On the occasion of Fresno County's 150th birthday -- which will be celebrated in grand fashion this weekend -- I put together this extended shout-out to the great things I've encountered in Fresno for my column today. Surely my 150 things are just the cusp of the great stuff Fresno and the county have to offer.

Since I know that anybody that reads that will undoubtedly have something they want to add, I figured we should make another list. Maybe we could get to 150 again. I'll start it off with a few things I left out of the column, but wanted in there.

Are we doing this again? Getting all worked up and scared about a hip-hop show?

The Big Fresno Fair is bringing a bill of Bay Area rappers for a Oct. 14 show billed as "Hyphy Nation." Scheduled to perform are Keak Da Sneak, San Quinn, Turf Talk, Dem Hoodstarz and Fresno's Shake Da Mayor. Hyphy is the Bay Area's answer to crunk. It's a sub-genre of hip-hop that's become a cultural phenomenon that influences how people in the Bay dance, dress, party and act.

Wednesday, KSEE, Channel 24, did this story (there's a video, too) about the Hyphy show at the fair. It seemed like a thinly veiled "watch out, Fresno -- be scared of the rappers." The story said:

In 1856, Fresno County was formed. Now, you can read about everything that happened since in The Bee's magazine on the Sesquicentennial. If you didn't receive a copy of the special section in your paper today, you can order a copy here.

You can also take a look at galleries of photos from the past 150 years and see the videos:
Interview with historian Cathy Rehart

Part Two of "Training wheels"
How do you say Sesquicentennial?

I'm embarking on what could end up being a tummy-twisting excursion next week. Our food writer Joan Obra and I are going on a search for the best tacos in the Valley. But to make sure our journey passes by the best spots in the Valley and uncovers all the hidden gems, we're going to need some help: We need your suggestions.

You might have saw my story in Sunday's spotlight section about Guns N' Roses coming to town this week. You might also have saw a note in Sunday's Setting It Straight saying that was not the case, that the concert was postponed until December. Then you might have been completely confused.

It's OK. Let me help.

I called our local Tower Records for its top 10 CDs, as I do every week, and this week's No. 1 made me cringe.
B000H4VV52.01._SS500_SCLZZZZZZZ_V60563307_.jpgFergie? Really? I was shocked. I thought people in Fresno were smarter than this.

What really could Fergie have to offer as an artist? Honestly, I'd like to know. I just don't see it. Not even in that shallow way people make excuses for liking doo-doo artists because they're attractive. That's not Fergie. But I guess with that Black Eyed Peas resume behind her, the record label figured they could shove this out there and maybe sell a million records.

In an effort to make sure no one else wastes $15 bucks, I'm providing this track-by-track breakdown of Fergie's debut solo CD, "The Dutchess," which hit stores this week.

You're welcome.

How does one be in three places in once? More specific, how am I gonna check out everything I wanna see tonight?

Mezcal promises to deliver a wonderful show tonight at Arte Americas. I can't recommend that one enough. The problem, however, is that it directly overlaps with the Fresno Doesn't Suck comedy night at Scoreboards in Clovis, which I've been dying to check out. Plus, there's the Move On Up three-year anniversary show at Starline, a celebration of the KFCF (FM, 88.1) Fresno-centric talk show hosted by Devoya Mayo.

At long last, people will have a chance to buy tickets to see the Dixie Chicks perform at the Save Mart Center. But do people in Fresno still care?

The oft-controversial country trio's Fresno date has been up in the air since June, when a ticket on-sale for what was supposed to be a Sept. 6 show was postponed the day before tickets were to go on sale. The concert has been re-scheduled for Nov. 16, with tickets to go on-sale at 10 a.m. Saturday. Prices are $49.60 and $66.75.

Tough way to lose Saturday - a loss that could crack the will of a team. Enough said. Now the focus has to be on winning WAC games and a conference title. Still, Colorado State and LSU are big games. Sound off on the rest of the season ...

For a while, it looked as if old Mother Nature did not want Thursday's Toby Keith concert, the first of the downtown outdoor concerts sponsored by Chukchansi Gold and the Fresno Grizzlies, to be a success.

Ominous clouds hung over the newly named Chukchansi Park, and as the sun began to set and the opening acts prepared to take the stage, it looked as if rain was in the forecast. That, combined with the wind shooting through the stadium that had parts of the huge stage swaying, made it seem like the gods were conspiring against this new beginning for big-name outdoor concerts in Fresno.

Luckily, by the time the man everyone came to see -- singer/actor/Ford pitchman Keith -- hit the stage at 9:15 p.m., the weather calmed down and the former Grizzlies Stadium turned into a fine place to see a concert. In fact, if you didn't look to the left and notice the Luftenburg's sign, you might have forgotten you were in Fresno.

Now in its 17th year, Fresno's gay and lesbian film festival -- the sixth-longest-running festival of its kind -- continues to grow in size, as well in energy. Check out this short film to see the excitement felt at the Tower Theatre on Wednesday.

For more information about Reel Pride, visit its Web site and read The Bee's story.

The honeymoon starts today for the new marriage between the Fresno Grizzlies and Chukchansi Gold Resort and Casino.

In July, the two sides announced a partnership to bring more concerts to the under-used (for music anyway) downtown stadium. The first of which is tonight as country star, truck spokesman and aspiring actor Toby Keith performs.

Wednesday things got even more tangled, as Chukchansi shelled out $16 million over 15 years for the naming rights to the stadium, which will now be called Chukchansi Park (I'm leading the unofficial charge to call the place The Chuk, btw).

Today marks the 10th anniversary of the death of Tupac Shakur. It's crazy to even think about. I remember so vividly when it happened. The time sure has passed.

I don't think 2Pac is the greatest rapper ever, though many do. But he's certainly the most compelling figure hip-hop has ever seen. He was a great poet and songwriter and he had such an engaging persona.

Rather than waxing nostalgic about Pac and his impact on hip-hop and society, I'm just gonna pass along some links that I've collected throughout the day.

Hey y'all, in case you haven't heard yet, celebrity-stalking Web site TMZ , other gossip hounds and even some reputable sources are reporting that on Tuesday Britney Spears gave birth to her second child, another boy, with rap-whiz husband and Fresno hometown hero Kevin Federline.

Welcome another half-Fresnan into the world. The only thing is we've yet to hear what Brit and K-Fed have named the little bundle of joy.

So here at the Beehive, we're starting a name-the-baby contest. Maybe one of K-Fed's ex-Fresno girlfriends can hit him on the cell and pass along our suggestions.

Here's mine: Cheetos Blackstone Federline. Got a nice ring to it, huh?

Fresno State performed well, but was not able to top the Ducks of Oregon.A lot of pregame talk, which was great ... Nice effort, falling 31-24, to No. 20 at the time, but not what Bulldogs fans wanted. Tells us what you think ...

Fresno State beats Nevada - nice way to start the season. What are your thoughts about the team, the performance, the game, the schedule - the BULLDOGS so far?

The first home football game for the Fresno State Bulldogs brought out excitement in fans who attended the tailgate party. Check out this video to see some scenes from the event.

(A word of warning, though: It got a little rowdy out there. You may want to turn down your computer's volume level before clicking the link provided above.)
