fall. That's way too much.

Here's a prediction in regards to "Veronica Mars" star Kristen Bell. If she doesn't do something stupid, she is headed for a great career in television and movies.

In today's issue of 7 I talk with Michael Peterson about his new production of Tom Stoppard's "Arcadia" presented by Artists' Repertory Theatre. Here's a continuation of the interview:

What drew you to this play?

I loved the play from the first time I read it. At that time the only Stoppard work which I was familiar with was Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead, which had been produced at the college I attended (Occidental). When I came across a copy of Arcadia upstairs at Theatre3, I read it, and its amazing juxtapostioning of poetry and math fascinated me immediately. Also, the fact that one of the characters is supposed to have attended the same English university (Sussex) where I did a junior year exchange, was personally engaging as well. I urged Gordon Goede to produce the play at Theatre3, but he was never interested in it. Now, since the formation of Artists' Repertory Theatre, I've gotten the exciting opportunity to direct it myself.

shrek3.gifThe print reviews for "Shrek the Third" break Friday morning, but a lot of them on Thursday were bouncing around the Internet . My colleague Rick Bentley does the honors with the official review in tomorrow's Bee, but I can offer a preview of my own reaction: This "Shrek" is dreck.

Actually, I just wanted to use that line before I actually see it in print somewhere else and then feel guilty about plagiarism.

By the way, there's a huge quote running at the top of the "Shrek the Third" print ads that says: "The best Shrek yet!" DO NOT BELIEVE IT. The quote is from Pat Collins of WWOR-TV. Is he/she serious? Under what circumstances did this critic watch the first wonderful film: while stretched out on a rack while little devils poked and prodded bare flesh?

I mean, I could see giving this third film in the trilogy lukewarm praise -- there are some amusing moments -- but the BEST "Shrek"? Ever? It doesn't even come close to the spark and originality of the first. I still remember walking out of the first "Shrek" filled with that giddy feeling you get when you know you've just witnessed something remarkable. The second film was pretty darn good, too. Compared to Nos. 1 and 2, this third installment is so creaky with the dread Hollywood disease of sequelitis that it's a wonder it even manages to churn through to the end.

Back story: So metro reporter Denny Boyles was visiting Pet Extreme in Clovis a month or so back for a story about dog food, in light of that whole contamination issue. Anyway, one of the employees was feeding the store's toucan (Pet Extreme also has a real shark on site), and she told him: "Check this out. He will only eat the red pellets."

Turns out, "Sam," who can be yours for just 5 grand, ignores two-thirds of his food, which also comes in light brown and green. But he likes only the red. Denny comes back to the office and tells me about it. Here's the video report:

Peter Gelb, the new general manager of the Metropolitan Opera in New York, has been working hard to make a splash with a lineup of sexy new singers, non-traditional programming and innovative promotions. Turns out he's making an impact. (Much to the annoyance of his detractors, I'm sure.) Bloomberg reports that ticket sales rose 7.1%:

It was the opera house's first ticket-sale increase by season in six years, with 810,225 sold, compared with 755,255 in 2005-06, Gelb said today in an interview. In all, the Met sold 83.9 percent of tickets offered this season for its 3,800-seat opera house at Manhattan's Lincoln Center, compared with 76.8 percent last year.

One factor in the increase, Gelb said: the Met's new high-definition live broadcasts to movie theaters around the world. (Fresno's Edwards theater drew large crowds for the broadcasts.) OperaSuite.com reports that the Met will increase the number of operas in next season's HD lineup from six to eight.

In fact, the New York Times reports, Gelb says that he "expects the series to make a profit, a word not often heard in the opera world."

sj_blog.jpgJustin Timberlake and Jessica Biel were photographed this week holding hands and -gasp!- kissing while spending some time together in England.

The photos represent a very odd friendship/love clusterf - well, you know - that has been going on since Justin and Cameron Diaz split in January. It was rumored that Justin was seeing his video co-star Scarlett Johansson shortly after (or not) the split. Yet later that month, stories that Jessica Biel had spent time with Justin at the Sundance Film Festival turned up everywhere.

