Listen up, celebrities:
If you have something going on, and you're one of the 3 or 4 famous people who doesn't want a ton of attention for your personal life, do it like the sports stars do it: during the dead week between Christmas and New Year's when everyone, particularly the Internet gossip sites and magazines, are on vacation. The evidence:
Mike Tyson's inevitable meltdown DUI/drug possession arrest Friday: The timing was perfect since most working people were off, and those who weren't spent the day actually working and not on the Internet in an effort to go home early. On a regular week, that story would have been huge news, but lucky for Mike, it barely made a ripple.
Later that same day, Michael Jordan and his wife, Juanita, announced through their lawyer that they are divorcing after 17 years of marriage. Again the timing was perfect, as only a few sites picked up the story.
And finally, the smartest move of them all: Tiger Woods announced Saturday that he and his wife are expecting their first baby this summer. Announcing this on a Saturday (on a holiday weekend, no less) assures the Woods family of at least a few days of privacy before the inevitable swarm of paparazzi start following Tiger's wife, Elin, to Hollywood baby store Petit Tresor.
Some might argue that sports stars don't generate as much media interest as movie stars, but as Mike Tyson, Michael Jordan and Tiger Woods represent the best in their respective sports, I'd say the interest is there. And apparently, so is the dumb luck media savvy. Well done, gents.