In February, Jessica and Ryan Reynolds (who had just split with Alanis Morisette) were spotted out together a couple of times - giving rise to rumors of a coupling. The following month, supposed rivals Jessica and Scarlett were photographed shopping together in Paris.

23148.jpgFor once, Melinda Doolittle had a reason for that look of shock she wears so well. Melinda -- called by host Ryan Seacrest "once of our best singers ever" -- was sent home , via the opinion of 60 million votes. It leaves Blake Lewis and Jordin Sparks left to vie for the title of "American Idol."

She was the favorite all along, the back-up singer who finally made good, the machine-like vocalist who was the most consistent of this year's "Idol" crop. But many thought Melinda lacked in the charisma department.

Last week, maintenance problems forced the new owners of the pizza joint and makeshift rock venue to announce its closure, leaving young rock bands and fans searching out a new all-ages venue

As news of Pizzaland's closing spread, many shows were re-scheduled for new venues, including Thursday's show with Hoods. That show, like many others, is back on at Pizzaland.

MOONLIGHTThe changes CBS executives have announced for the 2007-2008 television season are both frustrating and exciting.

The frustrating part is that "Jericho" won't be back. Granted, the series lost some steam in the middle. That doesn't mean it is right to end the show without wrapping up all the mysteries. Network officials are always confused as to why viewers won't commit to continuing dramas. This is why. Investments are made. There isn't always a payoff.

On the other hand, CBS deserves praise for taking a gamble on "Viva Laughlin." The new drama is based on the BBC series "Viva Blackpool" where characters often break into song and dance. Don't compare it to the ill-fated "Cop Rock." If this series is half as good as the BBC series, CBS will have a quirky new hit.

Tuesday night's "American Idol" with the remaining 3 contestants was a showcase all right ... It neatly summed up the season: some technical consistency thrown in with youthful verve but no knock-em-out-of-the-park moments. Nothing that makes you stand up and cheer and applaud. Nothing that sincerely touches your emotions (at least not for those of us who don't count any of the remaining 3 as a favorite).

Have you been to Target lately? Notice anything different?

Finally recognizing that the margin of difference between its customers' intelligence and that of Wal-Mart shoppers is slim at best, Target has done away with its old methods of directing traffic in and out of its stores, opting for a simple "In" above the entrance and "Out" above the exit.

picture_tony.jpgFresno's favorite Broadway star certainly has that opportunity. Audra McDonald on Tuesday picked up a Tony nomination for best actress in a musical for "110 in the Shade" at Studio 54. Considering that she's won four Tonys already and isn't yet 40, it'll probably be pretty tough for McDonald to win No. 5. (Christine Ebersole, nominated for an acclaimed performance in the musical "Grey Gardens," is an early favorite to win the category, The New York Times reports.) Others nominated in the category are Laura Bell Bundy for "Legally Blonde the Musical," Debra Monk for "Curtains" and Donna Murphy for "LoveMusik."

Tough category.

But ... Some of Audra's reviews have been superlative for "110 in the Shade," even for her. Ben Brantley of the New York Times gushed so much he almost short-circuited his laptop. And Terry Teachout of the Wall Street Journal called Audra's role "the performance of a lifetime." With notices like that, who knows?

Check out the official Tony Awards site with all the nominees. In the next few days, I'll scope around to try to find the best Tony-prediction blogs so we can keep on top of things. Awards are June 10.

LOSTABC will launch its 2007-2008 fall television season without "Lost." The series won't be on the schedule until later in the year. It was just a couple of years ago that the show was such a powerhouse that it sparked ABC's ratings rebounds.

Sure "Lost" has been wandering this year like an infant on a playground. Even when the show has been at its most befuddled, it is miles better than "Men in Trees." But "Men in Trees" will be back in September.

americanpastime.jpgHere are two very different reactions to my review of "American Pastime," a film that opened Friday about Japanese internment camps. It's a project close to the heart of a local filmmaker, Kerry Yo Nakagawa, who spent five years getting the film made and has an associate producer credit. I wrote: "While historically sensitive and thought-provoking, the story line is scattered and the direction uneven. The film dawdles far too long in its set-up, then relies on a cliche-ridden sports finale." I went on to write that the film's strengths include its production values and several acting performances, but that the film's uneven storytelling meant I couldn't recommend it enthusiastically.

One reader called and expressed the following:

Kerry Yo Nakagawa happens to be a friend of mine, and he's put five years into this movie. I've seen the movie down in Hollywood and I thought it was very well done, and I'm sorry you had to have such a dark view on it. I believe your review didn't do any justice to the movie, and it doesn't help the local artists in our Valley. It doesn't give them any boost whatsoever. I believe you didn't give "American Pastime" its due. You just closed the doors on it.

HEROESThere was a time when the other networks feared NBC. That made sense. The network combined great comedies like "Friends," "Frasier" and "Seinfeld" with top-notch dramas such as "ER" and "The West Wing."

Those days are long gone. And the future doesn't look that bright.

NBC has announced the lineup for its 2007-2008 season. The only shows returning from last year's bad year of launches are the addictive "Heroes" and the critically liked but lowly watched "Friday Night Lights." There are four new dramas and no new comedies.

It looks like NBC is just not trying. Consider the following:

1. Something wicked. There are only two chances left to see Ed EmanuEl's searing production of "Macbeth" at Fresno State: 8 p.m. tonight and Saturday. Check out my review. It's nice to see a university production take chances and have a wickedly strong viewpoint, and even though I don't agree with all of EmanuEl's directorial choices, the play positively seethes because of him.

2. Last-minute Friday movie. Fresno Filmworks has a really fine offering tonight: "La Ultima Mirada," or "The Last Look," a Mexican film that surprises as it floats artistically along. Here's my review. It's the story of an artist whose life becomes intertwined with a woman who works as a maid in a brothel. (You'll spend the whole film trying to figure out how their paths will converge.) A bonus: If you go to the 8 p.m. show, you can see the Tower Theatre with all its fancy new lights when the movie is over.

GA6.JPGGary Allan tossed out more guitar picks than he did words Thursday night at Saroyan Theatre. Really, that might not be an exaggeration.

The country singer -- known as a quiet guy who doesn't do interviews or meet fans -- was even modest in talking about his Oprah appearance that bumped his Fresno show from Tuesday to Thursday. He just told the crowd he was going to be on "a talk show."

But when his band revved up, Allan went to work, proving it's not his talking that makes people love him. It's his songs. He moved around the stage with a stoic intensity for about 90 minutes, pacing out the performance perfectly. He started with some guitar-ripping, crowd-rousers before moving into his heart-wrenching ballads (I think even his eyes were watery when he sang "Best I Ever Had") and finished off the night with his whiskey-drinking, hell-raising songs.

HEAVEN2It is always sad to see a good television show go off the air. But "7th Heaven" stayed a year too long. The show has become more of a youth oriented version of "The Love Boat." In recent years, teen-age actors have been coming and going faster than a crowd at a 7-11 after school lets out.

The strength of "7th Heaven" came from the family that was in place when the show went on the air in August 1996. The problem with a successful family show is that young characters grow up and move on to other lives, or even other television shows.

Picture298-1.jpgSo for Mother's Day this year, I got my mom and my grandma V.I.P. tickets to see Wayne Newton at Table Mountain. Grandma saw Wayne when he was a mere tot working the casinos in Vegas back in the day, so this was a special reunion between the two. She says Wayne doesn't sing as long as he used to, but he's an old man, so she forgives him.

For transportation up to the casino, my brother and I arranged for the gals to catch a ride with a dapper driver named Bryan in a 1961 Jaguar MK IX Limousine, because that's just how we roll. And because we wanted to hear Grandma make little exclamations like, "Oh my! I'm not dressed for this!"

audra-shadex-large.jpgBen Brantley has spoken. (Or written, as it were.) The all-powerful New York Times critic's review of Audra McDonald in "110 in the Shade," her first Broadway musical in years, is alternately wildly enthusiastic about her performance and mildly disparaging of the play. He writes:

She so blurs the lines between spoken and musical expression that one seems like a natural extension of the other. Singing for Ms. McDonald is just a more emphatic and articulate way of talking, one that's needed when emotions are so intense they can't be captured without the texture and shading of melody. When you listen to Ms. McDonald's Lizzie sing about the ache of loneliness or her disgust for the words "old maid," you don't know how she feels; you feel how she feels. You're likely to find tears in your eyes by the end of even comic songs.
You might think that sounds pretty effusive for Brantley, but he is known for waxing rhapsodic about his favorite leading ladies. It's obvious Audra fits into that category, even if he does fault the rest of the play for being "lukewarm."

Reading last week's Entertainment Weekly, I had one of those "Did they just say Fresno?" moments.

Apparently the name of the director who helms the sequel to 28 Days Later (titled 28 Weeks Later - clever!) is Juan Carlos Fresnadillo.

Fresnadillo. And with that, I've got the title for Kevin Federline's inevitable memoir: Fed Up in the Fresnadillo: From Pizzaboy to Guy Who Starred as a Fast Food Worker in a Commercial That One Time, Beeyotch!.

Mike Oz already offered to ghostwrite K-Fed's memoirs, and he'd do a good job, but I think it's pretty clear who's got the mad skills with a title. And - though you wouldn't think it to look at me - mad skills on the basketball court. It's all about HORSE, baby.

Well, when I heard that David Letterman read a classified ad that got published in The Bee, I thought that would be a great blog entry. Then, after calling the number on the ad, I decided Lori Igasan's story about finding a fish would make for an even better video.

After the video published, I got a call from a woman, Bernadette Planting, claiming to have lost a fish in mid-March. She told me her story, and I told her that it sounded too good to be true. Then I asked: "Bernadette, are you and Lori playing a hoax here?" Sounding offended at the question, she answered no.

Instead, I heard from a reader named Rob who picked up on my theme by using my initials:

D is for Dollars and M is for Money, which is what the Hollywood summer blockbusters are all about!

I checked with my colleague, Rick Bentley, who wrote The Bee's review of the film (he gave it a C+), and he's had pretty much the same experience: No vitriolic calls, no rabid fans spouting unpleasantries. The country star, who lost his wife to suicide in 2004 and hadn't talked about it publicity until a recent interview with People Magazine, got an invite to tell his story to Oprah -- but it was the same day as his Fresno date. So the date was moved to Thursday to allow him to fly to Chicago.

I heard rumors of such last week, but his publicist and management wouldn't confirm it. Apparently, Oprah's people like to keep a tight lid on things. But now that it's been shot, people can talk about it. There's no air date for the episode yet. But maybe Gary will talk a little about it tomorrow night. A few tickets are still available.

ai6final4.jpgIt's crunch time. Four wannabes left and only one spot as America's anointed Idol. Who's gonna win the whole thing? If you listen to the judges on Tuesday, there was no clear-cut frontrunner? What what do you say? Who was best? Who was worst? Who will go home on Wednesday night? Leave a comment and let us know.

Now we'll turn it over to Mike and Felicia for their reactions and predictions:

Felicia says:
I've written earlier in this season of "American Idol" that the monster shadow of Sanjaya was masking what has been an essentially weak field ... and Tuesday night's show laid bare those concerns. Is Barry Gibb/Bee Gees' music that challenging? Or is it so blah that there was little the remaining four contestants could do with it? Was Barry Gibb just a lousy coach? Is it too much for each A.I. wannabe to learn 2 songs for a show? All I know is that this might have been the worst episode of the season: It committed the mortal television sin of being boring.

First he found a way to decimate Jessica Simpson's good looks.

Now John Mayer has put into action part 2 of his evil genius plan to destroy Jessica Simpson's career - and get her off the fame radar once and for all - by playing up his own magical features and making her look like a dog in comparison.

Yes, folks. John Mayer finally got a haircut, and he's looking better than ever. I tell you, I'm just about crushing on the diabolical bastard again. Genius, this guy!

VIEWJoy Behar, one of the hosts of the ABC daytime series "The View," recently offered 10 reasons "The View" will win the Emmy this year for "Outstanding Talk Show." Daytime Emmys will be presented June 15.

You have to respect Behar's optimism. But the show has about as much chance of winning the Emmy as Mr. Ed has of winning the Preakness. The show's ratings got a spark from the verbal sparring by two people who should just go away: Rosie O'Donnell and Donald Trump. That doesn't mean it deserves an Emmy.

Here are 10 reasons "The View" won't win the Emmy.

bc.jpgYo! I don't think we know each other. I live across the way from you. I'm the guy whose bedroom window faces yours. Oh, and I'm also the guy you woke up at 7 a.m. this morning with those 15 minutes of blasting gospel music.

The First Amendment guarantees your right to get down with your boy JC, that's all good, but do you have to do it at 7 a.m. at a volume that woke me up and made me think LaKisha Jones was doing "American Idol" warms-ups at the foot of my bed? That's just not neighborly.

(Note to readers: I'm not exaggerating. The music was blaring like it was happening in my room -- not from another apartment across the way. I can only imagine what it sounded like in there. From where I was sleeping, it sounded like somebody was trying to wake up Jesus.)

Yes, it could have been Three 6 Mafia or something. And I'm grateful that it wasn't. But I didn't really want to hear some pious soul piping at 7 a.m. either. Do it again, and I'll make sure it's Three 6 Mafia. At 6 a.m. Try me!

Either Cate Blanchett is playing a gargoyle in her next film, or someone's been skipping tea time again.

Blanchett shocked onlookers when she showed up for the MET Costume Institute Gala looking like a skinny, freaked out version of her normally beautiful self.
cateGOFF0805_468x608.jpg

Some speculate the shocking weight loss has to do with her role as a young Bob Dylan in the upcoming Dylan biopic I'm Not There, but since that filmed last year, I'm going to go ahead and assume it's just your typical actress-doesn't-wanna-eat crap.

Whatever, man. I think she looks fantastic. If you can kill a man with your clavicles, you're a hero in my book.

dont-free-paris.jpgLooks like Paris Hilton found someone to blame for her recent jail sentence. What, you thought she'd take responsibility and be accountable for something for once in her life? Not so much, Captain Gullible.

Hilton's publicist, Elliott Mintz, apparently resigned over the weekend because of his role in Paris' recent troubles. Paris claimed that it was Mintz who told her it was okay to drive on her suspended license.

In a statement to TMZ, Mintz accepted full blame for Hilton's ignorance (well, her ignorance about the suspended license. He couldn't possibly accept full blame for her ignorance in life). Mintz ended his tumultuous, but never dull, reign as Paris' mouthpiece praising his former client: "For the record, I have nothing but love and respect for Paris and her family. Paris is a wonderful person and does not deserve the punishment that was handed down by the court. I only wish her my best."

26911Ty1.jpgYou know how you always thought Ty Pennington from "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition" was on something? Looks like you were right.

Pennington was arrested for suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol Saturday in Los Angeles. He was released on $5,000 bail and has already issued a statement apologizing to his family ABC for his lapse in judgment:

"I made an error in judgment. We all make mistakes; however, this is about accountability. Under no circumstances should anyone consume alcohol while driving. I could have jeopardized the lives of others and I am grateful there was no accident or harm done to anyone. This was my wake-up call. I also want to apologize to my fans, ABC Television and my design team for my lapse in judgment and the embarrassment I have caused.""

Alcohol, hmm? Okay, I'll buy that. For now. But no one who's simply on the juice has the energy to act a fool while putting together a house from scratch in just 7 days. How do I know? Two vodka and cranberries with dinner and I fell asleep halfway through writing this blog post.

divebarhunt.JPGNote: This is the first in an occasional series, where Beehivers Mike Oz and Heather search for the diviest dive bars Fresno has to offer. We start at The Other Bar.

Mike Oz: I realized Saturday night, as the Grizzlies were beating up on the Las Vegas 51s and we were trying to figure out where to go after the game, that I've grown tired of all the bars I usually go to. Livingstone's? Love it, but tired of it. Silver Dollar? Eh. Veni's? Great, especially this time of year, but I want something a little more bar-ish sometimes. Sometimes I want a dive bar.

So I racked my brain, trying to think of a divey joint I've never been to. I remembered The Other Bar, a place cozied up in a Blackstone strip mall that I'd driven past a few times and chuckled at the name. Perfect!

emily%20king.JPGNot Corinne Bailey Rae! Not Robin Thicke! It's Emily King!!! Wait, who the heck is Emily King?

King is a New York-based soul singer/songwriter (ya know, 'cause she plays guitar), who's signed to J Records. She's 21, the daughter of two jazz singers. Her musical influences range from SWV to Nas to Radiohead. Her debut album "East Side Story" is due this summer. And doing a dozen or so dates with Legend seems to be a coup for King, who has also toured with Lyfe Jennings and Ludacris. Check out her MySpace for music and more info on her.

My take: Yes, I would have loved to see Corinne, too, but I figured she wasn't coming, or else we would have heard it by now. The songs on King's MySpace sound pretty good. I like "Colorblind." I'm interested to see what she can do live. What do you guys think?

macbethwitchesDown on one knee, submissive subjects. You're in the presence of the king. He might not wear glorious robes or have central heating. He probably hasn't bathed in a couple of weeks. But King Duncan is powerful. When his thanes show their respect, with heads bowed low and blood-spattered legs scraping the ground, they almost tremble.

In Ed EmanuEl's new production of "Macbeth," which continues Tuesday-Saturday at Fresno State, this all-consuming fealty to the king isn't because of niceties or tradition. It's about survival. In a violent and turbulent time, when lives are short and the social order unsteady, paying respect to the king is less along the lines of high tea at Buckingham Palace and more akin to a frightened dog flopping over and demonstrating submission to the leader of the pack. You need a strong leader or the world crumbles in chaos. In the dark and gritty setting of this excellent production, fear is a driving force.

EmanuEl said before the show opened that this "Macbeth" wouldn't be subtle. He's right. It's a brawny, swaggering and bruising version of the famous tale. Bloody and brutal, it lands punch after punch. I found it tremendously entertaining and occasionally exhilarating, and if at times it swaggers a little too much -- thus threatening some of Shakespeare's more nuanced reflections on human behavior -- methinks the sin of excess is far from the worst qualities you can attach to "Macbeth."

Someone once said that men, like wine, only get better with age. This, I am sad to report, is not necessarily true. There's the George Clooney way of aging, and then there's what everyone else seems to be doing lately:

If you're Bruce Willis, you shave your head (good move) and hit on 20-year olds (bad move). You make movies with a great director like Robert Rodriguez (good move), but then say inappropriate words on live television (bad move, and bad language, too). Then you pose for awkward photos with your sexy ex-wife and her 29-year old boytoy (very, very bad move).

This isn't a weekend thing, but you might want to consider it for a Monday evening outing. Fresno State's music department is resurrecting its symphony orchestra. Music professor Larry Sutherland writes:

I'm writing you because of a column you wrote several months ago about what CSUF could do with the money spent on athletics. One of your suggestions was to have a "World Class" university orchestra. You should know that the music department faculty has given the formation of a symphony orchestra their highest priority. I was asked to conduct the orchestra this semester and, for the first time in 8 years, we will present a concert using a full symphony orchestra. The concert is on Monday, May 7th at 8PM in the Concert Hall on campus. It will feature our violin and piano professors Thi Nguyen and Andreas Wertz as soloists in the Mozart Concerto for Violin, Piano and Orchestra. The full symphony orchestra will perform the Symphony #1 of Beethoven, the Ibert Divertissement, and the first movement of the Dvorak 8th Symphony---music from the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries.

Sounds promising, and I hope I can make it. If any classical-music fans out there are able to attend, take a moment and let us know what you think.

phillogo.jpg1. Big sound. If you're one of those tactile folks that love to feel a wallop of sound when you're at a live performance, you won't want to miss the final Fresno Philharmonic concert of the season. Maestro Theodore Kuchar has assembled a whopping number of musicians -- nearly 100 -- to beef up Mahler's Symphony No. 6. Also on the program: Wagner's "Ride of the Valkyries," otherwise known as the "Platoon" music, and Bruckener's "Te Deum" featuring the Fresno Community Chorus. If you've never heard the 100-plus chorus join the Phil, you're in for a treat. Concerts are 8 p.m. Saturday and 2:30 p.m. Sunday.

2. Something wicked. Edward EmanuEl says that you might think you know "Macbeth" -- but you haven't seen his version. The director promises a show at Fresno State that will pop visually and thematically: "There won't be anything subtle about either the production or its design," he says. One great thing about shows at Fresno State is that directors can rely on a team of professional designers -- lighting, sound, sets, costumes -- for a really rich look. I think that will be the case with "Macbeth." The show opens 8 p.m. Friday and continues through May 12.

sierra%20rudolphIf you read the front page of Friday's Bee, you're already familiar with the truly trippy story of Sierra Randolph, a 12-year-old Robinson Elementary School student who faces possible expulsion for writing a line from the 2002 horror flick "The Ring" in a notebook that she gave to a classmate.

She wrote: "Have a great summer. You will die in seven days." The line refers to the film's premise: Anyone who watches a mysterious videotape will die a week later.

OK, so it probably wasn't the smartest thing for Sierra to write. But she's 12. Last time I checked, 12-year-olds aren't known for their wisdom and maturity. It was a joke.

Yet the school district is seriously considering expelling the straight-A student.

macbethIn today's issue of 7 I talk with "Macbeth" director Edward EmanuEl about his new production. Here's the continuation of the interview:

Do you consider this a traditional production in terms of setting, costumes, etc.?

Shakespeare produced his plays in modern dress. Productions that stage his plays in tights are re-creating Elizabethan and Jacobean museum pieces. Our play is set in the dark ages and the dress will reflect that age.

There are so many themes that people choose to highlight in "Macbeth": ambition, guilt, betrayal, illness, blood. How as a director do you shape a production with so many choices?

All of those themes are interwoven into the production. We highlight them all as well as revenge, the power of the dark side and the ultimate confrontation between Christianity and dark magic. There is no problem in shaping the production because Shakespeare has done a magnificent job of doing that all ready. All we do is follow his story, plot and character portrayals.

More than an entertaining rock show Tuesday night, "American Idol" showed why LaKisha Jones is really the most gifted of this season's performers. rentBefore I sat down to watch the national tour perform Monday night at the Saroyan, a fellow "Rent" enthusiast pointed out to me a lyric in the show that I hadn't really thought about before.

"Everything IS rent," the company sings. It's a moment that could be considered downright philosophical. Is the line talking about the show itself? Is the song musing on the impermanence of the characters' tumultuous mid-20s lives, and that someday they'll settle down to a mortgage and a subscription to a daily newspaper? (Hopefully.) Or is it a nod to the idea that life itself is impermanent, that it's silly to think that any mortal being could truly "own" anything, that we're all biding our time until we hand over the keys to the landlord for the final time?

Whatever your interpretation, one thing at least was clear from the enthusiastic audience at the Saroyan: "Rent" is a known quantity, and it is beloved.

647audra_mcdonald1web.jpgMy thoughts are with four-time Tony winner and beloved Fresno-raised Broadway star Audra McDonald and her family. Audra will miss two performances of her new show on Broadway, "110 in the Shade," to attend the Thursday memorial service of her father, Stanley McDonald Jr. He died in a plane crash Sunday near Sacramento. Playbill Online reports:

McDonald will miss the May 2-3 performances of Broadway's 110 in the Shade due to the sudden death of her father, a spokesman for Roundabout Theatre Company confirmed. She will perform in the musical May 1 at Studio 54 and resume performances May 4.

Audra is a pro through and through, but it still must be so incredibly difficult to go on stage Tuesday night and play such a demanding role while in a time of shock and grief. It's a crucial time for her show as well: "110 in the Shade" is in previews on Broadway. It's scheduled to open May 9.

The service is scheduled for 2 p.m. Thursday at Family Community Church, 2434 E. Nees Ave., Fresno. The McDonald family will no doubt be joined by many who knew Stanley McDonald in his years of service as an administrator for Fresno Unified and principal of Edison, Bullard and Hoover high schools.
